Modeling Of Solid Phase Detonations, C. Richter, Hendrik J. Viljoen, N. F. J. Van Rensburg Sep 1999

Modeling Of Solid Phase Detonations, C. Richter, Hendrik J. Viljoen, N. F. J. Van Rensburg

Papers in Reaction Kinetics

In contrast to conventional explosives which constitute rapid decomposition of the molecular structure acconlpanied by the release of large volumes of gaseous products, heterogeneous mixtures in the SHS realm react by progression of a thermal wave at velocities far below the speed of sound in such mixtures. Interestingly, ultrafast solid phase reactions can be initiated under the right conditions. A shock wave compresses the solid mixture to densities well beyond the theoretical mean ambient density (TMD) and compression becomes the major form of preheating. In addition, elastic potential energy is pumped into the lattice structure to induce severe distortion and …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Crystalline WO3-x is an infrared (IR) electrochromic material having possible applications in satellite thermal control and IR switches. Optical constants of electrochromic materials change upon ion intercalation, usually with H+ or Li+. Of primary concern for device design are the optical constants in both the intercalated and deintercalated states. In situ and ex situ ellipsometric data are used to characterize both the deposition process and the optical constants of the films. Ex situ data from a UV-Vis-NIR ellipsometer are combined with data from a mid-infrared Fourier-transform-infrared-based ellipsometer to provide optical constants over a spectral range …

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Managing the environmental risk associated with livestock production is a significant challenge. Nitrogen and phosphorus are commonly implicated as the sources of ground and surface water quality problems associated with livestock production. The degree of imbalance between these nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs for a livestock operation defines the magnitude of potential environmental risk and provides insight as to the underlying causes of these challenges. A nitrogen and phosphorus balance was constructed for 33 Nebraska confinement livestock operations. Twenty-five and 17 of these operations experienced significant nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances, respectively (50% more nutrient inputs than outputs). Nutrient …

Polycrystalline Conducting Polymers And Precursors Thereof Having Adjustable Morphology And Physical Properties, Ravi F. Saraf Aug 1999

Polycrystalline Conducting Polymers And Precursors Thereof Having Adjustable Morphology And Physical Properties, Ravi F. Saraf

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents

Polycrystalline materials containing crystallies of precursors to electrically conductive polymers and electrically conductive polymers are described which have an adjustable high degree of crystallinity. The intersticial regions between the crystallites contains amorphous material containing precursors to electrically conductive polymers and/or electrically conductive polymers. The degree of crystallinity is achieved by preparing the materials under conditions which provide a high degree of mobility to the polymer molecules permitting them to associate with one another to form a crystalline state. This is preferable achieved by including additives, such as plasticizers and diluents, to the solution from which the polycrystalline material is formed. …

Elastic Wave Propagation And Scattering In Heterogeneous, Anisotropic Media: Textured Polycrystalline Materials, Joseph A. Turner Aug 1999

Elastic Wave Propagation And Scattering In Heterogeneous, Anisotropic Media: Textured Polycrystalline Materials, Joseph A. Turner

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The propagation of elastic waves through heterogeneous, anisotropic media is considered. Appropriate ensemble averaging of the elastic wave equation leads to the Dyson equation which governs the mean response of the field. The Dyson equation is given here in terms of anisotropic elastic Green’s dyadics for the medium with and without heterogeneities. The solution of the Dyson equation for the mean response is given for heterogeneities that are weak. The formalism is further specified for the case of equiaxed cubic polycrystalline metals with a single aligned axis. The Green’s dyadics in this case are those for a transversely isotropic medium. …

Adaptive Sampling For Coordinate Metrology, Robert Edgeworth, Robert G. Wilhelm Jul 1999

Adaptive Sampling For Coordinate Metrology, Robert Edgeworth, Robert G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

An iterative sampling process for dimensional measurement is presented. The strategy is based upon the use of surface normal measurement data to develop an interpolating curve between sample points. The interpolant is used to select subsequent measurement targets iteratively. The process is repeated until the measurement converges to a complete and accurate evaluation of the surface. The required sample size is proportional to part quality. The most accurate parts will require the least sample points; whereas, lower quality parts will require a greater number of total samples. The method is particularly applicable to measurement of complex surfaces with coordinate measuring …
