ZIP load modeling has been used in various power system applications. The aggregate load modeling is common practice in utility companies. However, little research has been done on the theoretical formulation of the aggregate load. This paper formulates the aggregate ZIP load model using the single ZIP load model. The factors that may affect aggregate ZIP load estimation are studied. Common ZIP parameter estimation methods including least squares method, optimization method and neural network method have been used in this paper to estimate ZIP parameters. The case studies are based on the IEEE 13-bus and 34-bus system built in OpenDSS. …

Flowpathways and source water connectivity dynamics are widely recognized to affect tile-drainage water quality. In this study, we developed and evaluated a framework that couples event-based hydrograph recession and specific conductance end-member mixing analysis (SC-EMMA) to provide a more robust framework for quantifying both flow pathway dynamics and source connectivity of drainage water in tile-drained landscapes. High-frequency (30-min) flow and conductivity data were collected from an edge-of-field tile main located in northwestern Ohio, and the newly developed framework was applied for data collected in water year 2019. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis was used to evaluate the impact of pathway-connectivity …

Autonomous equipment for crop production is on the verge of technical and economic feasibility, but government regulation may slow its adoption. Key regulatory issues include requirements for on-site human supervision, liability for autonomous machine error, and intellectual property in robotic learning. As an example of the impact of regulation on the economic benefits of autonomous crop equipment, analysis from the United Kingdom suggests that requiring 100% on-site human supervision almost wipes out the economic benefits of autonomous crop equipment for small and medium farms and increases the economies-of-scale advantage of larger farms.

Retirements and other forms of attrition have reduced employment levels at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) over the past 20 years. Left in the wake of staff departures is a younger and more inexperienced workforce that shoulders numerous responsibilities. Although operations throughout the Cabinet have been affected by staff losses, construction inspection has suffered disproportionately. Strategies for mitigating the impacts of staff loss include robust knowledge management and risk-based construction inspection. This project developed several tools to help KYTC implement a risk-based construction inspection program, including (1) heat maps that qualitatively rate the levels of risk for different construction activities; …

Bearing voltages and associated bearing currents in electric machines driven by pulsewidth modulation converters with high switching frequencies and high dv/dt can cause premature bearing failures. This article proposes a new modeling approach for the prediction of steady-state and transient bearing voltages based on two-dimensional (2-D) electromagnetic finite element analysis with coupled external circuits using measured bearing capacitance values. The distributed-element external circuit was employed mainly to take into account the influence of wire distribution and frequency dependency, which are typically neglected by traditional equivalent circuits. The developed model was then used to simulate bearing voltages for various scenarios and …

Finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has been widely studied and applied to the power converters and motor drives. It provides the power electronics system with fast dynamic response, nonlinear system formulation, and flexible objectives and constraints integration. However, its variable switching frequency feature also induces severe concerns on the power loss, the thermal profile, and the filter design. Stemming from these concerns, this article investigates the variable switching frequency characteristics of FCS-MPC on the grid-connected inverters. An intuitive relationship between the switching frequency and the magnitude of the converter output voltage is proposed through the geometry analysis, where …

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited form of heart disease, associated with over 1,000 mutations, many in β-cardiac myosin (MYH7). Molecular studies of myosin with different HCM mutations have revealed a diversity of effects on ATPase and load-sensitive rate of detachment from actin. It has been difficult to predict how such diverse molecular effects combine to influence forces at the cellular level and further influence cellular phenotypes. This study focused on the P710R mutation that dramatically decreased in vitro motility velocity and actin-activated ATPase, in contrast to other MYH7 mutations. Optical trap measurements of single myosin molecules revealed …
