Impedance Boundary Conditions In A Hybrid Fem/Mom Formulation, Hao Wang, Minjia Xu, Chen Wang, Todd H. Hubing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When numerically modeling structures with imperfect conductors or conductors coated with a dielectric material, impedance boundary conditions (IBCs) can substantially reduce the amount of computation required. This paper incorporates the IBC in the finite-element method (FEM) part of a FEM/method of moments (FEM/MoM) modeling code. Properties of the new formulation are investigated and the formulation is used to model three practical electromagnetic problems. Results are compared to either measured data or other numerical results. The effect of the IBC on the condition number of hybrid FEM/MoM matrices is also discussed.

Neuro Emission Controller For Minimizing Cyclic Dispersion In Spark Ignition Engines, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel neural network (NN) controller is developed to control spark ignition (SI) engines at extreme lean conditions. The purpose of neurocontroller is to reduce the cyclic dispersion at lean operation even when the engine dynamics are unknown. The stability analysis of the closed-loop control system is given and the boundedness of all signals is ensured. Results demonstrate that the cyclic dispersion is reduced significantly using the proposed controller. The neuro controller can also be extended to minimize engine emissions with high EGR levels, where similar complex cyclic dynamics are observed. Further, the proposed approach can be applied to control …

Over-Distention Operation Of Cascaded Multilevel Inverters, X. Kou, Keith Corzine, M. W. Wielebski Jan 2003

Over-Distention Operation Of Cascaded Multilevel Inverters, X. Kou, Keith Corzine, M. W. Wielebski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Established research has shown that cascaded multilevel inverters can provide more voltage vectors per number of active semiconductors compared to typical multilevel converters. This feature is significant for increasing the drive performance as well as reducing the drive complexity and losses. When two inverters are cascaded, the maximum number of effective levels (or maximal distention operation) is the product of the number of levels of the individual inverters. It is possible to operate the cascaded inverter beyond maximum distention. The over-distention operation is desirable since it effectively increases the number of voltage levels in spite of some missing switching levels. …

Coolant Pump Drive: An Application For Switched Reluctance Machines, Chris S. Edrington, Babak Fahimi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Current vehicle architectures utilize belt driven components such as the coolant pump, air-conditioner, power steering pump etc. However, the trend toward more electric vehicles requires novel applications of machines to replace these inefficient mechanical components. It is essential that electrical machines used in automotive applications be compatible with the corresponding mechanical and electrical terminals. Furthermore, replacement of belt driven components with electrical drives, should be performed as efficient and cost effective as possible. Switched Reluctance Machines (SRM) are both cost effective and very robust to the effects of temperature variation. They also offer a very wide speed range and an …

Million City Traveling Salesman Problem Solution By Divide And Conquer Clustering With Adaptive Resonance Neural Networks, Samuel A. Mulder, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a very hard optimization problem in the field of operations research. It has been shown to be NP-complete and is an often-used benchmark for new optimization techniques. One of the main challenges with this problem is that standard, non-AI heuristic approaches such as the Lin-Kernighan algorithm (LK) and the chained LK variant are currently very effective and in wide use for the common fully connected, Euclidean variant that is considered here. This paper presents an algorithm that uses adaptive resonance theory (ART) in combination with a variation of the Lin-Kernighan local optimization algorithm to …

Optimization Of An Automotive Generator Using Evolutionary Programming, A. Koenig, J. Williams, Steven Pekarek

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the primary design requirements of automotive generation systems is maximizing power density subject to the constraint of minimizing overall system cost. However, with progress made in reduction of automotive drive train noise, the torque ripple of the generator has been found to be a dominant noise source under idle conditions at high electrical load. Thus, an added design constraint is the minimization of torque ripple produced by the machine. in order to meet these objectives, numerical tools have been developed to automate the design process. a primary tool is an evolutionary algorithm that has been integrated within a …

Parallel and distributed systems may operate in an environment that undergoes unpredictable changes causing certain system performance features to degrade. Such systems need robustness to guarantee limited degradation despite fluctuations in the behavior of its component parts or environment. This research investigates the robustness of an allocation of resources to tasks in parallel and distributed systems. The main contributions of this paper are (1) a mathematical description of a metric for the robustness of a resource allocation with respect to desired system performance features against perturbations in system and environmental conditions, and (2) a procedure for deriving a robustness metric …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An in situ self-diagnostic technique for a dissolved oxygen microsensor is proposed in an effort to devise an intelligent microsensor system with an integrated electro-chemical actuation electrode. With a built-in platinum microelectrode that surrounds the microsensor, two kinds of microenvironments (oxygen-saturated or oxygen-depleted phases) can be created by water electrolysis depending on the polarity. The functionality of the microsensor can be checked during these microenvironment phases. The polarographic oxygen microsensor is fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate (Kapton/sup ©/) and the influences of electrochemical and hydrodynamic conditions on the sensor responses have been investigated.

Spectrum Visualization And Measurement Of Power Parameters Of Microwave Wideband Noise, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, V. A. Konkin, V. Radchenko

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for an adequate visualization of a microwave intense noise envelope in a wide frequency range (several octaves), measuring of its power parameters, and detection of a narrowband signal with unknown frequency and power against the noise background is presented. This method is based on an application of a nonheterodyne principle of microwave frequency (and power) conversion using a gyromagnetic converter, which operates in two regimes in turn: the resonance detection and the cross-multiplication. A block-scheme and an operation of a two-channel measuring device combining the mentioned functions are discussed.

Control Of Cascaded Multi-Level Inverters, Keith Corzine, Fang Zheng Peng, J. Wang, M. W. Wielebski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new type of multi-level inverter is introduced which is created by cascading two three-phase three-level inverters using the load connection. This new inverter can operate as a nine-level inverter and naturally splits the power conversion into a higher voltage lower-frequency inverter and a lower-voltage higher frequency inverter. This type of system presents particular advantages to naval ship propulsion systems which rely on high power quality, survivable drives. New control methods are described involving both joint and separate control of the individual three-level inverters. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both controls. A laboratory set-up at the Naval Surface Warfare …

In this paper, new sum-of-sinusoids statistical simulation models are proposed for Rayleigh fading channels. These new models employ random path gain, random initial phase, and conditional random Doppler frequency for all individual sinusoids. It is shown that the autocorrelations and cross correlations of the quadrature components, and the autocorrelation of the complex envelope of the new simulators match the desired ones exactly, even if the number of sinusoids is as small as a single-digit integer. Moreover, the probability density functions of the envelope and phase, the level crossing rate, the average fade duration, and the autocorrelation of the squared fading …

A Unique Fault-Tolerant Design For Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters, X. Kou, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a unique design for flying capacitor type multilevel inverters with fault-tolerant features. When a single-switch fault per phase occurs, the new design can still provide the same number of converting levels by shorting the fault power semiconductors and reconfiguring the gate controls. The most attractive point of the proposed design is that it can undertake the single-switch fault per phase without scarifying power converting quality. This paper also discusses the capacitor balancing approach under fault-conditions, which is an essential part of controlling flying capacitor type multilevel inverters. Suggested fault diagnosing methods are also discussed in this paper. …

Application Of The Cavity Model To Lossy Power-Return Plane Structures In Printed Circuit Boards, Minjia Xu, Hao Wang, Todd H. Hubing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power-return plane pairs in printed circuit boards are often modeled as resonant cavities. Cavity models can be used to calculate transfer impedance parameters used to predict levels of power bus noise. Techniques for applying the cavity model to lossy printed circuit board geometries rely on a low-loss assumption in their derivations. Boards that have been designed to damp power bus resonances (e.g., boards with embedded capacitance) generally violate this low-loss assumption. This paper investigates the validity of the cavity model when applied to printed circuit board structures where the board resonances are significantly damped. Cavity modeling results for sample lossy …

Dual Heuristic Programming Excitation Neurocontrol For Generators In A Multimachine Power System, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design of nonlinear optimal neurocontrollers that replace the conventional automatic voltage regulators for excitation control of turbogenerators in a multimachine power system is presented in this paper. The neurocontroller design is based on dual heuristic programming (DHP), a powerful adaptive critic technique. The feedback variables are completely based on local measurements from the generators. Simulations on a three-machine power system demonstrate that DHP-based neurocontrol is much more effective than the conventional proportional-integral-derivative control for improving dynamic performance and stability of the power grid under small and large disturbances. This paper also shows how to design optimal multiple neurocontrollers for …

The Development Of A Closed-Form Expression For The Input Impedance Of Power-Return Plane Structures, Minjia Xu, Todd H. Hubing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In multilayer printed circuit boards, the noise on the power bus is influenced by the impedance between the power and ground planes. Power-bus noise estimates require an accurate estimate of the power-bus input impedance. This paper develops a closed-form estimate of the input impedance for circular power-return plane structures. When the structure is lossy (e.g., boards employing embedded capacitance or densely populated boards), the energy reflected from the board edge does not significantly affect the input impedance. In general, the expressions developed here for circular structures can be used to estimate the impedance of lossy power-return plane structures of any …

Query-Based Learning For Aerospace Applications, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, J. J. Choi, J. L. Vian

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Models of real-world applications often include a large number of parameters with a wide dynamic range, which contributes to the difficulties of neural network training. Creating the training data set for such applications becomes costly, if not impossible. In order to overcome the challenge, one can employ an active learning technique known as query-based learning (QBL) to add performance-critical data to the training set during the learning phase, thereby efficiently improving the overall learning/generalization. The performance-critical data can be obtained using an inverse mapping called network inversion (discrete network inversion and continuous network inversion) followed by oracle query. This paper …
