Improved Crop Coefficients For Irrigation Scheduling, Steve E. Hinkle, James R. Gilley, Darrell G. Watts
Improved Crop Coefficients For Irrigation Scheduling, Steve E. Hinkle, James R. Gilley, Darrell G. Watts
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers
The use of water for irrigation is receiving more scrutiny as supplies are reduced, competing demands emerge, and application costs increase. Improved water management in irrigation requires an accurate scheduling of irrigations. In areas experiencing limited water supplies, this may involve scheduling irrigations to obtain maximum return per unit of water applied. Other areas may require scheduling to limit deep percolation of water and other valuable nutrients.
The adoption of irrigation scheduling programs such as those described by Kincaid and Heermann (1974) has resulted in reduced application of water. These programs provide estimates of when and how much to irrigate …
Fuel Ethanol From Raw Corn, Curtis Weller, M. P. Steinberg, E. D. Rodda
Fuel Ethanol From Raw Corn, Curtis Weller, M. P. Steinberg, E. D. Rodda
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Crude amylase preparations were produced by growing Aspergillus awamori and A. niger on raw, ground, whole corn. These Koji preparations were used to hydrolyze the starch of raw, ground whole corn to sugars during simultaneous fermentation of the sugars to ethanol by distillers active dry yeast. Ethanol concentrations of the fermentation beers were determined with gas-chromatography. These fermentations yielded an average of 89.6% theoretical ethanol compared to control, conventional, fermentations that had an average of 89.9%. Carbon dioxide evolutions were determined with use of Alwood valves. The initial fermentation rate was greater for the conventional fermentation than the Koji fermentation. …
Tillage Influences On Erosion During Furrow Irrigation, Elbert C. Dickey, Dean E. Eisenhauer, Paul J. Jasa
Tillage Influences On Erosion During Furrow Irrigation, Elbert C. Dickey, Dean E. Eisenhauer, Paul J. Jasa
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Erosion and runoff from furrow irrigation of corn was measured for three conventional and three reduced tillage systems in 1981 and 1982. The plots were located on a Hastings silt loam soil having a 0.5% slope and a 366 m furrow length. Erosion was the least for slot-planting and greatest for the chisel system, ranging from 20 to 340 kg/ha, respectively, for the first 45 min of runoff during the first irrigation. Erosion from the fourth irrigation was about 75% less than from the first irrigation. Cumulative runoff after 45 min of runoff was similar for all treatments. Nutrient losses …

Tillage, Residue And Erosion On Moderately Sloping Soils, Elbert C. Dickey, David P. Shelton, Paul J. Jasa, Thomas Peterson
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Tillage treatments leaving 20% or more of the soil surface covered with residue reduced soil erosion by at least 50% of that which occurred from a moldboard plow system. No-till had the least erosion and tended to have the lowest cumulative runoff. These results were based on rainfall simulation tests on six tillage treatments used on both 5 and 10% slopes in continuous corn production.

Sol Probe And Method Of Obtaining Moisture,Temperature And Root Distribution Of A Soil Profile, Marvin Twersky, William E. Splinter, Bruce C. Sandhorst
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
To provide a profile of simultaneous moisture, temperature and root density characteristics at different depths of soil, a soil probe is inserted in the soil with a viewing and camera section extending above the soil. Similarly, the probe provides a profile of simultaneous moisture, temperature and presence of molds, insects or other foreign matter in grain or similar media including liquid as well as solid granulated material. The portion of the probe that is in the soil or other media includes a source of light or light conveyance and windows which transmit an image of the soil at various depths …

Photodetachment As A Control Mechanism For Diffuse Discharge Switches, Gerhard Schaefer, P. F. Williams, Karl H. Schoenbach, John T. Moseley
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
Photodetachment is considered as a control mechanism for diffuse discharge switches. Experiments have been performed on photodetachment of ions in the flowing afterglow of a dc glow discharge in oxygen. Experiments with different laser wavelengths and the dependence of the optogalvanic signal on the laser energy flux indicate that 0- is the dominant negative ion. For an energy flux of 35 mJ/cm2, 50 percent of the 0- ions can be photodetached.

Interfacial Electrical Properties Of Ion-Beam Sputter Deposited Amorphous Carbon On Silicon, A. Azim Khan, John A. Woollam, Y. Chung, B. Banks
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Amorphous, “diamond-like” Carbon films have been deposited on Si substrates, using ion-beam sputtering. The interfacial properties are studied using capacitance and conductance measurements. Data are analyzed using existing theories for interfacial electrical properties. The density of electronic states at the interface, along with corresponding time constants are determined, and the density of interface states is unusually low for an as yet unoptimized

Time-Resolved Two-Dimensional Imaging Of Ground-State Species Using Laser-Induced Fluorescence, R. A. Dougal, P. F. Williams, D. C. Pease
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
Laser-induced fluorescence has been employed to obtain two-dimensional images of the spatial distribution of a vapor in the ground state with nanosecond resolution. The method has a wide range of potential applications, as it can be used to observe any species which has energy levels accessible to tunable laser systems. In the application we describe, aluminum vapor was observed jetting from spark gap electrodes and diffusing throughout the gap volume.

Us Army Missile Command Regulation 10-1, Chapter 29, Missile Intelligence Agency, Robert Bolin , Depositor
United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence
The Army Missile Command was the successor to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. The Army Ballistic Missile Agency was an organization that developed missiles for the Army and launched the first United States satellite, Explorer 1, on 31 January 1958. It was staffed, in part with Wernher von Braun and his team of scientists and engineers from Germany.
Missile Intelligence Agency was a special-purpose intelligence production organization concerned with missiles and related technology used or being developed by foreign armed forces.
In the Army system, a regulation numbered 10-1 often describes the organization and …
