A low cost, simple solar heating system consisting of an active collector with an In-Floor Heat Distribution and Storage (IFHDS) system was developed in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s. A two-dimensional finite difference model was developed and used to simulate the performance of IFHDS system cross-sections. Simulation runs were conducted with a steady-periodic model for the temperature of the solar-heated air in the IFHDS system cross-section. The steady periodic simulation results indicated IFHDS system energy efficiency increases with decreasing air temperature in the room above the IFHDS system, peak temperature of the solar-heated air in the IFHDS …

Using Spreadsheets To Teach Problem Solving In A First Year Class, A. John Boye, P. F. Williams, Rodney J. Soukup

The “problem solving” portion of a two semester first year electrical engineering course is described. This course makes use of personal computers and spreadsheets to try to improve students’ problem solving skills. The goal is to give students a better understanding of engineering concepts and not just mathematical details. In addition to describing the course contents, a brief review of the rationale that was used in selecting the hardware and software used in the course is also given.

Critical Shear Stress And Critical Flow Rates For Initiation Of Rilling, John E. Gilley, W. J. Elliot, J. M. Laflen, J. R. Simanton

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to identify critical shear stress and critical flow rates required to initiate rilling on selected sites. The data used in this investigation were collected from soils located throughout the USA where crop residues had been removed, and moldboard plowing and disking had occurred. Runoff and soil loss measurements were made on sites where simulated rainfall was applied to preformed rills. Multiple regression analyses were used to relate critical shear stress values and critical flow rates to selected soil properties. The soil-based regression equations were found to provide reliable estimates. Information identified in this study will improve …

This thesis describes sign-to-speech translation using neural networks. Sign language translation is an interesting but difficult problem for which neural network techniques seem promising because of their ability to adjust to the user's hand movements, which is not possible to do by most other techniques. However, even using neural networks and artificial sign languages, the translation is hard, and the best-known system, that of Fels & Hinton (1993), is capable of translating only 66 root words and 203 words including their conjugations. This research improves their results to 790 root signs and 2718 words including their conjugations while preserving a …

EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE General Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure. The fate of radionuclides in the subsurface is of critical importance to the planning, siting, and evaluation of repositories for radioactive wastes. Mathematical models are an integral component of this process. An accurate understanding of radionuclide transport is required to successfully formulate and use these models. It is well-known that the subsurface is both physically and chemically heterogeneous. Recent research has shown that the resultant spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity and of sorption capacity can significantly affect solute transport in the subsurface. Final Environmental Assessment For Endangered Species Habitat Improvement/Creation Along The Missouri River Main Stem System

An environmental assessment has been prepared for several methods of habitat enhancement and creation along the Missouri River Main stem System. Most of the actions described were suggested in the November 1990, U.S. Fish and wildlife Service Biological Opinion on the operation of the Missouri River Main Stem System and will provide safer nesting habitat for interior least terns and piping plovers.

Adverse impacts of these actions are all temporary and localized, consisting of temporary, localized smoke, and possible ash suspension in nearby waters due to burning of vegetation and presence of temporary noise disturbance during helicopter application of herbicide …

Industrial Agricultural Products Center: Publications and Information

Significant progress has been made toward the goals of the Center. Activities have centered on the identification of opportunities in terms of new industrial uses of agricultural commodities. Assistance has been provided to UNL faculty to procure funding research in the respective areas. In other cases, specific faculty positions have been identified. Subsequent hirings have built a strong group of faculty affiliates.

The effect of relative humidity and temperature on tensile strength of two types of protein-based [corn zein (CZ) and wheat gluten (WG)] and two types of cellulosic [methylcellulose (MC) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)] hydrophilic edible films was investigated.

Property Modification Of Edible Wheat, Gluten-Based Films, A. Gennadios, Curtis L. Weller, R. F. Testin

Procedures were developed to produce edible wheat, gluten-based films. A film was produced as a standard. Five additional films were then produced by modifying the initial film-forming solution. Modifications included changing the plasticizer, partially substituting wheat gluten with soy protein isolate and corn zein, and incorporating two acetylated monoglyceride products. All films were characterized by measuring selected mechanical properties, and permeabilities to water vapor and to oxygen. Comparison of the films, in terms of their measured properties, indicates ways to improve the overall performance of the standard film as a potential packaging material.
