This article investigates using imbalanced two- and three-wire terminations for ac main cables, as suggested by the standard group. These terminations provide the basis for a new line impedance stabilization network (LISN) whose objective is to improve test repeatability between labs while also providing better estimation of real-world emissions. Standard balanced LISNs do not reproduce the imbalanced terminations seen in practice. An imbalanced two- or three-wire very high-frequency LISN was built, which can handle up to 15 A on each line. The LISN operates from 30 to 200 MHz and provides greater than 50-dB isolation between the input and output. …

A Compact High-Isolation Wideband Three-Sector Linear Array, Sheng Wu, Lidong Chi, Fuhai Li, Francesco De Paulis, Yihong Qi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A compact and highly isolated three-sector linear array is proposed targeting point-to-point or point-to-multipoint data communication in Central Business District (CBD) and residential subdivision applications. It features wide bandwidth, high isolation among the units, low wind load, and low manufacturing and installation costs within the 400-500 MHz band. The driving element of the array unit is a wideband high-efficiency electromagnetic structure (WHEMS) applied in combination with the metal rods as passive elements for isolation purposes. The parasitic rod, shared by the adjacent units, decouples the mutual coupling by reducing the distance, which realizes not only the high isolation capability but …

Neurocognitive consequences of blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) pose significant concerns for military service members and veterans with the majority of "invisible injury." However, the underlying mechanism of such mild bTBI by low-intensity blast (LIB) exposure for long-term cognitive and mental deficits remains elusive. Our previous studies have shown that mice exposed to LIB result in nanoscale ultrastructural abnormalities in the absence of gross or apparent cellular damage in the brain. Here we tested the hypothesis that glutamatergic hyperexcitability may contribute to long-term learning deficits. Using brain slice electrophysiological recordings, we found an increase in averaged frequencies with a burst …

This study aims at the development of magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high performance concrete (MPC-UHPC). To this end, MPC paste phase was designed by using high magnesia-to-phosphate (M/P, 3.5) and low water-to-cement (W/C, 0.10–0.16) mass ratios, and certain amounts of ultra-fine fly ash (UFA, 5%–15%). Fresh and hardened properties, and microstructure of the developed MPC-UHPC were evaluated, and compared with those of conventional UHPC as well. Test results showed that lower W/C resulted in higher mechanical strengths and lower drying shrinkage, but the sharp decrease of workability and increase of autogenous shrinkage. At a constant W/C, the addition of UFA effectively …

Several million cubic meters of concrete are pumped daily, as this technique permits fast concrete placement. Fundamental research has been performed and practical guidelines have been developed to increase the knowledge of concrete behavior in pipes. However, the pumping process and concrete behavior are not fully understood. This paper gives an overview of the current knowledge of concrete pumping. At first, the known physics governing the flow of concrete in pipes are introduced. A series of experimental techniques characterizing concrete flow behavior near a smooth wall to predict pressure-flow rate relationships are discussed, followed by recent developments in the use …

This paper studied the influence of carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphite nanoplatelet (GNP) used at 0 to 0.3%, by mass of binder, on composition, structure, and nano-mechanical characteristics of C-S-H of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Hydration kinetics, pore structure, and mechanical properties of UHPC were also investigated. The non-proprietary UHPC was proportioned with 17% lightweight sand for internal curing. Test results indicated that the addition of 0.3% CNT or GNP led to approximately 20 MPa increase in compressive strengths of non-fibrous UHPC mortar and fibrous UHPC (2% steel fibers), compared to those prepared without any nanomaterial. Such enhancement is attributed …

This article presents a novel method to design multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antennas based on characteristic mode analysis (CMA), which is different from using individual excitation of each characteristic mode for high isolation. The CMA is performed to design a pair of symmetric slots on two connected dipole antennas (a MIMO dipole pair), so that two desired characteristic modes can be generated at the same frequency, one of which is in common mode and the other in differential mode. Hence, when one antenna element is excited, the two characteristic modes combine and cancel each other at the other antenna element, leading to …

Organic additives are required for alkaline zincate plating baths to obtain an acceptable coating on steel for corrosion protection. The effects and possible interactions of three commercial additives (Eldiem Carrier, Eldiem Booster, and Bright Enhancer 2x on zinc electrodeposition from a high-concentration alkaline zincate bath were investigated. Visually acceptable deposits were produced within the current density range of 130 to 430 A m−2 for most additive conditions examined. Over concentration ranges examined, decreasing the booster concentration led to brighter zinc deposits, and an interaction between the carrier and the booster was detected. The additives fostered the formation of compact and …

Evolution Of High-Frequency Instabilities In The Presence Of Azimuthally Compact Crossflow Vortex Pattern Over A Yawed Cone, Meelan Choudhari, Fei Li, Pedro Paredes, Lian Duan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hypersonic boundary-layer flows over a circular cone at a moderate yaw angle can support strong crossflow instability away from the windward and leeward rays on the plane of symmetry. Due to the more efficient excitation of stationary crossflow vortices by surface roughness, a possible path to transition in such flows corresponds to rapid amplification of the high-frequency instabilities sustained in the presence of finite amplitude stationary crossflow vortices. This paper presents a computational analysis of crossflow instability over a 7-degree half-angle, yawed circular cone in a Mach 6 free stream. Specifically, the nonlinear evolution of an azimuthally localized crossflow vortex …

Local thermal history can significantly vary in parts during metal Additive Manufacturing (AM), leading to local defects. However, the sequential layer-by-layer nature of AM facilitates in-situ part voxelmetric observations that can be used to detect and correct these defects for part qualification and quality control. The challenge is to relate this local radiometric data with local defect information to estimate process error likelihood in future builds. This paper uses a Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) camera to record the temperature history for parts manufactured with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) processes. The porosity from a cylindrical specimen is measured by ex-situ micro-computed …

Evaluating The Low-Temperature Properties Of Asphalt Binders Extracted From Mixtures Containing Recycled Materials, Eslam Deef-Allah, Magdy Abdelrahman
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The use of recycled materials − such as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) − in asphalt mixtures reduces natural resources demands and decreases materials dumped in landfills. The aged binders included in the recycled materials alter binders' low-temperature properties included in asphalt mixtures. Therefore, asphalt binders were extracted from asphalt mixtures collected from the field as cores. Due to the limited amount of extracted asphalt binders (EABs), a dynamic shear rheometer was used to examine the low-temperature properties [e.g., true temperature (Tt), continuous temperature (Tc), and delta continuous temperature (ΔTc)]. Using recycled materials in asphalt mixtures …

Current drones perform a wide variety of tasks in surveillance, photography, agriculture, package delivery, etc. However, these tasks are performed passively without the use of human interaction. Aerial manipulation shifts this paradigm and implements drones with robotic arms that allow interaction with the environment rather than simply sensing it. Many research groups have demonstrated aerial manipulation for various applications for over a decade. For example, in construction, aerial manipulation in conjunction with human interaction could allow operators to perform several tasks, such as hosing decks, drill into surfaces, and sealing cracks via a drone. This integration with drones will henceforth …

To explore the dynamic mechanism of continental rifting within a convergent setting, we determine the first P wave radial anisotropic tomography beneath the Woodlark rift in southeastern Papua New Guinea, which develops within the obliquely colliding zone between the Australian and southwest Pacific plates. The rift zone is depicted as localized low-velocity anomalies with positive radial anisotropy, which rules out a dominant role of active mantle upwelling in promoting the rift development and favors passive rifting with decompression melting as main processes. Downwelling slab relics in the upper mantle bounding the rift zone are revealed based on observed high-velocity anomalies …

Crack is the external expression form of potential safety risks in bridge construction. Currently, automatic detection and segmentation of bridge cracks remains the top priority of civil engineers. With the development of image segmentation techniques based on convolutional neural networks, new opportunities emerge in bridge crack detection. Traditional bridge crack detection methods are vulnerable to complex background and small cracks, which is difficult to achieve effective segmentation. This study presents a bridge crack segmentation method based on a densely connected U-Net network (BC-DUnet) with a background elimination module and cross-attention mechanism. First, a dense connected feature extraction model (DCFEM) integrating …

A scalar intensity measure (IM) could be insufficient to represent the earthquake intensity and variety in fragility estimation. Introducing multiple IMs to conventional regression of fragility functions can be computationally demanding and require priori assumptions of functional forms. In this study, multivariate seismic classifiers with multiple IMs as inputs are developed based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to address the above disadvantages of traditional regression approaches. Case studies of a four-story code-conforming benchmark building indicate that fragility estimates from multi-IM ANN classifiers lead to higher accuracy (5.0% to 7.7%) in system-level and element-level damage classification than the single-IM traditional fragility …

Multi-element layered materials have gained substantial attention in the context of achieving the customized light-matter interactions at subwavelength scale via stoichiometric engineering, which is crucial for the realization of miniaturized polarization-sensitive optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. Herein, naturally occurring hydrated sodium sulfosalt gerstleyite is introduced as one new multi-element van der Waals (vdW) layered material. The mechanically exfoliated thin gerstleyite flakes are demonstrated to exhibit polarization-sensitive anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical responses including angle-resolved Raman scattering, anomalous wavelength-dependent linear dichroism transition, birefringence effect, and polarization-dependent third-harmonic generation (THG). Furthermore, the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of gerstleyite crystal is estimated by the probed …

In this paper, we articulate the challenge of multiple intersecting policies for the realization of rural broadband networks employing dynamic spectrum access (DSA). Broadband connectivity has been identified as a critical component of economic development, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and rural communities have been significantly (and negatively) affected by the lack of this important resource. Although technologies exist that can deliver broadband connectivity, such as 4G LTE and 5G cellular networks, the challenges associated with efficiently deploying this infrastructure within a rural environment are multi-dimensional in terms of the different dependent policy decisions that need to be considered. The increase in single-fiber pullout strength usually improves tensile strength and toughness of UHPC. An increase in fiber orientation angle (θ) up to 45° to the direction of pullout load was found to enhance the single-fiber pullout strength. However, such increase in predominant θ value along tensile strength specimens led to a reduction in tensile strength of UHPC. In order to elucidate this controversial observation, analytical models combined with experiments were carried out to assess the key factors influencing the tensile properties of UHPC due to variations of fiber orientation. The test parameters involved the evaluation of the effect of …

Tornadoes result in death and property loss in communities around the world. To quantify the actions of tornadoes on civil structures, researchers have built physical laboratory tornado simulators to simulate tornadoes in the lab environment and tested building models in the simulated tornadic wind field, which is similar to wind tunnel testing when quantifying the wind effects induced by straight-line winds. Unfortunately, physical tornado simulators are much less common than straight-line wind tunnels, leading to the lack of research on bluff-body aerodynamics on civil structures under tornadic winds. Considering that it is expensive to conduct experimental testing in physical tornado …
