There are many scientific applications in which there is a need to solve very large linear systems. The preconditioned Krylove subspace methods are considered the preferred methods in this field. The preconditioners employed in the preconditioned iterative solvers usually determine the overall convergence rate. However, choosing a good preconditioner for a specific sparse linear system arising from a particular application is the combination of art and science, and presents a formidable challenge for many design engineers and application scientists who do not have much knowledge of preconditioned iterative methods.

The current design code governing bridge structure resistance to vessel impact loads in the U.S. is the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' (AASHTO) Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridges. The code stipulated method, based on Meir-Dornberg's equivalent static load method, is usually not warranted because of insufficient data on the impact load histories and wide scatter of the impact force values. The AASHTO load equations ignore certain fundamental factors that affect the determination of impact forces and bridge dynamic responses. Effects Of Railroad Track Structural Components And Subgrade On Damping And Dissipation Of Train Induced Vibration, Bei Su

A method for numerical simulation of train induced track vibration and wave propagation in subgrade has been proposed. The method uses a mass to simulate the bogie of a train and considers the effect of rail roughness. For this method, rail roughness is considered as a randomly generated signal and a filter is used to block the undesired components. The method predicts the particle velocity around the track and can be applied to many kinds of railroad trackbeds including traditional ballast trackbed and modern Hot mix asphalt (HMA) trackbed.
