A Case Study Of Drone Delivery Reliability For Time-Sensitive Medical Supplies With Stochastic Demand And Meteorological Conditions, Travis B. Glick, Miguel Figliozzi, Avinash Unnikrishnan
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Drones are increasingly being utilized to deliver medical supplies, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend. Drones arrive quickly by taking more direct paths and avoiding ground-based obstructions. However, drones are not completely reliable and may also experience failures and delays. For consumer products, delivery delays are an inconvenience, but for some medical supplies, delays may be fatal. This research focuses on the drone reliability of one particular type of supply and event: automatic defibrillators for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). A modeling framework is developed to analyze drone delivery reliability with stochastic demands and meteorological conditions. Using probability distributions …

Tide-Storm Surge Interactions In Highly Altered Estuaries: How Channel Deepening Increases Surge Vulnerability, Ramin Familkhalili, Stefan A. Talke, David A. Jay
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We develop idealized analytical and numerical models to study how storm surge amplitudes vary within frictional, weakly convergent, nonreflective estuaries. Friction is treated using Chebyshev polynomials. Storm surge is represented as the sum of two sinusoidal components, and a third constituent represents the semidiurnal tide (D2). An empirical fit of storm surge shows that two sinusoidal components adequately represent storm surge above a baseline value (R2 = 0.97). We find that the spatial transformation of surge amplitudes depends on the depth of the estuary, and characteristics of the surge wave including time scale, amplitude, asymmetry, and surge‐tide relative phase. Analytical …
Resource Study Of Large-Scale Electric Water Heater Aggregation, Kevin Marnell, Conrad Eustis, Robert B. Bass
Resource Study Of Large-Scale Electric Water Heater Aggregation, Kevin Marnell, Conrad Eustis, Robert B. Bass
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Residential-scale distributed energy assets, like residential electric water heaters, individually present a negligible load to the power grid. When aggregated, however, these assets can impart significant effects within a balancing area; they may be dispatched en masse to provide grid services. An aggregation of water heaters may be controlled to assume generator-like functions with the ability to effectively “decrement power” through dispatch of load. This resource study examines the capabilities of a 10,000 unit water heater aggregation by subjecting the aggregate to dispatch requests of various size and duration, then analyzing how the aggregate responds to and recovers from these …
Data-Driven Modeling Of The Wake Behind A Wind Turbine Array, Naseem Ali, Raul Bayoan Cal
Data-Driven Modeling Of The Wake Behind A Wind Turbine Array, Naseem Ali, Raul Bayoan Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The wake flow in a wind turbine array boundary layer is described using the Koopman operator. Dynamics of the flow are decomposed into the linear and forcing terms, and the low-energy delay coordinates are revealed. The rare events show the non-Gaussian long tails that capture the switching and bursting phenomena. The near-wake region shows the incoherent phase space region, where the dynamics are strongly nonlinear. The far-wake region is marked with the small non-Gaussian forcing term, and the dynamics are largely governed by linear dynamics. The data-driven predictive model is built based on the Hankel-based dynamic mode decomposition and treats …

The main objective of every project in an organization is to maximize its profit. This maximization of profit can be achieved through proper allocation of project managers to projects in an organization. But assigning a project to a project manager is still considered a difficult issue and is not yet fully addressed in the literature. However, in high-tech industries various project assignment methodologies are used to assign project managers to multiple projects and reassignment during new-product development projects. The aim of the optimization model created in this project is to develop a framework for project assignments to project managers including …

Potential Of Module Arrangements To Enhance Convective Cooling In Solar Photovoltaic Arrays, B. Stanislawski, Fabien Margairaz, Raúl Bayoán Cal, Marc Calaf
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
When solar photovoltaic (PV) module temperatures rise during operation, commonly-installed modules experience an efficiency loss between 0.1 and 0.5% per degree above 25+C. Thus, extensive research has aimed to reduce the operating temperature of solar modules. However, many cooling solutions require additional cost or equipment that precludes their implementation in utility-scale PV plants. Based on previous studies of land-atmosphere interactions of surface thermal heterogeneity, we hypothesize that certain solar farm arrangements may enhance natural convective heat transfer between the solar modules and surrounding flow. Due to the strong non-linear relationship between module temperature and convective heat transfer, enhancing the convective …

Impact Of Cognitive Tasks On Co2 And Isoprene Emissions From Humans, Elliott T. Gall, Asit Kumar Mishra, Jiayu Li, Stefano Schiavon, Aurelie Laguerre
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The human body emits a wide range of chemicals, including CO2 and isoprene. To examine the impact of cognitive tasks on human emission rates of CO2 and isoprene, we conducted an across-subject, counterbalanced study in a controlled chamber involving 16 adults. The chamber replicated an office environment. In groups of four, participants engaged in 30 min each of cognitive tasks (stressed activity) and watching nature documentaries (relaxed activity). Measured biomarkers indicated higher stress levels were achieved during the stressed activity. Per-person CO2 emission rates were greater for stressed than relaxed activity (30.3 ± 2.1 vs 27.0 ± 1.7 g/h/p, p …

In the reduced acceleration environment aboard orbiting spacecraft, capillary forces are often exploited to access and control the location and stability of fuels, propellants, coolants, and biological liquids in containers (tanks) for life support. To access the ‘far reaches’ of such tanks, the passive capillary pumping mechanism of interior corner networks can be employed to achieve high levels of draining. With knowledge of maximal corner drain rates, gas ingestion can be avoided and accurate drain transients predicted. In this paper, we benchmark a numerical method for the symmetric draining of capillary liquids in simple interior corners. The free surface is …

A Dynamic Neural Network Designed Using Analytical Methods Produces Dynamic Control Properties Similar To An Analogous Classical Controller, Wade William Hilts, Nicholas Szczecinski, Roger Quinn, Alexander Hunt
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Human balance is achieved using many concurrent control loops that combine to react to changes in environment, posture, center of mass and other factors affecting stability. Though numerous engineering models of human balance control have been tested, no methods for porting these models to a neural architecture have been established. It is our hypothesis that the analytical methods we have developed, combined with classical control techniques will provide a reasonable starting point for developing dynamic neural controllers that can reproduce classical control capabilities. In previous work, we tested this hypothesis and demonstrated that a biologically-constrained neural controller that replicates human …

We develop a stochastic model for Lagrangian velocity as it is observed in experimental and numerical fully developed turbulent flows. We define it as the unique statistically stationary solution of a causal dynamics, given by a stochastic differential equation. In comparison to previously proposed stochastic models, the obtained process is infinitely differentiable at a given finite Reynolds number, and its second-order statistical properties converge to those of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in the infinite Reynolds number limit. In this limit, it exhibits furthermore intermittent scaling properties, as they can be quantified using higher-order statistics. To achieve this, we begin with generalizing …

This paper is an attempt to identify a methodology for converting conventional energy consumption buildings to net-zero energy buildings (NZEB). The first step was rather different from the usual energy audit, which is to analyze a facility’s energy consumptions from both macro- and micro-scales. To implement such an approach, a governmental office building (Metro) in Portland, OR, was chosen as a case study. After a building model was validated against a real measurement, it was then used to evaluate different energy efficiency strategies (EESs) so as to reduce the energy consumption. The EESs showed a reduction in energy use intensity …

Performance of solar PV diminishes with the increase in temperature of the solar modules. Therefore, to further facilitate the reduction in cost of photovoltaic energy, new approaches to limit module temperature increase in natural ambient conditions should be explored. Thus far only approaches based at the individual panel level have been investigated, while the more complex, systems approach remains unexplored. Here, we perform the first wind tunnel scaled solar farm experiments to investigate the potential for temperature reduction through system-level flow enhancement. The percentage of solar irradiance converted into electric power depends upon module efficiency, typically less than 20%. The …

A right-hook (RH) crash is a common type of bicycle–motor vehicle crash that occurs between a right-turning vehicle and through-moving bicycle at an intersection in right-hand driving countries. Despite the frequency and severity of this crash type, no significant driver-performance based evidence of the causes of RH crashes at signalized intersections was found in the literature. This study examined the driver’s visual attention in a right-turning scenario at signalized intersections with bicycle lanes but no exclusive right-turning lanes while interacting with a bicyclist to develop an understanding of RH crash causality. Fifty-one participants in 21 simulated road scenarios performed a …

In this paper, we do research on generating unitary matrices for quantum circuits automatically. We consider that quantum circuits are divided into six types, and the unitary operator expressions for each type are offered. Based on this, we propose an algorithm for computing the circuit unitary matrices in detail. Then, for quantum logic circuits composed of quantum logic gates, a faster method to compute unitary matrices of quantum circuits with truth table is introduced as a supplement. Finally, we apply the proposed algorithm to different reversible benchmark circuits based on NCT library (including NOT gate, Controlled-NOT gate, Toffoli gate) and …

Multi-Scale Decision Network With Feature Fusion And Weighting For Few-Shot Learning, Xiaoru Wang, Bing Ma, Zhihong Yu, Fu Li, Yali Cai
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Learning from limited labelled examples is key a research hotspot with excellent scenarios and potential applications. Currently, most of metric learning-based few-shot models still have the problem of low recognition accuracy. This is mainly because that they only use the top-layer abstract feature with semantic information, which ignores the low-layer features that are also critical for the few-shot recognition. Therefore, the extracted features do not have abundant representation ability, and it is difficult to recognize easily confusing objects. Moreover, they usually adopt a fixed distance function or train a comparable network to measure features. These methods lack adaptability, cannot sufficiently …

Introduction To The Design And Simulation Of Reflectionless Filters, G. Lemire, Branimir Pejcinovic
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
One novel approach to improving filter performance is to use so-called reflectionless filters which have recently been proposed. In this paper we demonstrate how to design, simulate and manufacture a reference reflectionless low-pass filter with the corner frequency of 188 MHz. We have found very good agreement between measurements, simulations, and published data, which validates our implementation of the design procedure. We have also designed a comparable diplexer so that we can examine the relative advantages and disadvantages of the reflectionless filters vs. diplexers. Measurements, simulations and published data, all agree very well in this case as well. This agreement …

Design Of Rubrics For Student Outcomes In 2019-2020 Abet Criteria, Branimir Pejcinovic
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
ABET is the main accreditation body for engineering programs in the United States and they have recently introduced a new set of Student Outcomes. This set was reduced from 11 to 7 items by combining several outcomes into one and adding some new ones. In our electrical and computer engineering programs we decided to design a set of seven general rubrics, one for each ABET outcome. These rubrics could then be used unaltered if course content fits them, or they can be adjusted to fit a particular course. To use a common description for rubrics, we wanted to keep the …

Background and purpose: Recent findings suggest that a gait assessment at a discrete moment in a clinic or laboratory setting may not reflect functional, everyday mobility. As a step towards better understanding gait during daily life in neurological populations, we compared gait measures that best discriminated people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) from their respective, age-matched, healthy control subjects (MS-Ctl, PD-Ctl) in laboratory tests versus a week of daily life monitoring.
Methods: We recruited 15 people with MS (age mean ± SD: 49 ± 10 years), 16 MS-Ctl (45 ± 11 years), 16 …

With the rapid development of quantum theory and technology in recent years, especially the emergence of some quantum cloud computing platforms, more and more researchers are not satisfied with the theoretical derivation and simulation verification of quantum computation (especially quantum algorithms), experimental verification on real quantum devices has become a new trend. In this paper, three representative quantum algorithms, namely Deutsch-Jozsa, Grover, and Shor algorithms, are briefly depicted, and then their implementation circuits are presented, respectively. We program these circuits on python with QISKit to connect the remote real quantum devices (i.e., ibmqx4, ibmqx5) on IBM Q to verify these …

Sediment Interval Velocities From A Monostatic Multibeam Sonar, Charles W. Holland, Samuel Pinson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Interval velocities for marine sediments are generally obtained from source-receiver separations at various offsets. A method is described for estimating interval velocities using a monostatic configuration. Testing is performed using simulated data from rough layered seabeds and interval velocity is estimated within less than 1% of the true value. Monostatic multibeam data from the Gulf of Lion are also presented which exhibit many characteristics similar to the simulated data. The method applied to the measured data yield an interval velocity of 1569 m/s in an 18m sediment layer. This accords with nearby independent data from cores and wide-angle reflection analysis. …

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) provide highfidelity data that improve situation awareness of electric power grid operations. PMU datastreams inform wide-area state estimation, monitor area control error, and facilitate event detection in real time. As PMU data become more available and increasingly reliable, these devices are found in new roles within control systems, such as remedial action schemes and early warning detection systems. As with other cyber physical systems, maintaining data integrity and security pose a significant challenge for power system operators. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of multiple machine learning techniques to detect malicious data injection within …
Evaluation Of A Novel Remote Displacement Sensor Prototype Using Video And Laser-Based Technology For Civil Infrastructure Applications, Nicholas J. Brown
Evaluation Of A Novel Remote Displacement Sensor Prototype Using Video And Laser-Based Technology For Civil Infrastructure Applications, Nicholas J. Brown
Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports
Deflection measurements on structures, especially with regards to long-term monitoring, continues to be a challenge with current sensor technologies. Material degradation and changes in the mechanical properties due to aging (for example, creep and shrinkage in concrete bridges) directly impact the deflections exhibited by a structure. In this article we introduce and discuss the evaluation of a novel laser and video-based displacement sensor prototype to monitor displacements and rotations in structures remotely. The sensor is both inexpensive, using off-the shelf components, but also accurate and practical for situations that do not allow the use of conventional displacement sensors, which require …
Flood Dynamics In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Past, Present, And Future, Lumas Terence Helaire
Flood Dynamics In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Past, Present, And Future, Lumas Terence Helaire
Dissertations and Theses
The Portland area has an extensive flood history since it was founded in 1845. In the late 19th century, the Portland area was prone to flooding from snowmelt freshets (3-6 months duration) and brief winter rain or rain-on-snow events. Since that time the magnitude of spring freshets has been curtailed by 45% due to climate change, flow diversions, and reservoir management. Along with changes in hydrology, the bathymetry of the Lower Columbia River has been altered by the dredging of the navigation channel, diking, and land reclamation. To understand how these changes in hydrology and bathymetry have affected tidal and …
An Application Of Deep Learning Models To Automate Food Waste Classification, Alejandro Zachary Espinoza
An Application Of Deep Learning Models To Automate Food Waste Classification, Alejandro Zachary Espinoza
Dissertations and Theses
Food wastage is a problem that affects all demographics and regions of the world. Each year, approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is thrown away. In an effort to track and reduce food waste in the commercial sector, some companies utilize third party devices which collect data to analyze individual contributions to the global problem. These devices track the type of food wasted (such as vegetables, fruit, boneless chicken, pasta) along with the weight. Some devices also allow the user to leave the food in a kitchen container while it is weighed, so the container weight must also …
The Optimized Synthesis Of Copper Nanowire For High-Quality And Fabrication Of Core-Shell Nanowire, Suhyun Lee
The Optimized Synthesis Of Copper Nanowire For High-Quality And Fabrication Of Core-Shell Nanowire, Suhyun Lee
Dissertations and Theses
Flexible electronics are the promising technology for prospective application in foldable phones. Currently, indium tin oxide (ITO) has been widely used for electronic devices including flat-panel display. However, it is brittle and expensive. Metal nanowires are considered as alternative materials. Among various metal nanowires, copper nanowires are attractive because of its high electrical conductivity, better flexibility, and low cost compared with ITO. However, copper nanowires are very prone to oxidize, which causes subsequent degradation of electrical conductivity. Due to this oxidation issue, core-shell structure nanowires, which are formed silver shell having high conductivity and low resistivity on the surfaces of …
Hf Iq Mixer Vfo Temperature Compensation And Drive Level Optimization For Opposite Sideband Suppression, Katlin Anne-Rostomyan Dahn
Hf Iq Mixer Vfo Temperature Compensation And Drive Level Optimization For Opposite Sideband Suppression, Katlin Anne-Rostomyan Dahn
Dissertations and Theses
An amateur radio 40m band temperature compensated variable frequency oscillator (VFO) with drive-level optimized for opposite sideband suppression for use as the local oscillator (LO) of a high frequency (HF) IQ image reject mixer is considered in this work. The first problem of this thesis was the discovery of the HF IQ mixer's opposite sideband suppression dependence on LO drive-level. As a solution to this problem, the author built a fixed drive-level VFO for the optimal opposite sideband suppression. This then led to the second problem of this thesis; the discovery by this author of the well-known problem of VFO …

Passive Separation Of Binary Fluid Mixtures In Microchannels Using Lattice Boltzmann Method, Mohanad Kamil Radhi
Dissertations and Theses
Fluid mixtures in real life exist in two forms: miscible and immiscible. Separation of these mixtures using chemical agents or thermal energy has both environmental and economic disadvantages. The high cost and the environmental damage caused by the traditional separation techniques have stimulated both academia and industry to seek alternatives. The emergence of microfluidics offers robust solutions for a broad span of transport problems due to the high surface to volume ratio and reduced length scales. Particularly, the separation efficiency increases significantly due to the aforementioned feature. However, there is still a pressing need of passive separations for the sake …
