Analysis Of Simultaneous Switching Noise Coupling In Multilayer Power/Ground Planes With Segmentation Method And Cavity Model, Gang Feng, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An accurate power bus model is essential for predicting noise coupling in high-speed printed circuit board (PCB) and package designs. with a complex multilayer structure, the power bus is often modeled using numerical simulation methods. However, full-wave approaches are computationally inefficient, or even infeasible for extremely complicated geometries. Fortunately, the segmentation method makes it possible to combine different types of models together, and both simulation accuracy and efficiency can be obtained through this divide-and-conquer strategy. after segmentation, one of the fundamental blocks is a parallel plane pair. for this block, analytical expressions for the impedance (Z) matrix are available for …

An Intrinsic Circuit Model For Multiple Vias In An Irregular Plate Pair Through Rigorous Electromagnetic Analysis, Yao Jiang Zhang, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An irregular plate pair with multiple vias is analyzed by the segmentation method that divides the plate pair into a plate domain and via domains. in the via domains, all the parallel-plate modes are considered, while in the plate domain, only the propagating modes are included to account for the coupling among vias and the reflection from plate edges. Boundary conditions at both vias and plate edges are enforced and all parasitic components of via circuit are expressed analytically in terms of parallel-plate modes. the work presented in this paper indicates that a previous physics-Based via circuit model from intuition …

based on the principle of divide and conquer, in this paper we propose an efficient traceback protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, the protocol is capable of detecting a hotspot where the attacker resides. It works by dividing the forwarding path of every packet into multiple interweaving fragments and each reachable fragment is individually reconstructed during a traceback process. through simulations in theoretical mobility models as well as real mobility traces, we show that each traceback of our scheme can attribute to a very small hotspot and the attacker can be accurately identified after a number of traceback operations. © …

Reliability Modeling And Analysis Of Clockless Wave Pipeline Core For Embedded Combinational Logic Design, Tao Feng, Noh-Jin Park, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a model for analyzing the reliability of a clockless wave pipeline as an intellectual property (IP) core for embedded design. This design requires different clocking requirements by each embedded IP core during integration. Therefore, either partial or global lack of synchronization of the embedded clocking is considered for the data flow. The clockless wave pipeline represents an alternative to a traditional pipeline scheme; it requires an innovative computing model that is readily suitable for high-throughput computing by heterogeneous IP logic cores embedded in system-on-chip (SoC). A clockless wave pipeline technique relies on local asynchronous operation for seamless …

Asymmetrical Cascade Multilevel Converters With Noninteger Or Dynamically Changing Dc Voltage Ratios: Concepts And Modulation Techniques, Shuai Lu, Sébastien Mariéthoz, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Asymmetrical cascade multilevel inverters offer a high number of voltage levels with a given switch count. for a given topology, the number of levels depends on the configuration of the dc voltage (ratios). This paper deals with the design and control of such converters with Non integer dc voltage ratio, which leads to unevenly distributed space vectors. It describes how to select the dc voltage ratio configurations that yield space vectors as evenly distributed as possible. It describes how to produce an effective PWM modulation that allows generating undistorted current even in the presence of (some) unevenly distributed space vectors. …

Over The Air Programming On Imote2-Based Sensor Networks, Rashmdfi Parthasarathy, Nina Peterson, Wen Zhan Song, Ali Hurson, Behrooz A. Shirazi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Some of the main challenges that Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) face are reliability, flexibility and security. When WSNs deployed in remote locations need to be reprogrammed, environmental conditions often make it impossible to physically retrieve them. over the Air Programming (OAP) plays an important role in achieving this task. Several platform dependent protocols have been developed for OAP including Deluge [4] and MOAP [3]. Due to the restrictions of these platform-dependent protocols, any modification to the hardware requires modifications to the underlying protocol. for example, using OAP for Imote2 sensors requires porting Deluge from an existing hardware. This paper reports …

Channel Equalization And Symbol Detection For Single-Carrier Mimo Systems In The Presence Of Multiple Carrier Frequency Offsets, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao, Khaled Ben Letaief

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new frequency-domain channel equalization and symbol detection scheme is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) single-carrier broadband wireless systems in the presence of severely frequency-selective channel fading and multiple unknown carrier-frequency offsets (CFOs). Multiple CFOs cause severe phase distortion in the equalized data for large block lengths and/or constellation sizes, thus yielding poor detection performance. Instead of explicitly estimating the CFOs and then compensating them, the proposed scheme estimates the rotated phases (not frequencies) caused by multiple unknown CFOs and then removes the phase rotations from the equalized data before symbol detection. the estimation accuracy of the phase rotation is …

Portable, accurate, and relatively inexpensive high-frequency vector network analyzers (VNAs) have great utility for a wide range of applications, encompassing microwave circuit characterization, reflectometry, imaging, material characterization, and nondestructive testing to name a few. To meet the rising demand for VNAs possessing the aforementioned attributes, we present a novel and simple VNA design based on a standing-wave probing device and an electronically controllable phase shifter. The phase shifter is inserted between a device under test (DUT) and a standing-wave probing device. The complex reflection coefficient of the DUT is then obtained from multiple standing-wave voltage measurements taken for several different …

Historical Document Enhancement Using Lut Classification, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Gady Agam, Ophir Frieder

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The fast evolution of scanning and computing technologies in recent years has led to the creation of large collections of scanned historical documents. It is almost always the case that these scanned documents suffer from some form of degradation. Large degradations make documents hard to read and substantially deteriorate the performance of automated document processing systems. Enhancement of degraded document images is normally performed assuming global degradation models. When the degradation is large, global degradation models do not perform well. In contrast, we propose to learn local degradation models and use them in enhancing degraded document images. Using a semi-automated …

Frequency-dependent causal RLGC(f) models are proposed for single-ended and coupled transmission lines. Dielectric loss, dielectric dispersion, and skin-effect loss are taken into account. The dielectric substrate is described by the two-term Debye frequency dependence, and the transmission line conductors are of finite conductivity. In this paper, three frequency-dependent RLGC models are studied. One is the known frequency-dependent analytical RLGC model ( RLGC-I), the second is the RLGC(f) model (RLGC-II) proposed in this paper, and the third (RLGC-III) is same as the RLGC -II, but with causality enforced by the Hilbert transform in frequency domain. The causalities of the three RLGC …

Recurrent Neural Networks Based Impedance Measurement Technique For Power Electronic Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine, Jing Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When designing and building power systems that contain power electronic switching sources and loads, system integrators must consider the frequency-dependent impedance characteristics at an interface to ensure system stability. Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedance, and it is often necessary to measure system impedance through experiments. Traditional injection-based impedance measurement techniques require multiple online testing that lead to many disadvantages, including prolonged test time, operating point variations, and impedance values at limited frequency points. The impedance identification method proposed in this paper greatly reduces online testing time by modeling the system with recurrent neural …

A Novel Approach To Interarea Oscillation Damping By Unified Power Flow Controllers Utilizing Ultracapacitors, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Yilu Liu, Stan Atcitty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper discusses a novel approach for damping interarea oscillations in a bulk power network using multiple unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) utilizing ultracapacitors, also known more generally as electrochemical capacitors (ECs). In this paper, a new control is introduced to mitigate interarea oscillations by directly controlling the UPFCs' sending and receiving bus voltages that better utilizes the stored energy in the ECs. The results of this controller are compared with and without ECs. The proposed control provides better interarea oscillation mitigation when applied to multiple UPFCs in the 118-bus IEEE test system.

Reducing Common-Mode Voltage In Three-Phase Sine-Triangle Pwm With Interleaved Carriers, Jonathan W. Kimball, Maciej Jan Zawodniok Feb 2010

Reducing Common-Mode Voltage In Three-Phase Sine-Triangle Pwm With Interleaved Carriers, Jonathan W. Kimball, Maciej Jan Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interleaving PWM waveforms is a proven method to reduce ripple in dc-dc converters. The present work explores interleaving for three-phase motor drives. Fourier analysis shows that interleaving the carriers in conventional uniform PWM significantly reduces the common-mode voltage. New DSP hardware supports interleaving directly with changes to just two registers at setup time, so no additional computation time is needed during operation. The common-mode voltage reduction ranges from 36% at full modulation to 67% when idling with zero modulation. Third harmonic injection slightly reduces the advantage (to 26% at full modulation). However, the maximum RMS common-mode voltage is still less …
