The Effective Magnetoelectroelastic Moduli Of Matrix-Based Multiferroic Composites, Shashidhar Srinivas, Jiangyu Li, Y.C. Zhou, A.K. Soh
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we develop a mean field Mori-Tanaka model [T. Mori and K. Tanaka, Acta. Metall. 21, 571 (1973)] to calculate the effective magnetoelectroelastic moduli of matrix-based multiferroic composites, emphasizing the effects of shape and orientation distribution of second phase particles that have not been investigated before. Through a systematic study, it is observed that laminated composites are optimal for magnetoelectric coefficient a11, while fibrous composites are optimal for a33. In addition, these coupling coefficients are maximum when the second phase particles are aligned. It is also postulated that the large discrepancy between theoretical predictions …

Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix
Papers in Sustainable Mining
Sustainable development integrates economic, environmental and social considerations in order to improve the lives of the current generation and ensure that future generations will have adequate resources and opportunities. Sustainable mining is not a new approach or concept in resource consumption. It is a holistic approach for dealing with a complex, interlinked set of factors that determine the net societal worth of a project. A holistic approach to phosphate beneficiation gives us opportunities for the improvement of economic results through reactant and waste minimization. It also gives direction for continued research thrusts to solve the problems associated with the clay …

Self-Consistent Local Gw Method: Application To 3D And 4D Metals, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov, N.E. Zein
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
The spectral densities for 3d and 4d transition metals are calculated using the simplified version of the self-consistent GW method employing the local (one-site) approximation and the self-consistent quasiparticle basis set. The results are compared with those given by the traditional local density approximation (LDA) and also with experimental x-ray photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra. While no systematic improvements over LDA are observed, this fully self-consistent many-body technique generates quite reasonable results and can serve as a practical prototype for further development of the many-body electronic structure theory.

Catalytical Growth Of Carbon Nanotubes/Fibers From Nanocatalysts Prepared By Laser Pulverization Of Nickel Sulfate, J. Shi, Yongfeng Lu, K. F. Tan, Xinwei Wang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Dispersed nickel sulfate (NiSO4) microclusters on Si substrates were fragmented by pulsed excimer laser irradiation to serve as catalysts for carbon nanotube/nanofiber (CNT/CNF) growth. At proper fluences, NiSO4 clusters were pulverized into nanoparticles. The sizes of clusters/nanoparticles were found to be dependent on laser fluence and laser pulse number. By increasing the laser fluence from 100 to 300 mJ/cm2, the size of disintegrated particles decreased drastically from several micrometers to several nanometers. It was found that laser-induced disintegration of as-dispersed NiSO4 clusters was mainly due to physical fragmentation by transient thermal expansion/ contraction. Thermal …

Vegetative Treatment Systems For Management Of Open Lot Runoff: Review Of Literature, Richard K. Koelsch, Jeffrey C. Lorimer, Kyle R. Mankin
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Runoff from open lot livestock systems (beef and dairy) defined as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) must be controlled by systems designed and managed to prevent the release of manure-contaminated runoff for storms equal to or less than a 25-yr, 24-h design storm. This performance standard has been attained for open lot systems with some combination of clean water diversion, settling basins, runoff collection ponds, and irrigation systems (baseline system).
An alternative approach is to rely on overland flow and infiltration into cropland with perennial forage or grasses for treatment of open lot runoff. Such vegetative systems have been researched …

Optimal Management Of Groundwater Over Space And Time, Nicholas Brozovic, David L. Sunding, David Zilberman
Optimal Management Of Groundwater Over Space And Time, Nicholas Brozovic, David L. Sunding, David Zilberman
Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
For nearly half a century, groundwater has been portrayed in the economic literature as a typical common property resource. Numerous studies of groundwater extraction have analyzed the externalities imposed by users on each other. A large body of work offers clear prescriptions in the form of optimal policy instruments, and a similarly large body of work advocates the needlessness of any centralized intervention. Yet existing theoretical models of groundwater extraction implicitly make two strong assumptions about the underlying behavior of the resource. First, the spatial distribution of resource users is assumed to be irrelevant. Second, path-independence of the resource is …

Trees And Ice Storms: The Development Of Ice Storm–Resistant Urban Tree Populations (Second Edition), Richard J. Hauer, Jeffrey O. Dawson, Les P. Werner
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Severe ice storms occur every year in the United States and Canada, particularly in the midwestern and eastern regions of the United States. Along with fires and wind, ice storms are a frequent and major natural disturbance factor in eastern deciduous forests. Likewise ice storms are responsible for deaths and injuries of people and cause dramatic damage and tree loss to urban forests. Ice storms annually result in millions of dollars in loss, and potentially billions of dollars in losses for extreme and widespread ice storms. Damage to electric distribution systems, blocked roadways, and property damage from fallen trees and …

Microscopic Reactive Diffusion Of Uranium In The Contaminated Sediments At Hanford, United States, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Wassana Yantasee, Paul D. Majors, James Mckinley
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses of uranium-contaminated sediments from select locations at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford site have revealed that sorbed uranium (U) often exists as uranyl precipitates associated with intragrain fractures of granitic clasts. The release of U to contacting fluids appears to be controlled by intragrain ion diffusion coupled with the dissolution kinetics of the precipitates that exist in the form of Na-boltwoodite. Here we present a coupled microscopic reactive diffusion model for the contaminated sediment on the basis of experimental measurements of intragrain diffusivity in the granitic lithic fragments and the dissolution kinetics of synthetic …

Reducing Long-Term Remedial Costs By Transport Modeling Optimization, David Becker, Barbara Minsker, Robert Greenwald, Yan Zhang, Karla Harre, Kathleen Yager, Chunmiao Zheng, Richard Peralta
United States Navy: Publications
The Department of Defense (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program and the Environmental Protection Agency sponsored a project to evaluate the benefits and utility of contaminant transport simulation-optimization algorithms against traditional (trial and error) modeling approaches. Three pump-and-treat facilities operated by the DoD were selected for inclusion in the project. Three optimization formulations were developed for each facility and solved independently by three modeling teams (two using simulation-optimization algorithms and one applying trial-and-error methods). The results clearly indicate that simulation-optimization methods are able to search a wider range of well locations and flow rates and identify better solutions than current …

Basic Materials Research Programs At The U.S. Air Force Office Of Scientific Research, Herbert C. Carlson, K. C. Goretta
United States Air Force: Publications
The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) annually sponsors approximately 5000 research scientists at 1000 universities and laboratories, generating about 10,000 Ph.D. graduates per decade, all expected to publish their basic research findings in peer-reviewed journals. After a brief introduction of the nature of AFOSR’s support to basic research in the U.S. and international scientific communities, work it supports at the frontiers of materials science is highlighted. One focused research theme that drives our investment is the MEANS program. It begins with the end in mind; materials are designed with practicable manufacture as an explicit initial goal. AFOSR’s broad …

United States Air Force: Publications
A time-resolved method for tip’ retraction at µs-scale away from dielectric surfaces has been developed. Analysis of the forces in the system comprising AFM tip, water meniscus, and polymer film suggests that an electrostatic repulsion of the tip from the surface in the double-layered (water and polymer) system, and water condensation in the tip–surface junction are the dominant factors enabling the mechanical work for tip retraction. Nanostructures of 5–80nm height are formed in polymeric surfaces as a result. This interesting physical phenomenon could be used for nanostructures patterning in polymeric materials at enhanced aspect ratio.

Effects, Transfer, And Fate Of Rdx From Aged Soil In Plants And Worms, E.P.H. Best, K.N. Geter, H.E. Tatem, B.K. Lane
United States Army: Publications
The objectives of this study were to provide data that can be used to predict exposure-based effects of RDX in aged soil on multiple endpoint organisms representing two trophic levels. These data can be used for defining criteria or reference values for environmental management and conducting specific risk assessment. Dose–response experiments formed the basis for the evaluation of toxic effects and transfer of contaminants from soil into two trophic levels. Long-term exposure tests were conducted to evaluate chronic, sublethal, toxicity and transfer of aged soil-based explosives, with RDX as main contaminant. In these tests, plants were exposed for 55 days …

United States Army: Publications
Environmental investigations have been conducted at 23 military firing ranges in the United States and Canada. The specific training facilities most frequently evaluated were hand grenade, antitank rocket, and artillery ranges. Energetic compounds (explosives and propellants) were determined and linked to the type of munition used and the major mechanisms of deposition.
The Dielectric Behavior Of Polycrystalline Ferroelectric Films With Fiber Textures, Quangen Du, Jiangyu Li, William Nothwang, Melanie W. Cole
The Dielectric Behavior Of Polycrystalline Ferroelectric Films With Fiber Textures, Quangen Du, Jiangyu Li, William Nothwang, Melanie W. Cole
United States Army: Publications
We consider the effects of crystallographic symmetry, texture, and internal strain on the dielectric properties of polycrystalline ferroelectric thin films with fiber textures, including spontaneous polarization, coercivity, dielectric constant, dielectric tunability, and strain-induced phase transition, by combining Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire phenomenological theory for ferroelectrics with the micromechanics theory for polycrystalline thin films. Cubic and tetragonal BaxSr1_xTiO3 (BST) films with [001] fiber texture, and cubic and rhombohedral BST films with [111] texture are considered. The results show that for [001]-textured film compressive strain enhances the spontaneous polarization, coercivity, and tunability while it decreases the dielectric constant; for [111]-textured film the effects are the …

Proposed Evaluation Of Switchgrass Selections For Caddo House Construction, Charles Allen, Sara Thames, Jim Grafton, Bill Welton, Lorene Williams, Katina Mcclure, Darryl Monteau, Phil Cross, Andrew Hamblin, William Meyer
United States Army: Publications
The Caddo Indian tribe’s range was northwest Louisiana, northeast Texas, eastern Oklahoma, western Arkansas, and southwest Missouri. Historical records indicate the use of native switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) in the construction of houses. The frame and stringers for the houses were wood but the entire covering was bundles of switchgrass. In 2005, Fort Polk personnel and faculty and students at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas initiated a joint monitoring effort of biological (density, height, seed production), cultural, and other characteristics of switchgrass. Both groups have ongoing field and greenhouse plots with selections of switchgrass from throughout the …
