This thesis is divided into three parts: I. The Surface Impregnation of Wood; II. Use Characteristics of Impregnated wood; and III. Investigations of Resin Adhesives. The material presented in Part I is a continuation of previous experimentation that had established general methods for producing a hardened surface wood product. The methods involved parting of the wood fibers on the surface by a special serrating tool, followed by a surface impregnation and final curing. I. IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR WASHING IRON BLUE SUSPENSIONS

The investigation of several procedures for the speeding of the washing of iron blue suspensions to remove electrolytes is reported. The use of several techniques to coagulate blue particles in the colloidal range to cause more rapid settling was found to be of little value. A conventional Oliver filter and centrifugal clarifier were found to be unsatisfactory for clearing iron blue suspensions. Considerable advantage in washing by settling and decantation was obtained with the settling of the blue suspensions in relatively shallow vessels. The theory for the graphical solution of batch steam distillation of a binary mixture is presented and illustrated. The results obtained from this graphical procedure are compared with actual experimental results. The comparison showed very close agreement between the graphical results and the experimental results. Three sets of experimental data are shown for benzene-bromobenzene mixtures and one complete set for benzene-toluene mixtures.

This thesis presents results on methods used to produce a hard surfaced wood product. The methods involve the parting of the wood fibers on the surface by a special serrating tool, followed by surface impregnation and final curing. The serrations on the wood surface produce an artificial grain upon curing. A preliminary investigation was made to improve the rot-resistance of wood by gaseous treatment. Results of such treatments show some limited success with formaldehyde on yellow poplar and warrant further study. An investigation was made to find a substitute for teak wood used on submarine decking. A number of combinations …

A unit was constructed for the study of film heat transfer coefficients of a heavy fuel oil in viscous or streamline flow. The heat exchanger was of the shell and tube type, having extended longitudinal steel fins welded to the tube. Auxiliary equipment consisted of an oil pump, oil storage reservoirs, piping, and means for measurement of temperatures and oil flow rates. The unit was operated both as a fin type heat exchanger with the oil in contact with the finned surfaces, and as a straight tube and shell exchanger with the oil on the tube side. Oil flow rates …

Ethylcellulose was refluxed with Stearic, Oleic, Linseed Fatty acids, and a neutral Mineral Oil in the presence of a solvent. The products recovered were analyzed to determine if any possible reaction had taken place. Conditions for the reaction were carried out so that the temperatures obtained could be in the near range of varnish cooking, that is between 375 and 500°C. The I solvents used were diethylbenzene, boiling point 180oC and tetralin, boiling point 208oC. In each case approximate stoichiometric proportions of the fatty acids and ethylcellulose were used. These were refluxed to a sensible minimum viscosity of solution. The …

A study of the drying of Buna-S in crumb form (designated as GR-S) is presented in which investigations of vacuum and air drying are made. The drying characteristics are presented and the effect of drying on the quality is evaluated. Vacuum drying is investigated using a shelf and a rotary type unit. The individual effects of temperature, vacuum, thickness of crumb layer, and size of crumb particles are studied. Data are correlated by means of drying rate curves. Comparisons of the effects of the variables are made using these curves. Air drying is studied by the use of a shelf …

There have been developed various colored ethyl cellulose lacquers that compare favorably with standard nitrocellulose lacquers in physical tests. Ultra violet light caused rather pronounced darkening of the lighter colors such as white and light yellow, probably because of the use of high amounts of phenolic resin. Also because of the presence of relatively large amounts of phenolic resin, the cost was somewhat higher than a comparable nitrocellulose lacquer. Suggestions for further work and improvement are included. An ethyl cellulose lacquer has also been developed to be applied by spray or brush to ethyl cellulose plastics with a minimum amount …

This thesis is a report on three investigations, Citrus waste Disposal, Distillery Slop Disposal, and Dehydration of Beet by Infra-red Radiation. The work on citrus waste consisted or the production of a resin tram citrus waste and phthall1c anhydride. The optimum molding conditions tor this cellulosic resin were established, and the effect of var1ation in the percentage of citrus waste to phthalic anhydride was determined.
