Autonomous Control Strategy For Microgrid Operating Modes Smooth Transition, Yaran Li, Long Fu, Ke Meng, Zhao Dong, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Wenli Du

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2013 IEEE. Microgrid transition between standalone and grid-connected modes is a promising alternative to provide the grid with increasing flexibility and availability. However, transition smoothness relies heavily on control topologies and corresponding parameters, which thus remains challengeable. Existing microgrid transition strategies have two major deficiencies: 1) Inverter control mode alters subjected to microgrid operating mode, for instance, the inverter in current control will switch to voltage control when microgrid disconnects to the utility grid; 2) Controller parameters are selected based on practice and experience, where a systematic and efficient approach does not exist. Motivated by these limitations, in this …

A 3d Printed Modular Soft Gripper For Conformal Grasping, Charbel Tawk, Rahim Mutlu, Gursel Alici

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020 IEEE. In this work, a 3D printed modular soft gripper with highly conformal soft fingers was developed. A soft auxetic structure with compliant ribs is 3D printed simultaneously with each soft pneumatic finger for conformal grasping. The fingers of the soft gripper were printed monolithically, without requiring support material and postprocessing, using a low-cost and open-source fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer that employs a commercially available thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The soft fingers of the gripper were optimized using finite element modeling (FEM). The FE simulations accurately predicted the performance of the fingers in terms of deformation and …

Beyond Covariance: Sice And Kernel Based Visual Feature Representation, Jianjia Zhang, Lei Wang, Luping Zhou, Wanqing Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature. The past several years have witnessed increasing research interest on covariance-based feature representation. Originally proposed as a region descriptor, it has now been used as a general representation in various recognition tasks, demonstrating promising performance. However, covariance matrix has some inherent shortcomings such as singularity in the case of small sample, limited capability in modeling complicated feature relationship, and a single, fixed form of representation. To achieve better recognition performance, this paper argues that more capable and flexible symmetric positive definite (SPD)-matrix-based representation shall be explored, and this is attempted …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Ti-6Al-4 V alloy is a well-acknowledged standard material for the application of modern aerospace, surgical equipment, and prosthetic body parts owing to its stable thermo-physical properties at elevated temperature. However, this structure stability imparts its low thermal conductivity that leads to buildup of heat at tool-workpiece interface during machining which subsequently has a damaging effect on the tool cutting edge. Several biodegradable cutting fluids have already been attempted controlling the heat generation, environmental footprints to improve the overall machinability. In this endeavor, the effectiveness of dry, liquid nitrogen (LN2) and hybrid cryogenic and minimum quantity lubrication …

Multi-Period Data Driven Control Strategy For Real-Time Management Of Energy Storages In Virtual Power Plants Integrated With Power Grid, Chixin Xiao, Danny Sutanto, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Minjie Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2019 Elsevier Ltd This paper investigates a novel real-time stochastic multi-period management strategy of a virtual power plant (VPP) using a three-layer language protocol based on computer program compiler principle, which takes advantage of the availability of the battery storage in a VPP to maximize the revenue of the VPP over the entire trading horizon considering the predicted prices in each slice of that horizon. When the conventional scenario tree method is used to solve the computational complexity of the multi-period stochastic optimization problem, it may cause the problem to become intractable when the problem-scale increases. This paper proposes a …

In England, there is a longstanding and increasing undersupply of both affordable and open-market housing. Around three quarters of all new homes in the UK are currently built speculatively by the developer-led private housing sector. However, demand for self-build housing is growing. Concurrently, there is also a need to address the sustainability of homes, which represent 29% of final energy consumption in the UK. There is a clear imperative to develop business models within the construction sector in which both social and environmental sustainability are inherent. The aim of this paper is to explore professional and expert opinions on the …

A Semi-Analytic Valuation Of American Options Under A Two-State Regime-Switching Economy, Xiaoping Lu, Endah Putri Jan 2020

A Semi-Analytic Valuation Of American Options Under A Two-State Regime-Switching Economy, Xiaoping Lu, Endah Putri

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this study, we develop a semi-analytic method to evaluate American options under a two-state regime-switching economy. The two free boundaries corresponding to the states divide the pricing domain into two regions: a common continuation region and a transition region. Non-linear partial differential equation (PDE) systems are derived under the Black-Scholes framework for each region. The Laplace transform method is used to solve the PDE systems. Equations for determining the optimal exercise prices are obtained analytically and solved numerically in the Laplace space. A numerical inversion technique is then used to obtain the free boundaries and the option prices in …

Compressive Behaviour Of Slender Frp-Confined Concrete-Encased Cross-Shaped Steel Columns, Le Huang, Tao Yu, Zhen-Yu Wang, Shi-Shun Zhang Jan 2020

Compressive Behaviour Of Slender Frp-Confined Concrete-Encased Cross-Shaped Steel Columns, Le Huang, Tao Yu, Zhen-Yu Wang, Shi-Shun Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined concrete-encased cross-shaped steel columns (FCCSCs) consist of a square FRP outer tube with round corners, a cross-shaped inner steel section and concrete filled in the between. The unique configuration of FCCSCs ensures that the concrete in the columns is well confined despite the square column shape, as demonstrated by the relevant existing research. The existing work on FCCSCs, however, has been limited to the behavior of short FCCSCs under axial compression. With their optimal configuration, the use of FCCSCs means that considerably reduced section dimensions may be adopted for the same load demand, leading to relatively slender …

Circular Hybrid Double-Skin Tubular Columns With A Stiffener-Reinforced Steel Inner Tube And A Large-Rupture-Strain Frp Outer Tube: Compressive Behavior, Le Huang, S S. Zhang, Tao Yu, K Peng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A typical fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-concrete-steel double-skin tubular column (DSTC) consists of an FRP outer tube, a hollow steel inner tube and an annular concrete in-fill in between. The existing studies on DSTCs in the past decade have generally confirmed the good structural performance of such column form, while it is worth noting that the possible in-ward buckling of the steel tubes in DSTCs is still a problem to be addressed, especially when DSTCs are subjected to large axial deformation. Against this background, a variation form of DSTCs called R-DSTCs has been recently developed by the authors. An R-DSTC is a …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The applications of tissue engineered constructs have witnessed great advances in the last few years, as advanced fabrication techniques have enabled promising approaches to develop structures and devices for biomedical uses. (Bio-)printing, including both plain material and cell/material printing, offers remarkable advantages and versatility to produce multilateral and cell-laden tissue constructs; however, it has often revealed to be insufficient to fulfill clinical needs. Indeed, three-dimensional (3D) (bio-)printing does not provide one critical element, fundamental to mimic native live tissues, i.e., the ability to change shape/properties with time to respond to microenvironmental stimuli in a personalized manner. This capability is in …

Hygrothermal Performance Of Metal Wall Cladding Systems: Phase 1 Final Report, Alan Green, Paul Cooper Jan 2020

Hygrothermal Performance Of Metal Wall Cladding Systems: Phase 1 Final Report, Alan Green, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A series of experiments and simulations have been conducted to investigate how natural (i.e. buoyancy and wind-driven) ventilation through cavities formed behind steel cladding can influence the thermal and hygric (i.e. moisture-related) performance of walls in Australia. Changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) in 2019 introduced requirements for the thermal resistance of cavities to be calculated using methods outlined in the new standard AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. These calculation methods reduce the nominal thermal resistance of such cavities significantly when they include openings for ventilation between the cavity and the outdoor air (Figure 1).

Novel Integrated Strategies Toward Efficient And Stable Unassisted Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Liqun Wang, Wenping Si, Xinggang Hou, Mingxia Wang, Xiaoli Liu, Yuhang Ye, Feng Hou, Ji Liang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

© 2020 Unassisted photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for hydrogen evolution has been regarded as a sustainable route for the harvest and utilization of solar energy. To achieve such unassisted PEC water splitting, two novel integrated strategies have been developed: to design tandem structures of photoanodes/photocathodes and to construct hybrid devices of solar/PEC cells. Some key unsolved problems, however, still limit the further development of high-performance unassisted PEC water splitting, such as low efficiency, poor stability, and high cost. Herein, we present a brief summary of the latest development in this area and propose perspectives for further enhancing this state-of-the-art solar-to‑hydrogen …

Choosing Subfields For Luov And Lifting Fields For Rainbow, Dung Hoang Duong, Le Van Luyen, Ha Tran

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2019 Multivariate public key cryptography is one of the main candidates for post-quantum cryptography. Rainbow, an improved (multi-layer) version of unbalanced oil and vinegar (UOV), is one of the most famous multivariate signature schemes that is a promising candidate for NIST standardisation. At INDOCRYPT 2017, Beullens and Preneel introduced a new variant LUOV of UOV. Their idea is to generate a UOV scheme over the binary field L = F2 and then lift it into a bigger field K = F2r and hence dramatically reduce the public key size. In this study, the …

Susceptibility Artifact Correction For Sub-Millimeter Fmri Using Inverse Phase Encoding Registration And T1 Weighted Regularization, Soan Duong, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Harriet Boyd Taylor, A Puckett, Mark M. Schira

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) enables non-invasive examination of both the structure and the function of the human brain. The prevalence of high spatial-resolution (sub-millimeter) fMRI has triggered new research on the intra-cortex, such as cortical columns and cortical layers. At present, echo-planar imaging (EPI) is used exclusively to acquire fMRI data; however, susceptibility artifacts are unavoidable. These distortions are especially severe in high spatial-resolution images and can lead to misrepresentation of brain function in fMRI experiments. New method: This paper presents a new method for correcting susceptibility artifacts by combining a T1-weighted (T1w) image …

Transient Nonlinear Heat Transfer Analysis Using A Generic Grid Refinement For Structure Parameter Variations, S Feng, Y Tao, Zhenjun Ma, Grzegorz Krolczyk, Zhixiong Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2020 The Authors Traditional finite element models are usually established based on specific structures to address the transient nonlinear heat transfer analysis; however, if the structure parameters change one has to reanalyze/rebuild the finite element models, resulting in a lot of additional computational cost. To address this problem, this work develops a generic grid refinement approach to improve the computational efficiency of nonlinear heat transfer analysis. The advantage of the proposed method lies that the grids can be used to establish connections between original and modified structures through transfer operators, which is calculated only once for the original structures and …

© 2020 by the authors. This paper proposes a framework for unmixing of hyperspectral data that is based on utilizing the scattering transform to extract deep features that are then used within a neural network. Previous research has shown that using the scattering transform combined with a traditional K-nearest neighbors classifier (STFHU) is able to achieve more accurate unmixing results compared to a convolutional neural network (CNN) applied directly to the hyperspectral images. This paper further explores hyperspectral unmixing in limited training data scenarios, which are likely to occur in practical applications where the access to large amounts of labeled …
