WashU Racing needs a device that will help them transport their Formula SAE car to and from their garage/paddock during events and testing when the car is unable to move under its own power. Pushing the car is very exhausting and requires at least 2 pairs of people, rotating in and out, to push the car. An electronically assisted push bar would only require two people to push the car and wouldn't experience exhaustion due to pushing the car. This device will function similarly to a shopping cart tug while also functioning as a rear jack for the vehicle that …

Pan-Cancer Analysis Of Rna Dysregulation, Somatic Mutations, And Matrix Stiffness Using Bioinformatics Approaches, Gongyu Tang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Cancer is a complex disease driven by genetic mutations, epigenetic modifications, and alterations in the tumor microenvironment. Understanding these intricate molecular mechanisms is crucial for advancing cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has emerged as a powerful tool to study cancer by providing comprehensive insights into gene expression, alternative splicing, and mutations at the transcriptome level. This dissertation leverages RNA-seq data to explore different dimensions of cancer biology through multi-omics integration and computational approaches. The research is divided into three main projects. First, I developed OncoDB, an interactive database to analyze gene expression, methylation patterns, and viral interactions …

Design, Build, Fly (DBF) is a student-run engineering team at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) that designs aircraft for flight competitions. Before assembling the final product, DBF runs numerous simulations on prototypes to understand the effects of drag and lift on the designed shape. The lift and drag parameters are important to aircraft design, as DBF hopes to optimize flight performance during competitions. However, simulations require computational power, are theoretical at best, and may inaccurately represent real-life situations. Preferably, DBF can use physical testing that captures prototype performance with more qualitative details.
Senior Design Group Z approaches DBF's needs …

A Computational And Mathematical Approach To The Preclinical Development Of Alpha Emitting Radiopharmaceutical Therapies, Abdulaziz Said
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Numerous candidate nuclides have been undergoing rigorous preclinical development in the pursuit of novel targeted therapies. Successful development of these drugs relies on the understanding of physiological impacts at the macro and micro scales, in addition to a scalable process for their production. Here, mathematical and computerized approaches have been developed to guide this preclinical development. In this report, two alpha emitting nuclides Pb-212 and Ra-223 are modeled. Radium-223 dichloride citrate a newly approved ion indicated for treatment of bone metastatic castrate resistant prostate cancer, irradiates lesions through targeted uptake in bone at sites of disease. We have undertaken the …

Safety And Optimality Monitors For Learning-Enabled Systems Using Conformal Prediction, Jackson Cox
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The use of machine learning to create data-driven plant models and controllers has led to an increased need for safety and optimality monitors for model-based systems. System plant models are subject to uncertainty due to learning constraints such as unseen data and overfitting or physical constraints such as unknown dynamics and noise. This uncertainty is detrimental to safety-critical systems and must be properly regulated. To curb this uncertainty, we create prediction sets using the guarantees provided by Conformal Prediction. With a user-specified high probability, these prediction sets contain the true plant system states for an entire prediction horizon, which we …
Modeling The Performance And Resource Requirements For Gamma-Ray Telescope Signal Processing, Shijing Liang
Modeling The Performance And Resource Requirements For Gamma-Ray Telescope Signal Processing, Shijing Liang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the buffering requirements of the data pipeline for the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope gamma-ray telescope. Given the importance and stochastic arrivals of astronomical signals, it is crucial to ensure that each gamma-ray signal is fully buffered to prevent data loss. To achieve this, FIFOs are inserted into the data processing pipeline to prevent bottlenecks during data packet processing. Buffers play a critical role in regulating data flow, preventing data loss, and ensuring efficient data processing. They act as temporary storage areas, absorbing data surges and releasing it steadily, thus maintaining the pipeline’s optimal performance. In general, buffer integration …
Direct Methanol Fuel Cells Using Pure Methanol, Ryan Spragg
Direct Methanol Fuel Cells Using Pure Methanol, Ryan Spragg
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Fuel cell technology has attained significant appeal as a form of renewable energy in recent years due to its diverse applications, various fuel types, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Of the various fuel cell types, direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) hold a set of distinct advantages for stationary and small portable applications. These advantages include faster refueling compared to battery charging, high gravimetric energy density, and ease of production and use compared to hydrogen. However, the DMFC has numerous technical hurdles that prevent its widespread adoption into the commercial market. Namely, the slow reaction kinetics in the anode and the …

The goal of this project is to design and construct a device that allows for the controlled study of mosquito egg-laying behavior in response to artificial light and temperature variations. Specifically, the device will limit access to cups of standing water, which serve as egg-laying sites, to preprogrammed times of day over a 7-day period.
The device should ensure the following:
- Control Access: The container should be open and closed at predetermined intervals, allowing mosquitoes to access the cups of standing water only during these times.
- Programmability: It should be easy for a novice to specify the opening and closing …

The ASME Student Design Competition focused on the design and construction of a ball bearing sorter. This ball bearing sorter must be capable of sorting 2 sizes of ball bearings, being 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch. For each size, there are 3 different bearing materials, brass, steel, and acetal plastic. The device is intended to have the bearings fed into a hopper, and then fully autonomously sort the bearings. The autonomous sorting was to transport the various bearings into 6 different packing stations, one for each size and material bearing. These packing stations must be easily removable. This design project …

Our project is about designing a goniometer that will aid Rachel Apter, an occupational therapy graduate student, more easily determine the angles created by limbs bending about a joint. A goniometer is essentially a protractor designed to affix its base arm to a stationary limb and it’s rotating arm to a moving limb. The moving arm follows the moving limb, measuring the coupled limb’s range of motion. The main complaint centering around goniometers is that they are hard to read due to the small tick marks that indicate the angle. To fix this problem, the goniometer will be edited to …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
In many research and medical settings, small amounts of liquids are dispensed using syringes. Very often, syringe pumps like those shown in the left image, are used to control the amount (i.e., flow rate) of dispensed/collected fluid. There are single- or multi-style syringe pumps; the one shown is single-style; multi-style have 2-8 parallel syringes that are all pushed/pulled at the same flow rate. However, these syringe
pumps are bulky and heavy, making them impractical for many experimental setups. Commercial alternatives include very expensive syringe pumps with remote dispensers. Furthermore, it is often necessary to have two syringe pumps operate in …

Washington University in St. Louis’ Design/Build/Fly team (WashU DBF) participates in an annual international competition with over 100 teams where they create a Remote Control (RC) plane that can perform various missions. One of the difficulties in developing a plane each year is testing the forces on the plane. Currently, Ansys and XFLR5 are used to create computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for the plane. CFD modeling simulates air flow over the plane’s wings to analyze how to optimize the aircraft’s aerodynamics. While this is a useful strategy to predict the plane’s theoretical performance, WashU DBF Technical President, Eleni Kambouris, …
