Characterization Of Mismatch Between Behavioral Stimuli And Frmi Data Using The Kalman Filter, Jason Steffener May 2005

Characterization Of Mismatch Between Behavioral Stimuli And Frmi Data Using The Kalman Filter, Jason Steffener

Dissertations

The advance of blood oxygen level dependent function magnetic resonance imaging, (BOLD fMRI), allows researchers to non-invasively investigate the functioning human brain. The BOLD fMRI response to brief stimuli is called the hemodynamic response function (HRF), which can vary across brain regions and across subjects.

Models of the HRF are used to increase sensitivity of statistical maps; however, they often don't account for spatial and temporal variance. Physiological effects, such as learning, fatigue or habituation, introduce mismatch between statistical models and the data. Methods that use minimal a priori information and track time varying signals are able to show the …

Utility Of Remote Sensing Data In Retrieval Of Water Quality Consituents Concentrations In Coastal Water Of New Jersey, Ting Yu May 2005

Utility Of Remote Sensing Data In Retrieval Of Water Quality Consituents Concentrations In Coastal Water Of New Jersey, Ting Yu

Dissertations

Three important optical properties used for monitoring coastal water quality are the concentrations of chlorophyll (CHL), color dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and total suspended materials (TSM). Ocean color remote sensing, a technique to collect color data by detection of upward radiance from a distance (Bukata et al.,1995), provides a synoptic view for determining these concentrations from upwelling radiances. In the open ocean (Case-I), it is not difficult to derive empirical algorithms relating the received radiances to surface concentrations of water quality parameters. In coastal waters (Case-Il), there are serious unresolved problems in extracting chlorophyll concentration because of high concentration of …

Tcp Performance Enhancement In Wireless Networks Via Adaptive Congestion Control And Active Queue Management, Kai Xu May 2005

Tcp Performance Enhancement In Wireless Networks Via Adaptive Congestion Control And Active Queue Management, Kai Xu

Dissertations

The transmission control protocol (TCP) exhibits poor performance when used in error-prone wireless networks. Remedy to this problem has been an active research area. However, a widely accepted and adopted solution is yet to emerge. Difficulties of an acceptable solution lie in the areas of compatibility, scalability, computational complexity and the involvement of intermediate routers and switches.

This dissertation rexriews the current start-of-the-art solutions to TCP performance enhancement, and pursues an end-to-end solution framework to the problem. The most noticeable cause of the performance degradation of TCP in wireless networks is the higher packet loss rate as compared to that …

Planar Visual Fusion Scintigraphy, Jacob Puthiamadathil May 2005

Planar Visual Fusion Scintigraphy, Jacob Puthiamadathil

Theses

Planar scintigraphy, while providing useful information about the distribution of the radiopharmaceutical being used, often does not provide adequate information about the surrounding anatomical structures. A proposed method to solve this problem is by registering and fusing a scintigraphic image with a digital visual image. Fusing planar scintigraphic images with visual photographic images to supply an anatomic correlate to regions of radiopharmaceutical accumulation has been explored in this study. The digital visual image will provide a context for the relevant structures in the scintigraphic image. The validity of using one set of affine transformation parameters for registering all patient data …

Cluster-Based Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Network Security, Mandur Bajra Bajracharya May 2005

Cluster-Based Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Network Security, Mandur Bajra Bajracharya

Theses

A wireless ad-hoc network is a cooperative communication network deployed with a specific purpose. It is characterized by dynamically changing topology with no fixed infrastructure which exhibits a perfectly vulnerable state for a number of different kinds of attacks.

This thesis proposes a novel technique of achieving security in wireless mobile ad hoc networks by integrating a simple clustering and a voting mechanism together. The purpose of forming a cluster is to facilitate security in the network and the voting is performed to support the decision making process in the cluster. A procedure of forming small homogenous clusters throughout the …

Relationship Between The Autonomic Nervous System And The Recovering Heart Post Exercise Using Heart Rate Variability, Pierre Asselin May 2005

Relationship Between The Autonomic Nervous System And The Recovering Heart Post Exercise Using Heart Rate Variability, Pierre Asselin

Theses

The goal of this thesis is to determine if a relationship exists between the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the speed of heart rate recovery post maximal exercise. The parasympathetic branch of the ANS was assessed during rest by obtaining the high frequency (HF) component of the heart rate variability (HRV) frequency spectrum. The recovery time was estimated by fitting an exponential curve to the heart rate post exercise where the exponent was used to calculate the time constant to indicate recovery time. A regression was then performed on the HF and recovery time in order to …

Stereo Vision Algorithm Using Propagation Of Correspondences Along An Array Of Cameras, Danyan Ganjali May 2005

Stereo Vision Algorithm Using Propagation Of Correspondences Along An Array Of Cameras, Danyan Ganjali

Theses

One well known problem in stereo vision is the trade-off between precision and accuracy.

In a conventional two camera model, as the baseline separating the two cameras becomes smaller, the images that both cameras produce become more identical. This results in a more accurate set of correspondences, however at the same time causing less precise depth measurement due to the small angle used for triangulation. Similarly, in a larger baseline model, the depth measurement is more precise while the correspondences are not as accurate as of the shorter baseline model. This thesis proposes a method that promises to solve the …

Evaluation Of Unifac Group Interaction Parameters Usijng Properties Based On Quantum Mechanical Calculations, Hansan Kim May 2005

Evaluation Of Unifac Group Interaction Parameters Usijng Properties Based On Quantum Mechanical Calculations, Hansan Kim

Theses

Current group-contribution methods such as ASOG and UNIFAC are widely used for approximate estimation of mixture behavior but unable to distinguish between isomers. Atoms in Molecules (AIM) theory can solve these problems by using quantum mechanics and computational chemistry to compute atomic contributions to molecular properties and to intermolecular interactions. Rigorously defined properties available through AIM theory and new functional group definitions are used for the UNIFAC model to predict the behavior of various mixtures. Results are presented for various mixtures with nine regressed global parameters to optimize model's predictive capability. The results are also compared to analogous results for …

Theses

McKibben muscles are pneumatic actuators that have potential application in the rehabilitation of persons with physical impairments. These actuators have been known to exhibit similarities in human musculoskeletal systems. In order to better understand and improve the closed - loop control of these pneumatic muscles, a physical joint model was constructed with an agonist and an antagonist muscle operating under non-linear control. With the use of LabVIEW software, compliant McKibben air muscles and Flock-of-Birds sensor, the author was able to implement and compare a standard bang-bang controller and experimental non-linear digital Proportional (P) controller. The feedback mechanism is based on …

Ambulatory Biopotential Measurement, Lakshmi Chitra Penugonda May 2005

Ambulatory Biopotential Measurement, Lakshmi Chitra Penugonda

Theses

Biopotential signals measure the electrical activity of different parts of the body. Conventional bedside monitors only provide information about the body under restricted conditions. Observation and documentation of biopotential signal during daily activities and the relation to patient symptoms may be important factors for clinical decision-making. Ambulatory monitoring helps to monitor the biopotential signal of a patient in the natural environment. The effective ambulatory system can help a physician to diagnose the patient's abnormality.

In this project, a low cost and flexible ambulatory biopotential system, compared to the commercially available systems, was designed and tested. Concurrently a software program was …

Difference-Expansion Based Reversible Data Hiding And Its Steganalysis, Guangsen Tian May 2005

Difference-Expansion Based Reversible Data Hiding And Its Steganalysis, Guangsen Tian

Theses

A novel reversible data embedding method was reported in a recent IEEE journal article. The method was based on difference expansion (DE) technique. It used redundancy in digital images to achieve a high embedding capacity, while keeping visual distortion of the stego-image low. In this thesis, this technique was studied and experimentally evaluated. An effective steganalysis scheme for this DE-based reversible data embedding method was proposed, which used 12-dimensional feature vectors and a Bayes Classifier. The proposed steganalysis scheme steadily achieved a correct classification rate of 99%.

Evaluation Of Knox Group Contribution Parameters Using Quantum Based Molecular And Group Properties, Myriam Carrillo May 2005

Evaluation Of Knox Group Contribution Parameters Using Quantum Based Molecular And Group Properties, Myriam Carrillo

Theses

Thermodynamic property prediction through the group contribution methods has been improving. However, the approaches considered in the past present not only limitations on the physical basis but often have restrictions as to certain substances, such as isomers. A new group contribution method is proposed that uses AIM theory, which is based on computational chemistry and quantum mechanics, to overcome these limitations by treating each molecule individually. An evaluation of this method as applied to the Knox model is proposed and analyzed for Vapor Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) of mixtures with the help of nine global parameters that are obtained by correlation. …

On Performance Analysis Of Optimal Diversity Combining With Imperfect Channel Estimation, Yong Peng May 2005

On Performance Analysis Of Optimal Diversity Combining With Imperfect Channel Estimation, Yong Peng

Theses

The optimal diversity combining technique is investigated for multipath Rayleigh and Ricean fading channel with additive white Gaussian noise where only imperfect channel knowledge is available at the receiver. The non-observable estimation error contributes as an additive source of noise which is not white. Therefore, the optimal combining weight is derived taking into consideration the imperfect channel knowledge.

The bit error rate for BPSK modulation over correlated Rayleigh and Ricean fading channel is derived for minimum mean square channel estimation using pilot symbol assisted modulation. Analytical result and Monte-Carlo simulation are presented for specific channel and estimation models to demonstrate …

Enabling Cost Aware Routing With Auctions In Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, Ali Yuksel May 2005

Enabling Cost Aware Routing With Auctions In Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, Ali Yuksel

Theses

Battery power is a precious resource in wireless ad-hoc networks, and most routing protocols that have been proposed so far do not generate cost efficient routes. In this thesis, a novel auction-based cost-aware routing scheme, called CARA, is presented. CARA is designed as an extension of the MAC layer, and is shown to improve the cost efficiency of existing ad-hoc routing protocols through dynamic power control, while introducing only minimal additional overhead. The MAC layer at each node is given the capability to run local sealed-bid second-price auctions for the user data packets that need to be transmitted, and to …

Turbo Space-Time Coding For Mimo Systems : Designs And Analyses, Hangjun Chen Jan 2005

Turbo Space-Time Coding For Mimo Systems : Designs And Analyses, Hangjun Chen

Dissertations

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems can provide high diversity, high data rate or a mix of both, for wireless communications. This dissertation combines both modes and suggests analyses and techniques that advance the state of the art of MIMO systems. Specifically, this dissertation studies turbo space-time coding schemes for MIMO systems.

Before the designs of turbo space-time codes are presented, a fundamental tool to analyze and design turbo coding schemes, the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart method, is extended from the binary/nonbinary code case to coded modulation case. This extension prepares the convergence analysis for turbo space-time code.

Turbo …

Experimental Technique For Studying High-Temperature Phase Equilibria In Reactive Molten Metal Based Systems, Alexandre Ermoline Jan 2005

Experimental Technique For Studying High-Temperature Phase Equilibria In Reactive Molten Metal Based Systems, Alexandre Ermoline

Dissertations

The general objective of this work is to develop an experimental technique for studying the high-temperature phase compositions and phase equilibria in molten metal-based binary and ternary systems, such as Zr-O-N, B-N-O, Al-O, and others. A specific material system of Zr-O-N was selected for studying and testing this technique.

The information about the high-temperature phase equilibria in reactive metal-based systems is scarce and their studying is difficult because of chemical reactions occurring between samples and essentially any container materials, and causing contamination of the system.

Containerless microgravity experiments for studying equilibria in molten metal-gas systems were designed to be conducted …

Congestion Control In Resilient Packet Ring Networks, Alharbi Fahd Jan 2005

Congestion Control In Resilient Packet Ring Networks, Alharbi Fahd

Dissertations

The Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is a new metro technology; RPR shares SONET's ability in providing fast recovery from link and node failures as well as inherits the cost and simplicity of Ethernet. RPR, like SONET/SDH, is a ring based architecture consisting of two optical rotating rings (uni-directional). In RPR, packets are removed from the ring at the destination so that different segments of the ring can be used at the same time for different flows; as a result, the spatial reuse feature is achieved. Enabling the spatial reuse feature introduces the challenge of guaranteeing fairness among the nodes sharing …

The Feasibility Of Micromachined Dynamic Resonant Beam Coriolis True Mass Flow Meter, Sang Hwui Lee

Dissertations

The technological advances of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) in the past two decades have been remarkable for innovations in microfluidic systems as well as automotive applications such as pressure sensors and accelerometers. MEMS flow sensing has emerged as a field of interest in microfluidics, with a variety of sensing methods being miniaturized, such as thermal anemometry, ultrasonic sensing and flow measurement based on the Coriolis effect. Coriolis sensing is particularly attractive since, unlike most other methods which provide volumetric flow information, Coriolis sensing is capable of providing a direct, true mass flow measurement. Because of this advantage, Coriolis flow sensing has …

When deposited as a film on steel substrates by sputtering, either α-Ta, β-Ta, or a mixture of both phases have been observed under varying deposition conditions. To evaluate corrosion behavior of Ta coatings, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization were conducted as a function of coating thickness. The coating porosity was observed to decrease with increasing coating thickness …

Image Data Hiding, Zhicheng Ni Jan 2005

Image Data Hiding, Zhicheng Ni

Dissertations

Image data hiding represents a class of processes used to embed data into cover images.

Robustness is one of the basic requirements for image data hiding. In the first part of this dissertation, 2D and 3D interleaving techniques associated with error-correction-code (ECC) are proposed to significantly improve the robustness of hidden data against burst errors.

In most cases, the cover image cannot be inverted back to the original image after the hidden data are retrieved. In this dissertation, one novel reversible (lossless) data hiding technique is then introduced. This technique is based on the histogram modification, which can embed a …

Bus Arrival Time Prediction Using Stochastic Time Series And Markov Chains, Rajat Rajbhandari Jan 2005

Bus Arrival Time Prediction Using Stochastic Time Series And Markov Chains, Rajat Rajbhandari

Dissertations

Public transit agencies rely on disseminating accurate and reliable information to transit users to achieve higher service quality and attract more users. With the development of new technologies, the concept of providing users with reliable information about bus arrival times at bus stops has become increasingly attractive. Due to the fact that bus operation parameters and variables are highly stochastic, modeling prediction of bus travel and arrival times has become one of the many challenging tasks.

Stochastic time series and delay propagation models to predict bus arrival times using historical information were developed. Markov models were developed to predict propagation …

Uniaxial And Triaxial Behavior Of High Strength Concrete With And Without Steel Fibers, Xiaobin Lu Jan 2005

Uniaxial And Triaxial Behavior Of High Strength Concrete With And Without Steel Fibers, Xiaobin Lu

Dissertations

This study first presents an extensive experimental research program on the true uniaxial and triaxial compression behavior for both high strength concrete (HSC) and steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete (SFHSC). The experimental study mainly focuses on the octahedral shear stress strain relationship of those two types of concrete, which is adopted as the basis to develop a new incremental constitutive model. Emphasis is also put on the investigation of the variation of tangent Poisson's ratio under not only uniaxial but also triaxial stress conditions. The effect of cyclic loading on this parameter is also addressed.

According to this research, …

Development And Application Of Fractionation Procedure For Drinking Water Organic Matters, Yong Pu Jan 2005

Development And Application Of Fractionation Procedure For Drinking Water Organic Matters, Yong Pu

Dissertations

USEPA mandates a control of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in finished drinking water and recommends reduction of natural organic matters (NOM), DBP precursors, to achieve this regulatory goal. Studies relating NOM with DBP include fractionation of water samples, characterization of collected organic fractions, fractions' formation potential tests, and jar or similar tests to remove NOM. This study discussed a current resin fractionation procedure on principle, procedure, and its efficiency when applied to water samples of low NOM (< 5mgIL). The primary objective of this research is to develop a fractionation procedure intended for water of low NOM by carefully applying mass balance concept through each fraction's fractionation and a selection of stable ion exchange resins. A new protocol was presented with triple columns of XAD-8 adsorption resin, one column of AG-MP-50 cationic resin, and another column of WA 10 weak anionic resin in sequence. This protocol was experimented and confirmed for its efficiency (±10% loss of mass) with samples from Canal Road (CR) and Raritan Millstone (RM) surface water treatment plants (WTPs) in central New Jersey. The second objective of this study is to develop a statistical model with a potential of online delineation of organic fractions of NOM. The resulting model based on samples of Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) WTP in northern New Jersey was applied to predict organic fractions of samples from CR and RM plants. Paired T-test (paired t ratio 1.15 < t critical 2.02) indicated a good correlation between the predicted and actual fraction concentration. Finally, samples of Middlesex Water Company (MWC) were fractionated and Trihalomethane formation potential tests (THMFP) on collected fraction showed hydrophilic matters possessed a higher potential to produce TTHM in finished water than hydrophobic matter. Jar tests indicated while coagulation was effective in removing hydrophobic matter, it may not be optimum for removal of hydrophilic matter.

This study developed an accurate fractionation procedure for low NOM waters. It provided a better understanding of organic matter transformation at different treatment …

Tide-Influenced Contaminant Transport In Coastal Aquifers, Yong Peng Jan 2005

Tide-Influenced Contaminant Transport In Coastal Aquifers, Yong Peng

Dissertations

Coastal aquifers are distinguished from other aquifers because of tidal effects which cause complicated groundwater flow and contaminant transport phenomena in regions immediately adjacent to the coast. This study is designed to address the significance of tidal influence on contaminant transport by focusing on one-dimensional homogeneous coastal aquifers.

This study formulates a conceptual model and corresponding flow and transport equations, analyzes coastal boundary conditions, solves numerically the transport equation, and uses experiments to verify the numerical results.

Results of numerical and experimental studies conclude that tides can have a significant impact on contaminant transport, especially when under unconfined conditions, subject …
