This is the Phase 1 report for Preamble Assisted Equalization for Aeronautical Telemetry (PAQ).
Executive Summary:
To fully leverage the benefits of a periodically inserted preamble, the preamble is used to estimate the state of the channel. To this end the following algorithms have been developed, tested in simulation, and ported to the GPU-based real-time system:
1. The preamble detector, which scans the received samples searching for the presence of the preamble. The location of the preamble in the received samples is required to use the received samples to estimate the frequency offset, channel impulse response, and noise variance. The …

The present work reports the kinetic modeling of self-hydrolysis of non-buffered, non-stabilized NaBH4 solutions by model-based isoconversional method. The overall kinetics is described by a „reaction-order‟ model in a practical operating window of 10-20 wt% NaBH4 solutions at 25-80 C and 0-50% conversions. The apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factor are interrelated through a kinetic compensation effect (KCE). The apparent reaction order remains constant at a given temperature irrespective of extent of conversion and decreases with increase in temperature. It decreases from firstorder to 0.26 with increase in temperature from 25 to 80 C. The apparent activation energy is found …

We address the problem of fusing laser and RGB-Data from multiple robots operating in close proximity to one another. By having a team of robots working together, a large area can be scanned quickly, or a smaller area scanned in greater detail. However, a key aspect of this problem is the elimination of the spurious readings due to the robots operating in close proximity. While there is an extensive literature on the mapping and localization aspect of this problem, our problem differs from the dynamic map problem in that it involves at one kind of transient map feature, robots viewing …

Large-Scale Site And Frequency Diversity In Urban Peer-To-Peer Channels For Six Public Safety Frequency Bands, David W. Matolak, Kate A. Remley, Christopher L. Holloway, Qian Zhang, Qiong Wu
Faculty Publications
We report on peer-to-peer large-scale wireless channel characteristics for an urban environment in six public-safety bands, for five simultaneous receiving sites. Results are based upon measurements taken in Denver in July 2009 with stationary receivers and a pedestrian transmitter. The six frequencies at which we measured are (in MHz) 430, 750, 905, 1834, 2400, and 4860. We quantify both site and frequency diversity, and show that 5-site selection yields minimum average gains of 15 dB in mean received power levels; 5-site selection diversity also reduces received power variation by 17-29 dB, depending on frequency. Frequency diversity yields similar gains. By …
Relative Navigation Approach For Vision-Based Aerial Gps-Denied Navigation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman
Relative Navigation Approach For Vision-Based Aerial Gps-Denied Navigation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman

GPS-denied aerial flight is a challenging research problem and requires knowledge of complex elements from several distinct disciplines. Additionally, aerial vehicles can present challenging constraints such as stringent payload limits and fast vehicle dynamics. In this paper we propose a new architecture to simplify some of the challenges that constrain GPS-denied aerial flight. At the core, the approach combines visual graph-SLAM with a multiplicative extended Kalman filter. More importantly, for the front end we depart from the common practice of estimating global states and instead keep the position and yaw states of the MEKF relative to the current node in …

Thermospheric density impacts satellite position and lifetime through atmospheric drag. More accurate specification of thermospheric temperature, a key input to current models such as the High Accuracy Satellite Drag Model, can decrease model density errors. This paper improves the model of Burke et al. (2009) to model thermospheric temperatures using the magnetospheric convective electric field as a driver. In better alignment with Air Force satellite tracking operations, we model the arithmetic mean temperature, T 1/2, defined by the Jacchia (1977) model as the mean of the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum exospheric temperatures occurring in opposite hemispheres at a …

Functionalization Of Carbon Nanotube Yarn By Acid Treatment, Heath E. Misak, Ramazan Asmatulu, Mat O'Malley, Emil Jurak, Shankar Mall
Faculty Publications
Carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn was functionalized using sulfuric and nitric acid solutions in 3:1 volumetric ratio. Successful functionalization of CNT yarn with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups (e.g., COOH, COO–, OH, etc.) was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction revealed no significant change to the atomic in-plane alignment in the CNTs; however, the coherent length along the diameter was significantly reduced during functionalization. A morphology change of wavy extensions protruding from the surface was observed after the functionalization treatment. The force required to fracture the yarn remained the same after the functionalization process; however, the linear density was increased …

Globally, coal-fired power plants are the largest industrial source of carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 emissions from flue gas have potential for direct mineralization with electrostatic precipitator fly ash particles in the field. Demonstration scale accelerated mineral carbonation (AMC) studies were conducted at the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a large coal fired power plant located in Wyoming, USA. AMC produces kinetically rapid conditions for increased rates of mineralization of CO2, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and mercury (Hg) on fly ash particles. Control and AMC reacted fly ash particles were investigated for: change in carbon (expressed …

Crystallographic structural changes were investigated for Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6−δ, an electrode material for symmetric solid oxide fuel cells. The samples of this material were heated and cooled in wet hydrogen and wet oxygen atmospheres, to simulate the reducing and oxidizing conditions experienced under actual fuel cell operating conditions, and their structures and oxygen contents were determined using in situ powder neutron diffraction. The existence of a reversible tetragonal to cubic phase transition was established to occur between room temperature and 400 °C, both on heating and cooling in either oxygen or hydrogen. The …

A method for aerial rendezvous of small unmanned aircraft systems is proposed. The system includes placing a passively towed drogue into an orbit that is suitable for a small unmanned aircraft systems to follow, and a seeker guidance method for use with a monocular camera mounted on the centerline of the unmanned aircraft systems. The principle contributions of the work include a method for controlling the drogue path in moderate winds by manipulating the mothership orbit and airspeed, and a vision-based nonlinear pursuit tracking method that uses pitch rate and roll commands to guide the unmanned aircraft systems to an …

The effect of room temperature ultraviolet-ozone (UV-O3) exposure of MoS2 on the uniformity of subsequent atomic layer deposition of Al2O3 is investigated. It is found that a UV-O3 pre-treatment removes adsorbed carbon contamination from the MoS2 surface and also functionalizes the MoS2 surface through the formation of a weak sulfur-oxygen bond without any evidence of molybdenum-sulfur bond disruption. This is supported by first principles density functional theory calculations which show that oxygen bonded to a surface sulfur atom while the sulfur is simultaneously back-bonded to three molybdenum atoms is a thermodynamically favorable configuration. The adsorbed oxygen increases the reactivity of …
Automated Tracking And Estimation For Control Of Non-Rigid Cloth, Marc D. Killpack
Automated Tracking And Estimation For Control Of Non-Rigid Cloth, Marc D. Killpack
Faculty Publications
This report is a summary of research conducted on cloth tracking for automated textile manufacturing during a two semester long research course at Georgia Tech. This work was completed in 2009. Advances in current sensing technology such as the Microsoft Kinect would now allow me to relax certain assumptions and generally improve the tracking performance. This is because a major part of my approach described in this paper was to track features in a 2D image and use these to estimate the cloth deformation. Innovations such as the Kinect would improve estimation due to the automatic depth information obtained when …
A Reactor Model For Hydrogen Generation From Sodium Borohydride And Water Vapor, Lin Yu, Michael A. Matthews
A Reactor Model For Hydrogen Generation From Sodium Borohydride And Water Vapor, Lin Yu, Michael A. Matthews
Faculty Publications
This paper reports new data on the production of hydrogen from water vapor plus NaBH4, or NaBH4 þ 10% CoCl2. Data were collected with the aid of an isothermal semi-batch reactor with in-situ H2 rate measurement. The reaction of NaBH4 to generate H2 proceeds via three steps: deliquescence, dissolution and reaction. The deliquescence regime of NaBH4 in the presence of 10 weight percent CoCl2 is defined. The H2 yield is quantified at various reaction conditions (reaction temperature 70-120 C, relative humidity 31-69%). CoCl2 significantly accelerates the rate of H2 production compared to deliquescence + reaction of pure NaBH4. It is …

An overarching mathematical framework is proposed to describe entire mineral particle precipitation processes, including multiple polymorphic forms and ranges of temperatures. While existing models portray individual physical phenomena, the presented approach incorporates a diverse set of the physical phenomena simultaneously within a single mathematical description. The liquid and solid phase dynamics interact through coupling an aqueous ionic equilibrium-chemistry model with a set of population balance equations and a mixing model. Including the particle physical phenomena, nucleation, growth, dissolution, and aggregation together within a single framework allows for the exploration of nonintuitive and nontrivial coupling effects. To validate the proposed framework, …

While ultrasound has been used in many medical and industrial applications, only recently has research been done on phase transformations induced by ultrasound. This paper presents a numerical model and the predicted results of the phase transformation of a spherical nanosized droplet of perfluorocarbon in water. Such a model has applications in acoustic droplet vaporization, the generation of gas bubbles for medical imaging, therapeutic delivery and other biomedical applications. The formation of a gas phase and the subsequent bubble dynamics were studied as a function of acoustic parameters, such as frequency and amplitude, and of the physical aspects of the …

We quantify the fuel and cost benefits of applying extended formation flight to com- mercial airline operations. Central to this study is the development of a bi-level, mixed integer-real formation flight optimization framework. The framework has two main components: 1) a continuous domain aircraft mission performance optimization and 2) an integer optimization component that selects the best combination of optimized missions to form a formation flight schedule. The mission performance reflects the effects of rolled-up wakes, formation heterogeneity, and formation-induced compressibility. The results show that an airline can use formation flight to reduce fuel burn by 5.8% or direct operating …

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to investigate the triplet (S = 1) ground state of the neutral oxygen vacancy in bulk rutile TiO2 crystals. This shallow donor consists of an oxygen vacancy with two nearest-neighbor, exchange-coupled 3+ ions located along the [001] direction and equidistant from the vacancy. The spins of the two trapped electrons, one at each 3+ ion, align parallel to give the S = 1 state. These neutral oxygen vacancies are formed near 25 K in as-grown oxidized TiO2 crystals by illuminating with sub-band-gap 442 nm laser light. The angular dependence of the EPR …

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to characterize the 67Zn hyperfine interactions associated with neutral nitrogen acceptors in zinc oxide. Data are obtained from an n-type bulk crystal grown by the seeded chemical vapor transport method. Singly ionized nitrogen acceptors (N−) initially present in the crystal are converted to their paramagnetic neutral charge state (N0) during exposure at low temperature to 442 or 633 nm laser light. The EPR signals from these N0 acceptors are best observed near 5 K. Nitrogen substitutes for oxygen ions and has four nearest-neighbor cations. The zinc ion …

Interplay Between Chain Stiffness And Excluded Volume Of Semiflexible Polymers Confined In Nanochannels, Abhiram Muralidhar, Douglas R. Tree, Yanwei Wang, Kevin D. Dorfman
Faculty Publications
The properties of channel-confined semiflexible polymers are determined by a complicated interplay of chain stiffness and excluded volume effects. Using Pruned-Enriched Rosenbluth Method (PERM) simulations, we study the equilibrium properties of channel-confined polymers by systematically controlling chain stiffness and excluded volume. Our calculations of chain extension and confinement free energy for freely jointed chains with and without excluded volume show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. For ideal wormlike chains, the extension is seen to crossover from Odijk behavior in strong confinement to zero-stretching, bulk-like behavior in weak confinement. In contrast, for self-avoiding wormlike chains, we always observe that the linear …

A novel alkaline exchange ionomer (AEI) was prepared from the radiation-grafting of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) onto poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) [ETFE] powders with powder particle sizes of less than 100 μm diameter. Quaternisation of the VBC grafted ETFE powders with trimethylamine resulted in AEIs that were chemically the same as the ETFE-based radiation-grafted alkaline anion exchange membranes (AAEM) that had been previously developed for use in low temperature alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells (APEFC). The integration of the AEI powders into the catalyst layers (CL) of both electrodes resulted in a H2/O2 fuel cell peak power density of 240 mW cm−2 …

Video distribution over the Internet has become a popular service because of technological advances in internet (e.g., higher network bandwidth) and video coding (e.g., H.264/SVC). In this and other similar media distribution applications, a server or distribution center sends a media/video to a group peers with different bandwidth resources and display capacities. In one of the approaches, the peer-to-peer approach, the server sends only one copy of the media over Internet, and each peer receives one segment of the media and exchanges his/her segment with other peers to receive the complete media. A key design issue in this approach is …

Biomaterial scaffolds are central to many tissue engineering strategies as they create a space for tissue growth and provide a support for cell adhesion and migration. However, biomaterial implantation results in unavoidable injury resulting in an inflammatory response, which can impair integration with the host and tissue regeneration. Toward the goal of reducing inflammation, we investigated the hypothesis that a lentiviral gene therapy-based approach to localized and sustained IL-10 expression at a scaffold could modulate the number, relative proportions, and cytokine production of infiltrating leukocyte populations. Flow cytometry was used to quantify infiltration of six leukocyte populations for 21 days …

The article examines consequences and practical aspects of using an improved dynamic model for quadrotor state estimation with only IMU measurements. The improved model correctly explains the measurements available from the accelerometers on a quadrotor. We give a brief tutorial to explain the difference between accelerometer measurements on a ground vehicle and a quadrotor. We demonstrate several observers based on the improved model to illustrate the estimation improvements available. It is shown that the parameters for this model can be estimated as elements of the state, which makes the model simple to implement and utilize. Finally, we provide hardware results …

High-Efficiency Thermodynamic Power Cycles For Concentrated Solar Power Systems, Marc T. Dunham, Brian Iverson
Faculty Publications
This paper provides a review of high-efficiency thermodynamic cycles and their applicability to concentrating solar power systems, primarily focusing on high-efficiency single and combined cycles. Novel approaches to power generation proposed in the literature are also highlighted. The review is followed by analyses of promising candidates, including regenerated He-Brayton, regenerated CO2-Brayton, CO2 recompression Brayton, steam Rankine, and CO2-ORC combined cycle. Steam Rankine is shown to offer higher thermal efficiencies at temperatures up to about 600 ˚C but requires a change in materials for components above this temperature. Above this temperature, CO2 recompression Brayton cycles are shown to have very high …

Transported probability density function (TPDF) methods are well suited to modelling turbulent, reacting, variable density flows. One of the main challenges to the successful deployment of TPDF methods is accurately modelling the unclosed molecular mixing term. This study examines three of the most widely used mixing models: the Interaction by Exchange with the Mean (IEM), Modified Curl (MC) and Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree (EMST) models. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) data-sets were used to provide both initial conditions and inputs needed over the course of the runs, including the mean flow velocities, mixing frequency, and the turbulent diffusion coefficient. The same …

We here report that a newly discovered superior oxide-ion conductor Sr3−3xNa3xSi3O9−1.5x (x = 0.45) (SNS) demonstrates full potential to be a practical solid electrolyte for intermediate temperature-solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). It exhibits the highest oxide-ion conductivity with the lowest activation energy among all the chemically stable solid oxide-ion conductors reported. The ionic conductivity is stable over a broad range of partial pressures of oxygen (10−30 to 1 atm) for an extended period of time. A SOFC based on a 294 μm thick SNS-electrolyte produces peak power densities …

Using ab-initio methods, atomic structures and electronic properties of InP (001)/HfO2 (001) interface are studied within the framework of density functional theory. We examine the InP/HfO2 model interface electronic structures under varying oxidation conditions. The effects of indium and phosphorous concentrations on interfacial bonding, defect states, band offsets, and the thermodynamic stability at the interface are also investigated. The origin of interfacial gap states in InP (001)/HfO2 (001) interface are proposed, mainly from the P-rich oxides, which is validated by our experimental work. This highlights the importance of surface passivation prior to high-κ deposition based on the in situ spectroscopic …

Software is assuming an increasing role in the aerospace industry, and by the same token it is also playing an increasing role in many recent incidents and accidents of both military and commercial vehicles. To better understand this role, we examine two case studies from the accident database of the Air Force Accident Investigation Board (AIB). We previously illustrated the limitations of the notion of “software failure” and developed, in its stead, the notion of software contribution to adverse events. We show here how specific operational scenarios, generally unconsidered during the software development and testing, trigger those contributions. We provide …
