Probabilistic Multivariate Time Series Forecasting And Robust Uncertainty Quantification With Applications In Electricity Price Prediction, Jie Han
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Electricity price forecasting (EPF) is a crucial task for market participants seeking informed decisions in day-ahead electricity markets. The increasing penetration of stochastic renewable energy and the deregulation of electricity markets pose challenges to electricity price forecasting. Given the dependence of electricity prices on stochastic factors such as weather conditions, market dynamics, and customer behaviors, deterministic forecasting methods offer limited insight into the potential future states of energy prices in highly stochastic markets. In this study, a transformer-based electricity price forecasting (TDEPF) model was developed, utilizing a two-step training process and demonstrating superior performance compared to typical RNN models. Subsequently, …

Failure of sewer mains poses a significant threat to the society, necessitating a robust risk assessment tool that integrates failure likelihood and associated consequences for effective prioritization of mitigation efforts. This dissertation addresses this need through three key objectives: 1. Failure Likelihood Assessment: The study utilizes Monte-Carlo simulation to evaluate the probability of sewer main failures in common agressive environments, considering factors like sulfide and chloride exposures. It highlights that chloride-induced cracks and bond strength loss are more critical than sulfide-induced wall thickness loss. The degradation of concrete and reinforcement properties under chloride attack significantly reduces ductility, emphasizing the importance …

ABSTRACT: Traditionally, large-scale power systems have relied on power generation always exceeding the total load demand. Though this is most often the case, there are rare occurrences where failures in the generation, distribution, or even planning, that have led to situations where load demand quickly surpasses the generation capacity. In such cases, uncontrolled shedding of loads occurs, leading to brownouts or blackouts that can have catastrophic impact to both people and property. Advanced architectures, such as microgrids, offer a variety of improvements that are aimed at mitigating or even preventing these failures. Improvements include distributed power generation, active source and …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Damage index parameters that have been formulated to identify damage localization in plastically deformed materials typically require all six stress or strain components. Recently, simulations through Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Method (CPFEM) have been widely used to extract damage initiation parameters. However, these models are rarely verified due to the challenges in measuring the out-of-plane deformation/strain experimentally. A damage index combining the effective plastic strain and surface roughness change is investigated for identifying damage accumulation sites and predicting crack propagation path in polycrystalline pure Nickel. A novel Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique is developed to measure both in-plane and out-of-plane …
