Assessing Mesenchymal Stem Cell Phenotype After Heparan Sulfate Supplementation, Isani Patel Jan 2026

Assessing Mesenchymal Stem Cell Phenotype After Heparan Sulfate Supplementation, Isani Patel

2026 Research Poster Competition

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that damages the protective coating of nerves, often causing lasting neurological symptoms. Current treatments slow disease activity but rarely repair existing damage. In response to this, a novel treatment option has emerged: mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy. MSCs are cells found in different adult tissues like bone marrow, and they have the potential to release repair-supporting signals and moderate inflammation. Nevertheless, results in a clinical setting have been inconsistent due to variations in cell potency. As a potential strategy to enhance MSC therapeutic potential, the addition of heparan sulfate, a naturally occurring signaling molecule, …

A Probabilistic Approach To Multiscale Simulation: Evaluating Machine-Learned Backmapping Models Of Diphenylalanine, Sage Paschall Jan 2026

A Probabilistic Approach To Multiscale Simulation: Evaluating Machine-Learned Backmapping Models Of Diphenylalanine, Sage Paschall

2026 Research Poster Competition

Diphenylalanine (FF) has demonstrated the tendency to form several nanostructures, a subset of which are electrically conductive and have exciting potential applications in biotechnology and nanoelectronics. However, the exact mechanisms underlying this self-assembly process remain largely ambiguous. Atomistic-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations allow for the evaluation of atomic-level interactions crucial in understanding the driving thermodynamic forces behind self-assembly, but are too computationally expensive to span the necessary timescale to observe the self-assembly process in action. Coarse-grained (CG) models allow for simulation at the appropriate timescale but come at the cost of vital atomistic detail. It is therefore important to develop …

Testing The Effects Of Mechanical Stimulation On Mesenchymal Stem Cell Cultures, Ella Collis

2026 Research Poster Competition

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising treatment option for a variety of diseases due to their ability to migrate to far-off sites, modulate inflammatory immune responses, secrete factors that aid in tissue healing, and their capacity to become several cell types. These cells can be found and isolated from various body tissues including bone marrow and adipose tissue, even so the number of cells obtained from these tissues is minimal compared to the amounts needed for their transplantation in cell therapy treatments. Therefore, their culture in plastic dishes is required to increase the number of cells and obtain the …

In recent years, several advancements have been made in the use of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology as an alternative …

P4 Driven Data Plane Analytics For Industrial Control Network Security, Haden Fowler Jan 2026

P4 Driven Data Plane Analytics For Industrial Control Network Security, Haden Fowler

2026 Research Poster Competition

Industrial control systems manage critical infrastructure such as power grids, water treatment plants, and manufacturing facilities. These systems rely on specialized network protocols to send measurements and commands between sensors, controllers, and operator workstations. Protecting these networks from cyberattacks is essential because a successful intrusion could disrupt services that millions of people depend on daily. Most current security monitoring approaches analyze copies of network traffic after it has already passed through the system. This delay means that malicious commands may reach their targets before any alarm is raised. More importantly, when alerts do occur, operators often lack the evidence needed …

Analysis Of Potential Alkali Reactivity Of Aggregates In Arkansas, Brigita Dowling Jan 2026

Analysis Of Potential Alkali Reactivity Of Aggregates In Arkansas, Brigita Dowling

2026 Research Poster Competition

Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) is a deleterious chemical reaction in concrete that leads to the deterioration of concrete structures. This reaction occurs between minerals present in aggregates and alkalis in the cement, and produces a gel-like substance called alkali silicate gel. Gradually, these gels absorb water from the environment and expand, leading to internal stresses in the concrete. This damage results in expansion, cracking, and deformation, reducing the strength and durability of the concrete significantly. While this damage appears minor initially, eventually they can lead to the need for costly repairs or replacement of the concrete. ASR has been observed …

Developing A Cpp-Conjugated Cas9 Library For Efficient Non-Viral Delivery To The Dmd Gene, Amie Donathan

2026 Research Poster Competition

Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or DMD, is a genetic neuromuscular disorder caused by the mutation of the DMD gene, resulting in alterations in the functionality or production of dystrophin, a protein essential to maintain muscle fiber integrity and strength. This mutation leads to progressive muscle degeneration, causing motor loss, cardiopulmonary failure, and ultimately, premature death. Gene therapies using CRISPR aim to replace the mutated gene to provide long-term correction. Although this has promise, CRISPR-based therapies use a viral vector to deliver, which presents notable challenges, such as immune problems and liver toxicity. A non-viral delivery method is a viable approach, but …

Total hip replacement is a highly successful surgical intervention that restores mobility and improves quality of life for patients with severe joint degeneration. However, the long-term durability of artificial hip joints remains limited by tribological challenges, particularly wear-related failures that can lead to osteolysis and revision surgeries. In metal-on-polyethylene bearing systems, reducing friction and wear at the interface between cobalt–chromium–molybdenum (CCM) femoral heads and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liners is critical to extending implant lifespan. Laser surface texturing has emerged as a promising technique to improve tribological performance by introducing micro-dimples that enhance lubricant retention and reduce asperity contact. …

Optimal Network Maintenance And Restoration: Applications And Algorithms, Nayan Chakrabarty Dec 2025

Optimal Network Maintenance And Restoration: Applications And Algorithms, Nayan Chakrabarty

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we consider three types of network optimization problems. In Chapter 1, we consider a network maintenance problem which focuses on time-based redeployment of multi-class nodes for reliable wireless sensor network coverage. Whereas previous research on time-based node redeployment assumes nodes are identical with respect to time to failure, we use multiple classes of sensor nodes to represent a scenario where nodes’ times to failure are dependent on positioning in the network. We propose a partial survival signature (PSS) approach for estimating area coverage reliability under a given time-based redeployment policy, where the PSS is estimated by Monte …
