Study Of Conduction Behavior In Dielectrics In Chip Level Interconnects: Detection Of Defects In Al/Sio2 Interconnects, Po-Cheng Lu
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation presents four different electrical measurement techniques to detect structural defects in Al/SiO2 interconnects. These techniques, namely 1) polarity dependence measurement, 2) current voltage measurement, 3) two-point measurement and 4) discharge transient current measurement, can provide simple electrical parameters having direct relationship to defects state (type and quantity) in interconnect structure. All these measurement techniques use the MIM (metal-insulator-metal) structure such as the comb-serpentine structure commonly existing in integrated (IC) devices. This study also presents a newly discovered dielectric failure mechanism, that is the failure by a process of partial discharge dielectric breakdown phenomenon. The goal of the charging …

Crime is a serious problem to a society, and its costs are an economic burden. With the help of technology and developed tools, law enforcement agencies are making significant efforts to combat crime, so as to create a safer environment for society, both mentally and physically. The dynamic nature of crime and limited police resources often make their efforts challenging. Although there are numerous crime prediction models found in the policing literature, guidelines for policing strategies based on those models are still lacking. Towards addressing this gap, this dissertation constructs a dynamic policing simulation framework based on the concept of …

A Dynamic Multiple Stage, Multiple Objective Optimization Model With An Application To A Wastewater Treatment System, Prashant Tarun
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Decision-making for complex dynamic systems involves multiple objectives. Various methods balance the tradeoffs of multiple objectives, the most popular being weighted-sum and constraint-based methods. Under convexity assumptions an optimal solution to the constraint-based problem can also be obtained by solving the weighted-sum problems, and all Pareto optimal solutions can be obtained by systematically varying the weights or constraint limits. The challenge is to generate meaningful weights or constraint limits that yield practical solutions. In this dissertation, we utilize the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and develop a methodology to generate weight vectors successively for a dynamic multiple stage, multiple objective (MSMO) …

Logistics Best Practices For Regional Food Systems: A Review, Anuj Mittal, Caroline C. Krejci, Teri J. Craven
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive
The modern industrial food supply system faces many major environmental and social sustainability challenges. Regional food systems, in which consumers prefer geographically proximate food producers, offer a response to these challenges. However, the costs associated with distributing food from many small-scale producers to consumers have been a major barrier to long-term regional food system success. Logistics best practices from conventional supply chains have the potential to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of regional food supply chains (RFSCs). This paper provides a structured and in-depth review of the existing literature on RFSC logistics, including recommended and implemented best practices. The purpose …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Evaporation From Wavy Surfaces By Coupling Free Flow And Porous Media Flow, Bo Gao, Hossein Davarzani, Rainer Helmig, Kathleen M. Smits
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive
The macroscale roughness of the soil surface has significant influences on the mass/energy interactions between the subsurface and the atmosphere during evaporation. However, most previous works only consider evaporation behavior from flat surfaces. Based on experimental and numerical approaches, the goal of this work is to provide a framework for the understanding of the mechanisms of evaporation from irregular soil surfaces at representative elementary volume scale. A coupling free flow-porous media flow model was developed to describe evaporation under nonisothermal conditions. For simplicity, sinusoidal-type wavy surfaces were considered. To validate this modeling approach, an experiment using an open-ended wind tunnel …

This paper presents a novel method to couple an environmental bioremediation system with a subsurface renewable energy storage system. This method involves treating unsaturated contaminated soil using in-situ thermally enhanced bioremediation; the thermal system is powered by renewable energy. After remediation goals are achieved, the thermal system can then be used to store renewable energy in the form of heat in the subsurface for later use. This method can be used for enhanced treatment of environmental pollutants for which temperature is considered a limiting factor. For instance, this system can be used at a wide variety of petroleum-related sites that …

Soil water evaporation plays a critical role in mass and energy exchanges across the land– atmosphere interface. Although much is known about this process, there is no agreement on the best modeling approaches to determine soil water evaporation due to the complexity of the numerical modeling scenarios and lack of experimental data available to validate such models. Existing studies show numerical and experimental discrepancies in the evaporation behavior and soil water distribution in soils at various scales, driving us to revisit the key process representation in subsurface soil. Therefore, the goal of this work is to test different mathematical formulations …

Characterization of differently textured porous materials, as well as different volumetric porous media mixtures, in relation to mass and heat transport is vital for many engineering and research applications. Functional relations describing physical (e.g., grain-size distribution, total porosity), thermal, and gas diffusion properties of porous media and mixtures are necessary to optimize the design of porous systems that involve heat and gas transport processes. However, only a limited number of studies provide characterization of soil physical, thermal, and gas diffusion properties and the functional relationships of these properties under varying soil water contents, especially for soil mixtures, complicating optimization efforts. …

The United States Navy is considering Li-ion batteries for use as a primary power source for future naval shipboard pulsed-power applications. To supply sufficient power to a load, electrochemical cells are connected in series and parallel to create a higher voltage and higher capacity battery. The simplest way of connecting multiple cells in parallel is to tie all positive terminals together, all negative terminals together, and then electrically treat the array of cells as a single cell within the larger battery. In this configuration, a single battery management system (BMS) can be used to manage N parallel cells but there …

Standard-of-care regimes for cancer treatment have become more effective and sophisticated over the last decade due to research developments which facilitate specific targeting of treatments to certain cancers, and the ability to provide specialized care to cancer patients. However, cancer treatments overall still fall short of preventing spread of disease from the primary tumor to secondary sites where they settle and form new more aggressive tumors. It is this stage of disease progression which results in the majority of cancer deaths. The long-term goal of this research is to develop a system for the effective high throughput screening of chemotherapeutic …

Popular bioadhesives, such as fibrin, cyanoacrylate and albumin–glutaraldehyde-based materials, have been applied for clinical applications in wound healing, drug delivery, and bone and soft tissue engineering; however, their performances are limited by weak adhesion strength and rapid degradation. The long-term goal of this research is to develop a strong tissue adhering nanocomposite for tissue interfacing and wound healing applications. We begin by developing a mussel-inspired, nanocomposite–based, biodegradable tissue adhesive by blending poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) or N-hydroxysuccinimide modified PLGA nanoparticles (PLGA-NHS) and polydopamine nanoparticles with mussel-inspired polymers. Adhesive strength measurement of the nanocomposites on porcine skin-muscle constructs revealed that the …

While the specific heat capacity for molten salts was enhanced in many types of research, other engineering fluids (i.e., water, ethylene glycol, oil) showed decreased specific heat capacity with doping the nanoparticles. Recently, researchers discovered that a unique nanostructure formed by molten salt molecules, which were doped and interacted with nanoparticles, were the reason for enhanced specific heat capacity. Therefore, the enhanced specific heat capacity only happens for molten salts rather than other fluids that may …
