Decaf: A New Event Detection Logic For The Purpose Of Fusing Delineated-Continuous Spatial Information, Kerry Q. Hart May 2014

Decaf: A New Event Detection Logic For The Purpose Of Fusing Delineated-Continuous Spatial Information, Kerry Q. Hart

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Geospatial information fusion is the process of synthesizing information from complementary data sources located at different points in space and time. Spatial phenomena are often measured at discrete locations by sensor networks, technicians, and volunteers; yet decisions often require information about locations where direct measurements do not exist. Traditional methods assume the spatial phenomena to be either discrete or continuous, an assumption that underlies and informs all subsequent analysis. Yet certain phenomena defy this dichotomy, alternating as they move across spatial and temporal scales. Precipitation, for example, appears continuous at large scales, but it can be temporally decomposed into discrete …

The overall goal of the project is to increase the understanding of the public health risk associated with the use of treated wastewater to irrigate food crops. The objective of this particular study is to determine the antibiotic resistance level of Salmonella internalized in lettuce leaves. In this experiment, thirty-six plants of the lettuce …

Security Analysis Of Phasor Measurement Units In Smart Grid Communication Infrastructures, Mehrnaz Sharifian May 2014

Security Analysis Of Phasor Measurement Units In Smart Grid Communication Infrastructures, Mehrnaz Sharifian

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), or synchrophasors, are rapidly being deployed in the smart grid with the goal of measuring phasor quantities concurrently from wide area distribution substations. By utilizing GPS receivers, PMUs can take a wide area snapshot of power systems. Thus, the possibility of blackouts in the smart grid, the next generation power grid, will be reduced. As the main enabler of Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS), PMUs transmit measured values to Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs) by the synchrophasor standard IEEE C37.118. IEC 61850 and IEC 62351 are the communication protocols for the substation automation system and the security …

Using A Uav To Effectively Prolong Wireless Sensor Network Lifetime With Wireless Power Transfer, Jinfu Leng May 2014

Using A Uav To Effectively Prolong Wireless Sensor Network Lifetime With Wireless Power Transfer, Jinfu Leng

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Wireless sensor networks are widely used for everything from border security to monitoring waterway pollution. Supplying energy for long term deployment is a main challenge in the applications of wireless sensor networks, as batteries are the primary energy source. Current wireless sensor networks deployed for long periods either require additional infrastructure, such as solar panels, or periodic maintenance. Our research lab has proposed a novel solution that uses a micro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to wirelessly charge the sensor nodes and prolong the sensor network lifetime. Recent studies have shown that significant power can be transferred wirelessly over medium distances. …

Dnn: A Distributed Namenode Filesystem For Hadoop, Ziling Huang May 2014

Dnn: A Distributed Namenode Filesystem For Hadoop, Ziling Huang

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is the distributed storage infrastructure for the Hadoop big-data analytics ecosystem. A single node, called the NameNode of HDFS stores the metadata of the entire file system and coordinates the file content placement and retrieval actions of the data storage subsystems, called DataNodes. However the single NameNode architecture has long been viewed as the Achilles' heel of the Hadoop Distributed file system, as it not only represents a single point of failure, but also limits the scalability of the storage tier in the system stack. Since Hadoop is now being deployed at increasing scale, …

Starch-Pectin Matrices For Encapsulation Of Ascorbic Acid, Yiwei Liu May 2014

Starch-Pectin Matrices For Encapsulation Of Ascorbic Acid, Yiwei Liu

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Starch and pectin are two food-grade carbohydrates widely utilized in the food industry. Starch and pectin polymers have been investigated in encapsulating functional food ingredients and in pharmaceutical applications. Resistance to enzyme hydrolysis, differential solubilities, depending on the pH, and the ability to ‘protect’ unstable molecules are considered some of the beneficial properties of starch and pectin polymers, for encapsulation applications. Food ingredients could be delivered in a controlled manner to a specific target by encapsulating in micro-scale particles, i. e., microencapsulation. Two studies were conducted to investigate the ability of selected starch-pectin blends in microencapsulating ascorbic acid (vitamin C) …

Response Of Large River Fishes To A Prolonged High Water Event In The Missouri River, Nebraska, Nicholas Paul Hogberg May 2014

Response Of Large River Fishes To A Prolonged High Water Event In The Missouri River, Nebraska, Nicholas Paul Hogberg

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Regulation and modification of large rivers to accommodate human uses have been a root cause of freshwater biodiversity declines. The Missouri River is among the most drastically-altered large river systems in North America, with a series of mainstem impoundments in the upper watershed altering flow characteristics downstream, and channelization throughout the lower river homogenizing instream habitat and reducing off-channel habitat. Precipitation events during the winter and spring 2010-2011 caused flooding of the greatest magnitude and duration since reservoir completion. The large magnitude and long duration of this flood made it unlike any flood in recent history and provided a unique …

Variable Bounds Analysis Of A Climate Model Using Software Verification Techniques, Peter Revesz, Robert Woodward May 2014

Variable Bounds Analysis Of A Climate Model Using Software Verification Techniques, Peter Revesz, Robert Woodward

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Software verification techniques often use some approximation method that identifies the limits of the possible range of values that variables in a computer program can take during execution. Current climate models are complex computer programs that are typically iterated time-step by time-step to predict the next value of the climate-related variables. Because these iterative methods are necessarily computed only for a fixed number of iterations, they are unable to answer many long-range questions that may be posed regarding climate change, for example, whether there are natural fluctuations or whether a tipping point is reached after which there is no return …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Technology implementation in agricultural water management can significantly enhance crop water productivity and result in soil, water, and energy conservation. Over the years a number of newer and cost-effective technologies/tools have been developed to measure soil water status. Deciding which technique should be used depends on the purpose of the measurements, soil and crop conditions, desired accuracy, cost and durability of the sensor, ease of operation and interpretation of the data, and other factors.

This Extension Circular defines soil matric potential and describes principles and operational characteristics of one of the electrical resistance-type soil moisture sensors for irrigation management. It …

Theoretical Modeling Of Laser-Induced Absorption Phenomena In Optical Materials, Chris Ferris May 2014

Theoretical Modeling Of Laser-Induced Absorption Phenomena In Optical Materials, Chris Ferris

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

For over five decades, laser-induced damage and breakdown in optical materials has been an active field of research. As laser systems continually advance, new opportunities to study laser/material interactions arise. This thesis begins by presenting the damage mechanisms and absorption phenomena that lead to laser-induced breakdown. An in depth understanding of these processes led to the development of rate equations that describe electron density growth in a material exposed to a strong electromagnetic wave. These rate equations laid the foundation for the construction of a theoretical model. By using variable laser and material parameter inputs, the model calculates the laser-induced …

Analysis, Optimization, And Implementation Of A Uav-Based Wireless Power Transfer System, Andrew Mittleider May 2014

Analysis, Optimization, And Implementation Of A Uav-Based Wireless Power Transfer System, Andrew Mittleider

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Wireless power transfer is rapidly advancing in its ability to efficiently transfer power to a variety of devices.

As the efficiency increases, more applications for these systems arise. Since magnetic resonant wireless power transfer can only transfer a small amount of power, most current applications only focus on powering low-powered devices.

Wireless Sensor Networks are composed of many low-powered nodes which currently require human interaction to remain powered. We propose recharging a low-powered Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) with a magnetic resonant wireless power transfer system attached to a quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

This thesis addresses three main challenges with …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is an increasing interest in developing desirable microstructures in hard magnetic materials. Sm-Co-based magnets, bearing superior intrinsic magnetic properties, are good candidates for further development. Two Sm-Co-based alloys, (Sm12Co88)100-x-yCryCx (taking SmCo7 phase) and SmCo4-xFexB (a derivative of SmCo5 phase), were produced using melt-spinning technique. The magnetic properties are correlated to the structural and microstructural properties.

Within the SmCo7 stoichiometry, cumulative effects of Cr and C additions on the structural and magnetic properties have been investigated. Experimental results have shown that these additions along …

Design And Assembly Of Parabolic Flight Payload To Evaluate Miniature In Vivo Surgical Robots In Microgravity, Kearney M. Lackas May 2014

Design And Assembly Of Parabolic Flight Payload To Evaluate Miniature In Vivo Surgical Robots In Microgravity, Kearney M. Lackas

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery (MIS), changed the face of surgery in the 1990s. With these procedures, surgeons use long, slender tools which pass through several small incisions. Performing surgery in this fashion has shown many benefits including reduced pain and recovery times, lower costs, and less scarring post-recovery.

The use of surgical robotics has shown several key advantages over MIS techniques. Minimally invasive surgeries typically require unnatural movements, have limited visibility, greatly reduce dexterity, and provide little tactile feedback. Through robot kinematics and specialized sensors, surgical robots can resolve many of these limitations, especially in terms …

Application Of Limited Mixing In The Hele–Shaw Geometry In Fabrication Of Janus Hydrogels, Md Mahmudur Rahman Apr 2014

Application Of Limited Mixing In The Hele–Shaw Geometry In Fabrication Of Janus Hydrogels, Md Mahmudur Rahman

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

It is widely accepted that cells behave differently responding to the stiffness of their extracellular matrix (ECM). Such observations were made by culturing cells on hydrogel substrates of tunable stiffness. However, it was recently proposed that cells may sense how strongly they are tethered to ECM, not the local stiffness of ECM. To investigate both hypotheses, we developed a method to fabricate Janus polyacrylamide (PAAM) gels. We squeeze two drops of different concentrations in the Hele-Shaw geometry to generate radial Stokes flow. When the drops coalesce, limited mixing occurs at the interface due to the narrow confinement, and diffusion normal …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Powdery mildew, caused by the fungus Blumeria graminis, is a major winter wheat disease in China. Accurate delineation of powdery mildew infestations is necessary for site-specific disease management. In this study, high-resolution multispectral imagery of a 25 km2 typical outbreak site in Shaanxi, China, taken by a newly-launched satellite, SPOT-6, was analyzed for mapping powdery mildew disease. Two regions with high representation were selected for conducting a field survey of powdery mildew. Three supervised classification methods—artificial neural network, mahalanobis distance, and maximum likelihood classifier—were implemented and compared for their performance on disease detection. The accuracy assessment showed that the ANN …

A New Spatio-Temporal Data Mining Method And Its Application To Reservoir System Operation, Abhinaya Mohan Apr 2014

A New Spatio-Temporal Data Mining Method And Its Application To Reservoir System Operation, Abhinaya Mohan

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis develops a spatio-temporal data mining method for uncertain water reservoir data. The goal of the data mining method is to learn from a history human reservoir operations in order to derive an automated controller for a reservoir system. Spatio-temporal data mining is a challenging task due to the reasons: (1) spatio-temporal datasets are usually much larger than spatial data sets, (2) many common spatial techniques are unable to deal with objects that change location, size or shape, and (3) complex and often non-linear spatio-temporal relationships cannot be separated into pure spatial and pure temporal relationships.

Characterization Of Extraction Methods To Recover Phenolic-Rich Antioxidants From Blue Green Algae (Spirulina) Using Response Surface Approaches, Ahmad Salamatullah

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Blue green algae (spirulina) is a dietary system that is widely consumed as a whole food or as a supplement in many Asian countries where populations are mostly unaffected by many of the diseases currently afflicting western societies, such as cancer, heart disease and arthiritis. Indeed, spirulina is a rich source of antioxidants with the phenolic compounds playing a significant role. As components of a complex dietary system, phenolic compounds can act alone or through synergistic mechanisms to impart a greater biologic effect than can be elicited by a sum of the individual parts. Therefore, an understanding of the antioxidative …

The aerial water sampler has the potential to vastly increase the speed and range at which scientists obtain water samples while reducing cost and effort. The water sampling system includes: 1) a mechanism to capture three 20 ml samples per mission; 2) sensors and algorithms for safe navigation and altitude approximation over water; and 3) software components that integrate and …

Development Of A Mash Tl-3 Transition Between Guardrail And Portable Concrete Barriers, David A. Gutierrez Apr 2014

Development Of A Mash Tl-3 Transition Between Guardrail And Portable Concrete Barriers, David A. Gutierrez

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Often, road construction causes the need to create a work zone. In these scenarios, portable concrete barriers (PCBs) are typically installed to shield workers and equipment from errant vehicles as well as prevent motorists from striking other roadside hazards. For an existing W-beam guardrail system installed adjacent to the roadway and near the work zone, guardrail sections are removed in order to place the portable concrete barrier system. The focus of this research study was to develop a proper stiffness transition between W-beam guardrail and portable concrete barrier systems. This research effort was accomplished through development and refinement of design …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Flame-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was investigated to improve the sensitivity of LIBS. It was realized by generating laser-induced plasmas in the blue outer envelope of a neutral oxy-acetylene flame. Fast imaging and temporally resolved spectroscopy of the plasmas were carried out. Enhanced intensity of up to 4 times and narrowed full width at half maximum (FWHM) down to 60% for emission lines were observed. Electron temperatures and densities were calculated to investigate the flame effects on plasma evolution. These calculated electron temperatures and densities showed that high-temperature and low-density plasmas were achieved before 4 μs in the flame environment, …

Determining The Dynamics Of Agricultural Water Use: Cases From Asia And Africa, Lisa-Maria Rebelo, Robyn Johnston, Poolad Karimi, Peter G. Mccornick

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Across Africa and Asia, water resources are being affected by a complex mixture of social, economic, and environmental factors. These include climate change and population growth, food prices, oil prices, financial disruptions, and political fluctuations. The need to produce more food will have one of the largest impacts on water and will continue to reshape the patterns of agricultural water use in major food-growing regions. With this increasing demand on water for agriculture, from large-scale irrigation to intensification of rainfed systems, it is becoming increasingly important to ensure that water resources decision-making has access to information that captures the spectrum …

Development And Utilization Of A Pair Of Sol-Gel Entrapped Lipases For Biodiesel Production From High Free Fatty Acid Oils, Cory M. Schwartz Apr 2014

Development And Utilization Of A Pair Of Sol-Gel Entrapped Lipases For Biodiesel Production From High Free Fatty Acid Oils, Cory M. Schwartz

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Biodiesel, which consists of fatty acid alkyl esters, is one of the most widely adopted and successful renewable fuels. Traditional physiochemical biodiesel production methods require high cost refined feedstocks, and so alternative methods of catalysis and feedstocks have been explored. This research investigated the use of polysiloxane entrapped lipases to catalyze the production of biodiesel from low cost feedstocks.

In this work, lipase from Burkholderia cepacia (lipase PS) and lipase B from Candida antarctica (CalB) were separately entrapped using sol-gel chemistry. Optimal reaction conditions for the esterification of free fatty acids by immobilized CalB with methanol were determined. Immobilized CalB …
