More Carrot Than Stick: Encouraging Computer Programming In Thermal Design Projects, Kevin D. Cole Jan 2011

More Carrot Than Stick: Encouraging Computer Programming In Thermal Design Projects, Kevin D. Cole

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Students will do almost anything to avoid using thermal-property tables. In this paper, Matlab-based thermal-property software is described as an enticement for students to do computer programming in the design of thermal systems. Downloaded shareware was used for steam properties in a steam-cycle project, and an air-property package was developed for use with a gas-turbine project. Although the use of computer programming required considerable effort by both instructor and students, most students did gain a better appreciation of the utility of writing computer programs as part of engineering design. Student evaluations of the course were not significantly affected compared to …

Role Of Helmet In The Mechanics Of Shock Wave Propagation Under Blast Loading Conditions, Shailesh G. Ganpule, Linxia Gu, Aaron L. Alai, Namas Chandra Jan 2011

Role Of Helmet In The Mechanics Of Shock Wave Propagation Under Blast Loading Conditions, Shailesh G. Ganpule, Linxia Gu, Aaron L. Alai, Namas Chandra

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The effectiveness of helmets in extenuating the primary shock waves generated by the explosions of improvised explosive devices is not clearly understood. In this work, the role of helmet on the overpressurization and impulse experienced by the head were examined. The shock wave–head interactions were studied under three different cases: (i) unprotected head, (ii) head with helmet but with varying head–helmet gaps and (iii) head covered with helmet and tightly fitting foam pads. The intensification effect was discussed by examining the shock wave flow pattern and verified with experiments. A helmet with a better protection against shock wave is suggested.

Effects Of Mass Layer Nonuniformity On A Quartz-Crystal Microbalance, Nan Liu, Jiashi Yang, Weiqiu Chen Jan 2011

Effects Of Mass Layer Nonuniformity On A Quartz-Crystal Microbalance, Nan Liu, Jiashi Yang, Weiqiu Chen

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We study the effects of the nonuniform thickness of a thin mass layer on a quartz-crystal microbalance. A theoretical analysis is performed on thickness-shear (TSh) vibration of an AT-cut quartz plate with a nonuniform mass layer. Mindlin’s 2-D equation for TSh vibration of a quartz plate is used. An elliptical mass layer with stepped thickness is considered which allows an exact analysis based on the plate equation. Free vibration frequencies and modes are obtained. The effects of the mass layer nonuniformity are examined. Results show that a mass layer thicker at the center tends to confine more modes under the …

A Model Of Giant Vacuole Dynamics In Human Schlemm’S Canal Endothelial Cells, Ryan M. Pedrigi, David Simon, Ashley Reed, W. Daniel Stamer, Darryl R. Overby

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Aqueous humour transport across the inner wall endothelium of Schlemm’s canal likely involves flow through giant vacuoles and pores, but the mechanics of how these structures form and how they influence the regulation of intraocular pressure (IOP) are not well understood. In this study, we developed an in vitro model of giant vacuole formation in human Schlemm’s canal endothelial cells (HSCECs) perfused in the basal-to-apical direction (i.e., the direction that flow crosses the inner wall in vivo) under controlled pressure drops (2 or 6 mmHg). The system was mounted on a confocal microscope for time-lapse en face imaging, and cells …

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Truck-related crashes constitute a major safety concern for government agencies, the construction industry, and the traveling public. Due to the rising needs in highway maintenance and construction, the number of work zones is increasing throughout the United States, while at the same time freight movement using trucks is also increasing nationwide. Developing effective safety countermeasures to reduce the truck-related crashes is a major challenge in front of the government agencies and the construction industry. The main objectives of this research project are to discover truck-related crash characteristics and to model the truck speeds in the upstream of one-lane two-way rural …

Impact Of Truck Loading On Design And Analysis Of Asphaltic Pavement Structures- Phase Ii, Yong-Rak Kim, Hoki Ban, Soohyok Im .

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

In this study, Schapery’s nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model is implemented into the commercial finite element (FE) software ABAQUS via user defined subroutine (user material, or UMAT) to analyze asphalt pavement subjected to heavy truck loads. Then, extensive creep-recovery tests are conducted at various stress levels and at two temperatures (30oC and 40oC) to obtain the stress- and temperature-dependent viscoelastic material properties of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures. With the viscoelastic material properties characterized and the UMAT code, a typical pavement structure subjected to repeated heavy truck loads is modeled with the consideration of the effect of material nonlinearity with a …

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Driver behavior within the dilemma zone can be a major safety concern at high-speed signalized intersections. The Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) has developed and implemented an actuated advance warning (AAW) dilemma zone protection system. Although these systems have received positive reviews from the public—and commercial vehicle operators in particular—there has been no comprehensive analysis of their effects on safety and traffic operations. The focus of this research was to conduct a quantitative study to ascertain the efficacy of the NDOR advance warning system. First, crash records from before and after the implementation of the system at 26 intersections were …

Model For Predicting The Impact Upon Economic Development Resulting From Highway Improvement Projects, Eric Thompson, Kanou Comlavi, Mallory Dimmit

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

The Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) has an interest in integrating state economic development impact as another factor in prioritizing transportation investments. Such efforts require the development of a comprehensive model that can be used to estimate a consistent final measure of economic development impact that can be readily integrated into existing prioritization formulas. This report summarizes the efforts of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Bureau of Business Research (UNL-BBR) to develop such a model, by measuring the impact of expressway, viaduct, and other major investments projects around the state. Specifically, UNL-BBR developed an economic model to predict the economic impact …

Missouri Work Zone Capacity: Results Of Field Data Analysis, Ghulam Bham Ph.D., S. Hadi Khazraee

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

This report presents the results of work zone field data analyzed on interstate highways in Missouri to determine the mean breakdown and queue-discharge flow rates as measures of capacity. Several days of traffic data collected at a work zone near Pacific, Missouri with a speed limit of 50 mph were analyzed in both the eastbound and westbound directions. As a result, a total of eleven breakdown events were identified using average speed profiles. The traffic flows prior to and after the onset of congestion were studied. Breakdown flow rates ranged between 1194 to 1404 vphpl, with an average of 1295 …

Roadside Grading Guidance - Phase I, Kevin D. Schrum, Francisco D. B. Albuquerque, Dean L. Sicking, Ronald K. Faller, John D. Reid Jan 2011

Roadside Grading Guidance - Phase I, Kevin D. Schrum, Francisco D. B. Albuquerque, Dean L. Sicking, Ronald K. Faller, John D. Reid

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Provisions for the design of roadside foreslopes are not readily available. As a result, engineering judgment is often employed. Unfortunately, this can lead to inconsistent designs, where, inevitably, some designs will be too costly and other designs will be too dangerous. Therefore guidance has been compiled to lend consistency to the design of these foreslopes while maintaining the most economical and safe design.

This guidance was prepared after conducting a benefit-cost analysis using the Roadside Safety Analysis Program (RSAP). A large test matrix was developed in an attempt to simulate the most possible scenarios, leaving interpolation to a minimum. However, …

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

In this study we use the 500 m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) product to develop multivariate linear regression models that estimate canopy heights over study sites at Howland Forest, Maine, Harvard Forest, Massachusetts and La Selva Forest, Costa Rica using (1) directional escape probabilities that are spectrally independent and (2) the directional spectral reflectances used to derive the directional escape probabilities. These measures of canopy architecture are compared with canopy height information retrieved from the airborne Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS). Both the escape probability and the directional reflectance approaches achieve good results, with …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A combination of analytical techniques, with special emphasis on selective area Stokes polarimetry, has been used to explore the structural properties and magnetic behavior of focused ion beam patterned Fe thin films under controlled Ga+ ion irradiation. Ion irradiation at doses ranging from 7.7×1015 to 5.2×1016 Ga ions cm-2 did not noticeably alter the chemical properties of the Fe, but changes to the film structure and increased coercivity were observed even after the lowest doses. Magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy provided detailed information about the magnetization reversal process occurring within a patterned area of film comprising both …

Error Analysis Of Large-Eddy Simulation Of The Turbulent Non-Premixed Sydney Bluff-Body Flame, A. M. Kempf, B. J. Geurts, J. C, Oefelein Jan 2011

Error Analysis Of Large-Eddy Simulation Of The Turbulent Non-Premixed Sydney Bluff-Body Flame, A. M. Kempf, B. J. Geurts, J. C, Oefelein

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A computational error analysis is applied to the large-eddy simulation of the turbulent non-premixed Sydney bluff-body flame, where the error is defined with respect to experimental data. The errorlandscape approach is extended to heterogeneous compressible turbulence, which is coupled to combustion as described by a flamelet model. The Smagorinsky model formulation is used to model the unknown turbulent stresses. We introduce several measures to quantify the total simulation error and observe a striking ‘valley-structure’ in the error that arises as function of the spatial resolution and the Smagorinsky length parameter. The optimal refinement strategy that can be extracted from this …

Combining Power Plant Water Needs And Carbon Dioxide Storage Using Saline Formations: Implications For Carbon Dioxide And Water Management Policies, Peter Kobos, Malynda Cappelle, Jim Krumhansl, Thomas Dewers, Andrea Mcnemar, David Borns Jan 2011

Combining Power Plant Water Needs And Carbon Dioxide Storage Using Saline Formations: Implications For Carbon Dioxide And Water Management Policies, Peter Kobos, Malynda Cappelle, Jim Krumhansl, Thomas Dewers, Andrea Mcnemar, David Borns

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Research involving management of carbon dioxide has increased markedly over the last decade as it relates to concerns over climate change. Capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) in geological formations is one of many proposed methods to manage, and likely reduce, CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels in the electricity sector. Saline formations represent a vast storage resource, and the waters they contain could be managed for beneficial use. To address this issue, a methodology was developed to test the feasibility of linking coal-fired power plants, deep saline formations for CO2 storage, and extracting and treating …

Nonlocal Instability Analysis Of Fcc Bulk And (100) Surfaces Under Uniaxial Stretching, Geng Yun, Penghui Cao, Jonathan Zimmerman, Terry Delph, Harold Park Jan 2011

Nonlocal Instability Analysis Of Fcc Bulk And (100) Surfaces Under Uniaxial Stretching, Geng Yun, Penghui Cao, Jonathan Zimmerman, Terry Delph, Harold Park

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The objective of this paper is to examine the instability characteristics of both a bulk FCC crystal and a (100) surface of an FCC crystal under uniaxial stretching along a h100i direction using an atomisticbased nonlocal instability criterion. By comparison to benchmark atomistic simulations, we demonstrate that for both the FCC bulk and (100) surface, about 5000–10,000 atoms are required in order to obtain an accurate converged value for the instability strain and a converged instability mode. The instability modes are fundamentally different at the surface as compared to the bulk, but in both cases a strong dependence of the …
