An Experimental Investigation On Liquid Methane Convection And Boiling In Rocket Engine Cooling Channels, Abraham Trujillo
An Experimental Investigation On Liquid Methane Convection And Boiling In Rocket Engine Cooling Channels, Abraham Trujillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In the past decades, interest in developing hydrocarbon-fueled rocket engines for deep spaceflight missions has continued to grow. In particular, liquid methane (LCH4) has been of interest due to the weight efficiency, storage, and handling advantages it offers over several currently used propellants. Deep space exploration requires reusable, long life rocket engines. Due to the high temperatures reached during combustion, the life of an engine is significantly impacted by the cooling system's efficiency. Regenerative (regen) cooling is presented as a viable alternative to common cooling methods such as film and dump cooling since it provides improved engine efficiency. Due to …

This paper uses surface response and full factorial models as the first step in model development, and then uses actual historical plant data to create a …
The Interfacial Fracture Of Bonded Materials And Composites, Kai Zhao
The Interfacial Fracture Of Bonded Materials And Composites, Kai Zhao
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Adhesive bonding and composite materials have been widely used in manufacturing industry. Failure results from the weakest link in a structure and this is often the interface between two materials. In case of composites, it becomes the fiber and matrix interface. In case of bonded polymers, the bonding line is the interface. This Dissertation is focused on the interfacial fracture of bonded materials and composites. First, a systematic experimental investigation on adhesive bonding strengths of polymer/polymer and polymer/metal joints was conducted and the experimental results were compared with other researchers' work. Then, a modified short-beam shear approach is developed to …

Enhanced Finite Element Modeling Of The Thermo-Mechanical Responses Of Jointed Pcc Pavements Under Environmental And Traffic Loads, Mohammad Ali Zokaei Ashtiani
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP) are the most commonly used type of rigid pavement systems and the accurate modeling of their thermo-mechanical responses is of primary importance in a mechanistic-empirical pavement design procedure. In JPCP, the temperature gradient and resulting slab shape play a crucial role in the magnitude of stresses and deflections caused by the superimposed traffic loads. Temperature gradients through the slab depth can produce thermal curling in slabs and can also produce slab expansion and contraction, which leads to the generation of frictional tractions between slabs and foundation. The prediction of these frictional tractions is complicated by …
Frequency Selective Surfaces For Extreme Applications, Jay Houston Barton
Frequency Selective Surfaces For Extreme Applications, Jay Houston Barton
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
It is known that for high-power microwaves and other extreme environments, the use of resonant metallic elements in frequency selective surfaces can be problematic. The solution developed within this Dissertation to solve these problems was to use guided-mode resonance phenomenon to create all-dielectric frequency selective surfaces that could survive these extreme environments.
To fully understand how these devices work, three different computational electromagnetic methods are formulated and implemented. The formulation of these methods start with the differential form of Maxwellâ??s equation and are derived all the way down to the final simulation state. This is done sequentially and all the …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Spectral- and time-domain analysis of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) signal is widely used as a quantitative marker of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) activity. A robust algorithm was developed to derive HRV from photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals, to compute FFT- and AR-based spectra of these HRV signals, and to determine time- and frequency-domain features. This algorithm has detrending, sample-rate reductions, false-peak removal, automatic peak detection, peak-to-peak (P-P) interval detection and correction, time-domain feature extraction, HRV signal generation, and spectral-domain feature extraction from the HRV signal. Adapting to the very low spectral contents of the input PPG signal is very helpful in …
Imprecise Probabilities In Engineering Analyses, Michael Beer, Scott Ferson, Vladik Kreinovich
Imprecise Probabilities In Engineering Analyses, Michael Beer, Scott Ferson, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Probabilistic uncertainty and imprecision in structural parameters and in environmental conditions and loads are challenging phenomena in engineering analyses. They require appropriate mathematical modeling and quantification to obtain realistic results when predicting the behavior and reliability of engineering structures and systems. But the modeling and quantification is complicated by the characteristics of the available information, which involves, for example, sparse data, poor measurements and subjective information. This raises the question whether the available information is sufficient for probabilistic modeling or rather suggests a set-theoretical approach. The framework of imprecise probabilities provides a mathematical basis to deal with these problems which …

Reduced-Order Modeling Using Orthogonal And Bi-Orthogonal Wavelet Transforms, Miguel Hernandez Iv
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
It is well known that model reduction methods borrow techniques typically found in data compression, and current state-of-the-art techniques for data compression are based on the wavelet transform. Given these facts, it is surprising that model reduction using wavelets has not received much attention and has not been adequately addressed in the literature. This research seeks to determine if wavelets can be used for model reduction and if wavelet model reduction is a viable alternative to existing model reduction methods.
In this work we propose a novel method for model reduction using wavelets. Specifically, we introduce techniques for deriving wavelet …

Structural, Optical And Electrical Properties Of Yttrium-Doped Hafnium Oxide Nanocrystalline Thin Films, Abhilash Kongu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Hafnium oxide (HfO2) has emerged as the most promising high-k dielectric for Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (MOS) devices and has been highlighted as the most suitable dielectric materials to replace silicon oxide because of its comprehensive performance. In the present research, yttrium-doped HfO2 (YDH) thin films were fabricated using RF magnetron sputter deposition onto Si (100) and quartz with a variable thickness. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy coupled with Filmetrics revealed that film thickness values range from 700 A° to 7500 A°. Electrical properties such as AC Resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of YDH films were studied. YDH films that were relatively thin (<1500 A°) crystallized in monoclinic phase while thicker films crystallized in cubic phase. The band gap (Eg) of the films was calculated from the optical measurements. The band gap was found to be ∼5.60 eV for monoclinic while it is ∼6.05 eV for cubic phase of YDH films. Frequency dependence of the electrical resistivity (ρac) and the total conductivity of the films were measured. Resistivity decreased (by three orders of magnitude) with increasing frequency from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, attributed due to the hopping mechanism in YDH films. Whereas, while ρac∼1Ω-m at low frequencies (100 Hz), it decreased to ∼ 104 Ω-cm at higher frequencies (1 MHz). Aluminum (Al) metal electrodes were deposited to fabricate a thin film capacitor with YDH layer as dielectric film thereby employing Al-YDH-Si capacitor structure. The results indicate that the capacitance of the films decrease with increasing film thickness. A detailed analysis of the electrical characteristics of YDH films is presented.

It is now well established that radiating heat from the flame is a major contributor of the heat …
A Case Study Towards Verification Of The Utility Of Analytical Models In Selecting Checkpoint Intervals, Michael Joseph Harney
A Case Study Towards Verification Of The Utility Of Analytical Models In Selecting Checkpoint Intervals, Michael Joseph Harney
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As high performance computing (HPC) systems grow larger, with increasing numbers of components, failures become more common. Codes that utilize large numbers of nodes and run for long periods of time must take such failures into account and adopt fault tolerance mechanisms to avoid loss of computation and, thus, system utilization. One of those mechanisms is checkpoint/restart. Although analytical models exist to guide users in the selection of an appropriate checkpoint interval, these models are based on assumptions that may not always be true. This thesis examines some of these assumptions, in particular, the consistency of parameters like Mean Time …

Asynchronous Logic Design With Increased Fault Tolerance And Optimized For Subthreshold Operation, Ivan Santos
Asynchronous Logic Design With Increased Fault Tolerance And Optimized For Subthreshold Operation, Ivan Santos
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Synchronization has always been an essential feature in electronic circuits, in which functionality is achieved by an appropriate flow of data with respect to time. An ideal concept of logic design would require every operation to happen instantly; however, the application of this principle to electronics is governed by the laws of physics, which influence the time to execute a process. In fact, the speed at which a microprocessor can perform logic operations is determined by the time that charging and discharging capacitive loads requires, and the time that electric signals spend when traveling through the circuitry. Consequently, the variation …
