Enhancing Cnt-Composites With Raman Spectroscopy, Gregory J. Freihofer
Enhancing Cnt-Composites With Raman Spectroscopy, Gregory J. Freihofer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have been the subject of intense research for their potential to improve a variety of material properties when developed as nano-composites. This research aims to address the challenges that limit the ability to transfer the outstanding nano-scale properties of CNTs to bulk nano-composites through Raman characterization. These studies relate the vibrational modes to microstructural characterization of CNT composites including stress, interface behavior, and defects. The formulation of a new fitting procedure using the pseudo-Voigt function is presented and shown to minimize the uncertainty of characteristics within the Raman G and D doublet. Methods for optimization of manufacturing …

Sensing and analysis of a structure for the purpose of detecting, tracking, and evaluating damage and deterioration, during both regular operation and extreme events, is referred to as Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). SHM is a multi-disciplinary field, with a complete system incorporating sensing technology, hardware, signal processing, networking, data analysis, and management for interpretation and decision making. However, many of these processes and subsequent integration into a practical SHM framework are in need of development. In this study, various components of an SHM system will be investigated. A particular focus is paid to the investigation of a previously developed damage …
Virtualization And Self-Organization For Utility Computing, Mehdi Saleh
Virtualization And Self-Organization For Utility Computing, Mehdi Saleh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We present an alternative paradigm for utility computing when the delivery of service is subject to binding contracts; the solution we propose is based on resource virtualization and a selfmanagement scheme. A virtual cloud aggregates set virtual machines to work in concert for the tasks specified by the service agreement. A first step for the establishment of a virtual cloud is to create a scale-free overlay network through a biased random walk; scale-free networks enjoy a set of remarkable properties such as: robustness against random failures, favorable scaling, and resilience to congestion, small diameter, and average path length. Constrains such …
The Performance And Power Impact Of Using Multiple Dram Address Mapping Schemes In Multicore Processors, Rami Jadaa
The Performance And Power Impact Of Using Multiple Dram Address Mapping Schemes In Multicore Processors, Rami Jadaa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lowest-level cache misses are satisfied by the main memory through a specific address mapping scheme that is hard-coded in the memory controller. A dynamic address mapping scheme technique is investigated to provide higher performance and lower power consumption, and a method to throttle memory to meet a specific power budget. Several experiments are conducted on single and multithreaded synthetic memory traces -to study extreme cases- and validate the usability of the proposed dynamic mapping scheme over the fixed one. Results show that applications’ performance varies according to the mapping scheme used, and a dynamic mapping scheme achieves up to 2x …

The Acquisition Of Lexical Knowledge From The Web For Aspects Of Semantic Interpretation, Hansen A. Schwartz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the effective acquisition of lexical knowledge from the Web to perform semantic interpretation. The Web provides an unprecedented amount of natural language from which to gain knowledge useful for semantic interpretation. The knowledge acquired is described as common sense knowledge, information one uses in his or her daily life to understand language and perception. Novel approaches are presented for both the acquisition of this knowledge and use of the knowledge in semantic interpretation algorithms. The goal is to increase accuracy over other automatic semantic interpretation systems, and in turn enable stronger real world applications such as machine …

Lyapunov-Based Control Design For Uncertain Mimo Systems, Zhao Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation. we document the progress in the control design for a class of MIMO nonlinear uncertain system from five papers. In the first part, we address the problem of adaptive control design for a class of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems. A Lypaunov based singularity free control law, which compensates for parametric uncertainty in both the drift vector and the input gain matrix, is proposed under the mild assumption that the signs of the leading minors of the control input gain matrix are known. Lyapunov analysis shows global uniform ultimate boundedness (GUUB) result for the tracking error under …

Integration Of High-Q Filters With Highly Efficient Antennas, Yazid Yusuf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The integration of high-quality (Q)-factor 3-D filters with highly efficient antennas is addressed in this dissertation. Integration of filters and antennas into inseparable units eliminates the transitions between the otherwise separate structures resulting in more compact and efficient systems. The compact, highly efficient integrated 3-D filter/antenna systems, enabled by the techniques developed herein, allow for the realization of integrated RF front ends with significantly- reduced form factors. Integration of cavity filters with slot antennas in a single planar substrate is first demonstrated. Due to the high Q factor of cavity resonators, the efficiency of the integrated filter/antenna system is found …

Study Of High Efficiency Micro Thermoelectric Energy Harvesters, Steven Michael Pedrosa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thermal energy sources, including waste heat and thermal radiation from the sun, are important renewable energy resources. Thermal energy can be converted into electricity by thermoelectric phenomena; the thermoelectric phenomena can also be operated in reverse when provided an electric current, producing a temperature gradient across the device. Thermoelectric devices are scalable, renewable, and cost effective products that offer capabilities to harness waste heat or environmental heat sources, and convert the captured heat into usable electricity. The operating principle of a thermoelectric device requires that a temperature gradient be present across the device, which induces the flow of electrons from …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we address the problem of discovery and representation of group activity of humans and objects in a variety of scenarios, commonly encountered in vision applications. The overarching goal is to devise a discriminative representation of human motion in social settings, which captures a wide variety of human activities observable in video sequences. Such motion emerges from the collective behavior of individuals and their interactions and is a significant source of information typically employed for applications such as event detection, behavior recognition, and activity recognition. We present new representations of human group motion for static cameras, and propose …
Spectrum Sharing And Service Pricing In Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Swastik Kumar Brahma
Spectrum Sharing And Service Pricing In Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Swastik Kumar Brahma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, radio spectrum has been statically allocated to wireless service providers (WSPs). Regulators, like FCC, give wireless service providers exclusive long term licenses for using specific range of frequencies in particular geographic areas. Moreover, restrictions are imposed on the technologies to be used and the services to be provided. The lack of flexibility in static spectrum allocation constrains the ability to make use of new technologies and the ability to redeploy the spectrum to higher valued uses, thereby resulting in inefficient spectrum utilization [23, 38, 42, 62, 67]. These limitations have motivated a paradigm shift from static spectrum allocation towards …
Finite Depth Seepage Below Flat Apron With End Cutoffs And A Downstream Step, Arun K. Jain
Finite Depth Seepage Below Flat Apron With End Cutoffs And A Downstream Step, Arun K. Jain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydraulic structures with water level differences between upstream and downstream are subjected to seepage in foundation soils. Two sources of weakness are to be guarded against: (1) percolation or seepage may cause under-mining, resulting in the collapse of the whole structure, and (2) the floor of the apron may be forced upwards, owing to the upward pressure of water seeping through pervious soil under the structure. Many earlier failures of hydraulic structures have been reported due to these two reasons. The curves and charts prepared by Khosla, Bose, and Taylor still form the basis for the determination of uplift pressure …

However, such adoption did not take place until the beginning of the new millennium. And with such adoption, it has been accompanied with major challenges related to proper lean implementation, sustainability of achieved …
Landfill Gas To Energy Incentives And Benefits, Hamid R. Amini
Landfill Gas To Energy Incentives And Benefits, Hamid R. Amini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Municipal solid waste (MSW) management strategies typically include a combination of three approaches, recycling, combustion, and landfill disposal. In the US approximately 54% of the generated MSW was landfilled in 2008, mainly because of its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. However, landfills remain a major concern due to potential landfill gas (LFG) emissions, generated from the chemical and biological processes occurring in the disposed waste. The main components of LFG are methane (50-60%) and carbon dioxide (40-50%). Although LFG poses a threat to the environment, if managed properly it is a valuable energy resource due to the methane content. Currently there are …
Stress Shielding Minimized In Femoral Hip Implants A Finite Element Model Optimized By Virtual Compatibility, Christian E. Feldt
Stress Shielding Minimized In Femoral Hip Implants A Finite Element Model Optimized By Virtual Compatibility, Christian E. Feldt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bone mechanics and traditional implant materials produce a recurring problem for patients of total hip arthroplasty (THA): the bone is “shielded” from the loading it has become accustomed to over many years of development. Bone adheres to what is called “Wolff’s Law”, meaning it is an adaptive structure which adjusts its geometry based on the loads experienced over its life (Pearson; Goldstein). As the new femoral hip implant transmits reduced stresses to the remaining bone, bone tissue atrophies at the interface, permitting loosening of the implant, pain, and thereby obliging additional surgery to correct the issue (Meade). In the present …
A Multiscale Model Of The Neonatal Circulatory System Following Hybrid Norwood Palliation, Andres Ceballos
A Multiscale Model Of The Neonatal Circulatory System Following Hybrid Norwood Palliation, Andres Ceballos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hypoplastic left heat syndrome (HLHS) is a complex cardiac malformation in neonates suffering from congenital heart disease and occurs in nearly 1 per 5000 births. HLHS is uniformly fatal within the first hours or days after birth as the severly malformed anatomies of the left ventricle, mitral, and aortic valves, and ascending aorta are not compatable with life. The regularly implemented treatment, the Norwood operation, is a complex open heart procedure that attempts to establish univenticular circulation by removing the atrial septum ( communicating the right and left ventricle), reconstructing the malformed aortic arch, and connecting the main pulmonary artery …
The Power Of Quantum Walk Insights, Implementation, And Applications, Chen Fu Chiang
The Power Of Quantum Walk Insights, Implementation, And Applications, Chen Fu Chiang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I investigate quantum walks in quantum computing from three aspects: the insights, the implementation, and the applications. Quantum walks are the quantum analogue of classical random walks. For the insights of quantum walks, I list and explain the required components for quantizing a classical random walk into a quantum walk. The components are, for instance, Markov chains, quantum phase estimation, and quantum spectrum theorem. I then demonstrate how the product of two reflections in the walk operator provides a quadratic speed-up, in comparison to the classical counterpart. For the implementation of quantum walks, I show the construction …

In recent years, multi-touch has been heralded as a revolution in humancomputer interaction. Multi-touch provides features such as gestural interaction, tangible interfaces, pen-based computing, and interface customization – features embraced by an increasingly tech-savvy public. However, multi-touch platforms have not been adopted as "everyday" computer interaction devices; that is, multi-touch has not been applied to general-purpose computing. The questions this thesis seeks to address are: Will the general public adopt these systems as their chief interaction paradigm? Can multi-touch provide such a compelling platform that it displaces the desktop mouse and keyboard? Is multi-touch truly the next revolution in human-computer …

Electimize A New Evolutionary Algorithm For Optimization With Applications In Construction Engineering, Raheem, Mohamed Abdel
Electimize A New Evolutionary Algorithm For Optimization With Applications In Construction Engineering, Raheem, Mohamed Abdel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Optimization is considered an essential step in reinforcing the efficiency of performance and economic feasibility of construction projects. In the past few decades, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have been widely utilized to solve various types of construction-related optimization problems due to their efficiency in finding good solutions in relatively short time periods. However, in many cases, these existing evolutionary algorithms failed to identify the optimal solution to several optimization problems. As such, it is deemed necessary to develop new approaches in order to help identify better-quality solutions. This doctoral research presents the development of a new evolutionary algorithm, named “Electimize,” that …
Development Of A Weigh-In-Motion System Using Acoustic Emission Sensors, Jeanne M. Bowie
Development Of A Weigh-In-Motion System Using Acoustic Emission Sensors, Jeanne M. Bowie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a system for weighing commercial vehicles in motion using acoustic emission sensors attached to a metal bar placed across the roadway. The signal from the sensors is analyzed by a computer and the vehicle weight is determined by a statistical model which correlates the acoustic emission parameters to the vehicle weight. Such a system would be portable and low-cost, allowing for the measurement of vehicle weights in much the same way commercial tube and radar counters routinely collect vehicle speed and count. The system could be used to collect vehicle speed and count data as well as …
