Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang
Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Al 7050-T7451 alloy with good combinations of strength, stress corrosion cracking resistance and toughness, is used broadly in the aerospace/aviation industry for fatigue-critical airframe structural components. However, it is also considered as a highly anisotropic alloy as the crack growth behavior along the short transverse direction is very different from the one in the long transverse direction, due to the inhomogeneous microstructure with the elongated grains distributed in the work material used in the sheet/plate applications. Further processes on these materials are needed to improve its mechanical and material properties and broaden its applications.
The material with ultra-fine or nano …

Kinetics Of Molten Metal Capillary Flow In Non-Reactive And Reactive Systems, Hai Fu
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Wetting and spreading of liquid systems on solid substrates under transient conditions, driven by surface tension and viscous forces along with the interface interactions (e.g., a substrate dissolution or diffusion and/or chemical reaction) is a complex problem, still waiting to be fully understood. In this study we have performed an extensive experimental investigation of liquid aluminum alloy spreading over aluminum substrate along with corroboration with theoretical modeling, performed in separate but coordinate study. Wetting and spreading to be considered take place during a transient formation of the free liquid surface in both sessile drop and wedge-tee mating surfaces’ configurations. The …

Biventricular Finite Element Modeling And Quantification Of 3d Langragian Strains And Torsion Using Dense Mri, Zhanqiu Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Statistical data suggests that increased use of evidence-based medical therapies has largely contributed to the decrease in American death rate caused by heart disease. And my studies are about two applications of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a non-invasive approach in evidence-based health care research. In my first study, the achievement of a pulmonary valve replacement surgery was assessed on a patient with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). In order to evaluate the remodeling of right ventricle, two biventricular finite element models were built up for pre-surgical images and post-surgical images. In my second study, 3D Lagrangian strains and torsion in …
Diffusion-Mediated Deposition Of Proteins, Ruiqian Zhan
Diffusion-Mediated Deposition Of Proteins, Ruiqian Zhan
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Gradients of proteins play a prominent role in many biological processes, from development of multicellular organisms to chemical signaling in the immune system. Deposition of surface gradients is a way to permanently modifying a surface’s properties, resulting in the creation of novel materials which have widespread applications in biologically relevant fields, such as directed cell growth, production of biocompatible implantable materials, and creation of functional biosensors. These types of surfaces can also be used as an ex vivo tool to help understand many biological processes by mimicking the environment in gradient-related phenomena in a controllable way. However, despite the large …

Comparisons Of Ablator Experimental Performance To Response Modeling And Effects Of Water Phase Transition In Porous Tps Materials, David L. Smith
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The Mars Science Laboratory Entry Descent and Landing Instrumentation (MEDLI) project performed extensive arc jet tests for development, qualification, and calibration of instrumented heat shield plugs. These plugs each contained several thermocouples for recording near-surface and in-depth temperature response of the Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA) heat shield. The arc jet test results are entered into a comprehensive database so that broad trends across the test series can be compared. One method of analysis is to compare with ablator material response calculations and solve the in-depth heat conduction equations. Using the near-surface thermocouple measurements as a boundary condition in numerical …

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
An unmanned aerial vehicle was developed to study turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. The development of the aircraft, BLUECAT5, and instrumentation package culminated in a series of flight experiments conducted in two different locations near Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA. The flight experiments employed the use of two of the unmanned aerial vehicles flying simultaneously, each containing a five-hole pressure probe as part of a turbulence-measuring instrumentation package. A total of 18 flights were completed with the objective to measure atmospheric properties at five altitudes between 20 and 120 meters. Multiple flights were flown over two days in which the effects …
Development And Application Of Gadolinium Free Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Fibrosis Imaging For Multiscale Study Of Heart Failure In Patients With End Stage Renal Disease, Tori A. Stromp
Theses and Dissertations--Physiology
Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is a powerful tool to noninvasively image ventricular fibrosis. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) CMR identifies focal and, with T1 mapping, diffuse fibrosis. Despite prevalent cardiac fibrosis and heart failure, patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) are excluded from LGE. Absence of a suitable diagnostic has limited the understanding of heart failure and obstructed development of therapies in the setting of ESRD. A quantitative, gadolinium free fibrosis detection method could overcome this critical barrier, propelling the advancement of diagnostic, monitoring, and therapy options. This project describes the development of a gadolinium free CMR technique and application …
Automated Solid-Substrate Cultivation Of The Anaerobic Bacterium Clostridium Thermocellum, Mathew J. Ruwaya
Automated Solid-Substrate Cultivation Of The Anaerobic Bacterium Clostridium Thermocellum, Mathew J. Ruwaya
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The organism Clostridium thermocellum grows on cellulosic substrates and produces ethanol, acetate, lactate, formic acid, and CO2. The organic acids produced alter the growth environment in which the bacteria grows and ultimately inhibit bacterial growth. One method which has been used successfully to maintain the system at acceptable growth conditions is to intermittently flush out the spent media and metabolic products and replace with new fermentation media. Our goal was to design and build an automated system that will automatically flush the spent media from the growing culture and resupply new media without manual intervention. An automated control …

This thesis describes the Drag language. Drag is a general purpose, gradually typed, lexically scoped, and multi-paradigm pro- gramming language. The essence of Drag is to build the abstract syntax trees of the programs directly and interactively. Our work includes the language specification and a prototype program. The language specification focuses on the syntax, the semantic model, and the type system. The prototype consists of an interactive editor and a compiler that targets several plat- forms, among which we focus on the LLVM platform in this thesis.
Understanding Home Networks With Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Passive Measurement, Xuzi Zhou
Understanding Home Networks With Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Passive Measurement, Xuzi Zhou
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Homes are involved in a significant fraction of Internet traffic. However, meaningful and comprehensive information on the structure and use of home networks is still hard to obtain. The two main challenges in collecting such information are the lack of measurement infrastructure in the home network environment and individuals’ concerns about information privacy.
To tackle these challenges, the dissertation introduces Home Network Flow Logger (HNFL) to bring lightweight privacy-preserving passive measurement to home networks. The core of HNFL is a Linux kernel module that runs on resource-constrained commodity home routers to collect network traffic data from raw packets. Unlike prior …
Routing And Security In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Baban A. Mahmood
Routing And Security In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Baban A. Mahmood
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) consists of a set of nodes which can form a network among themselves. MANETs have applications in areas such as military, disaster rescue operations, monitoring animal habitats, etc. where establishing fixed communication infrastructure is not feasible. Routing protocols designed for MANETs can be broadly classified as position-based (geographic), topology-based and hybrid. Geographic routing uses location information of nodes to route messages. Topology-based routing uses network state information for route discovery and maintenance. Hybrid routing protocols use features in both position-based and topology-based approaches. Position-based routing protocols route packets towards the destination using greedy forwarding …
Quasi-Magnetostatic Field Modeling Of Ships In The Presence Of Dynamic Sea Waves, Cody Lonsbury
Quasi-Magnetostatic Field Modeling Of Ships In The Presence Of Dynamic Sea Waves, Cody Lonsbury
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Mechanical stresses placed on ferromagnetic materials while under the influence of a magnetic field are known to cause changes to the permanent magnetization of the material. Modeling this phenomenon is vital to the safety of ocean faring ships. In this thesis, a quasi-strip theory method of computing the nonlinear wave induced motion of a ship is developed, and the fluid pressure on the surface of the hull is used to determine the mechanical stresses. An existing magnetostatic volume integral equation code is used to evaluate the effects of the ship motion and hull stresses. The resulting changes in the magnetic …

Information-Theoretic Secure Outsourced Computation In Distributed Systems, Zhaohong Wang
Information-Theoretic Secure Outsourced Computation In Distributed Systems, Zhaohong Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Secure multi-party computation (secure MPC) has been established as the de facto paradigm for protecting privacy in distributed computation. One of the earliest secure MPC primitives is the Shamir's secret sharing (SSS) scheme. SSS has many advantages over other popular secure MPC primitives like garbled circuits (GC) -- it provides information-theoretic security guarantee, requires no complex long-integer operations, and often leads to more efficient protocols. Nonetheless, SSS receives less attention in the signal processing community because SSS requires a larger number of honest participants, making it prone to collusion attacks. In this dissertation, I propose an agent-based computing framework using …

Hybrid Diesel-Electric Drivetrain For Small Agricultural Field Machines, Joseph Jackson, Joseph S. Dvorak
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
In this project, a series electric drivetrain sized for small agricultural machinery was developed and tested. Electric drives have noted benefits in simplicity, controllability, integration with other electronics such as those that provide autonomous action, and in efficiency over a wide operating range. Their biggest drawback for agricultural use is the limited capacity of electrical energy storage. A series hybrid drivetrain provides a method to overcome these capacity constraints through the use of chemical energy storage. The series hybrid drivetrain in this research was designed using well-established components. It consisted of a diesel-electric generator, a lead acid battery pack, a …

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
This study looked at the effects of an experiential learning activity using the accelerometer in the Wii Remote to teach basic concepts of Newtonian mechanics, e.g., acceleration, to middle school students in a rural school district. A major prerequisite for students at the mid-level in biosystems engineering programs is that they have a good knowledge of basic science, including physics. Education in these concepts must begin before college, such as at the middle school level. Improvements in science education are vitally necessary to achieve essential learning outcomes for middle school students in the U.S. and to prepare these students for …

Effects Of Chemical Amendments To Swine Manure On Runoff Quality, Elizabeth L. Bullock, Dwayne R. Edwards, Phillip A. Moore Jr., Richard S. Gates
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Land-applied swine manure can be an environmental concern when runoff losses of manure constituents occur. The use of chemical amendments to mitigate these losses has been investigated for poultry litter, but materials such as swine manure have received less attention in this context, particularly at the plot scale or larger. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the impacts of aluminum sulfate (alum; Al2(SO4)3), aluminum chloride (AlCl3), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) addition on runoff of selected constituents of land-applied swine manure. Manure was collected from feeder pigs fed a …
Methods For Calculating Relative Cross-Track Error For Asabe/Iso Standard 12188-2 From Discrete Measurements, Joseph D. Rounsaville, Joseph S. Dvorak, Timothy S. Stombaugh
Methods For Calculating Relative Cross-Track Error For Asabe/Iso Standard 12188-2 From Discrete Measurements, Joseph D. Rounsaville, Joseph S. Dvorak, Timothy S. Stombaugh
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
ASABE/ISO Standard 12188-2 provides test procedures for positioning and guidance systems in agricultural vehicles during straight and level travel. While the standard provides excellent descriptions of test procedures, it does not provide detail on methods to carry out the calculations necessary to calculate relative cross-track error (XTE), which is the primary error statistic used to judge accuracy. Given the travel speed and sampling constraints provided by the standard, the difference between a method based on nearest points or one based on path interpolation could hypothetically be as large as 25 cm. In this project, the standard was used to estimate …

A Lithium Battery Current Estimation Technique Using An Unknown Input Observer, Daniel Cambron
A Lithium Battery Current Estimation Technique Using An Unknown Input Observer, Daniel Cambron
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Current consumption measurements are useful in a wide variety of applications, including power monitoring and fault detection within a lithium battery management system (BMS). This measurement is typically taken using either a shunt resistor or a Hall-effect current transducer. Although both methods have achieved accurate current measurements, shunt resistors have inherent power loss and often require isolation circuitry, and Hall-effect sensors are generally expensive. This work explores a novel alternative to sensing battery current by measuring terminal voltages and cell temperatures and using an unknown input observer (UIO) to estimate the battery current. An accurate model of a LiFePO4 …

Modelling Of The Nanowire Cds-Cdte Device Design For Enhanced Quantum Efficiency In Window-Absorber Type Solar Cells, Rasika Ganvir
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Numerical simulations of current-voltage characteristics of nanowire CdS/CdTe solar cells are performed as a function of temperature using SCAPS-1D. This research compares the experimental current-voltage (I-V) characteristics with the numerical (I-V) simulations obtained from SCAPS-1D at various temperatures. Various device parameters were studied which can affect the efficiency of the nanowire-CdS/CdTe solar cell. It was observed that the present simulated model explains the important effects of these solar cell devices, such as the crossover and the rollover effect. It was shown that the removal of defect in i-SnO2 is responsible for producing the crossover effect. In the past, the rollover …
A Modular Electrical Power System Architecture For Small Spacecraft, Timothy M. Lim
A Modular Electrical Power System Architecture For Small Spacecraft, Timothy M. Lim
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Small satellites and CubeSats have established themselves within the aerospace community because of their low cost and high return on investment. Many CubeSats are developed in a short time frame and often leverage commercial off the shelf components for quick turnaround missions. With regard to the Electrical Power System, commercially available products typically use a centralized architecture. However, a centralized architecture is not reusable, since missions that require additional solar arrays or batteries would necessitate a redesign of the power system. With the range of CubeSat sizes and mission goals, it is obvious that a one-size-fits-all solution is not appropriate. …
Analysis Of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High Speed Video, Harikrishnan Unnikrishnan
Analysis Of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High Speed Video, Harikrishnan Unnikrishnan
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Vocal folds are the twin in-folding of the mucous membrane stretched horizontally across the larynx. They vibrate modulating the constant air flow initiated from the lungs. The pulsating pressure wave blowing through the glottis is thus the source for voiced speech production. Study of vocal fold dynamics during voicing are critical for the treatment of voice pathologies. Since the vocal folds move at 100 - 350 cycles per second, their visual inspection is currently done by strobosocopy which merges information from multiple cycles to present an apparent motion. High Speed Digital Laryngeal Imaging(HSDLI) with a temporal resolution of up to …
Robust Background Subtraction For Moving Cameras And Their Applications In Ego-Vision Systems, Hasan Sajid
Robust Background Subtraction For Moving Cameras And Their Applications In Ego-Vision Systems, Hasan Sajid
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Background subtraction is the algorithmic process that segments out the region of interest often known as foreground from the background. Extensive literature and numerous algorithms exist in this domain, but most research have focused on videos captured by static cameras. The proliferation of portable platforms equipped with cameras has resulted in a large amount of video data being generated from moving cameras. This motivates the need for foundational algorithms for foreground/background segmentation in videos from moving cameras. In this dissertation, I propose three new types of background subtraction algorithms for moving cameras based on appearance, motion, and a combination of …

Visual bubble is a virtual zone centered around the camera for observation whereas the rest of the environment and people are obfuscated. In contrast to most existing visual privacy …
Market Based Control Of Pv Inverters In A Distribution System, Kumar Rishikesh
Market Based Control Of Pv Inverters In A Distribution System, Kumar Rishikesh
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
A growing energy crisis, a rapid climate change, and a constant depletion of fossil fuel necessitates the role of renewable energy resources like PV (Photovoltaics) and wind energy to form a group of distributed sources of generation. These circumstances promote the use of renewable resources meeting the environmental commitments in terms of checking pollution and toxic footprints. A group of PV and wind energy generation units may work together as micro players to form smart grid systems and participate in an existing distribution system to meet a portion of the daily energy demand. This will help in minimizing the network …
Per-Pixel Calibration For Rgb-Depth Natural 3d Reconstruction On Gpu, Sen Li
Per-Pixel Calibration For Rgb-Depth Natural 3d Reconstruction On Gpu, Sen Li
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Ever since the Kinect brought low-cost depth cameras into consumer market, great interest has been invigorated into Red-Green-Blue-Depth (RGBD) sensors. Without calibration, a RGBD camera’s horizontal and vertical field of view (FoV) could help generate 3D reconstruction in camera space naturally on graphics processing unit (GPU), which however is badly deformed by the lens distortions and imperfect depth resolution (depth distortion). The camera’s calibration based on a pinhole-camera model and a high-order distortion removal model requires a lot of calculations in the fragment shader. In order to get rid of both the lens distortion and the depth distortion …
