Design And Implementation Of Metamaterial Based Strain Sensor Using Aperture Coupled Antenna, Michael Brandon Buscher Dec 2011

Design And Implementation Of Metamaterial Based Strain Sensor Using Aperture Coupled Antenna, Michael Brandon Buscher

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Strain sensors are used to convert the physical measured quantity of strain into an electrical signal suitable for processing by electronic equipment. Traditional strain sensors are comprised of a thin flexible film with a resistive pattern traced on the surface. As the sensor is deformed, the electrical resistance changes proportionally, giving a direct measure of the strain incurred. Metamaterials, particularly split ring resonators (SRR), lend themselves as a valuable tool for sensing applications due to their highly resonant nature and their very narrow bandwidth (high Q-factor). Due to very high field localization effects, they are extremely sensitive to both the …

Understanding The Role Of A Bio-Inspired Surface Modification For Delayed Icing, Clayton Schenk Aug 2011

Understanding The Role Of A Bio-Inspired Surface Modification For Delayed Icing, Clayton Schenk

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric icing event is problematic for outdoor structures because it can damage, slow, impede, and danger general routine. For a wind turbine blade, it can damage, disrupt movement, and cause potentially dangerous ice throw. Anti-icing based on a surface texture is advantageous due to the low cost of maintenance and there is no additional requirement of energy output for preventing the icing problem. This work is based on the biomimicry of the superhydrophobic nature of the lotus leaf, whereas the limited wettability supports the water to flow freely from the surface structure. The phenomenon is based on a morphology and …

A Solid State Nitrogen Gas Generating Chip And Applications For Picosatellites, Kyle Godin Aug 2011

A Solid State Nitrogen Gas Generating Chip And Applications For Picosatellites, Kyle Godin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A microscale gas generating chip has many applications; in this study, applications relating to picosatellites have been considered. Cube satellites, a type of picosatellite, are of mass around one kilogram and side length 10cm x 10cm x 10cm. Their launches are becoming more numerous since their debut ten years ago. Their low cost and deployment system makes space accessible to agencies hitherto barred from it, such as universities and small governments. However, their power, mass, and volume budget is extremely tight. A microscale gas chip could compete with other designs for attitude control devices, most not flown yet as cube …

On The Complexity Of Grid Coloring, Daniel Christopher Apon Aug 2011

On The Complexity Of Grid Coloring, Daniel Christopher Apon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies problems at the intersection of Ramsey-theoretic mathematics, computational complexity, and communication complexity. The prototypical example of such a problem is Monochromatic-Rectangle-Free Grid Coloring. In an instance of Monochromatic-Rectangle-Free Grid Coloring, we are given a chessboard-like grid graph of dimensions n and m, where the vertices of the graph correspond to squares in the chessboard, and a number of allowed colors, c. The goal is to assign one of the allowed colors to each vertex of the grid graph so that no four vertices arranged in an axis-parallel rectangle are colored monochromatically. Our results include: 1. A conditional, …

Evaluating The Capacity Of A Proton Therapy Facility, Ridvan Gedik Aug 2011

Evaluating The Capacity Of A Proton Therapy Facility, Ridvan Gedik

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A relatively new consideration in proton therapy planning is the requirement that the mix of patients treated satisfy desired percentages. Since it is very dicult to satisfy an integer number of patients in light of these requirements, deviations from patient mix preferences and their impacts on operational capabilities are of particular interest to healthcare planners. Therefore, we propose a bicriteria mathematical programming model that determines an outpatient schedule maximizing the number of fractions and minimizing the deviations from the patient mix ratios over the planning horizon. The tradeos between the two objectives are identied through analysis of ecient frontiers. Our …

Data from the analysis of over one million production units of said System on Chip (SoC) is presented along with the results of …

Multi-Threshold Cmos Circuit Design Methodology From 2d To 3d, Ross Josiah Thian Dec 2010

Multi-Threshold Cmos Circuit Design Methodology From 2d To 3d, Ross Josiah Thian

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A new and exciting approach in digital IC design in order to accommodate the Moore's law is 3D chip stacking. Chip stacking offers more transistors per chip, reduced wire lengths, and increased memory access bandwidths. This thesis demonstrates that traditional 2D design flow can be adapted for 3D chip stacking. 3D chip stacking has a serious drawback: heat generation. Die-on-die architecture reduces exposed surface area for heat dissipation. In order to reduce heat generation, a low power technique named Multi-Threshold CMOS (MTCMOS) was incorporated in this work. MTCMOS required designing a power management unit (to control when and which gates …

Hardware Microkernels - A Novel Method For Constructing Operating Systems For Heterogeneous Multi-Core Platforms, Jason M. Agron Aug 2010

Hardware Microkernels - A Novel Method For Constructing Operating Systems For Heterogeneous Multi-Core Platforms, Jason M. Agron

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Today's standard operating systems (OSes) do not have the proper structure, nor support for executing on heterogeneous multi- and many-core platforms. These deficiencies manifest in symptomatic issues that range from relatively low-level application binary interface (ABI) compatibility problems, to higher-level concerns such as application programmer interface (API) compatibility, synchronization, and caching issues. These issues in turn reflect back up to the programmer through a lack of a standard set of OS services. Non-uniformities in the hardware architecture are also reflected back into the programming model. In total these issues combined break down the most fundamental benefit of modern operating systems; …

Morphology Of Ingaas Multilayer Nanostructure On Gaas High-Index Surfaces, Yanze Xie Aug 2009

Morphology Of Ingaas Multilayer Nanostructure On Gaas High-Index Surfaces, Yanze Xie

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work aimed to explore nanostructure configuration by growing multiple layers of strained InGaAs on GaAs high index surface. The knowledge learned would help to achieve a comprehensive picture of strain-driven nanostructure evolution. Ordered arrays of InGaAs quantum dots were demonstrated on GaAs(311)B. The ordering patterns depended on the thickness of GaAs interlayer between InGaAs Quantum Dots (QDs). With an increased interfacial thickness, a transition from two dimensional (2D) lateral ordering to 1D dot chains was observed. InGaAs growth on GaAs(311)A and GaAs(331)A ended up with 1D quantum wires (QWRs). Straight InGaAs QWRs were uniformly distributed across the surfaces owing …

Factors Affecting Redox Magnetohydrodynamics For Flow In Small Volumes, Matthew D. Gerner Aug 2009

Factors Affecting Redox Magnetohydrodynamics For Flow In Small Volumes, Matthew D. Gerner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Lab-on-a-chip technologies offer the possibility of developing analytical devices that are low-cost, portable, disposable, fast, and operable by non-technical personnel. Such devices require automated methods to manipulate ultra-small volumes (picoliters) of samples and solution, including pumping, stirring, and positioning. Current methods for ultra-small volume microfluidics have limitations that restrict their use including high voltage requirements, disadvantageous flow profiles or rates, and relatively complicated fabrication due to mechanical parts. Redox magnetohydrodyanmics (RMHD) that utilizes permanent magnets for portability shows promise as a micropump with ease of switching flow direction, no moving parts, compatibility with both aqueous and non-aqueous solutions, low voltages …
