Experimental Study Of Process Parameter Effects On Internal Defects In Titanium Coaxial Wire-Based Laser Metal Deposition, Remy Mathenia, Braden Mclain, Todd Sparks, Frank Liou

Wire-based laser metal deposition is an additive manufacturing process that can be used in the efficient manufacturing of complex structures. This paper utilizes a three-beam coaxial laser wire system to explore the effect of process parameters on the resultant deposition density. The reduction in or elimination of defects is important to the mechanical properties of the additively manufactured material and the widespread adoption of additive manufacturing processes. In this work, two-bead-wide walls were deposited under varying experimental conditions, including the traverse feed rate and workpiece illumination proportion. A method for calculating the bead pitch and layer height increment based on …

High Friction Surface Treatments (HFSTs) are frequently used to increase skid resistance and reduce collisions, particularly in crash-prone zones, including horizontal curves and intersections. Epoxy-based binders traditionally have been the sole option for HFSTs, but their drawbacks, such as high costs and compatibility challenges, have led to the search for substitute binders, including asphalt-based options. This study investigates the comparative performance of highly modified asphalt-based binders, including polymer-modified, mastic, and highly modified emulsions, in HFST applications using two aggregate types, Calcined Bauxite (CB) and Rhyolite with different gradations, with an emphasis on their frictional properties, durability, and resistance to polishing. …

Cooperative and bifunctional materials (BFMs) that integrate adsorbents and catalysts offer a promising strategy for the reactive capture of CO2 to produce valuable fuels and chemicals. In this study, we developed structured BFMs via 3D printing that combine CaO as an adsorbent with Ga–Ca–Cr2O3 metal oxides as the catalyst for the reactive capture of CO2 and its subsequent conversion to C2H4 via the oxidative dehydrogenation of C2H6 (CO2-ODHE). Three different Ga–Ca compositions were used to modify the catalyst surface characteristics and enhance C2H4 selectivity. …

Oxidation kinetics and oxide scale microstructures were compared for ZrB2-30 vol% SiC composites fabricated by hot press sintering of powders and by pressure less sintering of additively manufactured billets. Oxidation in CO2 was conducted at temperatures up to 1400 °C with durations up to 900 h. All specimens exhibited parabolic oxidation kinetics. Materials with similar composition but different processing histories exhibited differences in oxidation behavior that become evident at extended durations (200–900 h) and higher temperatures (1200–1400 °C). Oxidation rates generally increased with grain size, e.g., at 1000 °C for 200 h, oxide scale thickness increased from 36 to …

Using first principles calculations, {111} intrinsic stacking fault (ISF) energies in groups IVB, VB, and VIB high-entropy transition metal carbides (HETMCs) are shown to be predictable from an optimized rule of mixtures based on the atomic arrangement near the stacking fault. A composition-independent linear relationship is demonstrated between the ISF energies and the unstable stacking fault (USF) energies along the (112¯){111} γsurface slip path. This relationship represents a new application of the Evans-Polanyi-Semenov principle by treating the ISF and USF energies as analogous to the heat of reaction and transition state barrier in chemical reactions. Further, a full defect energy …

Precise displacement measurement is essential for engineering, industrial, and scientific purposes. Ultrafast laser techniques are preferred for real-time applications due to their single-shot measurement capability and high resolution. To create a high-performance and cost-effective system with less complexity, capable of achieving real-time measurement with high micrometer spatial resolution, we have used a picosecond pulsed laser at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.5 μm in combination with dispersive interferometry. The instantaneous frequency measurement took place using the time-stretch technique incorporating dispersion compensating fiber induced chirp. Results using a 7-picosecond laser at 1.5 μm with a 10 MHz repetition rate are presented. Frequency …

Phosphate cement materials are ideal binders for the rapid repairment of civil engineering and solidification/stabilization of hazardous solid wastes due to their fast setting, high early strength and strong adhesion. However, the use of pure metal oxides as the raw base materials and their deactive pretreatment result in the high cost and energy consumption, limiting its broad applications. In this study, an eco-friendly polymetal phosphate cement (PMPC) was developed using tin fuming furnace slag (TFFS) as the primary base material. The hydration behavior, microstructure, mechanical properties, and environmental safety of PMPC were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the hydration …

The hormone 17β-estradiol (estrogen or "E2") has demonstrated robust neuroprotective properties in countering oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity, as well as strong neurotrophic properties to promote axonal growth, following injury to the central nervous system (CNS). However, oral or injected E2 is a suboptimal drug, as systemic administration fails to achieve a therapeutic dose at the injury site, in addition to being contraindicated in most male patients. Polymerized pro-drug biomaterials can mitigate these issues by locally releasing small quantities of drug over vastly extended timescales. We sought to study the effect of the biomaterial properties of poly(pro-E2) on astrocyte-surface interactions because astrocytes …

Calcination of limestone, a high temperature (∼900 °C) process that emits 44 % of the mass of limestone as CO2, is a critical process in the production of many industrially important materials. To soften the CO2-related impacts of traditional calcination, and to enable ultrafast synthesis of lime, a novel approach based on self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) has been put forward. SHS uses exothermic heat released by the combustion of fuel intermixed with the reactants to advance the reaction, and hence requires the provision of lower external temperatures. This study introduces a microstructure-guided modeling approach to understand …

An ultra-high temperature ceramic based on ZrB2, TiB2, and SiC was hot pressed to full density at 1850 °C. Addition of 5 vol% of different metal-compounds, in the form of HfC, VC, NbC or CrB2, increased the densification temperature to 1910 °C. The resulting compositionally complex ceramics had homogeneous microstructures with boride grains exhibiting core-shell features. The shell was a solid solution containing variable amounts of the three metals. Notably, TiB2 remained as a discrete phase in the reference material and in the presence of the V- and Cr- based additions, whilst it dissolved into the main ZrB2-based grains for …

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a leading cause of long-term disability. Following mTBI, secondary chemical cascades and neuroinflammation can result in myelin damage, significantly impairing cognitive function. This study aims to assess demyelination in mice with mTBI induced by open-field low-intensity blast (LIB) using a novel three-dimensional short repetition time adiabatic inversion recovery UTE (3D STAIR-UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence. Thirty male C57BL/6 mice, with 15 experiencing mTBI and 15 serving as sham controls, were included in this study. Behavioral tests were performed starting at 5 days post-injury to assess motor activity and anxiety-like responses followed by STAIR-UTE …

Ferroelectric elements of high-power electrical generators, utilizing the ability of ferroelectric materials to produce electric charge under mechanical stress, are subjected to either high-pressure shock or moderate-pressure impact loading. The results are reported herein on experimental investigations of a different mode for the generation of a high electric charge density, one that utilizes pre-compressed ferroelectric ceramics. Hard PZT 52/48 (Navy Type I/PZT-4) ferroelectric ceramic specimens were subjected to static uniaxial compressive stress parallel to polarization. At the moment of operation, the output terminals of the specimens were connected to an external circuit, and the applied stress was quickly removed, resulting …
