To allow the safe and economical design of structures in flood plains of natural streams, techniques to estimate the magnitude and frequency of floods are established through multiple regression analysis for each state, relating flood peaks to topographic and climatic characteristics of the drainage basins. This study describes and compares the regional equations to assess peak flows for 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100-year recurrence intervals in different states of the U.S.A.

Publications from 40 continental states were reviewed and the regression equations analyzed on similarities and accuracy. Tables compare parameters, their frequency of occurence, and the constants and …

Development Of New Products Involving Various Uncertainties For Success, Manuel J. Senra May 1985

Development Of New Products Involving Various Uncertainties For Success, Manuel J. Senra

Theses

The development of new products is a very important task for any company, since the survival of most of the companies depends on their ability to introduce new products on the market. This is not, by all means, an easy task; it is seen from the large number of unsuccessful new products reported.

It is been proved that out of every ten products which emerge from Research and Development(R & D), only two become successes. For reasons like the one mentioned and because larger and larger funds are allocated to R & D, it is a very important task to …

While traditional industrial engineering methods can be successfully applied to improve productivity in the operations area, their effectiveness is limited where knowledge type work is being performed. For these types of activities, self-assessment has been proposed as a methodology to achieve increased efficiency. This thesis presents the results of applying this concept to the engineering function of a manufacturing firm.

Using a directed set of questionnaires as a focus, a self-assessment of itself was conducted by the Project Engineering Department to consider how well it thought itself to be performing and what its deficiencies were. Co-jointly the departments whose work …

Automated Arrhythmia Detection In The Exercise Electrocardiogram, Gregory Ciurpita May 1985

Automated Arrhythmia Detection In The Exercise Electrocardiogram, Gregory Ciurpita

Theses

A self-adapting, non-real time method for detecting arrhythmias in single channel Exercise ECG is described. Linear and non-linear digital filtering techniques are used to remove additive noise. A time-varying threshold technique is used to detect R-waves based on amplitude. Feature extraction and matched filter methods are used to classify QRS-waves into existing types, or to create new types. The program works on digitized data from floppy disk and plots all data along with classification results on ReGis graphics terminal or printer. This work will continue so that the system will be capable of processing three-channel ECG in real-time.

Digital Fm-Demodulation Using Digital Signal Processing Techniques, Peter Wagner May 1985

Digital Fm-Demodulation Using Digital Signal Processing Techniques, Peter Wagner

Theses

This thesis presents the results of research in the area of digital demodulation of FM signals. The first part of the thesis describes the performance of digital Hilbert-transformers and Differentiators that are optimized in a determined bandwidth. These digital filters are used to build a digital Klapper-Kratt detector. According to this procedure, the coefficients of the digital Klapper-Kratt detectors up to the filter length N=25 are calculated and the resulting discriminator ripple computed and evaluated. One suggested algorithm gives the opportunity to balance the detector at a certain center-frequency. The major part of this thesis describes a new approach towards …

Preparation And Properties Of Novel Dental Adhesives Based Upon Pentaerythritol, Yuan-Yuan Su May 1985

Preparation And Properties Of Novel Dental Adhesives Based Upon Pentaerythritol, Yuan-Yuan Su

Theses

Urethane methacrylates were synthesized from Pentaerythritol, TDI, HEMA and four phenolic blocking agents or from hydroxypropyl methacrylatel TDI and two phenolic blocking agents. All the products were characterized by melting pointy infrared spectroscopy, NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The bonding of these materials to dentin slices was also investigated. Such materials are supposed to not only react with the organic constituent of dentin but also polymerized with restorative resin. It was found that bond strength was enhanced by the use of the urethane methacrylates, resulting in best mean bonding strengths of 2400 psi.

Secondly to rank the different sources according to reliability. The parameters that were measured before and after the "1000 hour" high temperature and humidity test were, capacitance, leakage current, and equivalent series resistance. All the capacitors showed significant increase in leakage current after the test, but there were wide variations in catastrophic failure …

A Comparison Of Training Available To Entry Level Naval And Merchant Marine Engineroom Personnel, Paul J. Bugelski Jan 1985

A Comparison Of Training Available To Entry Level Naval And Merchant Marine Engineroom Personnel, Paul J. Bugelski

Theses

Similarities between occupations or industrial environments are often overshadowed by differences between goals, services, or products. From the time that shipboard steam propulsion became a practicality the Naval and merchant marine services have experienced this phenomena. For various reasons, the two sectors have ignored similarities between their respective occupational sub-groups, e.g. engineroom crews, and the training which facilitates each group's performance.

Manning and training problems, related to the evolution of automated shipboard propulsion plants, have been shared by the U.S. Navy and commercial ship operators. Recent events such as the British Falkland Islands crisis and the implementation of the U.S. …

Development Of Dynamic Testing Machine For Laboratory Modeling Of The Rock Fracturing Phenomenon, Mohammad Ali Moghaddass Zadeh Kermani Dec 1984

Development Of Dynamic Testing Machine For Laboratory Modeling Of The Rock Fracturing Phenomenon, Mohammad Ali Moghaddass Zadeh Kermani

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a dynamic testing machine for laboratory modeling of the rock fracturing phenomenon. Bearing stratum fracturing is a construction difficulty which occurs when end-bearing piles are driven to weak rock or weathered sound rock. It is a pile group effect and can result in significantly less pile carrying capacity than the final driving resistance would normally indicate.

A linear scaling factor was derived to establish similitude between the laboratory apparatus and field conditions. This scaling factor is approximate and was used for overall sizing of the apparatus and its components. A more exact …

Mathematical Simulation Of Proteins Separation In A Packed Bed, Jing James Huang Oct 1984

Mathematical Simulation Of Proteins Separation In A Packed Bed, Jing James Huang

Dissertations

The generalized adsorption models are developed to simulate the unsteady state mass transfer behavior in a packed column. Based on the nature of adsorbent particles, the adsorption models may be classified into two categories: (1) the surface adsorption model, (2) the pore diffusion model. In the first model, it is assumed that the internal diffusion is negligible, and the adsorption rate is determined by external diffusion and surface adsorption. In the second model, the effect of internal diffusion is considered as significant as that of external diffusion. For both models, the effect of axial dispersion in fluid phase is emphasized. …

Mathematical Modeling Of Carrier Mediated Mass Transfer Through Liquid Membrane Systems, Keng Chao Wang Oct 1984

Mathematical Modeling Of Carrier Mediated Mass Transfer Through Liquid Membrane Systems, Keng Chao Wang

Dissertations

Dispersed liquid membrane systems are double emulsion drops. Two immiscible phases are separated by a third phase which is immiscible with the other two phases. The liquid membrane systems were classified into three types: (1) carrier mediated mass transfer, (2) mass transfer with reaction in the receiving phase, (3) mass transfer without any reaction involved. Copper extraction, phenol removal and solvent extraction were used as typical examples for each type of the membrane systems in the derivation of their mathematical models. Models with or without the consideration of film resistances were developed and compared. The models developed in this study …

Stress In The Alveolar Bone Surrounding A Dental Implant, Jagmohan Singh Kohli Oct 1984

Stress In The Alveolar Bone Surrounding A Dental Implant, Jagmohan Singh Kohli

Theses

The purpose of this study is to find the stresses developed in mandibular bone due to the occlusal loading of oral endosseous blade implants. Previous work done in this area was based on the theory of "Beam on Elastic Foundation". As the width/length ratio employed is approximately 0.65, the theory of "Plate on Elastic Foundation" used in this thesis is more appropriate. The mandibular bone acts as the foundation supporting the endosseous implants.

The analysis is complicated by the fact that the implants are irregular plates of varying thickness, the foundation modulus is a variable and the occlusal loading is …
