Dynamic Response And Static Analysis Of Rcc Space Frames Supporting High Speed Centrifugal Machines With Coupled Soil-Structure Interaction, Dilip K. Chakravorty, Dhiman K. Ghosh, H. N. Batavyal

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper reviews the current state of the art on the dynamic and static analyses of RCC space frames supporting high speed centrifugal machines e.g. large turbogenerators and compressors. The need to include the effects of soil-structure interaction formulations on overall behaviour of various analytical models are highlighted, At the same time, the uncertainties involved in evaluating essential geotechnical parameters and paucity of reliable and elaborate information from the machine manufacturers are discussed. The analysis and design aspects of this inter-disciplinary problem are illustrated with two typical design case studies selected from authors’ own experience in this specialised field. The …

Forge Hammer Foundation On Dilative Soil, S. J. Yang May 1984

Forge Hammer Foundation On Dilative Soil, S. J. Yang

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The property of dilative soil will further change when the dynamic force with different frequency acts on soil surface. So far, the physical process of this change remains unknown. However, it has been observed in the field test that dynamic force would increase the amount of the crevice of dilative soil and destroy the soil by combining with the external water.

Foundation-Bearing-Rotor Interaction Problem In Controlling Vibrations In A 120 Mw Turbo Generator, Krishen Kumar, Shamsher Prakash May 1984

Foundation-Bearing-Rotor Interaction Problem In Controlling Vibrations In A 120 Mw Turbo Generator, Krishen Kumar, Shamsher Prakash

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A two-pole turbogenerator posed problem of resonance and excessive vibrations at the operating speed during test runs in the Test-bed. The entire system comprising the foundation, pedestals supporting the generator, journal bearing seats, bearing oil-film, and the rotor has been modeled and analysed for computing the rotor's critical speeds as also the foundation's natural frequencies. Some of the system's parameters have been derived from actual tests. Sensitivity analysis for the rotor's critical speed that coincided with the operating speed of machine showed that this critical speed is relatively insensitive to the foundation mass as well as stiffness, and largely depends …

Studies on dynamic behaviour of turbo-generator foundations of various ratings have been carried out. Salient response parameters have been identified, Field vibration measurements taken on a 200 MW T.G. foundation have been reported. Measurements taken under intermittent coast-up and constant speed conditions have been analysed using FFT analyser and the frequency response thus obtained has been presented and discussed. From the signature analysis, high vibration peaks associated with the soil vibration modes have been observed. Analytical study carried out for 200 MW TG foundation also indicated the significance of soil structure interaction effect on the dynamic response. Based on the …

Vibration Studies Of Block Type Machine Foundations, S. K. Guha May 1984

Vibration Studies Of Block Type Machine Foundations, S. K. Guha

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Detailed vibration measurements were undertaken at eight block type machine foundations with different supporting soil conditions. These extensive measurements were supplemented by theoretical vibration calculations using principally Barkan's method but, at times, using methods of Reissner, Pauw, Richart and Ford and Haddow. The results of prototype experiments and theoretical studies on various compressor foundations described above as also on similar foundations in the country justify broadly the validity of various theories, particularly Barkan’s method, though these are based on somewhat different concepts. Design criteria for foundations are generally described in terms of limiting values of amplitudes of displacement at the …

Mechanised Rock Tunneling In Adverse Conditions, I. Mcfeat-Smith

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Several case histories are presented in order to highlight the way in which unexpected adverse geological conditions promote large delays in rock tunnelling. These are selected from tunnels which have been excavated by drill and blast, roadheader and fullface tunnel boring machines. In each case the important properties of rock affecting the progress rates obtained are identified together with the nature of the tunnelling problems encountered.

A Case Of Singular Geotechnical Failure For Industrial Structures In The Peruvian Andes, A. Carillo Gil, R. Torres Vega May 1984

A Case Of Singular Geotechnical Failure For Industrial Structures In The Peruvian Andes, A. Carillo Gil, R. Torres Vega

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

During the rainy season of 1982, foundation distress was occurred at several recently completed and still incomplete structures of an important mine project located in the Peruvian Andes. When the tailings thickener was tested an unexpected settlement started, some cracking was observed in the slab, and the central pier settled and tilted. The nature of the distress suggested the failure occurred as the result of the combined effect of a long term seepage under the bearing foundation soil and due to its different degree of compaction. This paper presents the characteristics of these problems as both foundation and fill materials, …

A Dockwall Failure In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, A. B. Wagner

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In 1975, a dockwall at the Port of Milwaukee, Wisconsin failed as salt was being deposited behind the wall. In 1981, exploration at the site was required for a new development. The exploration program included field testing to measure the shear strength of the organic soils through which the failure occurred. Dutch cone and vane shear devices were used. Continuous undisturbed samples were obtained in two (2) borings. This allowed an accurate determination of the stratigraphy in the slide area. The shear strength of the undisturbed samples was measured in the laboratory by means of the Torvane device. The shear …

Geotechnical Investigations For Foundation Design For Multi-Storeyed Building, S. C. Handa, Swami Saran, G. Ramasamy, A. S. R. Rao, B. Prakash

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Oil and Natural Gas Commission of India plans to construct a multi-storeyed building in Dehradun city at the foothills of Himalayas. The geotechnical investigations were carried out at site to determine soil parameters for foundation design. It was found that it was not possible to provide a raft foundation for the building and hence alternatively the pile foundation was suggested. The pile load capacity was predicted on the basis of soil parameters determined and a comparison was then made with the results obtained by carrying out load tests on constructed piles.

This paper describes a soil and rock exploration program that studied three (3) alternate sites for a 2,600 foot long aluminum production facility. Based on the results of the preliminary explorations, the third side was selected, although it had the poorest geotechnical properties and would be the most expensive to develop. This site contained karst features. Therefore, the major objective of the continuing exploration and design program was the overall clarification and quantification of the degree and distribution of solution activity across the site and its effect on construction planning and operations. A detailed analysis of the subsurface geohydrology was …

Study Of Vibration In Site Selection For A Precision Instrument Factory, Pan Fulan May 1984

Study Of Vibration In Site Selection For A Precision Instrument Factory, Pan Fulan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Antivibration is an important consideration in site selection for setting up a precision instrument factory. Any negligence to this could bring to the future production a great deal of trouble, as that the measurement will be inaccurate, the precision of products will not be up to the requirements, the instruments and meters will be damaged. In this paper, case histories in selection of site of the factory are described briefly. Then based on the site tests and wave theory, the formula for calculating the attenuation of amplitude, the principles for selecting the site of a factory and the necessary distances …

Behavior Of Two Big Rockfill Dams, And Design Aims, V. F. B. De Mello May 1984

Behavior Of Two Big Rockfill Dams, And Design Aims, V. F. B. De Mello

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The case histories of two major compacted embankment dams are analysed with regard to the problem most amenable to reasonings and computations of statistics of averages, the problem of deformations, discussed regarding specific laboratory testing compared with use of generalized correlations. Improved mental models for predictions are proposed. In the earthcore-compacted rockfill section the problem of crest cracking suggests the interest in a significant change of zoned section in the topmost stretch. For the concrete-face rockfill dam it is suggested that one needs a significant revision of instrumentation and monitoring orientation. Both dams behaved extraordinarily well on questions of consequence …

Densifying A Landfill For Commercial Development, S. B. Steinberg, R. G. Lukas

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper presents a case study of a dynamic compaction ("pounding") project, undertaken in Skokie, Illinois. The purpose was to densify a 50-ft deep former municipal waste landfill for support of a one-story warehouse structure on shallow foundations. The majority of the pounding was performed utilizing a 15-ton weight falling from a height of 60 ft. In some areas, lower energy levels were used for surface compaction. All phases of the project are discussed, beginning with the subsurface exploration program and geotechnical analysis, through the experimental test pounding section, and the final check borings to observe that the "production" pounding …

Design Of Road Cut Adjacent To Existing Structure, G. C. Whited, C. N. Laughter

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Interchange improvements within an urban environment required the deepening of a hillside cut. Design restraints required as deep a cut as possible without disturbing a water tower located at the crest of the slope or interfering with a shopping center at the toe. The water tower, constructed in 1933 with a steel tank encased in a concrete and brick structure, was founded on shallow spread footings. Foundation soils were silts and silty sands with seams of silty clay. The design investigation involved hydrogeologic studies, SPT borings, undisturbed sampling, laboratory testing, and stability analyses. Laboratory studies involved routine and unusual testing …

Geotechnical Aspects Of The Fort Mchenry Tunnel - Design And Construction, S. K. Sarkar, G. A. Munfakh May 1984

Geotechnical Aspects Of The Fort Mchenry Tunnel - Design And Construction, S. K. Sarkar, G. A. Munfakh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The geotechnical considerations affecting the design and construction of an immersed-tube tunnel are presented. Construction of the tunnel required deep excavations in overconsolidated fissured and slickensided clay deposits. Undrained, long-term residual and fully softened drained strength parameters were determined. The depth of excavation and the life of the cut slope were considered in selecting the design parameters for the slope study analysis. A tied-back soldier pile and lagging system was used for protection of the east end excavation in a congested urban area. Each tie-back was tested according to a simple acceptance criteria developed during construction. Lateral displacements measured behind …
