A Modified Approach To Flood Prediction In Urban Watersheds, Joseph Ofungwu
A Modified Approach To Flood Prediction In Urban Watersheds, Joseph Ofungwu
Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a better method for dealing with the problems of flood prediction in Urban Watersheds. It has long been realized that urbanization activity such as increased imperviousness, drainage improvements, etc. increases runoff volumes. Therefore, traditional flood prediction methods using the Log Pearson III distribution underestimate flood frequencies when applied to urban watersheds without modification.
In attempt to compensate for the effects of urbanization on streamflow, previous workers usually employed regional analysis techniques involving a number of different watersheds at various degrees of urbanization. Results obtained by this approach leave room for improvement primarily …

Process Technology And Characterization For Field Emission Devices, Jong Min Kim
Dissertations
Vacuum microelectronics is a new research field which applies semiconductor process technology to the fabrication of micron-dimensioned electron devices. Vacuum microelectronics is made possible by advances in microstructures and nanofabrication technology. Vacuum microelectronic devices are further characterized by a wide operating temperature range, nuclear radiation immunity, higher emission current density potential, and lower power consumption than that of thermionic emitters. The low mass of the electron provides a higher carrier mobility than GaAs or any solid state device. These features offer the potentials for wide variety of applications.
In this dissertation. electron field emission structures applicable to a variety of …

Investigation Of Epitaxial Lift-Off Gaas And Langmuir-Blodgett Films For Optoelectronic Device Applications, Divyang M. Shah
Dissertations
Epitaxial lift-off (ELO), a technique of removing an epitaxially grown GaAs layer from its growth substrate by selective etching of an AlAs sacrificial layer, is described for field-effect transistor fabrication independent of the GaAs growth substrate. Metal Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MESFETs) and High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) fabricated on silicon and sapphire substrates using ELO are investigated. A 0.1 μm gate length depletion mode MESFET made on silicon exhibited a unity current gain frequency ft = 34 GHz. Excellent device isolation with subpicoampere leakage currents is obtained. A high input impedance amplifier has been implemented on silicon substrate using …

I: Mass Transfer of Benzene and Chlorobenzene in Soil Matrices
Experimental measurements on several apparatus were used in conjunction with chromatographic theory to study the thermal adsorption and desorption of organic vapors on soil with different particle sizes for analysis mass transfer parameters and heat of adsorption. Benzene (C6H6) and chlorobenzene (C6H5Cl) were tested on soil with 0.55, 0.46, 0.36, and 0.225 mm average particle sizes. Sample injection volumes for organic compounds were studied to ensure linearity of gas chromatography. Equilibrium constants were strongly dependent on temperature but not on particle size. …
Improving The Throughput Of Plasticating Extruders : Manufacture Of Non-Circular Pellets, Measurement Of Their Interparticulate Friction Coefficient, And Implications For Screw Design, Chia-Ying Liu
Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the hypothesis that the interparticulate friction coefficient of a bed of polymeric particulates is a function of the cross-section of the pellets. Most pellets have a circular cross-section especially those that are strand cut. But when such pellets constitute a particulate bed there are few restrictions to adjacent pellets turning with respect to each other, or of the beds rupturing under shear load. This rupture can occur in plasticating extrusion, and it results in a poorly mixed melt with an inhomogeneous temperature distribution. The temperature fluctuations cause viscosity fluctuations which in turn cause pressure fluctuations. The pressure …
Behavior Of Square And L-Shaped Slender Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Axial Compression, Wen Hu Tsao
Dissertations
A numerical analysis was developed to evaluate the complete load-deflection and moment-curvature relationships for square and L-shaped slender reinforced concrete columns subjected to biaxial bending and axial load. This computer model can be used for any cross section geometry and material properties of normal concrete. The analysis was based on a deformation control and both the ascending and descending branches of curves can be studied. The finite difference method was introduced to calculate the deflections which satisfy the compatibility equations. Six square slender columns and eight L-shaped slender columns were tested to compare their experimental load-deformation results with the analytical …
A Generalized, Parametric Pr-Qmf/Wavelet Transform Design Approach For Multiresolution Signal Decomposition, Hakan Caglar
A Generalized, Parametric Pr-Qmf/Wavelet Transform Design Approach For Multiresolution Signal Decomposition, Hakan Caglar
Dissertations
This dissertation aims to emphasize the interrelations and the linkages of the theories of discrete-time filter banks and wavelet transforms. It is shown that the Binomial-QMF banks are identical to the interscale coefficients or filters of the compactly supported orthonormal wavelet transform bases proposed by Daubechies.
A generalized, parametric, smooth 2-band PR-QMF design approach based on Bernstein polynomial approximation is developed. It is found that the most regular compact support orthonormal wavelet filters, coiflet filters are only the special cases of the proposed filter bank design technique.
A new objective performance measure called Non-aliasing Energy Ratio(NER) is developed. Its merits …
Integrated Anaerobic-Aerobic System For The Biodegradation Of Highly Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Cheng-Ming Kung
Integrated Anaerobic-Aerobic System For The Biodegradation Of Highly Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Cheng-Ming Kung
Dissertations
A two-step process was developed for the complete mineralization of hazardous chlorinated aromatic compounds. The system consisted of an anaerobic reactor, in which reductive dehalogenation took place, coupled with an aerobic reactor in which the complete mineralization of the products of the anaerobic dehalogenation occurred.
A mixed anaerobic culture from a municipal sewage treatment plant was enriched and then immobilized on silica-based porous beads to treat 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), which is the model target compound in this work. In the anaerobic reactor, TCP was degraded to 2,4-dichlorophenol which was, in turn, reduced to 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). Stoichiometric amounts of 4-CP were recovered …
Crystallization Kinetics And Polyblends Of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Recycled From Post-Consumer Beverage Bottles, Peming Peter Hsu
Crystallization Kinetics And Polyblends Of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Recycled From Post-Consumer Beverage Bottles, Peming Peter Hsu
Dissertations
In order to reduce waste generation, and comply with state and federal laws, plastic beverage bottles are usually undergoing recycling. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) [PET], which is the main component the bottles are made of, cannot be used for manufacturing new food containers, and has to be used for manufacturing other end consumer products. The recycled PET is a cheap material, but its use is problematic due to the low crystallization rates of PET. The present study investigates ways of accelerating PET crystallization by using inorganic carbonate salts as nucleating agents. This study also explores the possibility of forming polymer blends based …

Mathematical Modeling Of Mass Transfer In Microvascular Wall And Interstitial Space, Daekyung Kim
Dissertations
The dynamics of macromolecular transport across the microvascular wall and into the adjoining interstitial space was studied in the hamster cheek pouch using intravital fluorescence microscopy in combination with digital image processing. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labe led dextrans (FITC-Dx) of 70,000 and 150,000 daltons were used as tracers. In each experiment, the time-dependent extravasation of FITC-Dx from a leakage site in a blood vessel was videotaped for about 2 hours. The macromolecular transport from individual microvessels was quantified by digital video-image processing. Histograms of the light intensity distributions for selected fields at various times were obtained and then converted to the interstitial …
The Theory Of Bootstrapped Algorithms And Their Applications To Cross Polarization Interference Cancelation, Abdulkadir Dinc
The Theory Of Bootstrapped Algorithms And Their Applications To Cross Polarization Interference Cancelation, Abdulkadir Dinc
Dissertations
Dual-polarized transmission has become an important method for frequency re-use, particularly in satellite and microwave radio communication. Nevertheless, cross-polarization interference, which is inherent to this method, may cause degradation in system performance.
Different canceler [sic] structures have been proposed to mitigate the effect of cross-polarization. Among these are the diagonalizer, the least mean square (LMS) canceler [sic] and the bootstrapped cancelers [sic]. Bootstrapped canceler [sic] schemes have been proposed and implemented in different applications, such as satellites, tactical communications, and quadrature amplitude madulation [sic] (QAM) dual polarized microwave radio. Nevertheless, no attempt was made in the past to quantify the …
Mathematical Modeling Of Chemical Vapor Deposition Processes And Its Application To Thin Film Technology, Norman W. Loney
Mathematical Modeling Of Chemical Vapor Deposition Processes And Its Application To Thin Film Technology, Norman W. Loney
Dissertations
A number of workers in the field of Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have presented mathematical models in the literature. Some workers were able to produce analytical expressions for the interwafer concentration profile. These analytical expressions were based entirely on zero or first order chemical reaction rates. Until now, it appears that a chemical reaction rate expression that is not zero or first order directly, must be handled by a numerical scheme.
Presented herein is a mathematical model with an analytical interwafer concentration profile. This concentration profile is neither zero nor first order but shifts from zero to first order as …
Investigation Of Stagnation Flow Heat Transfer For A Heated Horizontal Round Plate, Ching-Hua Wei
Investigation Of Stagnation Flow Heat Transfer For A Heated Horizontal Round Plate, Ching-Hua Wei
Dissertations
The heat transfer characteristics in stagnation flow are investigated through three cases in this study. The first is forced convection by an array of air jets; the second is free convection of a downward-facing heated round plate; the third is free convection of an upward-facing heated round plate.
The first case is investigated by systematic experiments which examine the heat transfer characteristics mainly by five air jets impinging normally to a flat plate, with varying nozzle diameters, and Reynolds numbers, at different distances between the nozzles and the plate. The empirical formulas of heat transfer around the stagnation point and …

A Combined Gel Entrapped And Membrane Attached Microbial Process For Biodegrading Organic Compounds, Fayaz Saifuddin Lakhwala
Dissertations
A comparative study has been performed between two bioreactors treating phenol, one using calcium alginate entrapped microorganisms, and the other using microorganisms attached on the surface of a polymeric membrane. Laboratory experiments conducted in batch recirculation mode, as well as a continuous feed mode, showed that the calcium alginate bio-bead reactor is more efficient in treating high feed concentrations of phenol, while the membrane bioreactor is more effective in the lower concentration regime (less than 150 ppm). In batch recirculation mode, the reaction rates (expressed as mg phenol/hr*gm dry cells) in the membrane reactor are an order of magnitude higher …
Thermodynamics Of Strong Electrolyte Solutions : Prediction Of Osmotic Coefficients By Pair Correlation Function Method, One Kwon Rim
Thermodynamics Of Strong Electrolyte Solutions : Prediction Of Osmotic Coefficients By Pair Correlation Function Method, One Kwon Rim
Dissertations
Thermodynamic properties (osmotic coefficients) of strong electrolyte solutions have been studied by the method of statistical mechanics. First the charged soft sphere potential is developed based on the Pauling type model. Next the charged soft sphere potential is converted to the thermodynamically corresponding charged hard sphere potential by way of the perturbation method developed by Verlet and Weis. Simultaneously, the radial distribution function is developed by modification of the Exponential theory through introduction of the Stillinger-Lovett moment condition. The effective hard sphere diameter values calculated by the perturbation method are combined with the modified Exponential theory, and these quantities are …
On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of A Sphere-Nozzle Connection, Ban-Li Lyow
On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of A Sphere-Nozzle Connection, Ban-Li Lyow
Dissertations
This dissertation studies the local stresses and spring constants of a spherical shell with a nozzle attachment when it is under various loadings, namely radial force, overturning moment, horizontal shear force, and torsional moment. Because of the mathematical difficulty in modeling the nozzle-sphere configuration, particularly with nozzle opening, the finite element method (ANSYS package) is utilized in this study. The model used in this study is a quadrilateral thin shell element model when the γs (spherical radius/thickness) value is larger than 10. Otherwise the isoparametric solid element is used. The resulting stresses are basically biaxial state of stresses. It …

On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of Pipe-Nozzle Connection, Hson-Chih Sun
Dissertations
This thesis presents a comprehensive study of local stresses and spring coefficients of pipe with a nozzle connection, analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). Six types of loading are discussed: radial force, circumferential moment, longitudinal moment, circumferential shear force, longitudinal shear force, and torsional moment.
For the local stresses, the bending and membrane stress factors due to each of these loadings are presented in a series of plots with various gamma (piping radius/thick-ness) and beta (nozzle radius/pipe radius) values. These stress factors will readily replace those previously published in WRC No. 107. This work not only gives more accurate …

On The Performance Of Minimum Redundancy Array For Multisource Direction Finding, Byung-Seub Lee
Dissertations
As an application of power spectrum estimation, the multi-source direction finding has been evolved from conventional FFT method to Superresolution methods such as Multiple Signal Classification(MUSIC) algorithm. Uniform Regular Array(URA) was mainly used in all these approaches.
The Minimum Redundancy array(MRA); a non-uniform thinned array which results in an input signals covariance matrix with minimum redundancy has been shown to have certain interesting properties for spectrum estimation. Only recently it was suggested to use the MRA for spatial estimation. The purpose of this research was to study the performance of this array in multi-source direction finding estimation and compare it …

Indirect means have to be employed for their description and exploration due to the unclear internal nature of the system. This study analyzed and developed several possible mathematical models using single or multidimensional nonlinear differential equations to approach the experimental circadian data. The numerical solutions of the models were obtained by computer simulation and the simulated and experimental acquired circadian data were analyzed in both the time and frequency domains. Phase plane plots, phase response curves and power spectrum analysis were employed to determine the nonlinearity of the system …
Mass Transfer Of Hazardous Organic Compounds In Soil Matrices Relevant To Thermal Desorption/Incineration, Jong-In Dong
Mass Transfer Of Hazardous Organic Compounds In Soil Matrices Relevant To Thermal Desorption/Incineration, Jong-In Dong
Dissertations
Soils contaminated with hazardous organic compounds have been known to threaten human health both directly through various contact mechanisms and indirectly through leaching or transfer to the food chain. Thermal desorption of contaminated soil matrices with secondary treatment of the effluent gases (collection, incineration, etc) is one of most feasible and developing technologies for cleaning of contaminated soils. There is, however, little known about the mass transfer principles of organic contaminants through the heated soil matrices. The objectives of this study is, therefore, to learn and understand details of the mass transfer processes of organic compounds in these soil matrices. …

Correlation Between Particle Velocities And Conditions Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Wei-Long Chen
Correlation Between Particle Velocities And Conditions Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Wei-Long Chen
Dissertations
The velocities of water and abrasive particles in abrasive waterjet(AWJ) were measured by the use of Laser Transit Anemometer(LTA). A setup for the velocity measurement was constructed and a statistical technique was used to improve the accuracy of the velocity determination. A comparison of the magnitude of velocities determined by LTA, Piezoelectric Force Transducer and Schlieren Photograph clearly indicates the feasibility of the use of LTA.
The velocities of water and particles were measured for different diameters of water and slurry nozzles, abrasive mass flow rates and particle sizes. The performed experiments enabled us to evaluate the effects of conditions …
Propagation Of Millimeter Wave Signals In Forests Using The Equation Of Radiative Transfer With Strong Forward Scattering Phase Functions, Nack Yang Cho
Dissertations
A forest is a highly scattering medium at millimeter wave frequencies. The propagation of cw millimeter wave signals in forests has been studied previously, both theoretically and experimentally. Published experimental data verified that continuous wave transmission is possible over lengths of the order of a few hundred meters and that a forest acts to strongly scatter energy in the forward direction. The cw studies yielded the determination of the range dependence, beam broadening effects and depolarization effects of millimeter wave signals in a forest. However, pulse broadening effects, which are of importance particularly in the case of digital signal transmission, …
Protein Separation With Mathematical Modeling For Chromatographic Operation, Hsien-Chih Ma
Protein Separation With Mathematical Modeling For Chromatographic Operation, Hsien-Chih Ma
Dissertations
We have performed experiments and derived mathematical models for packed bed columns used for liquid phase chromatographic separations of proteins with impulse input of feed solutions. These models can now be used to describe the relationships between the elution characteristics (peak height, peak position, and shapes) and the operating conditions (flow rate and buffer conditions) of ion exchange and gel permeation column chromatography for protein separations.
The surface adsorption model was discussed relative to the nature of the mobile and stationary phases in ion exchange column chromatography for two distinct cases: with and without pore diffusion. For large solute molecules, …

Biodegradation Of Benzene And A Btx Mixture Using Immobilized Activated Sludge, Mayur Padamshi Lodaya
Dissertations
Aerobic biodegradation of benzene was studied using activated sludge immobilized in calcium alginate (immobilization by entrapment), and also attached to a silica based catalyst.support (immobilization by attachment). Hydrogen peroxide was used as a source of dissolved oxygen to eliminate physical removal of benzene due to aeration. Abiotic losses of benzene were accounted for.
A recirculation reactor, run in both batch and continuous feed mode, was used to determine the kinetic parameters. The system response was examined by tollowing changes in benzene concentration, flow rate, and biomass loading. The system was modeled mathematically and the kinetic parameters were determined.
Biological removal …
Bond And Fatigue Characteristics Of High-Strength Cement-Based Composites, Somboon Chimaphant
Bond And Fatigue Characteristics Of High-Strength Cement-Based Composites, Somboon Chimaphant
Dissertations
The results of a series of tests on a variety of high strength cementitious composites yield a model from which an empirical equation of general normalized pull-out stress vs. pull-out displacement relationship is developed. A new variable named the "Brittleness Index" is defined and used in the proposed equation. Additionally, the concept of maximum strain is used to predict the fatigue life of high strength concrete.
Three sizes of deformed bars and two types of steel fibers with four different volume fractions were used to observe bond-slip and pull-out characteristics of high strength concrete. The results indicate that the maximum …

Kinematic Synthesis Of Mechanisms For Multiply Separated Positions, Hyoung Jun Kim
Dissertations
The rigid body motion is studied in a combination of finitely and infinitesimally separated positions in planar, spherical, and spatial kinematics. A general new method for determining the locations of points and/or lines in a rigid body moving through finitely and infinitesimally separated positions is developed. These points and/or lines would satisfy the constraints of various types of binary links for planar, spherical, and spatial mechanisms.
A unified form of circle-point curve equation is derived for finitely and multiply separated position problems in planar and spherical motions. A graphical method to construct the circle-point and center-point curves and Ball point …
Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene With The Addition Of Sugar Using Activated Carbon-Fluidized Beds, Suxan Huang
Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene With The Addition Of Sugar Using Activated Carbon-Fluidized Beds, Suxan Huang
Dissertations
Anaerobic biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) was carried out in a two-stage granular activated carbon fluidized bed bioreactor. The intermediate products were identified as: dichloroethylene (DCE), vinyl chloride (VC), 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA) and chloroethane (CA). Of the three geometric isomers of DCE, the trans-1,2 dichloroethylene (TDCE) was found to be the most predominant species, The production of DCA suggested a diverted reaction sequence from the conventional sequential reductive dechlorination pathway postulated in the past literature. CA was believed to be a product of VC and/or DCA. The co-substrate glucose was implicated for this reaction specificity. Based on our data and on other's …
