One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett
One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Phase Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) radar an emerging technology for autonomous cars. It is more flexible than the current frequency modulated systems, offering better detection resolution, interference mitigation, and future development opportunities. The issue preventing PMCW adoption is the need for high sample-rate analog to digital converters (ADCs). Due to device limits, a large increase in cost and power consumption occurs for every added resolution bit for a given sampling rate. This thesis explores radar detection techniques for few-bit and 1-bit ADC measurements. 1-bit quantization typically results in poor amplitude estimation, which can limit detections if the target signals are …
Modeling And Analysis Of A 12kw Solar-Wind Hybrid Renewable Energy System, Ekaterina Muravleva
Modeling And Analysis Of A 12kw Solar-Wind Hybrid Renewable Energy System, Ekaterina Muravleva
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The increase in rate of depletion of natural resources in the last decade as well as the increased global focus on climate change has made the transition to renewable resources of energy a priority for various countries and organizations across the globe. The sporadic nature of energy generated by photovoltaic systems and wind energy conversion systems has led to an increased utilization of more reliable hybrid renewable energy systems. A combination of both solar and wind energy-based power generations systems reduces the impact of seasonal variation on the amount of power generated and therefore, can be used under varying weather …
Optimization Of A Novel Barnes Maze Protocol For Assessing Antioxidant Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Connor C. Gee
Optimization Of A Novel Barnes Maze Protocol For Assessing Antioxidant Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Connor C. Gee
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Current preclinical research into traumatic brain injury focuses heavily upon cellular and molecular testing to determine the effects of injury and potential benefits of neuroprotective treatments. While this may be a useful method, some argue that an increased focus on behavioral testing could lead to better clinical translation as these assays assess the longer term, downstream effects from a brain injury. The most characterized behavioral tests used in traumatic brain injury research are the spatial learning and memory paradigms, Morris Water Maze and Barnes Maze. The Morris Water Maze is the most used of theses paradigms and relies on spatial …
Effect Of Injury Mechanism And Severity On The Molecular Pathophysiology Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Brandon Mcdonald
Effect Of Injury Mechanism And Severity On The Molecular Pathophysiology Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Brandon Mcdonald
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) mechanism and severity are heterogenous clinically, resulting in a multitude of physical, cognitive, and behavioral deficits. However, approximately 80% suffer from milder injuries. Thus, examining pathophysiological changes associated with mild TBI is imperative for improving clinical translation and evaluating the efficacy of potential therapeutic strategies. Through this work, we developed models of TBI, ranging in both injury mechanism and severity, using an electromagnetic controlled cortical impact (CCI) device. First, we characterized and optimized a closed head, mild TBI model (DTBI) to determine the clinical translatability and practicality of producing repeated mild injuries. Interestingly, we determined that …

Data-Driven Prioritization And Empirical Predictions For Bridge Scour In Nebraska, Awgku Ahmad Hashim Awg Bolhasan
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The effect of scour at the bridge substructure results in an increase in the vulnerability of the overall bridge stability. Previous studies have found that current guidelines are often overly-conservative with respect to scour. This project aims to provide guidance on hydraulic modeling parameters and reasonable scour estimates specific to Nebraska conditions. This will enable engineers to assess bridge sites for scour more precisely for efficient and effective design and countermeasures.
Four sites were surveyed for scour changes between the period of December 9, 2020, to April 20, 2021. At these four sites, overland and bathymetry survey data were collected. …
The Dark Annulus Of A Drop In A Hele-Shaw Cell Is Caused By The Refraction Of Light Through Its Meniscus, Sangjin Ryu, Haipeng Zhang, Carson Emeigh
The Dark Annulus Of A Drop In A Hele-Shaw Cell Is Caused By The Refraction Of Light Through Its Meniscus, Sangjin Ryu, Haipeng Zhang, Carson Emeigh
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Knowing the meniscus shape of confined drops is important for understanding how they make first contact and then coalesce. When imaged from the top view by brightfield microscopy, a liquid drop (e.g., corn syrup) confined in a Hele-Shaw cell, surrounded by immiscible liquid (e.g., mineral oil), had a dark annulus, and the width of the annulus decreased with increasing concentration of corn syrup. Since the difference in the annulus width was presumed to be related to the meniscus shape of the drops, three-dimensional images of the drops with different concentrations were obtained using confocal fluorescence microscopy, and their cross-sectional meniscus …

Phased Construction Bridges: Monitoring And Analysis For Traffic-Induced Vibration, Khalid Al-Kady, Christine E. Wittich, Richard L. Wood, George Morcous
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Phased construction is a common technique utilized to allow bridges to remain partially open to traffic throughout the construction process. The segment of the bridge deck that is constructed second cures under the effect of traffic-induced vibration transmitted from the adjacent bridge-deck segment, which is open to traffic. However, subjecting bridge decks to traffic-induced vibration during early-age curing raises concerns about the durability of the decks. The primary goal of this study is to generate a fundamental understanding of the transmission of traffic-induced vibration, the extent of degradation on phased construction bridge decks, and the impact of potential mitigation measures. …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
N-heterocycles are key structural units in many drugs, biologically interesting molecules and functional materials. To avoid the residues of metal catalysts, the construction of N-heterocycles under metal-free conditions has attracted much research attention in academia and industry. Among them, the intramolecular electrochemical C-H aminations arguably constitute environmentally friendly methodologies for the metal-free construction of N-heterocycles, mainly due to the direct use of clean electricity as the redox agents. With the recent renaissance of organic electrosynthesis, the intramolecular electrochemical C-H aminations have undergone much progress in recent years. In this article, we would like to summarize the advances in this research …

Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Acute anemia induces rapid expansion of erythroid precursors and accelerated differentiation to replenish erythrocytes. Paracrine signals—involving cooperation between stem cell factor (SCF)/Kit signaling and other signaling inputs—are required for the increased erythroid precursor activity in anemia. Our prior work revealed that the sterile alpha motif (SAM) domain 14 (Samd14) gene increases the regenerative capacity of the erythroid system in a mouse genetic model and promotes stress-dependent Kit signaling. However, the mechanism underlying Samd14’s role in stress erythropoiesis is unknown. We identified a protein-protein interaction between Samd14 and the α- and β-heterodimers of the F-actin capping protein (CP) complex. Knockdown of …

Exploring The Metabolic Landscape Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cells Using Genome-Scale Metabolic Modeling, Mohammad Mazharul Islam, Andrea Goertzen, Pankaj K. Singh, Rajib Saha
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a major research focus because of its poor therapy response and dismal prognosis. PDAC cells adapt their metabolism to the surrounding environment, often relying on diverse nutrient sources. Because traditional experimental techniques appear exhaustive to find a viable therapeutic strategy, a highly curated and omics-informed PDAC genome-scale metabolic model was reconstructed using patient-specific transcriptomics data. From the model-predictions, several new metabolic functions were explored as potential therapeutic targets in addition to the known metabolic hallmarks of PDAC. Significant downregulation in the peroxisomal beta oxidation pathway, flux modulation in the carnitine shuttle system, and upregulation in …

Exciton polaritons, the part-light and part-matter quasiparticles in semiconductor optical cavities, are promising for exploring Bose–Einstein condensation, non-equilibrium many-body physics and analogue simulation at elevated temperatures. However, a room-temperature polaritonic platform on par with the GaAs quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy at low temperatures remains elusive. The operation of such a platform calls for long-lifetime, strongly interacting excitons in a stringent material system with large yet nanoscale-thin geometry and homogeneous properties. Here, we address this challenge by adopting a method based on the solution synthesis of excitonic halide perovskites grown under nanoconfinement. Such nanoconfinement growth facilitates the synthesis …

Chronic low back pain is a global socioeconomic crisis and treatments are lacking in part due to inadequate models. Etiological research suggests that the predominant pathology associated with chronic low back pain is intervertebral disc degeneration. Various research teams have created rat models of disc degeneration, but the clinical translatability of these models has been limited by an absence of robust chronic painlike behavior. To address this deficit, disc degeneration was induced via an artificial annular tear in female Sprague Dawley rats. The subsequent degeneration, which was allowed to progress for 18-weeks, caused a drastic reduction in disc volume. Furthermore, …

Evaluation Of An Equivalent Mean Grain Size Diameter To Rationally Predict The Erodibility Of Fine Riverbed Soils In Nebraska, Basil Abualshar
Evaluation Of An Equivalent Mean Grain Size Diameter To Rationally Predict The Erodibility Of Fine Riverbed Soils In Nebraska, Basil Abualshar
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The erosion of riverbed soils under the bridges is one of the major reasons that cause bridge closure or failure leading to a significant effect on the local economy. One of the commonly used methods to predict the erosion rate of soils is the excess shear stress method, which is based on two parameters describing the erodibility behavior; the erodibility coefficient and the critical shear stress. On the other hand, studies showed that the mean grain size diameter D50 could be correlated to the erosion resistance of soils, usually for cohesionless soils but not for cohesive soils. It is …

Poor ionic conductivity of the catalyst-binding, submicrometer- thick ionomer layers in energy conversion and storage devices is a huge challenge. However, ionomers are rarely designed keeping in mind the specific issues associated with nanoconfinement. Here, we designed nature-inspired ionomers (calix-2) having hollow, macrocyclic, calix[4]arene-based repeat units with precise, sub-nanometer diameter. In ≤100 nm-thick films, the in-plane proton conductivity of calix-2 was up to 8 times higher than the current benchmark ionomer Nafion at 85% relative humidity (RH), while it was 1−2 orders of magnitude higher than Nafion at 20−25% RH. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and other synthetic techniques allowed us …
