Flex-16: A Large-Displacement Monolithic Compliant Rotational Hinge, Robert Mcintyre Fowler, Alex Maselli, Peter Pluimers, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the design, analysis, and testing of a large-displacement monolithic compliant rotational hinge, called the Flex-16. The Flex-16 achieves 90 of rotation from monolithic construction and is aimed for application as a compliant satellite deployment hinge. Five prototypes were fabricated from three different materials (polypropylene, titanium, and a carbon nanotube framework) on two different size scales (macro and micro). A parametric finite element model was created to rapidly analyze a variety of design identified during a configuration study. Prototypes were tested for their ability to reach 90 of rotation without failure or self collision, and for their nonlinear …

Lignin utilization during biomass conversion has been a major challenge for lignocellulosic biofuel. In particular, the conversion of lignin along with carbohydrate for fungible fuels and chemicals will both improve the overall carbon efficiency and reduce the need for chemical pretreatments. However, few biomass-converting microorganisms have the capacity to degrade all cell wall components including lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. We hereby evaluated a unique oleaginous fungus strain, Cunninghamella echinulata FR3, for its capacity to degrade lignin during biomass conversion to lipid, and the potential to carry out consolidated fermentation without chemical pretreatment, especially when combined with sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) bmr …

Backfolding Of Wormlike Chains Confined In Nanochannels, Abhiram Muralidhar, Douglas R. Tree, Kevin D. Dorfman Nov 2014

Backfolding Of Wormlike Chains Confined In Nanochannels, Abhiram Muralidhar, Douglas R. Tree, Kevin D. Dorfman

Faculty Publications

Using pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM) simulations of a discrete wormlike chain model, we provide compelling evidence in support of Odijk’s prediction of two distinct Odijk regimes for a long wormlike chain confined in a nanochannel. In both cases, the chain of persistence length lp is renormalized into a series of deflection segments of characteristic length D2/3lp1/3, where D is the channel size. In the first (classic) Odijk regime, these deflection segments are linearly ordered. In the second Odijk regime, thin, long wormlike chains can backfold at a length scale quantified by the global persistence length. We …

Chalcopyrite CuInS2 (CIS) hierarchical structures composed of nanoflakes with a thickness of about 5 nm were synthesized by a facial solvothermal method. The thermodynamically metastable wurtzite phase CIS would be obtained by using InCl3 instead of In(NO3)3 as In precursor. The effects of the In precursor and the volume of concentrated HCl aqueous solution on the phases and morphologies of CIS nanocrystals have been systematically investigated. Experimental results indicated that the obtained phases of CIS nanocrystals were predominantly determined by precursor-induced intermediate products. The photocatalytic properties of chalcopyrite and wurtzite CIS in visible-light-driven degradation of …

Nonlinear Modeling, Estimation And Predictive Control In Apmonitor, John Hedengren, Reza Asgharzadeh Shishavan, Kody M. Powell, Thomas F. Edgar

Faculty Publications

This paper describes nonlinear methods in model building, dynamic data reconciliation, and dynamic optimization that are inspired by researchers and motivated by industrial applications. A new formulation of the ℓ1-norm objective with a dead-band for estimation and control is presented. The dead-band in the objective is desirable for noise rejection, minimizing unnecessary parameter adjustments and movement of manipulated variables. As a motivating example, a small and well-known nonlinear multivariable level control problem is detailed that has a number of common characteristics to larger controllers seen in practice. The methods are also demonstrated on larger problems to reveal algorithmic …

Investigating The Release Mechanism Of Calcein From Eliposomes At Higher Temperatures, Ghaleb A. Husseini, William G. Pitt, Jacob B. Williams, Marjan Javadi

Faculty Publications

Numerous nanocarriers are currently being investigated as drug delivery vehicles for transporting chemotherapeutics to cancer cells. Our research group has recently synthesized a new generation of echogenic liposomes based on the concept of encapsulating one or more nanoemulsion droplets inside a liposome (called an “eLiposome”). The concept is to use a nanoemulsion droplet with a low boiling point near body temperature, thus requiring only a small acoustic nudge to vaporize the droplet from liquid to gas and break open the eLiposome, thus releasing its contents. The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we wanted to show experimentally that eLiposomes …

Biphilic Nanoporous Surfaces Enabled Exceptional Drag Reduction And Capillary Evaporation Enhancement, Xianming Dai, Fanghao Yang, Ronggui Yang, Xinyu Huang, William A. Rigdon, Xiaodong Li, Chen Li

Faculty Publications

Simultaneously achieving drag reduction and capillary evaporation enhancement is highly desired but challenging because of the trade-off between two distinct hydrophobic and hydrophilic wettabilities. Here, we report a strategy to synthesize nanoscale biphilic surfaces to endow exceptional drag reduction through creating a unique slip boundary condition and fast capillary wetting by inducing nanoscopic hydrophilic areas. The biphilic nanoporous surfaces are synthesized by decorating hydrophilic functional groups on hydrophobic pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that the carbon nanotube-enabled biphilic nanoporous surfaces lead to a 63.1% reduction of the friction coefficient, a 61.7% wetting speed improvement, and up to 158.6% enhancement …

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) has proven an invaluable tool for the enrichment of populations of stem and progenitor cells owing to its ability to sort cells in a label-free manner and its biological safety. However, DEP separation devices have suffered from a low throughput preventing researchers from undertaking studies requiring large numbers of cells, such as needed for cell transplantation. We developed a microfluidic device designed for the enrichment of stem and progenitor cell populations that sorts cells at a rate of 150,000 cells/h, corresponding to an improvement in the throughput achieved with our previous device designs by over an order of …

Space Separatism: Degree Of Differentiation, Luke R. Stover, Alan A. Johnson Nov 2014

Space Separatism: Degree Of Differentiation, Luke R. Stover, Alan A. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Space is so important that the DOD recognizes it as one of five domains in which US forces operate (the other four are land, sea, air, and information). In 2001 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld designated the Department of the Air Force (DAF) the “Executive Agent for Space for the DOD.” Given the national importance of space activities, the formation of a separate space force has been a topic of persistent discussion in academic and doctrinal circles ever since the United States first entered the space age. Proponents of a separate force argue that because space is an inherently unique …

Host-Guest Interaction Dictated Selective Adsorption And Fluorescence Quenching Of A Luminescent Lightweight Metal-Organic Framework Toward Liquid Explosives, Dan Liu, Xiaojuan Liu, Yongxin Liu, Yang Yu, Fanglin Chen, Cheng Wang

Faculty Publications

In this article, we report the successful preparation of a Mg-based luminescent MIL-53 metal–organic framework (MOF), namely [Mg2(BDC)2(BPNO)]·2DMF (1) (BDC = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate, BPNO = 4,4’- dipyridyl-N,N’-dioxide, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) in a mixed solvent containing a 2 : 3 volume ratio of DMF and ethanol (EtOH) under solvothermal conditions. Desolvated compound 1a can be used as an absorbent for selective adsorption and separation of liquid explosives, including nitroaromatic (nitrobenzene (NB)) and nitroaliphatic (nitromethane (NM) and nitroethane (NE)) compounds, through single crystal-to-single crystal (SC–SC) transformations. As one of the weakly luminescent MOFs, the luminescence of compound 1a could be quenched by …

Particle Dispersion In Homogeneous Turbulence Using The One-Dimensional Turbulence Model, Guangyuan Sun, David O. Lignell, John C. Hewson, Craig R. Gin Oct 2014

Particle Dispersion In Homogeneous Turbulence Using The One-Dimensional Turbulence Model, Guangyuan Sun, David O. Lignell, John C. Hewson, Craig R. Gin

Faculty Publications

Lagrangian particle dispersion is studied using the one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model in homogeneous decaying turbulence configurations. The ODT model has been widely and successfully applied to a number of reacting and nonreacting flow configurations, but only limited application has been made to multiphase flows. Here, we present a version of the particle implementation and interaction with the stochastic and instantaneous ODT eddy events. The model is characterized by comparison to experimental data of particle dispersion for a range of intrinsic particle time scales and body forces. Particle dispersion, velocity, and integral time scale results are presented. The particle implementation introduces …

Development Of Ultrasound Sensitive Eliposomes Containing Doxorubicin For Drug Delivery, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt, Kuo-Chen Wei Oct 2014

Development Of Ultrasound Sensitive Eliposomes Containing Doxorubicin For Drug Delivery, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt, Kuo-Chen Wei

Faculty Publications

Aims: A novel nanocarrier was formulated by remote loading of doxorubicin (Dox) into a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposome that also contains various perfluorocarbon (PFC) droplets within its aqueous interior. It was shown that Dox can be loaded to a level of up to 67% into these large unilamellar vesicles composed of DPPC and cholesterol by employing a transmembrane pH gradient technique.

Methods: The different encapsulation efficiencies for these eLipoDox constructs of differing PFC composition are 45.5% (PFC5), 31.5% (PFC6) and 66.7% (PFC5/PFC6 mixture, PFCm). At 30 seconds of insonation, the eLipoDox formulation with PFCm droplets appeared to release more Dox than …

Machine Learning Nuclear Detonation Features, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson Oct 2014

Machine Learning Nuclear Detonation Features, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Nuclear explosion yield estimation equations based on a 3D model of the explosion volume will have a lower uncertainty than radius based estimation. To accurately collect data for a volume model of atmospheric explosions requires building a 3D representation from 2D images. The majority of 3D reconstruction algorithms use the SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform) feature detection algorithm which works best on feature-rich objects with continuous angular collections. These assumptions are different from the archive of nuclear explosions that have only 3 points of view. This paper reduces 300 dimensions derived from an image based on Fourier analysis and five edge …

Timing Mark Detection On Nuclear Detonation Video, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson Oct 2014

Timing Mark Detection On Nuclear Detonation Video, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

During the 1950s and 1960s the United States conducted and filmed over 200 atmospheric nuclear tests establishing the foundations of atmospheric nuclear detonation behavior. Each explosion was documented with about 20 videos from three or four points of view. Synthesizing the videos into a 3D video will improve yield estimates and reduce error factors. The videos were captured at a nominal 2500 frames per second, but range from 2300-3100 frames per second during operation. In order to combine them into one 3D video, individual video frames need to be correlated in time with each other. When the videos were captured …

eLiposomes encapsulate a perfluorocarbon nanoemulsion droplet inside a liposome. Ultrasound is then used as a trigger mechanism to vaporize the perfluorocarbon, break the liposome, and release the desired drug to the tumor tissue. The purpose of this research is to show that eLiposomes synthesized using perfluoropentane are stable above the normal boiling point of the perfluoropentane and at body temperature and thus has potential for use in vivo. Experiments involving the release of fluorescent calcein molecules were performed on eLiposomes to measure the release of calcein at various temperatures in the absence of ultrasound. Results showed that eLiposomes are stable …

Verifying And Validating Multirobot Missions, Damian M. Lyons, Ronald C. Arkin, Shu Jiang, Dagon Harrington, Tsung-Ming Liu

Faculty Publications

We have developed an approach that can be used by mission designers to determine whether or not a performance guarantee for their mission software, when carried out under the uncertain conditions of a real-world environment, will hold within a threshold probability. In this paper we demonstrate its utility for verifying multirobot missions, in particular a bounding overwatch mission.

Probabilistic Fatigue Design Of Shaft For Bending And Torsion, Edward Osakue Sep 2014

Probabilistic Fatigue Design Of Shaft For Bending And Torsion, Edward Osakue

Faculty Publications

The ever increasing demand for better and reliable mechanical systems necessitates the explicit consideration of reliability in the modeling and design of these systems. Design for reliability (DFR) has been receiving a great deal of attention for several years and companies are deploying resources to the design for reliability process because of the need to satisfy customers and reduce warranty costs. In traditional or deterministic design, safety or design factors are usually subjectively assigned in product design so as to assure reliability. But this method of design does not provide a logical basis for addressing uncertainties, so the level of …

A Simple Solution Method For The Blade Element Momentum Equations With Guaranteed Convergence, Andrew Ning Sep 2014

A Simple Solution Method For The Blade Element Momentum Equations With Guaranteed Convergence, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

The blade element momentum equations, though conceptually simple, can be challenging to solve reliably and efficiently with high precision. These requirements are particularly important for efficient rotor blade optimization that utilizes gradient-based algorithms. Many solution approaches exist for numerically converging the axial and tangential induction factors. These methods all generally suffer from a lack of robustness in some regions of the rotor blade design space, or require significantly increased complexity to promote convergence. The approach described here allows for the blade element momentum equations to be parameterized by one variable: the local inflow angle. This reduction is mathematically equivalent, but …

Extended Formation Flight At Transonic Speeds, Andrew Ning, Ilan Kroo, Michael Aftosmis, Marian Nemec, James Kless

Faculty Publications

Aircraft flown in formation can realize significant reductions in induced drag by flying in regions of wake upwash. However, most transports fly at transonic speeds where the impact of compressibility on formation flight is not well understood. This study utilizes an Euler solver to analyze the inviscid aerodynamic forces and moments of transonic wing/body configurations flying in a two-aircraft formation. Formations with large streamwise separation distances (10-50 wingspans) are considered.

This work indicates that compressibility-related drag penalties in formation flight may be eliminated by slowing 2-3% below the nominal out-of-formation cruise Mach number (either at fixed lift coefficient or fixed …

The creation of A-site cation defects within a perovskite oxide can substantially alter the structure and properties of its stoichiometric analogue. In this work, we demonstrate that by vacating 2 and 5% of A-site cations from SrNb0.1Co0.9O3−δ (SNC1.00) perovskites (Sr1−sNb0.1Co0.9O3−δ, s = 0.02 and 0.05; denoted as SNC0.98 and SNC0.95, respectively), a Jahn–Teller (JT) distortion with varying extents takes place, leading to the formation of a modified crystal lattice within a the perovskite framework. Electrical conductivity, electrochemical performance, chemical compatibility and microstructure of Sr …

Implementing Dubins Airplane Paths On Fixed-Wing Uavs, Timothy Mclain, Randall W. Beard, Mark Owen Aug 2014

Implementing Dubins Airplane Paths On Fixed-Wing Uavs, Timothy Mclain, Randall W. Beard, Mark Owen

Faculty Publications

A well-known path-planning technique for mobile robots or planar aerial vehicles is to use Dubins paths, which are minimum-distance paths between two configurations subject to the constraints of the Dubins car model. An extension of this method to a three-dimensional Dubins airplane model has recently been proposed. This chapter builds on that work showing a complete architecture for implementing Dubins airplane paths on small fixed-wing UAVs. The existing Dubins airplane model is modified to be more consistent with the kinematics of a fixed-wing aircraft. The chapter then shows how a recently proposed vector-field method can be used to design a …

Communication: Using Multiple Tethers To Stabilize Proteins On Surfaces, Brandon K. Loong, Thomas A. Knotts Iv

Faculty Publications

Protein surface interactions are important in many applications in biotechnology including protein arrays, but these technologies have not lived up to their transformative potential because it is difficult to attach proteins to surfaces in a manner that preserves function and theoretical understanding of the relevant phenomena remains limited. Here is reported the effect of using multiple tethers to attach a protein (lysozyme) to a surface and the effects on the structure and stability of the molecule. The simulations show how using two tethers can drastically change the folding mechanism such that a protein that is initially unstable and inactive when …

The Effect Of Platelet-Rich Plasma (Prp) On Muscle Contusion Healing In A Rat Model., Demetris Delos, Matthew J. Leineweber, Salma Chaudhury, Saif Alzoobaee, Yingxin Gao, Scott Alan Rodeo

Faculty Publications

Background: Current therapy for muscle contusions is usually limited to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and/or use of the RICE principle (rest, ice, compression, elevation); thus, other forms of treatment that can potentially accelerate the rate of healing are desirable. Hypotheses: A local injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) would lead to accelerated healing rates compared with controls; also, delayed administration of PRP would lead to a blunted response compared with immediate treatment. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Forty-six male Lewis rats each underwent a single blunt, nonpenetrating impact to the gastrocnemius muscle via a drop-mass technique and subsequently received either a …

Catalytic Performance Of An Iron-Based Catalyst In Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis, Majid Sarkari, Farhad Fazlollahi, Hossein Ajamein, Hossein Atashi, William C. Hecker, Larry L. Baxter

Faculty Publications

This paper documents the performance and kinetics of an iron/manganese oxide catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor by Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) under conditions favoring the formation of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons (P: 1–12 bar; T: 513–543 K; H2/CO:1, 1.5, 2 mol/mol; gas hourly space velocity: 4200–7000 cm3 (STP)/h/gcat). Based on the hypothesis that water inhibits the intrinsic FTS reaction rate, eight kinetic models are considered: six variations of the Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson representation and two empirical power-law models. The kinetic expression/mechanism that most precisely fits the data assumes the following: (1) CO dissociation is reversible and does not involve hydrogen; (2) all hydrogenation …

Leveraging Area Bounds Information For Autonomous Multi-Robot Exploration, Tsung-Ming Liu, Damian M. Lyons

Faculty Publications

In this paper we propose an approach, the Space-Based Potential Field (SBPF) approach, to controlling multiple robots for area exploration missions that focus on robot dispersion. The SBPF method is based on a potential field approach that leverages knowledge of the overall bounds of the area to be explored. This additional information allows a simpler potential field control strategy for all robots but which nonetheless has good dispersion and overlap performance in all the multi-robot scenarios while avoiding potential minima. Both simulation and robot experimental results are presented as evidence.

Path Loss Modeling For V2v Communication On A Slope, Pengyu Liu, David W. Matolak, Bo Ai, Ruoyu Sun

Faculty Publications

Path loss modeling for both regular and irregular terrains is still gaining significant attention from researchers. A sloped terrain is one specific kind of an irregular terrain that-as far as we are aware-has not been completely studied. Although some results have been published for slope path loss modeling in cellular communication, an adequate model for the case when the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx) both have low-height antennas and are located on or near a slope does not exist. In this paper, for complete analysis of such conditions, we consider four scenarios: 1) two vehicles are located at opposite …
