Event Sampled Optimal Adaptive Regulation Of Linear And A Class Of Nonlinear Systems, Avimanyu Sahoo Jan 2015

Event Sampled Optimal Adaptive Regulation Of Linear And A Class Of Nonlinear Systems, Avimanyu Sahoo

Doctoral Dissertations

In networked control systems (NCS), wherein a communication network is used to close the feedback loop, the transmission of feedback signals and execution of the controller is currently carried out at periodic sampling instants. Thus, this scheme requires a significant computational power and network bandwidth. In contrast, the event-based aperiodic sampling and control, which is introduced recently, appears to relieve the computational burden and high network resource utilization. Therefore, in this dissertation, a suite of novel event sampled adaptive regulation schemes in both discrete and continuous time domain for uncertain linear and nonlinear systems are designed.

Event sampled Q-learning and …

Resistance Switching Of Electrodeposited Cuprous Oxide, Sanaz Yazdanparast Jan 2015

Resistance Switching Of Electrodeposited Cuprous Oxide, Sanaz Yazdanparast

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, the resistance switching behavior of electrodeposited cuprous oxide (Cu2O) thin films in Au/Cu2O/top electrode (Pt, Au-Pd, Al) cells was studied. After an initial FORMING process, the fabricated cells show reversible switching between a low resistance state (16.6 Ω) and a high resistance state (0.4 x 106 Ω). Changing the resistance states in cuprous oxide films depends on the magnitude of the applied voltage which corresponds to unipolar resistance switching behavior of this material. The endurance and retention tests indicate a potential application of the fabricated cells for nonvolatile resistance switching random access …

"The precise localization and tracking of electronic devices via their unintended emissions has a broad range of commercial and security applications. Active stimulation of the receivers of such devices with a known signal generates very low power unintended emissions. This dissertation presents localization and tracking of multiple devices using both simulation and experimental data in the form of five papers.

First the localization of multiple emitting devices through active stimulation under multipath fading with a Smooth MUSIC based scheme in the near field region is presented. Spatial smoothing helps to separate the correlated sources and the multipath fading and results …

Quartz-Mems: Wet Chemical Etching Assisted By Electromagnetic Energy Sources For The Development Of Quartz Crystal To Be Used For Microelectromechanical Systems, William J. Clower Oct 2014

Quartz-Mems: Wet Chemical Etching Assisted By Electromagnetic Energy Sources For The Development Of Quartz Crystal To Be Used For Microelectromechanical Systems, William J. Clower

Doctoral Dissertations

Quartz crystal resonators have been the most commonly used timing devices to date. Today's timing market requires devices to be as small as possible and consume smaller amounts of energy. Because of the market demand, many startup companies have formed to develop silicon resonators as timing devices. Silicon resonators have poor noise and temperature performance (due to its linear temperature versus frequency coefficient). At the moment the only advantage that silicon resonators have over quartz crystal resonators is a small form factor. The photolithography processing method currently being used in industry is a very tedious task, requiring multiple etching steps …

Computational Study Of Sodium Magnesium Hydride For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Fernando Antonio Soto Valle Oct 2014

Computational Study Of Sodium Magnesium Hydride For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Fernando Antonio Soto Valle

Doctoral Dissertations

Hydrogen offers considerable potential benefits as an energy carrier. However, safe and convenient storage of hydrogen is one of the biggest challenges to be resolved in the near future. Sodium magnesium hydride (NaMgH 3) has attracted attention as a hydrogen storage material due to its light weight and high volumetric hydrogen density of 88 kg/m3. Despite the advantages, hydrogen release in this material occurs at approximately 670 K, which is well above the operable range for on-board hydrogen storage applications. In this regard, hydrogen release may be facilitated by substitution doping of transition-metals. This dissertation describes first-principles computational methods that …

Applications Of Halloysite Nanocontainers For Functional Protective Coating, Anupam Ramesh Joshi

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study we have explored the applications of halloysite clay nanotubes as a nanocontainer. Halloysite nanotubes are used as a storage unit for anticorrosion agents, flame retardants, and a dopant to extend the curing time for geopolymer composites. Halloysite is a naturally occurring clay mineral with a chemical formula of Al2Si2O 5(OH)4 · 2 H2O and is identical to kaolinite with the exception that it holds an additional water monolayer in its interlayered spaces. Upon heating at higher temperatures, halloysite loses the additional water monolayer, and this variant known colloquially as "meta-halloysite" has a chemical formula of Al2Si2O5(OH) 4 …

Quantum Levitation Using Metamaterials, Venkatesh K. Pappakrishnan Jul 2014

Quantum Levitation Using Metamaterials, Venkatesh K. Pappakrishnan

Doctoral Dissertations

The emergence of an attractive vacuum force (Casimir force) between two purely dielectric materials can lead to an increase in the friction and the stiction effects in nanoscale devices, resulting in degradation or decreased performance. Thus, it is of high practical importance that the conditions for the reversal of the Casimir force from attractive to repulsive are identified. Although the repulsive Casimir force has been considered for high dielectric materials as an intermediate (between the plates) medium, so far no realistic system has been proposed that can demonstrate quantum levitation with air/vacuum as a host medium. Since air is the …

On Electromagnetic And Quantum Invisibility, Pattabhiraju Chowdary Mundru Jul 2014

On Electromagnetic And Quantum Invisibility, Pattabhiraju Chowdary Mundru

Doctoral Dissertations

The principle objective of this dissertation is to investigate the fundamental properties of electromagnetic wave interactions with artificially fabricated materials i.e., metamaterials for application in advanced stealth technology called electromagnetic cloaking. The main goal is to theoretically design a metamaterial shell around an object that completely eliminates the dipolar and higher order multipolar scattering, thus making the object invisible.

In this context, we developed a quasi-effective medium theory that determines the optical properties of multi-layered-composites beyond the quasi-static limit. The proposed theory exactly reproduces the far-field scattering/extinction cross sections through an iterative process in which mode-dependent quasi-effective impedances of the …

Study And Development Of Sulfated Zirconia Based Proton Exchange Fuel Cell Membranes, Brittany Wilson Kemp Apr 2014

Study And Development Of Sulfated Zirconia Based Proton Exchange Fuel Cell Membranes, Brittany Wilson Kemp

Doctoral Dissertations

With the increasing consumption of energy, fuel cells are among the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels, provided some technical challenges are overcome. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been investigated and improvements have been made, but the problem with Nafion®, the main membrane for PEMFCs, has not been solved. Nafion® restricts the membranes from operating at higher temperatures, thus preventing them from working in small electronics. The problem is to develop a novel fuel cell membrane that performs comparably to Nafion® in PEMFCs.

The membranes were fabricated by applying sulfated zirconia, via template wetting, to porous alumina membranes. …

Far-Field Prediction Using Only Magnetic Near-Field Scanning And Modeling Delay Variations In Cmos Digital Logic Circuits Due To Electrical Disturbances In The Power Supply, Xu Gao

Doctoral Dissertations

"The first topic of this dissertation is far-field prediction using only magnetic near-field scanning. Near-field scanning has been used extensively for the far-field estimation of antennas. Applied to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems, near-field scanning has been used to estimate emissions from both integrated circuits (ICs) and printed circuit boards (PCBs). Interest in applying far-field predictions using near-field to EMI/EMC problems has recently grown. To predict the far-field emissions from a PCB in the top half space, the near-field data on a planar surface above PCB usually is sufficient. However, near-field measurement on only one planar surface may not be enough …

"Bioactive glasses have several attractive properties in hard and soft tissue repair but their brittleness limited their use, as scaffolding materials, for applications in load- bearing hard tissue repair. At the same time, because of their bioactive properties, they are being studied more often for soft tissue repair. In the present work, a new glass/polymer composite scaffold was developed for the repair of load-bearing bones with high flexural strength and without brittle behavior. The new composites have 2.5 times higher flexural strength and ~100 times higher work of fracture (without catastrophic failure) compared to a similar bare glass scaffold.

Two New Families Of High-Gain Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters For Dc-Microgrids, Venkata Anand Kishore Prabhala

Doctoral Dissertations

"Distributing the electric power in dc form is an appealing solution in many applications such as telecommunications, data centers, commercial buildings, and microgrids. A high gain dc-dc power electronic converter can be used to individually link low-voltage elements such as solar panels, fuel cells, and batteries to the dc voltage bus which is usually 400 volts. This way, it is not required to put such elements in a series string to build up their voltages. Consequently, each element can function at it optimal operating point regardless of the other elements in the system. In this dissertation, first a comparative study …
