Online Reinforcement Learning-Based Neural Network Controller Design For Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel reinforcement learning neural network (NN)-based controller, referred to adaptive critic controller, is proposed for general multi-input and multi- output affine unknown nonlinear discrete-time systems in the presence of bounded disturbances. Adaptive critic designs consist of two entities, an action network that produces optimal solution and a critic that evaluates the performance of the action network. The critic is termed adaptive as it adapts itself to output the optimal cost-to-go function and the action network is adapted simultaneously based on the information from the critic. In our online learning method, one NN is designated as the …

Predictive Modeling Of The Effects Of Skew And Imbalance On Radiated Emi From Cables, J. Chen, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Knighten, Jun Fan, J. Flavin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides an approach for predicting the effects of skew and imbalance on radiated emission of cables inside a commercial 19-inch rack-based cabinet. Scattering parameters (S-parameters) for two sets of cable assembly are measured with a four-port vector network analyzer (VNA) and converted into mixed mode S-parameters. Time-domain input signals with different slew rates and different amount of skew are transferred into frequency-domain using fast Fourier transform (FFT). The spectra of radiation emission associated with different inputs are then estimated.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Segmental lumped circuits are derived from coupled transmission line model for a narrow slot on the power bus. Both electric and magnetic coupling are taken into account by distributed inductances and capacitances. Then a SPICE- compatible circuit model for the power bus with the narrow slot is proposed. In this model, the segmental lumped circuits are connected to the equivalent circuit, which is derived by a hybrid cavity model and segmentation method for irregular power/ground planes. The model is validated by comparing with the calculations of finite element method (FEM) for the self or mutual impedances of the two port …

A finite-different time-domain subgrid algorithm locally refines the mesh at regions requiring higher resolution. A novel separation of spatial and temporal subgridding interfaces is presented that allows implementing a novel spatial subgridding method and investigating the stability of each subalgorithm individually. Details are given for a spatial subgridding algorithm having a 1:3 mesh ratio. In the spatial subgridding algorithm, the fine-mesh is constructed with a recessed interface and the interpolation scheme is designed to be symmetric to maintain the stability of the update process. The stability of the spatial subgridding algorithm is analyzed with a matrix method. Numerical examples showing …

Advanced Control And Analysis Of Cascaded Multilevel Converters Based On P-Q Compensation, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces new controls for the cascaded multilevel power converter. This converter is also sometimes referred to as a ldquohybrid converterrdquo since it splits high-voltage/low-frequency and low-voltage/pulsewidth-modulation (PWM)-frequency power production between ldquobulkrdquo and ldquoconditioningrdquo converters respectively. Cascaded multilevel converters achieve higher power quality with a given switch count when compared to traditional multilevel converters. This is a particularly favorable option for high power and high performance applications such as naval ship propulsion. This paper first presents a new control method for the topology using three-level bulk and conditioning inverters connected in series through a three-phase load. This control avoids …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aluminum structures exposed to the elements are susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion may cause various mechanical and structural deficiencies such as material thinning. It is desirable to rapidly detect and evaluate the properties of an aluminum substrate early in the corrosion process to avoid costly maintenance actions later. There are several nondestructive testing methods for this purpose. To investigate capabilities of millimeter wave, conventional eddy current, and flash thermography techniques for detection of large corrosion areas in aluminum substrates, two corroded samples were inspected with and without dielectric coating (appliqué). This paper presents the results of the c-scan imaging of these …

Identification Of Induction Machines Stator Currents With Generalized Neurons, Jing Huang, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new approach to identify the nonlinear model of an induction machine using two generalized neurons (GNs) is presented in this paper. Compared to the multilayer perceptron feedforward neural network, a GN has simpler structure and lesser requirement in terms of memory storage which is makes it attractive for hardware implementation. This method shows that with less number of weights, GN is able to learn the dynamics of an induction machine. The proposed model is made by two coupled networks. A modified particle swarm optimization algorithm is designed to solve this distinctive GN training problem. A pseudo-random binary sequence signal …

Intelligent Local And Hierarchical Control Of Facts Devices, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an overview of the applications of intelligent control techniques on local and hierarchical control of FACTS devices. These control techniques are superior to the conventional linear/nonlinear control schemes in the sense that they are independent of any mathematical model of the power system to be controlled. In addition, they do not depend on the operating conditions and the configuration of the system to which the FACTS device is connected. A static compensator (STATCOM) is used as the example in order to compare the performances of the proposed intelligent controllers with those of their linear counterparts. Nevertheless, the …

Normalized Double-Talk Detection Based On Microphone And Aec Error Cross-Correlation, M. A. Iqbal, J. W. Stokes, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present two different double-talk detection schemes for Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC). First, we present a novel normalized detection statistic based on the cross-correlation coefficient between the microphone signal and the cancellation error. The decision statistic is designed in such a way that it meets the needs of an optimal double-talk detector. We also show that the proposed detection statistic converges to the recently proposed normalized cross-correlation based double-talk detector, the best known cross-correlation based detector. Next, we present a new hybrid double-talk detection scheme based on a cross-correlation coefficient and two signal detectors. The hybrid algorithm …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes a methodology to extract effective electrical properties for periodic composite medium. The extraction algorithm is based on a periodic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results are compared with conventional mixing theories and 3D Fourier series expansion methods. Two results show satisfactory agreement. With the extracted effective permittivity and conductivity, one can readily use these parameters to study electrical properties of composite materials with arbitrary micro-geometry and the shielding effects of using composite materials.

In the recent years, continuous-wave near-field and lens-focused millimeter wave imaging systems have been effectively used to demonstrate their utility for producing high-resolution images of metallic structures covered with spay on foam insulation (SOFI) such as the Space Shuttle external fuel tank. However, for some specifc structures a certain interference pattern may be superimposed on the produced images. There are methods by which the influence of this unwanted interference can be reduced, such as the incorporation of an incidence angle and the proper use of signal polarization. This paper presents the basics of this problem and describes the use of …

A New Battery/Ultracapacitor Energy Storage System Design And Its Motor Drive Integration For Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new energy storage system (ESS) design, including both batteries and ultracapacitors (UCs) in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and electric vehicle applications. The conventional designs require a dc-dc converter to interface the UC unit. Herein, the UC can be directly switched across the motor drive dc link during the peak power demands. The resulting wide voltage variation due to UC power transfer is addressed by the simple modulator that is introduced in this paper, so that the motor drive performance is not disrupted. Based on this new methodology, this paper further introduces two ESS schemes with different …

Leakage Minimization Technique For Nanoscale Cmos Vlsi, Kyung Ki Kim, Yong-Bin Kim, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Because of the continued scaling of technology and supply-threshold voltage, leakage power has become more significant in power dissipation of nanoscale CMOS circuits. Therefore, estimating the total leakage power is critical to designing low-power digital circuits. In nanometer CMOS circuits, the main leakage components are the subthreshold, gate-tunneling, and reverse-biased junction band-to-band-tunneling (BTBT) leakage currents.

A Unique Ultracapacitor Direct Integration Scheme In Multilevel Motor Drives For Large Vehicle Propulsion, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new set of methods to directly integrate ultracapacitor banks into cascaded multilevel inverters that are used for large vehicle propulsion. The idea is to replace the regular dc-link capacitors with ultracapacitors in order to combine the energy storage unit and motor drive. This approach eliminates the need for an interfacing dc-dc converter and considerably improves the efficiency of regenerative braking energy restoration in large vehicles using multilevel converters. Utilizing the proposed modulation control set, the two cascaded inverters can have their dc voltage levels maintained at any ratio (even a noninteger ratio) or dynamically varied over …

An analytical model of a composite dielectric presented in this paper is the extension of Maxwell Garnett formulation. It takes into account the simultaneous statistical (Gaussian) distribution of conductivity and aspect ratio of inclusions. The inclusions are randomly oriented elongated conducting spheroids at concentrations below the percolation threshold. The formulation presented herein is limited to microwave frequencies. However, taking subtle frequency-dependent effects that play important part at optical frequencies into account is straightforward. Some results of computations of microwave complex effective permittivity of composites with different input parameters have been obtained using analytical and numerical integration in Maple 10 software. …

Singular Perturbation Theory For Dc-Dc Converters And Application To Pfc Converters, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many control schemes for dc-dc converters begin with the assertion that inductor currents are "fast" states and capacitor voltages are "slow" states. This assertion must be true for power factor correction (PFC) converters to allow independent control of current and voltage. In the present work, singular perturbation theory is applied to boost converters to provide rigorous justification of the time scale separation. Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolsky (KBM) averaging is used to include switching ripple effects. A relationship between inductance, capacitance, load resistance, and loss resistances derives from an analysis of an approximate model. Similar results hold for buck and buck-boost converters. An experimental …

Differential Evolution Approach For Reactive Power Optimization Of Nigerian Grid System, G. A. Bakare, G. Krost, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, U. O. Aliyu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The goal of reactive power dispatch is to minimize the system losses and improve the system voltage profiles at all times. This is achieved by adjusting various generating units' excitation systems continuously, discrete tap positions of on-load tap changers of transformers as well as switching of correct doses of inductors or capacitors. This is a mixed integer non-linear optimization problem. In this paper, the differential evolution (DE), a novel evolutionary computation technique which was originally designed for continuous problems is applied to solve this problem. DE appears to ally qualities of established computational intelligence (CI) techniques with a more striking …

Flatness-Based Feedback Linearization Of A Synchronous Machine Model With Static Excitation And Fast Turbine Valving, E. C. Anene, U. O. Aliyu, J. Levine, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses attention on the concept of flatness-based feedback linearization and its practical application to the design of an optimal transient controller for a synchronous machine. The feedback linearization scheme of interest requires the generation of a flat output from which the feedback control law can easily be designed. Thus the computation of the flat output for reduced order model of the synchronous machine with simplified turbine dynamics is hereby presented. The corresponding linearized compensator is derived as well as the nonlinear controller for transient stabilization of a synchronous machine subjected to large disturbances. The transient behavior of a …

Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Modeling Of Induction Motors, S. D. Sudhoff, Brian T. Kuhn, Keith Corzine, Brian T. Branecky

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finite element models are invaluable for determining expected machine performance. However, finite element analysis can be computationally intense; particularly if a large numbers of studies or high bandwidth studies are required. One method to avoid this difficulty is to extract machine parameters from the finite element model and use the parameters in lumped parameter models. While often useful, such an approach does not represent space harmonics or asymmetries in the motor. A methodology for constructing a state-variable model, based on a magnetic equivalent circuit of the motor is described herein. In addition, the parameters for this model are based solely …

A Novel Impedance Measurement Technique For Power Electronic Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When designing and building power systems that contain power electronic switching sources and loads, system integrators must consider the frequency-dependent impedance characteristics at an interface to ensure system stability. Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedance for both dc and ac systems and it is often necessary to measure system impedance through experiments. Traditional injection-based impedance measurement techniques require multiple online tests which lead to many disadvantages. The impedance identification method proposed in this paper greatly reduces online test time by modeling the system with recurrent neural networks. The recurrent networks are trained with measured …
