Representativeness Evaluation Of Delta-Flux Eddy Covariance Towers For Assessing Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Rice Fields In The Mid-South Region, Katherine Skiles Dec 2023

Representativeness Evaluation Of Delta-Flux Eddy Covariance Towers For Assessing Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Rice Fields In The Mid-South Region, Katherine Skiles

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Rice grown in 5 states across the Mid-South (AR, LA, MS, TX, and MO) account for nearly 80% of all domestic U.S. rice production. Methane emissions produced during rice farming and the large seasonal water demand to maintain flooded fields have created a need for alternative irrigation research that can reduce methane emissions and conserve water. Structures called eddy covariance towers (ECTs) can observe methane and other flux responses to changing irrigation styles, and their data is shared across flux tower networks such as Delta-Flux in the Mid-South. The Delta-Flux network is relatively new, and its data-sharing capacity is not …

Examining The Benefits Of Using Rainfall To Supplement Alternate Wetting And Drying Irrigation In Zero-Grade Rice Fields In Central Arkansas, Leo Black

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Arkansas farmers account for more than 50% of United States production of rice, a crop that requires 3 to 5 times as much water as other regional crops. Methods of reducing water use and increasing its efficiency are being explored throughout the rice production industry, including irrigation management, better land grading, and precipitation capture. This project investigates the combination of these methods. The objectives of this project were to assess field-level water inputs, identify relationships between rice growth and water input, and analyze weather patterns in zero-grade fields in central Arkansas. Subsequent results were used to determine if there is …

Germanium films were grown on c-plane sapphire with a 10 nm AlAs buffer layer using molecular beam epitaxy. The effects of Ge film thickness on the surface morphology and crystal structure were investigated using ex situ characterization techniques. The nucleation of Ge proceeds by forming (111) oriented three-dimensional islands with two rotational twin domains about the growth axis. The boundaries between the twin grains are the origin of the 0.2% strain and tilt grains. The transition to a single-grain orientation reduces the strain and results in a better-quality Ge buffer. Understanding the role of thickness on material quality during the …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

Macrophages are one of the most prevalent subsets of immune cells within the tumor microenvironment and perform a range of functions depending on the cytokines and chemokines released by surrounding cells and tissues. Recent research has revealed that macrophages can exhibit a spectrum of phenotypes, making them highly plastic due to their ability to alter their physiology in response to environmental cues. Recent advances in examining heterogeneous macrophage populations include optical metabolic imaging, such as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), and multiphoton microscopy. However, the method of detection for these systems is reliant upon the coenzymes NAD(P)H and FAD, which …

CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) has been a cutting-edge biotechnology in both gene editing and biosensing due to its desirable features, such as high base resolution and set-and-forget operation. However, as a nucleic acid detection method, an DNA/RNA amplification procedure is still inevitable in CRISPR biosensors. In this study, a highly-ordered nanopore array SERS substrate, coated with silver nanoparticles, was fabricated and utilized as a platform for the specific detection of Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) without the time-consuming DNA amplification step. The smart sensing strategy was established by introducing an ssDNA labeled with a Raman active molecule …

A Phenomenological Model For Creep And Creep-Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Behavior In Ferritic Steels, Ashok Saxena

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A model to rationalize the effects of test temperature and microstructural variables on the creep crack growth (CCG) and creep-fatigue crack growth (CFCG) rates in ferritic steels is described. The model predicts that as the average spacing between grain boundary particles that initiate creep cavities decrease, the CCG and CFCG rates increase. Further, the CCG data at several temperatures collapse into a single trend when a temperature compensated CCG rate derived from the model is used. The CCG and CFCG behavior measured at different temperatures is used to assess the effects of variables such as the differences between the base …

A Review Of Nano And Microscale Heat Transfer: An Experimental And Molecular Dynamics Perspective, Samyabrata Chatterjee, Paras, Han Hu, Monojit Chakraborty

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Significant progress in the development of micro and nanoscale devices has been observed for the past three decades. The thermal transportation in these small-length scales varies significantly, and it is difficult to explain the underlying physics using the pre-existing theoretical formulations. When the bulk dimension of a system is comparable to or smaller than the mean free path (MFP) of the thermal carriers, classical theories, such as Fourier’s Law of heat conduction, are unable to accurately explain the system energy dynamics. The phenomena of energy transit and conversion at the micro to nanoscale is an interesting topic of research due …

Treating High Salinity Produced Water Using Hybrid Membrane Processes: Electrocoagulation-Microfiltration/Ultrafiltration-Membrane Distillation-Crystallization, Mahmood Gheni Jebur

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Produced water (PW) is considered the largest industrial wastewater stream in the world. PW generated from oil and gas operations generally contains a range of contaminants including high total dissolved solids, high total suspended solids, polar and nonpolar organic compounds, and low surface tension dissolved species. Treating PW is very challenging and applying only membrane-based technologies is not sufficient due to membrane fouling, which affects their long-term performance. Hence, integrated membrane processes are required to treat PW effectively. Hybrid membrane processes, which may result from combining a conventional process with a membrane separation, could be used to address the issues …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nanopore sensing has been successfully used to characterize biological molecules with single-molecule resolution based on the resistive pulse sensing approach. However, its use in nanoparticle characterization has been constrained by the need to tailor the nanopore aperture size to the size of the analyte, precluding the analysis of heterogeneous samples. Additionally, nanopore sensors often require the use of high salt concentrations to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, which further limits their ability to study a wide range of nanoparticles that are unstable at high ionic strength. Here, a new paradigm in nanopore research that takes advantage of a polymer electrolyte system …
