Theses

An emulsion is a dispersion of one liquid in another liquid, the liquids being insoluble in each other. An emulsion consists of two phases, a continuous phase and a dispersed phase. The dispersed phase consists of tiny droplets or particles of one liquid which is completely surrounded by the other liquid comprising the continuous phase. One of the many factors affecting the stability of an emulsion is the size of the particle of the dispersed liquid.

This study is concerned with one emulsion prepared by different mechanical devices and under different conditions. The units of equipment employed are Eppenbach Colloid …

Molydbenum, due to its high temperature properties, and potential supply, is becoming a very important structural material, particularly in the field of electronics, however, it is not new in this part of industry. As temperatures go higher in various fields, the need for satisfactory materials becomes of paramount importance.

One of the ways in which to overcome the disadvantages of poor stability, brazing difficulties, and surface resistance to high frequency conduction, is by electroplating. Preparation And Reduction Of Azo Dyes From 2-Amino Phenol-4-Sulfonic Acid, Guy J. Walker

Reduction of azo dyes is presented as a method for the synthesis of 2-amino phenol-4-oulfenic acid.

The synthesis and reduction of some azo derivatives of 2-amino phenol-4-sulfonic acid are described.

Preparation of the diazonium compounds of aniline, vitro aniline, 1-amino-2-nanhthol, 1-amino-2-naphthol-1-sulfonic acid, 2-amino phenol-4-sulfonic acid, 1-naphthol 1-amino, and 2-naphthylamine is discussed and their ability to couple with phenol-4-sulfonic acid evaluated.

Reduction of the resultant azo dyes is discussed with reference to fission and the benzidine rearrangement.

An overall presentation of results is Given in Tables I, II, and III on pages 27 - 29.

The work described in this thesis was undertaken with the view of exploring a reaction sequence suggested by early French investigators to synthesize 2-amino-4-chlorophenol-6-sulfonic acid especially in reference to the German claim that a low yield of product would result following this preparation, In particular, a successful application of this procedure would afford a relatively direct and inexpensive route to the sulfonic acid which is used as an azo dyestuff intermediate and could possibly find application in medicinal chemistry.

It was found that sulfonation and nitration of p-dichlorobenzene gave a high yield of the sodium-2-nitro-1,4-3 dichloro-benzene-6-sulfonate (91%) when using the …

The following chapters are devoted to the various phases of that branch of construction which is followed from the offshore side of the waterfront. This branch, in the parlance of the building trades, is known as dockbuilding. Years ago all waterfront structures in New York Harbor were constructed almost entirely of timber and experience taught that the most economical approach for building docks and wharves was made by utilizing floating piledrivers and derricks. Thus it happened that dockbuilders became skilled both in the use of wood framing tools and in handling marine equipment. Modern dockbuilders must have, in addition to …

This thesis is offered as partial fulfilment for the degree of Chemical Engineer at the Newark College of Engineering. It covers a very new subject - one which has been rather intensively developed by several investigators during the past three years. The writer has had the fortunate opportunity of working on organic ion-exchange materials at the Ellis-Foster Co., which kindly gave permission through Mr. Carleton Ellis for the publication of experimental results.
