Investigating The Interaction Between The Recycled Components And The Asphalt Binders, Plant, Lab, And Field Mixes, Eslam Deef-Allah

Doctoral Dissertations

"Modifying asphalt binders and mixes with recycled components is common practice due to their environmental and economic merits. Literature has indicated that different recycled components interact with (blend with) asphalt differently, ranging from no blending, partial blending, or full blending. The degree of blending between recycled components and virgin asphalt binders (VABs) and the exchanged components impact the performance of modified asphalt binders. However, the nature of the interaction process between the recycled components and the VABs is not fully understood. The primary objective of this study was to explore the interactions between recycled components and VABs. By understanding the …

Theoretical Determination Of The Yield Curve For Unsaturated Soils, Sara Fayek Jan 2022

Theoretical Determination Of The Yield Curve For Unsaturated Soils, Sara Fayek

Doctoral Dissertations

"An important step to developing a good understanding of the behavior of unsaturated soils is to adopt a formal and simple constitutive framework and to conduct high-quality and short-time experiments. Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) was the first elastoplastic constitutive model for unsaturated soils. The yield curve, which separates the elastic region from the elastoplastic region, is an important aspect of constitutive modeling for unsaturated soils. Most concepts for unsaturated soils were developed based upon the results from suction-controlled triaxial (SCTX) tests. Though, the SCTX tests on unsaturated soils are costly, time-consuming, and laborious, and their results are questionable. This study …

"Cable harnesses are widely used in modern vehicles to power electric systems locating at different locations throughout the vehicle and to establish signal channels for data communications between these systems. Generally, a cable harness consists of multiple wires and its geometry can be very complicated, making full-wave modeling and simulation approaches computational resource-intensive. To cut down the computational effort, the hybrid multiconductor transmission-line (MTL) method has been developed, and the generalized MTL (GMTL) method and the multiple scattering (MS) method have been developed to improve the accuracy of the hybrid MTL method. In this research, the convergence issue in the …

Multi-Stage Multi-Market Optimal Bidding Strategy In Electricity Markets, Hossein Mehdipourpicha Jan 2022

Multi-Stage Multi-Market Optimal Bidding Strategy In Electricity Markets, Hossein Mehdipourpicha

Doctoral Dissertations

"Restructuring of power industry created the competitive situations for different MPs through designing appropriate electricity markets. Typically, in pool-based electricity markets, MPs submit their offers, and ISO clears the market and notifies MPs of the cleared power amounts and market prices. In this situation, designing an effective bidding strategy for MPs who seek to maximize their profits has thus become one of the crucial yet difficult tasks that still need further exploration. The majority of recent studies overlooked this problem for the purely financial players. Therefore, designing an efficient strategy for virtual bidder in the pool-based electricity markets is studied …

The Effect Of Mass Transport On Deposit Quality In Copper Electrowinning, Joseph Bauer Jan 2022

The Effect Of Mass Transport On Deposit Quality In Copper Electrowinning, Joseph Bauer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Roughness and nodulation of copper electrodeposits depend strongly on mass transfer conditions of copper ions to the electrode surface. Mass transfer properties in electrowinning electrolytes were first characterized. The effective diffusivity of cupric ion was measured with a rotating disk electrode in CuSO4-H2SO4 electrolytes at temperatures relevant to electrowinning, with and without additives. Adding 20 mg L-1 of chloride ion increased the measured diffusion coefficient, but commercial smoothing additives had little effect. An empirical formula to predict cupric diffusivity was generated for later use in mass transport modeling.

Boundary layer thickness information for commercial …

Far-End Crosstalk Modeling And Prediction For High-Speed Pcb Design With Inhomogeneous Dielectric Layers (Idls), Yuanzhuo Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Far-end crosstalk (FEXT) noise is a critical factor that affects signal integrity performance in high-speed systems. The FEXT level is sensitive to the inhomogeneity of the dielectric layers in fabricated printed circuit boards (PCB). The stripline is laminated by multiple inhomogeneous dielectric layers (IDL). The dielectric layers of the stripline are laminated with epoxy resin and glass bundles. The dielectric permittivity of the epoxy resin and glass bundles are different, which causes the inhomogeneity of the dielectric layers while also increasing the FEXT magnitude. The dielectric of the microstrip in printed circuit boards (PCB) fabrication usually consists of two layers: …

Mobility Analysis And Topology Synthesis Of Compliant Mechanism Using Compliance Number And Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (Prbm), Pratheek Bagivalu Prasanna

Doctoral Dissertations

"Establishing and understanding the kinematic properties of a compliant mechanism has been a relatively recent endeavor and has proved to be a challenging task. A concept of compliance number was offered earlier; the development of terminologies was emphasized that aided in its determination. It also hypothesized that the compliance number (C) and stored strain energy, or mode shapes, are strongly correlated. This compliance number (C) concept is revisited, and a more lucid interpretation of its significance is provided. A fundamental understanding of the concept of deformation mode shapes in compliant mechanisms is formalized using two distinct categories: (i) segmental and …

Lateral Torsional Buckling Resistance Of Continuous Steel Stringers In Existing Bridges, Dinesha Malky Kuruppuarachchi Kuruppuarachchi Appuhamilage Don May 2021

Lateral Torsional Buckling Resistance Of Continuous Steel Stringers In Existing Bridges, Dinesha Malky Kuruppuarachchi Kuruppuarachchi Appuhamilage Don

Doctoral Dissertations

Some of the Louisiana’s bridges built in the 1950s and 1960s used two-girder or truss systems, in which floorbeams are carried by main members and the continuous (spliced) stringers are supported by the floorbeams. The main members are either two edge (fascia) girders or trusses. When the flexural capacity of continuous stringers is calculated, the moment gradient factor (Cb) is not accurately calculated considering the lateral torsional buckling (LTB) at the negative moment section. In particular, the bracing effect of the non-composite concrete deck is not accounted for, and as a result, the current practice has underestimated the LTB strength …
