A New Design Concept For Field Distortion Trigger Spark Gaps, G. Schaefer, B. Pashale, P. F. Williams, K. H. Schoenbach, H. Krompholz Apr 1985

A New Design Concept For Field Distortion Trigger Spark Gaps, G. Schaefer, B. Pashale, P. F. Williams, K. H. Schoenbach, H. Krompholz

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

A common field distortion triggered spark gap utilizing geometric field enhancement at sharp edges usually operates in a cascade mode via the trigger electrode. A new trigger concept is proposed allowing strong field enhancement and direct breakdown between the two main electrodes. A test setup was designed to prove the feasibility of this concept. Experimental results on delay and jitter depending on percent breakdown voltage are presented. Best results achieved are a delay of 9 ns and a jitter of 2 ns at a self-breakdown voltage of 15 kV.

Numerical Simulation Of Streamer Propagation In Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, S. K. Dhali, P. F. Williams Feb 1985

Numerical Simulation Of Streamer Propagation In Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, S. K. Dhali, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

Results of the application of flux-corrected transport techniques to a two-dimensional numerical simulation of streamer propagation are presented. Characteristics such as diameter, velocity, shape, and density gradient of the head, and ionization in the body of the propagating streamer are determined. These results provide new insight into streamer propagation.

Study Of Mo, Au, And Ni Implanted Molybdenum Laser Mirrors By Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Paul G. Snyder, George H. Bu-Abbud, Jae Oh, John A. Woollam, David Poker, D. E. Aspnes, David Ingram, Peter Pronko Jan 1985

Study Of Mo, Au, And Ni Implanted Molybdenum Laser Mirrors By Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Paul G. Snyder, George H. Bu-Abbud, Jae Oh, John A. Woollam, David Poker, D. E. Aspnes, David Ingram, Peter Pronko

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The implantation of 150 kev molybdenum ions into polished molybdenum laser mirrors is found to increase the complex dielectric constant in the visible spectrum. Analysis using the Bruggeman effective medium approximation demonstrates that the increase is due to surface smoothing and that the surface is made nearly atomically smooth by a fluence of 5 x 1015 /cm2. Implantation of Au at 1Mev caused considerable microscopic roughening, as well as a change in the bulk optical properties. 3 MeV Ni ion implantation caused only a slight surface roughening. A thin dielectric film (probably a hydrocarbon) is found to …

Microcomputer Based Digital Image Processing System Developed To Count And Size Laser-Generated Small Particle Images, K. D. Ahlers, D. R. Alexander Jan 1985

Microcomputer Based Digital Image Processing System Developed To Count And Size Laser-Generated Small Particle Images, K. D. Ahlers, D. R. Alexander

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A microcomputer-based digital image processing system has been developed to count and size laser-generated small particle images. Processing rates of 5 to 600 frames per minute were achieved by utilizing a real-time digital image processor. Particles from 7 to 700 µm in the plane of focus were counted and sized. A major emphasis in this work was to determine the basic problems and limitations involved with using a digital image processing scheme to accurately size particles. Areas that were investigated include the effect of the threshold level on measured particle size, particle boundary diffraction gray-level gradients, and geometric nonlinearities introduced …

Some Comments On The Crisis In Engineering And Engineering Technology Education, Kenneth G. Merkel Jan 1985

Some Comments On The Crisis In Engineering And Engineering Technology Education, Kenneth G. Merkel

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The maintenance of a high-quality technological base in the United States is dependent upon adequately funded engineering programs in American colleges and universities. At the current time, many American engineering educators feel that their academic programs are in a state of crisis with respect to adequacy of resources. A number of foundations associated with large American companies (Exxon, IBM, Amoco, and others) have provided funds designed to aid engineering education. Funded programs at the national level have been proposed in Congress. At the present time, the current level of funding is still inadequate. It will take a national technological crisis …

Least Tern Anp Piping Plover Biological Assessment Missouri River Bank Stabilization O&M

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Omaha District Corps of Engineers proposes to undertake maintenance of bank stabilization structures and streambank erosion control structures along the Missouri River.  One project would involve about 50 repairs of revetments, hardpoints, and refusals along the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) reach, Gavins Point Dam to Ponca, Nebraska (river mile 810-750).  The second project would involve about 250 repairs of dikes and revetments along the navigation channel from Florence Bend through Rulo Bend (river miles 627-498).

The interior least tern is being Federally listed as an endangered species.  The tern has a history of use of the Missouri River, …

Interril Soil Erosion, Part I. Development Of Model Equations, John E. Gilley, D. A. Woolheiser, D, B. Mcwhorter Jan 1985

Interril Soil Erosion, Part I. Development Of Model Equations, John E. Gilley, D. A. Woolheiser, D, B. Mcwhorter

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Equations describing overland flow depth, rainfall induced soil detachment and sediment transport capacity on interrill areas were identified. The Darcy-Weisbach equation which included a parameter for predicting flow resistance caused by rainfall was used to calculate depth of overland flow. Soil detachment was determined from an equation incorporating raindrop induced, impact pressure estimates. The product of a soil transport factor, bottom shear stress and flow velocity was used to calculate sediment transport capacity. Nondimensional forms of the model equations were evaluated using existing experimental data.
