Macrophages are immune cells involved in wound healing and tissue regeneration; however, the sustained presence of proinflammatory macrophages in wound sites impairs healing. In this study, we shifted peritoneal macrophage polarization away from a proinflammatory (M1) phenotype through exposure to stabilized interleukin-4 (IL-4) in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) films in combination with topographical guidance from electro spun poly-l-lactic acid fibers. To our knowledge, this was the first study to stabilize IL-4 with bovine serum albumin (BSA) within a biomaterial. When IL-4 was coloaded with BSA for stabilization, we saw increased IL-4 bioactivity compared to no added stabilization, trehalose stabilization, or murine …

A series of ten GexGaySe1-x-y glasses within the topological constraint regime of = 2.3 to 2.8 were processed for physical property testing to compare measured to calculated property values enabling further understanding of structure-related mechanical property evolution. Average bond energies were calculated for each glass to elucidate structure and property relationships. Raman analysis was performed to correlate the topological constraint theory to experimentally determined structural units. Young's modulus and Vickers hardness, respectively, were shown to increase with increasing coordination number from 14.42 GPa and 911 MPa at = 2.4 to 29.44 GPa and 2295 MPa …

Strength Of Steel-To-Steel Screw Connections -- Update To Provisions, Thomas Stevens, Thomas Sputo, Jennifer Bridge
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The objective of this project is to review the existing provisions of the AISI S100-16 North American Specification for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, for screw connections loaded in shear and tension (but not combined actions). A recent study by the Steel Deck Institute (Sputo 2017) revealed possible unconservative results for screw pull-over, particularly in thinner sheets and/or lower ductility.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of available steel-to-steel screw connection strength test data, totaling 702 shear tests, 143 pull-over tests, and 335 pull-out tests. The tested strength of these connections was compared to the predicted strength from the existing …

As a Widely Used Segmentation Scheme, Markov Random Field (Mrf) Utilizes K-Means Clustering to Calculate the Initial Model for Sidescan Sonar Image Segmentation. However, for the Noise and Intensity Inhomogeneity Nature of the Sidescan Sonar Images, the Segmentation Results of K-Means Clustering Have Low Accuracy, Motivating Us to Use Machine Learning Methods to Initialize Mrf. Meanwhile, an Extreme Learning Machine (Elm), a Supervised Learning Algorithm Derived from the Single-Hidden-Layer Feedforward Neural Networks, Learns Faster Than Randomly Generated Hidden-Layer Parameters and is Superior to a Support Vector Machine (Svm). Therefore, in This Paper, We Proposed a Novel Method for Sidescan Sonar …

Deep Learning (DL) models have proven to be very effective in solving many challenging problems, especially, those related to computer vision, text, and speech. However, the design of such models is challenging because of the vast search space and computational complexity that needs to be explored. Our goal in this paper is to reduce the human effort required to design architectures by using a system architecture development process that allows the exploration of large design space by automating certain model construction, alternative generation, and assessment. The proposed framework is generic and targeted at all deep learning architectures that can be …

Corporate Social Responsibility: Understanding The Mining Stakeholder With A Case Study, Sisi Que, Liang Wang, Kwame Awuah-Offei, Wei Yang, Hui Jiang
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The social responsibility of corporate mining has been challenged by a significant socio-political risk from local communities. These issues reduce shareholder value by increasing costs and decreasing the market perception of corporate social responsibility. Community engagement is the process of understanding the behavior and interests of a group of targeted mining communities through surveys and data analysis, with the purpose of incorporating mining community acceptance into the mining sustainability. While mining organizations have discussed community engagement to varying degrees, there are three main shortcomings in current studies, as concluded in the authors' previous research. This paper presents a framework to …

Effective regeneration of bone defects caused by trauma or chronic diseases is a significant clinical challenge. Bone deficiency is overcome using treatments that rely on bone regeneration and augmentation. While various treatments have been investigated with encouraging results, complete and predictable bone reconstruction is often difficult [1]. Synthetic bone grafts have advantages such as consistent quality, safety, and good tissue tolerance. They usually function as inert or osteoconductive implants. Encouraging results from synthetic grafts have been reported. For instance, hollow hydroxyapatite (HA) microspheres showed the ability to facilitate bone repair in rats with non-healing calvarial defects [2,3]. However, new bone …

A Comparison Of Static And Dynamic Functional Connectivities For Identifying Subjects And Biological Sex Using Intrinsic Individual Brain Connectivity, Sreevalsan S. Menon, K. Krishnamurthy
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Functional magnetic resonance imaging has revealed correlated activities in brain regions even in the absence of a task. Initial studies assumed this resting-state functional connectivity (FC) to be stationary in nature, but recent studies have modeled these activities as a dynamic network. Dynamic spatiotemporal models better model the brain activities, but are computationally more involved. A comparison of static and dynamic FCs was made to quantitatively study their efficacies in identifying intrinsic individual connectivity patterns using data from the Human Connectome project. Results show that the intrinsic individual brain connectivity pattern can be used as a ‘fingerprint’ to distinguish among …

Manipulating Transverse Photovoltage Across Plasmonic Triangle Holes Of Symmetry Breaking, Marjan Akbari, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The transverse photo-induced voltages generated by the photon drag effect under normally and obliquely incident circularly polarized light across the plasmonic symmetry-breaking isosceles-triangle holes and right-triangle holes have been characterized. It is observed that the sign of transverse photovoltage flips when the incident circular polarization is switched for both types of plasmonic triangle holes. However, the unbalanced photovoltage between two circular polarizations is achieved across the plasmonic right-triangle holes, compared to the balanced photovoltage in the plasmonic isosceles-triangle holes. Such manipulation of the sign and the amplitude of transverse photovoltage is enabled by the broken symmetries of the electric and …

Concrete pumping is the most used technique to transfer concrete from the mixer truck to the formwork. Numerous studies have been performed on the flow behavior of concrete in pipes, as well as the consequences of pumping on fluid and hardened concrete properties. One of the negative consequences of pumping concrete is a decrease in freeze-thaw resistance. This is caused by a decrease in air content and an increase in air bubble size, due to dissolution and reappearance of air and air bubble coalescence under pressure. This paper investigates the capability of rheology to understand air dissolution and reappearance in …

In this letter, we develop a prism-based discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) algorithm with simplified periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) to analyze infinite doubly periodic frequency selective surfaces (FSS). Most FSS structures contain patterned planar conductive layers and supporting dielectric layers. These layers are very thin compared to the wavelength. Therefore, general tetrahedral discretization of space will unnecessarily increase the number of mesh elements, as well as the number of unknowns. Instead, we propose using prismatic elements, which are more optimal for planar structures, resulting in less unknowns, less memory usage, and higher efficiency. The accuracy of the proposed prism based DGTD …

Optical Transportation And Accumulation Of Microparticles By Self-Accelerating Cusp Beams, Weiwei Liu, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most of the self-accelerating beams have monotonous single-channel bending structures, which greatly limit their applications in many fields such as microscopic imaging and particle manipulation. In this paper, the self-accelerating cusp beams with variable numbers of multichannel bending structures are generated to demonstrate the optical transportation and accumulation of micrometer polystyrene particles. The transportation velocity and optical force profiles of the microparticles moving along the bending channels of cusp beams are analyzed. Parallel particle transportation and particle accumulation manipulation from all the bending channels are further demonstrated. These results will inspire a lot of promising applications for self-accelerating beams especially …

Solar energy is one of the most promising types of renewable energy. Flat facet solar concentrators were proposed to decrease the cost of materials needed for production. They used small flat mirrors for approximation of parabolic dish surface. The first prototype of flat facet solar concentrators was made in Australia in 1982. Later various prototypes of flat facet solar concentrators were proposed. It was shown that the cost of materials for these prototypes is much lower than the material cost of conventional parabolic dish solar concentrators. To obtain the overall low cost of flat facet concentrators it is necessary to …

Revisiting The Butler-Mokrys Model For The Vapor-Extraction Process, Vijitha Mohan, Partho Neogi, Baojun Bai
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The dynamics of a process in which a solvent in the form of a vapor or gas is introduced in a heavy-oil reservoir is considered. The process is called the solvent vapor-extraction process (VAPEX). When the vapor dissolves in the oil, it reduces its viscosity, allowing oil to flow under gravity and be collected at the bottom producer well. The conservation-of-species equation is analyzed to obtain a more-appropriate equation that differentiates between the velocity within the oil and the velocity at the interface, which can be solved to obtain a concentration profile of the solvent in oil. We diverge from …

Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Land subsidence as a result of groundwater overpumping in the San Joaquin Valley, California, is associated with the loss of groundwater storage and aquifer contamination. Although the physical processes governing land subsidence are well understood, building predictive models of subsidence is challenging because so much subsurface information is required to do so accurately. For the first time, we integrate airborne electromagnetic data, representing the subsurface, with subsidence data, mapped by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), to model deformation. By combining both data sets, we are able to solve for hydrologic and geophysical properties of the subsurface to effectively model the …

Determination of degrees of hydration/reaction of components of blended cementitious systems (i. e., cement and SCMs: supplementary cementitious materials) is essential to estimate the systems' properties. Although the best methods for determining degrees of reaction of different SCMs have been recommended by RILEM TC238, they rely on either expensive equipment (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance) or time-consuming sample preparation and data processing (e.g., backscattered electron image analysis). Furthermore, these methods cannot simultaneously characterize degree of hydration of cement and degree of reaction of SCMs. A novel decoupling method, which can simultaneously estimate the degree of hydration of cement and the degree …

In Most Domain Adaption Approaches, All Features Are Used for Domain Adaption. However, Often, Not Every Feature is Beneficial for Domain Adaption. in Such Cases, Incorrectly Involving All Features Might Cause the Performance to Degrade. in Other Words, to Make the Model Trained on the Source Domain Work Well on the Target Domain, it is Desirable to Find Invariant Features for Domain Adaption Rather Than using All Features. However, Invariant Features Across Domains May Lie in a Higher Order Space, instead of in the Original Feature Space. Moreover, the Discriminative Ability of Some Invariant Features Such as Shared Background Information …
A Comprehensive Experimental And Modeling Study On Dissolution In Li-Ion Batteries, Yoon Koo Lee, Jonghyun Park, Wei Lu
A Comprehensive Experimental And Modeling Study On Dissolution In Li-Ion Batteries, Yoon Koo Lee, Jonghyun Park, Wei Lu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Dissolution is a critical challenge in metal oxide battery materials, which affects battery performance across multiple scales. At the particle level, the loss of active material as a result of dissolution directly results in capacity fade. At the electrode level, the re-deposition of dissolved metal ions onto the cathode increases cell polarization and hinders lithium transport. At the cell level, the dissolved ions further transport to and deposit on the anode, which consumes cycle-able lithium and leads to capacity fade. These processes lead to poor lithium reversibility, diffusivity, and conductivity. In this work, detailed experimental studies from the particle level …

Battery-Free Wireless Strain Measurement Using An Antenna Sensor, Yang Wang
Battery-Free Wireless Strain Measurement Using An Antenna Sensor, Yang Wang
INSPIRE Archived Webinars
A battery-free antenna sensor can wirelessly measure strain on a structure. Bonded to the surface of a base structure, the antenna sensor deforms when the structure is under strain, causing the antenna’s electromagnetic resonance frequency to change. This resonance frequency change can be wirelessly interrogated and recorded by a reader through electromagnetic backscattering. A radio frequency identification (RFID) chip on the sensor harnesses a small amount of energy from the interrogation signal and responds to the reader. The resonance frequency change identified by the reader is then used to determine the strain applied on the structure. The latest antenna sensor …

Composites combining superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and polymers are largely present in modern (bio)materials. However, although SPIONs embedded in polymer matrices are classically reported, the mechanical and degradation properties of the polymer scaffold are impacted by the SPIONs. Therefore, the controlled anchoring of SPIONs onto polymer surfaces is still a major challenge. Herein, we propose an efficient strategy for the direct and uniform anchoring of SPIONs on the surface of functionalized-polylactide (PLA) nanofibers via a simple free ligand exchange procedure to design PLA@SPIONs core@shell nanocomposites. The resulting PLA@SPIONs hybrid biomaterials are characterized by electron microscopy (scanning electron microscopy and …

Seismicity Enhances Macrodispersion In Finite Porous And Fractured Domains: A Pore-Scale Perspective, Lizhi Zheng, Lichun Wang, Wen Deng
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Understanding the effects of oscillating flow field induced by seismicity on the transport process is vital for predicting the fate and transport of solute in many dynamic environments. However, there is prominent discrepancy in arguing with the response of dispersion to the oscillating flow field (i.e., the longitudinal dispersion coefficient would decrease, increase, or maintain unchanged). To unravel the underpinning physics about this controversial response, we simulated two-hundred twenty pore-scale numerical experiments for the seismicity-induced oscillating flow field and associated solute transport in the idealized finite porous (i.e., fluidic plate) and fractured (i.e., parallel plates) domains. The numerically obtained breakthrough …

A new hybrid composite beam (HCB) has recently been used in the construction of three bridges in Missouri, USA. HCB consists of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) that is poured into classical arch shape and tied at the ends by steel tendons. Both the concrete and the steel are tucked inside a durable fiberglass shell, and the voids are filled with polyiso foam. This paper aims to examine the flexural behavior of an in-service HCB, evaluate the current methodology and assumptions, and propose modifications to that methodology. To achieve these goals, the strains induced in HCB elements due to different loading stages …

Ground motions at sites close to a fault are sometimes affected by forward directivity, where the rupture energy arrives at the site in a form of a very short duration pulse. These pulses impose a heavy demand on structures located in the vicinity of the fault. In this research, a probabilistic seismic demand analysis (PSDA) for a self-centering bridge is carried out. The bridge columns consisted of unbonded, post-tensioned, concrete-filled, fiber-reinforced polymer tubes. A bridge model was developed and non-linear time history analyses were performed. Three different methodologies that used spectral accelerations to predict structural responses were used, and a …

The antenna consists of a back plane (reflector), a slot-loop antenna (driven element), and a director of rod. Based on the current distribution, the slot-loop antenna is equivalent to an array of three linear current dipoles. The dipole acts as an element of the director, which provides a highly efficient director for slot-loop antenna according to theoretical analysis. Both the impedance bandwidth and the 1 dB gain bandwidth are 45% covering 1.7-2.7 GHz in this design. A gain of 11.2 to 12.2 dBi is obtained …
