Applications Of Using The Odor Footprint Tool, Richard R. Stowell, L. Koppolu, Dennis D. Schulte, Richard K. Koelsch

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

The Odor Footprint Tool is a science-based computer resource for use in evaluating the potential odor impact of new and expanded animal production facilities. It was developed to assist livestock producers, their service providers, and county planning and zoning officials in making reasonable decisions while limiting the negative impact of livestock operations on surrounding neighbors and rural communities. The Odor Footprint Tool utilizes an EPA regulatory model (AERMOD), weather databases, new source code, and user input to generate regional odor roses, odor footprints, and directional setback distance curves. Odor roses provide a generic picture of the directionality of …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Across the United States and abroad, innovative producers, processors, trade organizations and others in the agricultural sector are exploring the promise of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to improve their environmental and business performance. An Environmental Management System or EMS helps farmers develop their own, personal strategies for reducing environmental risk on their operations by integrating environmental management considerations into production management decisions. It is a voluntary, flexible approach and is based on a producer's own sense of how best to manage an operation.

Partnerships for Livestock Environmental Management Systems is a 4-year project to explore the potential of livestock Environmental …

Role Of Interface Bonding In Spin-Dependent Tunneling (Invited), Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Kirill D. Belashchenko May 2005

Role Of Interface Bonding In Spin-Dependent Tunneling (Invited), Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Kirill D. Belashchenko

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Measured positive values of the spin polarization of the tunneling current from 3d ferromagnetic metals are commonly explained by the dominant s-electron contribution based on symmetry considerations for bulk materials, ignoring the influence of the interfaces. In this work, three different models are considered which suggest that the spin polarization is primarily determined by the electronic and atomic structures of the ferromagnet/insulator interfaces rather than by the bulk properties. A simple tight-binding model demonstrates that the existence of interface states and their contribution to the tunneling current depend on the degree of hybridization between the orbitals on metal …

Determination Of Dynamic Delamination Toughness Of A Graphite-Fiber/Epoxy Composite Using Hopkinson Pressure Bar, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Modified dynamic three-point-bending and compact shearing test configurations based on Hopkinson pressure bar (HPB) and crack detection gage (CDG) (Vishay Intertechnology, Inc) were used for the determination of the dynamic mode I and mode II delamination-initiation toughness of a unidirectional graphite-fiber/epoxy composite made of P7051S-20Q-1000 prepregs (Toray Composites America). The transient loading history was recorded precisely by the HPB installed with a highresolution digital oscilloscope, and the crack initiation and delay time were captured using the CDG. By means of dynamic finite-element analysis (FEA) of the impact processes with the loading history and crack initiation time as input, the critical …

Magnetic Behavior Of Sm-Co-Based Permanent Magnets During Order/Disorder Phase Transformations, Shampa Aich, J. Kostogorova, Jeffrey E. Shield May 2005

Magnetic Behavior Of Sm-Co-Based Permanent Magnets During Order/Disorder Phase Transformations, Shampa Aich, J. Kostogorova, Jeffrey E. Shield

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The structural transformation from the metastable disordered TbCu7-type SmCo7 structure to the equilibrium ordered Th2Zn17-type Sm2Co17 structure was revealed by x-ray diffraction analysis using Reitveld refinement. The magnetic properties depended strongly on the stage of the transformation, as the coercivity strongly depended on the annealing temperature. The as-solidified alloy in the TbCu7-type structure had a coercivity of 4 kOe, which increased to greater than 9 kOe. The coercivity decreased to around 5 kOe as the transformation neared completion upon annealing at higher temperatures. The magnetization processes were also strongly influenced …

Modeling Of Immunoglobulin Uptake By N,N,N′,N′-Ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic Acid-Modified Zirconia Particles Under Static And Dynamic Conditions, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Anuradha Subramanian May 2005

Modeling Of Immunoglobulin Uptake By N,N,N′,N′-Ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic Acid-Modified Zirconia Particles Under Static And Dynamic Conditions, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Anuradha Subramanian

Papers in Biotechnology

A matrix developed from N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid-modified zirconia beads (further referred to as r_PEZ); 25–38 μm in diameter and with a pore size of 22 ± 3 nm, was utilized for the separation of immunoglobulins (Igs). r_PEZ has been shown to bind to various Igs originating from a wide variety of species. To understand the mechanisms controlling the uptake of Igs by r_PEZ, static protein uptake experiments were carried out. The protein uptake profiles were further modeled with a kinetic rate constant model. Individual studies were undertaken for human immunoglobulin A, G and M (HIgA, HIgG and HIgM). The kinetic rate …

A Symmetric Green Function For The Non-Collinear Magnetic Multilayer, Mikhail Ye Zhuravlev, John D. Burton, A. V. Vedyayev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Symmetry properties of the Green function in magnetic multilayers with noncollinear magnetization of the layers are investigated on the basis of the transfer matrix method. The Green function symmetric with respect to permutation of its arguments is constructed. It is shown how the boundary conditions can be imposed on this Green function.

We have proposed a constructive way to build a symmetric one-electron GF for the magnetic multilayer with magnetization in the plane of the layers. To build this GF we solved the following problems: finding the solution of the systems of differential equations of general form; matching the solutions …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Efficient gene delivery is a fundamental goal of biotechnology and has numerous applications in both basic and applied science. Substrate-mediated delivery and reverse transfection enhance gene transfer by increasing the concentration of DNA in the cellular microenvironment through immobilizing a plasmid to a cell culture substrate prior to cell seeding. In this report, we examine gene delivery of plasmids that were complexed with cationic polymers (polyplexes) or lipids (lipoplexes) and subsequently immobilized to cell culture or biomaterial substrates by adsorption. Polyplexes and lipoplexes were adsorbed to either tissue culture polystyrene or serum-adsorbed tissue culture polystyrene. The quantity of DNA immobilized …

Identification Of The Mass Transfer Mechanisms Involved In The Transport Of Human Immunoglobulin - G In N,N,N',N' -Ethylnediaminetetramenthylenephosphonic Acid Modified Zirconia, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Perer W. Carr, Anuradha Subramanian Apr 2005

Carr, Anuradha Subramanian

Papers in Biotechnology

Zirconia particles modified with N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid (EDTPA), further referred to as r_PEZ, were studied as a support material for use in chromatography. Our previous studies have demonstrated the utility of r_PEZ in the separation of immunoglobulins from biological fluids. In the present study we sought to understand the underlying factors and identify the rate-limiting mechanisms that govern the transport of biomolecules in r_PEZ. Pulse injection techniques were used to elucidate the individual mass transfer parameters. Elution profiles obtained under retained and unretained conditions were approximated by the Gaussian equation and the corresponding HETP contributions were estimated. The dependence of …

Ballistic Anisotropic Magnetoresistance, Julian P. Velev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Electronic transport in ferromagnetic ballistic conductors is predicted to exhibit ballistic anisotropic magnetoresistance—a change in the ballistic conductance with the direction of magnetization. This phenomenon originates from the effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the electronic band structure which leads to a change in the number of bands crossing the Fermi energy when the magnetization direction changes. We illustrate the significance of this phenomenon by performing ab initio calculations of the ballistic conductance in ferromagnetic Ni and Fe nanowires which display a sizable ballistic anisotropic magnetoresistance when magnetization changes direction from parallel to perpendicular to the wire axis.

Phase-Graded Deposition Of Diamond-Like Carbon On Nanotips By Near-Field Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition, J. Shi, Yongfeng Lu, X. Y. Chen, R. S. Cherukuri, K. K. Mendu, H. Wang, N. Batta

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Diamond-like carbon sDLCd films were deposited on tungsten sWd tips under the KrF excimer laser in a laser chemical vapor deposition sLCVDd chamber. Raman spectroscopy showed that the deposited DLC films were phase-graded along the tips from the apexes. The DLC films were more diamondlike at or near the tip apexes. From numerical simulation, there is a strongly confined and enhanced optical field at the tip apexes. The simulation also indicates that there is an optical-field gradient from tip apexes to tip bodies. Therefore, the variations in the phases of deposited DLC films were attributed to the corresponding variations in …

Identification And Expression Analysis Of Two Inorganic C-And N-Responsive Genes Encoding Novel And Distinct Molecular Forms Of Eukaryotic Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase In The Green Microalga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Tarlan G. Mamedov, Eric R. Moellering, Raymond Chollet Mar 2005

Moellering, Raymond Chollet

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC [Ppc]) has been previously purified and characterized in biochemical and immunological terms from two green microalgae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Selenastrum minutum. The findings indicate that these algae possess at least two distinct PEPC enzyme-forms, homotetrameric Class1 and heteromeric Class-2 that differ significantly from each other and their plant and prokaryotic counterparts. Surprisingly, however, green-algal PEPC has been unexplored to date in molecular terms. This study reports the molecular cloning of the two Ppc genes in C. reinhardtii (CrPpc1, CrPpc2), each of which is transcribed in vivo and encodes a fully active, recombinant PEPC that lacks the regulatory, …

Asojo, Alex Lucas, Rick Barent, Jicai Huang, Brad Plantz, Amber Swanson, Mark Gouthro, Michael M. Meagher, Peter J. Hotez

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Human hookworm infection is a major cause of anemia and malnutrition in the developing world. In an effort to control hookworm infection, the Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative has identified candidate vaccine antigens from the infective larval stage (L3) of the parasite, including a family of pathogenesis related- 1 (PR-1) proteins known as the ancylostoma-secreted proteins (ASPs). The functions of the ASPs are unknown. In addition, it is unclear why some ASPs have one while others have multiple PR-1 domains. There are no known structures of a multi-domain ASP and in an effort to remedy this situation, recombinant Na …

Wave Attenuations In Solids With Perfectly Aligned Cracks, Liyong Yang, Joseph A. Turner Feb 2005

Wave Attenuations In Solids With Perfectly Aligned Cracks, Liyong Yang, Joseph A. Turner

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The theory of wave propagation and scattering in cracked media is applied to study the wave attenuations in an isotropic solid medium containing perfectly aligned penny-shaped microcracks. The unit normals of all cracks are assumed parallel to a given direction. The wave scattering model is formulated using an anisotropic Green’s dyadic approach. Explicit expressions are derived for attenuations of the three wave modes in terms of the microcrack density. Numerical results are presented and discussed. In particular, comparisons of the attenuation results presented in this letter with previous results for the Rayleigh limit are given.

The enzymatically catalyzed template-directed extension of ssDNA/primer complex is an impor-tant reaction of extraordinary complexity. The DNA polymerase does not merely facilitate the insertion of dNMP, but it also performs rapid screening of substrates to ensure a high degree of fidelity. Several kinetic studies have determined rate constants and equilibrium constants for the elementary steps that make up the overall pathway. The information is used to develop a macro-scopic kinetic model, using an approach described by Ninio [Ninio J., 1987. High-Anisotropy Nanocluster Films For High-Density Perpendicular Recording, David J. Sellmyer, Minglang Yan, Yinfan Xu, Ralph Skomski Feb 2005

High-Anisotropy Nanocluster Films For High-Density Perpendicular Recording, David J. Sellmyer, Minglang Yan, Yinfan Xu, Ralph Skomski

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

This paper reports results on the synthesis and magnetic properties of L10:X nanocomposite films, where L10 = FePt, CoPt, and X = C, Ag, etc. Two fabrication methods are discussed: nonepitaxial growth of oriented perpendicular media, and monodispersed nanoparticle-assembled films grown with a gas-aggregation source. The magnetic properties are controllable through variations in the nanocluster properties and nanostructure. The films show promise for development as recording media at extremely high areal densities.
