Interactions Of Antiprotons With Atoms And Molecules, Mitio Inokuti Jan 1988

Interactions Of Antiprotons With Atoms And Molecules, Mitio Inokuti

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Antiproton beams of relatively low energies (below hundreds of MeV) have recently become available. The present article discusses the significance of those beams in the contexts of radiation physics and of atomic and molecular physics. Studies on individual collisions of antiprotons with atoms and molecules are valuable for a better understanding of collisions of protons or electrons, a subject with many applications. An antiproton is unique as' a stable, negative heavy particle without electronic structure, and it provides an excellent opportunity to study atomic collision theory. Comparison of the stopping powers of a material for an antiproton and a proton …

Computer Simulation Of The Melting Process In Linear Macromolecules, Donald W. Noid, George A. Pfeffer, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, Bernhard Wunderlich Jan 1988

Computer Simulation Of The Melting Process In Linear Macromolecules, Donald W. Noid, George A. Pfeffer, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, Bernhard Wunderlich

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Polymer crystal melting kinetics is simulated by using molecular dynamics. A simplified molecular model of polyethylene crystal melting consisting of one extended chain on a polyethylene-like crystal surface is presented. The simulation data indicate that the end-to-end distance (eed) of radius of gyration (rg) has a simple exponential dependence on time. The rate constants for eed and rg are found to be temperature and molecular length dependent. A more detailed analysis of polymer crystal melting will be described

A Timesaving Method For Labeling Figures, Tables And References, Randy Carlson

Biological Process Development Facility: Staff Publications

No matter how carefully an author outlines a manuscript, the figures, tables, and bibliographic citations are inevitably renumbered one or more times before the final draft. For example, the addition of a new reference to a late draft will sometimes entail the renumbering of all other references throughout the manuscript. A partial solution to this common technical problem in scientific writing is offered here. It is a refinement of an approach known to many scientists.

Electronic Image Analysis Of Crop Residue Cover On Soil, George E. Meyer, Anthony Stepanek, David P. Shelton, Elbert C. Dickey Jan 1988

Electronic Image Analysis Of Crop Residue Cover On Soil, George E. Meyer, Anthony Stepanek, David P. Shelton, Elbert C. Dickey

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Classification procedures for using both black and white and color imaging systems were developed and tested for determination of percent residue cover on the soil surface from video and slide images. A spectral analysis of the image components was used for determining applicable wavelengths and filters. Color imagery provided an acceptable replacement for manual visual procedures. Black-and-white imagery also worked when appropriate blocking filters were used.

In-Situ Stress Orientation And Magnritjde At The Fenton Geothermal Site, New Mexico, Determined From Wellbore Breakouts, Colleen A. Barton, Mark D. Zoback, Kerry L. Burns

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The acoustic borehole televiewer provides excellent data for the detection and measurement of stress-induced wellbore breakouts. Analog televiewer data from the Fenton Geothermal well EE-3 in New Mexico were digitized and interactivly processed for detection and analysis of azimuth and shape of stress-induced breakouts occurring in the well at depths of about 2.9 - 3.5 km. A statistical analysis of the measured breakout azimuths yields a well resolved orientation of least horizontal principal stress of 119 °, consistent with least principal stress data from the Rio Grande Rift. As the magnitude of the least horizontal compressive stress, Shmin, in …

The newspaper articles also gave management recommendations for the upcoming week. Similar demonstration projects can be conducted using the procedures described in this paper.

Correlation Of Starch Recovery With Assorted Quality Factors Of Four Corn Hybrids, Curtis L. Weller, Marvin R. Paulsen, Marvin P. Steinberg Jan 1988

Correlation Of Starch Recovery With Assorted Quality Factors Of Four Corn Hybrids, Curtis L. Weller, Marvin R. Paulsen, Marvin P. Steinberg

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A laboratory wet-milling process was developed for use in determining starch recovery of yellow dent corn. The effects of harvest moisture and drying air temperature on starch recovery were investigated for four hybrids. A split split-plot experimental design was used to evaluate the effects. Starch recovery was not significantly different among the hybrids; however, it did decreases both harvest moisture and drying air temperature increased. Starch recovery was correlated with quantitative measures of assorted quality factors. Regression analysis found starch recovery to be a function of starch content, test weight, and ethanol-soluble protein.

Calibration Accuracy Of Pesticide Application Equipment, Robert Grisso, E. J. Hewett, Elbert C. Dickey, R. D. Schnieder, E. W. Nelson Jan 1988

Calibration Accuracy Of Pesticide Application Equipment, Robert Grisso, E. J. Hewett, Elbert C. Dickey, R. D. Schnieder, E. W. Nelson

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Afield survey of 140 private and commercial pesticide applicators was conducted during the spring of 1986 in 12 counties of central and eastern Nebraska. The results showed that one out of every three cooperators was applying pesticides within ± 5% of their intended application rate. Results indicated that applicators have reduced application errors from that of a similar survey conducted in 1979. However, most errors still can be traced to incorrect calibration. Ninety-four percent of the cooperators used some type of calibration method. Two-thirds used the "Known Area" method. Those using a calibration method more than once a year had …

Surface Cover From Corn Residue On Sandy Soils, R. Todd, Norman L. Klocke, Elbert C. Dickey, Dennis Bauer Jan 1988

Surface Cover From Corn Residue On Sandy Soils, R. Todd, Norman L. Klocke, Elbert C. Dickey, Dennis Bauer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Corn residue left as surface cover after land preparation and planting by various combinations of tillage implements and surface planters, respectively, was measured on four research/ demonstration sites with sandy soils in Nebraska. Surface cover ranged from 51 to 80% for the no-till treatments to 14 to 53% for the twice-disked treatments. The wide range in cover was due to the amount of antecedent residues from the previous crop and the soil type which ranged from sandy loam to tine sands. Other tillage implements included a rolling cultivator, sweep-plow, and mulch-treader.

Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples Jan 1988

Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Can we guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms in the environment? To anticipate my remarks, the answer to the title question is “No, we cannot guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms released into the environment.” Indeed, it is a tenet of the scientific method that nothing can be proved, only disproved. Thus, we can never show that a release will be safe. We could only show that it would be unsafe, if that were the case. However, if the question is posed differently, for example, can we safely release genetically engineered organisms into the environment?, the answer is …

Two-Dimensionat Studies Of Streamers Fn Gases, S. K. Dhali, P. F. Williams Dec 1987

Two-Dimensionat Studies Of Streamers Fn Gases, S. K. Dhali, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We present the results of two-dimensional computer simulations of streamer initiation and propagation in atmospheric pressure N2. The simulation algorithm makes use of flux-corrected transport techniques and was used as a tool to study the solutions of the transport equations under conditions suitable for streamers, for which realistic analytic solutions are not known. We present and discuss conclusions about streamer transport based on the results of these studies. Finally, we present a novel method of checking on the numerical accuracy with which the algorithm solves the transport equations.

Nebraska's Modified-Open-Front Farrowing Houses Design And Operation, Gerald R. Bodman, Donald G. Levis, Duane E. Reese Nov 1987

Nebraska's Modified-Open-Front Farrowing Houses Design And Operation, Gerald R. Bodman, Donald G. Levis, Duane E. Reese

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Two modified-open-front non-mechanically ventilated farrowing houses with creep boxes were operated over a two year period. Annual energy requirements were in the range of 10.6 to 10.9 cents per crate per day. No adverse effects on pig performance were realized. In most instances pig performance exceeded national standards of excellent performance—survival rates in excess of 90% and 21-day pig weights of 5.9 to 6.8 kg (13 to 15 lb). The study verified that another alternative is available to producers who do not want additional mechanical equipment to operate and maintain.

Size Distribution Of Sediment As Affected By Surface Residue And Slope Length, John E. Gilley, S. C. Finkner, G. E. Varvel Sep 1987

Size Distribution Of Sediment As Affected By Surface Residue And Slope Length, John E. Gilley, S. C. Finkner, G. E. Varvel

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Runoff samples for determination of size distribution of sediment were collected under simulated rainfall conditions at selected downslope distances on plots covered with sorghum and soybean residue at rates ranging from 0.00 to 6.73 t/ha . The effects of surface residue and slope length on size distribution of sediment were evaluated. Substantial movement of sediment in the form of aggregates was found for each of the residue treatments. Significant differences in size distribution of sediment occurred between residue treatments. For a given residue rate, differences in sediment size distribution were found between sorghum and soybean residue. Size distribution of sediment …

Chemically Driven Convection In A Porous Medium, Hendrik J. Viljoen, V. Hlavacek Aug 1987

Chemically Driven Convection In A Porous Medium, Hendrik J. Viljoen, V. Hlavacek

Papers in Chemical Reactions

This paper is focused on the analysis of interaction of free convection and exothermic chemical reaction. As a consequence of the chemical reaction, free convection effects can result. It is difficult to perform an analytical bifurcation analysis of the full nonlinear governing equations; however, Fourier expansion combined with a Galerkin approximation results in a small set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations (initial value problem) that are amenable to analysis. Conditions for branching of the solution can be determined in an analytical way. A continuation algorithm makes it possible to calculate the branches of stability. The results of the approximate analysis …

Influence Of Photodetachment On The Switching Characteristics Of Diffuse Discharges Containing Oxygen, G. Schaefer, G. Z. Hutcheson, K. H. Schoenbach, P. F. Williams May 1987

Influence Of Photodetachment On The Switching Characteristics Of Diffuse Discharges Containing Oxygen, G. Schaefer, G. Z. Hutcheson, K. H. Schoenbach, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

Externally sustained discharges can be used as opening and closing switches in pulsed power systems. Admixtures of attachers allow rapid opening when the external sustaining source is terminated; however, they will increase losses in the closing phase. Photodetachment has been proposed as an additional control mechanism to overcome these losses. This letter presents measurements on photoionization sustained discharges in argon and nitrogen containing admixtures of oxygen under the influence of laser radiation. Strong changes of the voltage-current characteristics have been observed. The influence of parameters such as percentage of O2, laser power, laser pulse width, and circuit impedance …

Field-Enhancement Calculations For A Field-Distortion Triggered Spark Gap, B. Pashale, G. Schaefer, K. H. Schoenbach, P. F. Williams Jan 1987

Field-Enhancement Calculations For A Field-Distortion Triggered Spark Gap, B. Pashale, G. Schaefer, K. H. Schoenbach, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We present the results of numerical field calculation which supplement a recent article in which we described a new design concept for field-distortion triggered spark gaps. The calculations verify the shielding and field enhancement assumptions made in the article, and they provide insight into the interaction of the design tradeoffs associated with simultaneously maximizing the holdoff voltage and the triggering capability of the gap.
