A Practical Approach To Automated Software Correctness Enhancement, Aleksandr Zakharchenko Dec 2021

A Practical Approach To Automated Software Correctness Enhancement, Aleksandr Zakharchenko

Dissertations

To repair an incorrect program does not mean to make it correct; it only means to make it more-correct, in some sense, than it is. In the absence of a concept of relative correctness, i.e. the property of a program to be more-correct than another with respect to a specification, the discipline of program repair has resorted to various approximations of absolute (traditional) correctness, with varying degrees of success. This shortcoming is concealed by the fact that most program repair tools are tested on basic cases, whence making them absolutely correct is not clearly distinguishable from making them relatively more-correct. …

Scalable Scientific Data Management On High-Performance Computing Systems, Zhenbo Qiao Dec 2021

Scalable Scientific Data Management On High-Performance Computing Systems, Zhenbo Qiao

Dissertations

As high-performance computing (HPC) is being scaled up to exascale to accommodate new modeling and simulation needs, I/O has continued to be a major bottleneck in the end-to-end scientific processes. To bridge the widening gap between compute and I/O, and enable data to be more efficiently stored and analyzed, simulation outputs need to be refactored, reduced, and appropriately mapped to storage tiers. Also, a major question that the community is striving to answer is how to co-design data storage and complex physics-rich analytics in a way that the time to knowledge can be minimized in post-processing. As HPC storage systems …

Hydrodynamic Characterization Of Laboratory And Production Equipment For Pharmaceutical Testing And Manufacturing Using Experimental And Computational Approaches, Chadakarn Sirasitthichoke

Dissertations

The hydrodynamics of process units used in pharmaceutical industry, i.e., the distribution of velocity profiles and shear stresses within the vessel, often controls the process performance, significantly affecting product quality. The hydrodynamics is strongly influenced by several factors such as the vessel shape, stirrer type, presence of internals and baffles, agitation intensity, and liquid properties. Most of these parameters can be varied by the process designers and the operators to achieve the desired process outcomes. The impact of the hydrodynamics on the process outcome can be profound in both large vessels (e.g., reactors) and smaller vessels (e.g., dissolution vessels), involving …

Design And Learning-Based Decoding Of Low-Density-Parity-Check Codes For Multiterminal Communication, Salman Habib Dec 2021

Design And Learning-Based Decoding Of Low-Density-Parity-Check Codes For Multiterminal Communication, Salman Habib

Dissertations

The field of information theory was initiated by Claude Shannon in 1948. According to his most notable work, data can be transmitted reliably over a noisy communication channel with high probability, as long as a suitable coding scheme is employed to protect the data from channel noise. Since then, coding theorists have made numerous attempts to design low-complexity error correcting schemes which achieve the Shannon limit.

In the 1960s, Robert Gallager introduced sparse graph-based low-density-parity-check (LDPC) codes which are practically suitable for various coding applications, mainly due to their low encoding and decoding complexity compared to classical codes (e.g., Reed-Muller …

Gradient Free Sign Activation Zero One Loss Neural Networks For Adversarially Robust Classification, Yunzhe Xue Aug 2021

Gradient Free Sign Activation Zero One Loss Neural Networks For Adversarially Robust Classification, Yunzhe Xue

Dissertations

The zero-one loss function is less sensitive to outliers than convex surrogate losses such as hinge and cross-entropy. However, as a non-convex function, it has a large number of local minima, andits undifferentiable attribute makes it impossible to use backpropagation, a method widely used in training current state-of-the-art neural networks. When zero-one loss is applied to deep neural networks, the entire training process becomes challenging. On the other hand, a massive non-unique solution probably also brings different decision boundaries when optimizing zero-one loss, making it possible to fight against transferable adversarial examples, which is a common weakness in deep learning …

Towards Understanding The Role Of Central Processing In Release From Masking, Nima Alamatsaz Aug 2021

Towards Understanding The Role Of Central Processing In Release From Masking, Nima Alamatsaz

Dissertations

People with normal hearing have the ability to listen to a desired target sound while filtering out unwanted sounds in the background. However, most patients with hearing impairment struggle in noisy environments, a perceptual deficit which current hearing aids and cochlear implants cannot resolve. Even though peripheral dysfunction of the ears undoubtedly contribute to this deficit, surmounting evidence has implicated central processing in the inability to detect sounds in background noise. Therefore, it is essential to better understand the underlying neural mechanisms by which target sounds are dissociated from competing maskers. This research focuses on two phenomena that help suppress …

Constructive Solution Methodologies To The Capacitated Newsvendor Problem And Surrogate Extension, Pinyuan Shan Aug 2021

Constructive Solution Methodologies To The Capacitated Newsvendor Problem And Surrogate Extension, Pinyuan Shan

Dissertations

The newsvendor problem is a single-period stochastic model used to determine the order quantity of perishable product that maximizes/minimizes the profit/cost of the vendor under uncertain demand. The goal is to fmd an initial order quantity that can offset the impact of backlog or shortage caused by mismatch between the procurement amount and uncertain demand. If there are multiple products and substitution between them is feasible, overstocking and understocking can be further reduced and hence, the vendor's overall profit is improved compared to the standard problem. When there are one or more resource constraints, such as budget, volume or weight, …

Learning Of Radar System For Target Detection, Wei Jiang Aug 2021

Learning Of Radar System For Target Detection, Wei Jiang

Dissertations

In this dissertation, the problem of data-driven joint design of transmitted waveform and detector in a radar system is addressed. Two novel learning-based approaches to waveform and detector design are proposed based on end-to-end training of the radar system. The first approach consists of alternating supervised training of the detector for a fixed waveform and reinforcement learning of the transmitter for a fixed detector. In the second approach, the transmitter and detector are trained simultaneously. Various operational waveform constraints, such as peak-to-average-power ratio (PAR) and spectral compatibility, are incorporated into the design. Unlike traditional radar design methods that rely on …

Temporal Evolution Of Structure And Function In The Periphery And Central Auditory Systems With Mild Blast Induced Tinnitus In Rat Animal Models, Ningning Shao

Dissertations

Exposure to blast causes debilitating trauma including tinnitus among soldiers and civilians (Cave et al., 2007; Remenschneider et al., 2014; Singh et al., 2016). Tinnitus is a constant ringing noise perception without external acoustic event; it affects sleep, concentration, behavior, leading to suicidal tendencies (Swan et al., 2017). Though blast induced tinnitus has been studied, structural and functional dysfunctions along auditory systems have not been systematically studied. It was hypothesized in this work that blast causes tinnitus even while the ears are mechanically protected, and the damage occurred in both central and peripheral auditory systems, which contributed to increased anxiety …
