The ability to predict mass flow behavior during hot rolling is essential to product quality. In this study, viscoplastic models of the steels from SSAB and U.S. Steel were developed based on experimental stress-strain curves. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model was built to simulate a reverse plate hot rolling and a hot strip rolling process. For plate rolling, a seven pass schedule was simulated. The plastic strain distributions during rolling were investigated. The results show that the surface of the plate has larger plastic strain than the center. In the case of hot strip rolling, the simulation predicts that …

Careful evaluation of the toxicological response of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) as a function of physicochemical properties can aid in the design of safe platforms for biomedical applications including drug delivery. Typically, in vitro ENM cytotoxicity assessments are performed under conventional static cell culture conditions. However, such conditions do not take into account the sedimentation rate of ENMs. Herein, we synthesized four types of similar size silica nanoparticles (SNPs) with modified surface roughness, charge, and density and characterized their cytotoxicity under static and dynamic conditions. Influence of particle density on sedimentation and diffusion velocities were studied by comparing solid dense silica …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, target hunting aims to detect target and surround the detected target in a surface-water using Multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (multi-AUV) in a given area. The main challenge in multi-AUV target hunting is the design of AUV's motion path and coordination mechanism. To conduct the cooperative target hunting by multi-AUV in a surface-water environment, an integrated algorithm based on improved potential field (IPF) is proposed. First, a potential field function is established according to the information of the surface-water environment. Then, the dispersion degree, the homodromous degree, and district-difference degree are introduced to increase the cooperation of the …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Among Dissociation Methods, Negative Electron Transfer Dissociation (NETD) Has Been Proven the Most Useful for Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) Sequencing Because It Produces Informative Fragmentation, a Low Degree of Sulfate Losses, High Sensitivity, and Translatability to Multiple Instrument Types. the Challenge, However, is to Distinguish Positional Sulfation. in Particular, NETD Has Been Reported to Fail to Differentiate 4-O- Versus 6-O-Sulfation in Chondroitin Sulfate Decasaccharide. This Raised the Concern of Whether NETD is Able to Differentiate the Rare 3-O-Sulfation from Predominant 6-O-Sulfation in Heparan Sulfate (HS) Oligosaccharides. Here, We Report that NETD Generates Highly Informative Spectra that Differentiate Sites of O-Sulfation on Glucosamine …

Generation Of Three-Dimensional Optical Cusp Beams With Ultrathin Metasurfaces, Weiwei Liu, Yuchao Zhang, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cusp beams are one type of complex structured beams with unique multiple self-accelerating channels and needle-like field structures owning great potentials to advance applications such as particle micromanipulation and super-resolution imaging. The traditional method to generate optical catastrophe is based on cumbrous reflective diffraction optical elements, which makes optical system complicated and hinders the nanophotonics integration. Here we design geometric phase based ultrathin plasmonic metasurfaces made of nanoslit antennas to produce three-dimensional (3D) optical cusp beams with variable numbers of self-accelerating channels in a broadband wavelength range. The entire beam propagation profiles of the cusp beams generated from the metasurfaces …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Different laboratory experimental setups with slotted disks, simulating fractures' apertures, have been used extensively to formulate effective loss circulation materials (LCM) recipes. The amount of fluid loss and sealing pressure have been used as the evaluation criteria. The question still remains is how valuable these tests are when LCM fluids are circulated in the wellbore to stop losses. The main objective of this work is to study the effect of the annular fluid flow on building an LCM bridge at the fracture aperture. To address the objective, a fluid loss apparatus has been developed to mimic wellbore circulation. Tapered slotted …

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a modern approach to identify and track several assets at once in a supply chain environment. In many RFID applications, tagged items are frequently transferred from one owner to another. Thus, there is a need for secure ownership transfer (OT) protocols that can perform the transfer while, at the same time, protect the privacy of owners. Several protocols have been proposed in an attempt to fulfill this requirement. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive and systematic review of the RFID OT protocols that appeared over the years of 2005-2018. In addition, we compare these …

Beam Scanning Realized By Coupled Modes In A Single-Patch Antenna, Haozhan Tian, Kirti Dhwaj, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, we introduce a novel beam scanning in a single-rectangular-patch antenna realized by coupled modes. The design exhibits radiated beams that scan as a function of frequency but is different in its operation mechanism compared to a traditional leaky-wave antenna. The idea is to manipulate the phase difference between the fields at two radiating slots of the antenna to reform the beam. Metal vias are introduced to create two coupled half-mode cavities in the patch antenna. The mutual coupling between the two cavities makes the phase difference as a function of the operating frequency. The simulated beam scans …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effect of the addition of carbon on phase formations in AlxCoCrFeNiCu (x = 0.3, 1.5, 2.8) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) was studied. Free diffusion of carbon from graphite crucible resulted in the partitioning of the entire Cr from the matrix and the formation of the (Cr,Fe)23C6 phase in all HEAs. No other metal-carbide phase was detected. The formation of (Cr,Fe)23C6 enhanced the overall hardness of the HEAs. By increasing the amount of Al, the Cr amount decreased resulting in the reduction of carbon diffusion and volume fraction of the (Cr,Fe)23C6 …

Graphene plasmonics have attracted significant attention in the past few years due to the remarkable optical and electrical properties of graphene. A highly effective method based on surface integral equations (SIE) in the frequency domain is proposed to describe both linear and nonlinear effects of graphene efficiently and accurately. Graphene, a centrosymmet-ric material, can possess second harmonic generation (SHG) when the conductivity is nonlocal. In this work, the fundamental harmonic (FH) of a graphene wrapped particle is studied as the first benchmark by introducing a conducting surface in SIE. Then it is modified to analyze a graphene-based patch antenna in …

Electro spun poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) fiber scaffolds are used to direct axonal extension in neural engineering models. We aimed to improve the efficacy of these fibers in promoting neurite outgrowth by altering surface topography and reducing fiber elastic modulus through the incorporation of a compatibilized blend, poly-l-lactic acid-poly(pentadecalactone) (PLLA-PPDL) into the solution prior to electrospinning. PLLA+PLLA-PPDL fibers had a larger diameter, increased surface nano topography, and lower glass transition temperature than PLLA fibers but had similar mechanical properties. Increases in neurite outgrowth on PLLA+PLLA-PPDL fibers were observed, potentially due to the significantly increased diameter and surface coverage with nano topography. …

Flexural Rigidity Evaluation Of Seismic Performance Of Hollow-Core Composite Bridge Columns, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates experimentally the seismic behavior of two hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer-concrete-steel HC-FCS columns under cyclic loading as a cantilever. The typical precast HC-FCS member consists of a concrete wall sandwiched between an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube. The FRP tube provides continuous confinement for the concrete wall along the height of the column. Five large-scale HC-FCS columns were investigated during this study to estimate the effective flexural (which is an important factor to define the buckling capacity and deflection of such columns) and the effective structural stiffness of the composite columns. These columns have …

Research Of A Non-Linearity Control Algorithm For Uav Target Tracking Based On Fuzzy Logic Systems, Chaoying Pei, Jingjuan Zhang, Xueyun Wang, Qian Zhang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Target tracking is one of the most widely used applications of UAVs and visual based tracking is the main method for non-cooperative tracking. In non-cooperative tracking missions, the UAV circles around the target and the gimbal rotates to keep the optic axis of the onboard camera pointing to the target. Compared with the biaxial gimbal, the single-axis gimbal system consists of only one torque motor, forming a great lightweight sensor suite, which also increases the requirement of the control accuracy. In the process of tracking moving target using a UAV with single-axis gimbal, there are still several challenges: (1) The …
