Cellulose Membrane Performance And Properties With Focus On Dialysis Application, Juliana Marçal Jul 2026

Cellulose Membrane Performance And Properties With Focus On Dialysis Application, Juliana Marçal

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chronic kidney disease affects approximately 35 million individuals in the United States, with nearly 550,000 patients dependent on dialysis for survival. Chronic kidney disease and end stage kidney disease impose substantial burdens on patients and healthcare systems, driving demand for improved dialysis membranes with enhanced flux, selectivity, and biocompatibility. The performance of dialysis membranes plays a critical role in treatment efficiency, governing solute transport, fluid removal, and overall therapeutic outcomes. In hemodialysis, membranes must achieve an optimal balance between high permeability and selective solute rejection while maintaining mechanical stability and long-term biocompatibility. Conventional dialysis membranes are commonly fabricated from polymeric …

Designing Functional Nanolaminates From Complex Atomic Layer Deposition Reactions, Joseph Joel Muhanga Jul 2026

Designing Functional Nanolaminates From Complex Atomic Layer Deposition Reactions, Joseph Joel Muhanga

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) enables precise cycle by cycle control over film thickness and composition. This kind of control is ideal for the engineering of functional nanolaminate coatings with tailored optical properties. Since ALD synthesized composite films are deposited as discrete, stratified layers and not as homogeneously intermixed solids, it is not yet clear when such composites can be be treated with the effective medium approximation (EMA). EMA is simplification that is important to the design of mixed oxide coatings. This dissertation addresses that question using a model system, and then asks whether the same approach can be used to …

Proposed Risk-Based Framework To Predict Long-Term Performance Of Military Airfield Concrete Pavements, Dimitrios Kimon Tsirmpas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Concrete airfield pavements are designed following strict specifications to provide decades of performance and serviceability. The pavements are expected to withstand demanding operational loading and environmental conditions. However, long-term performance often strays from the expected results despite compliance to the specifications. This thesis establishes the foundation of a framework that links the mixture design test results to the in-service performance of airfield pavements. The goal of this work was to create the principles of a risk-based framework for pavement decision making using a case study on two similar airfields. With this quantitative framework established, the approval processes for concrete mix …

Optimizing Escort Strategies For Chokepoint And Littoral Maritime Lanes Using Mixed-Integer Programming, Shantonu Mitra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Protecting high-value units (HVUs) while traversing maritime chokepoints under threats is a significant challenge that requires effective planning for allocating limited naval assets (escort ships, detection capabilities, and defensive capabilities). Although the weapon-to-target assignment problem has been previously studied in the literature, the problem of allocating limited naval assets under uncertain threat scenarios remains unexplored. This research develops a two-stage stochastic optimization framework with the objective of maximizing the expected weighted survivability of HVUs across all scenarios. The first-stage decisions include assigning available escorts to HVUs, selecting locations for deploying detection capabilities, and allocating defensive capabilities to each escort prior …

Development Of Medical Device For Hypovolemic Assessment Using Peripheral Venous Pressure, Connor J. Breshears Jul 2026

Development Of Medical Device For Hypovolemic Assessment Using Peripheral Venous Pressure, Connor J. Breshears

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accurate assessment of intravascular volume status remains challenging because traditional measurements such as heart rate, blood pressure, physical examination findings, and laboratory values may be subjective, delayed, or insensitive to early volume loss. Peripheral venous pressure (PVP) waveform analysis provides a potential approach for minimally invasive volume-status monitoring because PVP waveforms can be acquired from peripheral venous access and may contain frequency-domain information related to cardiac activity, respiratory modulation, vascular coupling, and intravascular filling. This thesis presents the development and evaluation of a proof-of-concept embedded prototype for PVP waveform acquisition and volume-status classification. The system integrates a Millar MEMS pressure …

Review And Experimental Demonstration Of The Concrete Maturity Method For Early Opening Of Arkansas Pavements, Chase Dykema Jul 2026

Review And Experimental Demonstration Of The Concrete Maturity Method For Early Opening Of Arkansas Pavements, Chase Dykema

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications across the United States require a minimum time to gain strength for concrete pavements before they can be opened to construction equipment or traffic. This period is anywhere from three to seven days. However, concrete pavements can often be opened earlier as long as a minimum required strength is attained. With the development of modern pavement mixes, this strength can often be achieved well before the required curing period has passed. Allowing contractors to open pavements earlier increases construction efficiency. One nondestructive method of proving a pavement has achieved the required strength is the …

Coupled Effects Of Sub-Atmospheric Pressure And Surface Structures On Pool Boiling Performance And Hysteresis Pathways, Mohammad Ishraq Hossain Jul 2026

Coupled Effects Of Sub-Atmospheric Pressure And Surface Structures On Pool Boiling Performance And Hysteresis Pathways, Mohammad Ishraq Hossain

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The increasing power density of microelectronics has created a need for cooling technologies capable of maintaining low operating temperatures. Sub-atmospheric pool boiling of water is promising because reducing saturation pressure lowers the boiling temperature, enabling two phase cooling within electronics-relevant temperature limits. However, reduced pressure also affects CHF, HTC, and post-CHF recovery. In this work, pool boiling experiments were conducted on flat copper, microchannel copper, and micro-pin-fin copper surfaces over 10–100 kPa to examine the coupled effects of pressure and surface structure. CHF and HTC increased with pressure, while structured surfaces enhanced both relative to flat copper. Surface structure dominated …

Soft Urea Nitridation Of Tantalum-Based Thin Films For Oxynitride Synthesis, Rishabh Srivastava

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rising global energy consumption and the transition toward low-carbon technologies place new demands on functional materials. Particularly, semiconductors that convert sunlight directly into chemical fuels with high efficiency and long operational lifetimes. The synthesis of visible light active tantalum oxynitride (TaON) thin films for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting typically requires ammonolysis with pressurized NH3 gas, which presents persistent barriers in safety and phase selectivity. In this work, a soft urea ammonolysis route was employed in which solid urea was employed as an in-situ nitrogen source inside a vacuum-sealed reactor. The finite urea mass establishes a self-limiting nitrogen chemical potential that …

Integrated Sensing And Communication For Uavs With Oddm Waveforms, Mohammad Abdul Mobin Jul 2026

Integrated Sensing And Communication For Uavs With Oddm Waveforms, Mohammad Abdul Mobin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A new delay-Doppler (DD) integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework is proposed for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. In the DD-ISAC framework, both sensing and communications are performed by using the orthogonal delay Doppler division multiplexing (ODDM) waveforms, which unify sensing and communication designs through their unique properties, such as local bi-orthogonality and dual-resolution in the DD domain. Specifically, the dual-resolution property enables the generation of delay-Doppler map for accurate and low complexity sensing, and the bi-orthogonality minimizes interference for both sensing and communications. The ODDM waveforms are used in combination with the phase comparison monopulse technique and a scaled …
