Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke Jan 1930

Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether the more important iron ores of Missouri would be amenable to beneficiation to produce high grade concentrates. In the southeastern section of Missouri are found many small deposits of high grade iron ores, and a few large deposits of comparatively low grade ore. The former consist chiefly of red and brown hematite and limonite ores that are in no need of beneficiation. the low grade iron orebodies are relatively large in extent, and, if they could be beneficiated successully [sic] and economically would be of value. Accordingly, the major portion of …

Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes Jan 1930

Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes

Masters Theses

"The application of the flotation process has become one of the greatest innovations in modern ore dressing. In a comparatively short span of years it has grown to be one of the most powerful tools of the ore dressing engineer. Flotation is particularly adapted for the recovery of finely ground mineral and has thus enabled the miner to open up enormous deposits of low grade, disseminated ores for profitable treatment. In conjunction with other methods, the process has raised the recovery in practically every ore dressing plant by the treatment of slimes which otherwise would go to waste, carrying valuable …

A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman Jan 1930

A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman

Masters Theses

"Ball milling practice in the ore dressing industry is largely empirical. Although many investigators have worked on various of its phases, the present operating methods are mostly a matter of cut-and-try, with the result that the industry is not guided by its underlying principles. Consequently, practice varies extensively with regard to nearly all conditions of operations. Even in neighboring concentrators such factors as speed, ball charge, and ore load differ in similar ball mills. Since fine grinding is continually becoming of more importance, and often accounts for thirty per cent of the milling cost, it is very necessary that a …

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter Jan 1930

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter

Masters Theses

"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of vegetables, water, and soils has a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A few countries, notably New Zealand and Switzerland have made a rather complete survey. In the United States, South Carolina has made the most progress in this direction.

At the present time there are no available records of vegetable and soil analysis for iodine in Missouri. Hunze determined the amount of iodine in waters in Missouri. The connection of his results with the author's results will be seen later.

The present investigation was carried out at …

The Manufacture Of Cement In The State Of California, William Alonzo Mccanless Jan 1929

The Manufacture Of Cement In The State Of California, William Alonzo Mccanless

Professional Degree Theses

"In studying the subject of cementitious materials, from a structural standpoint, we find as we retrace our progress, that concrete as evolved, has always had the commanding position of superiority as a structural material, it now enjoys in all stages of man's civilization"--page 1.

The Manufacture Of Airtight Leather Gaskets, W. Kedzie Teller Jan 1929

The Manufacture Of Airtight Leather Gaskets, W. Kedzie Teller

Professional Degree Theses

"Wherever gaskets are used in conjunction with any type of mechanism operated by compressed air, of course, it is essential that the gaskets be air tight. Whereas it is possible to use rubberized fabric for this purpose with a degree of satisfaction, treated leather has certain advantages which make its use preferable. Leather is readily available and can be cut and molded into various shapes with less difficulty than is encountered in fabricating similar designs from reinforced rubber. Then, too, leather withstands wear much better than rubberized fabric. The problem then arises to treat leather to make it airtight, for …

"During recent years, Kansas has produced over 90% of the volcanic ash produced in the United States. Other important areas of volcanic ash are to be found in California, Montana and Idaho. Extensive development of the latter named deposits awaits more advantageous markets than are now present"--Origin of Volcanic Ash, page 2-3.

Electrolytic Board For The Determination Of Lead, And Some Comments On The Procedure For Lead In Low-Grade Tailings Of The Southeast Missouri Lead District, O. W. Holmes Jan 1929

Electrolytic Board For The Determination Of Lead, And Some Comments On The Procedure For Lead In Low-Grade Tailings Of The Southeast Missouri Lead District, O. W. Holmes

Professional Degree Theses

"Recent improvements in the practice of milling lead ores of the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District has resulted in the production of low-grade mill tailings. The tenor of the lead in the tailings is often between 0.05 and 0.25 per cent. In view of the fact that large tonnages are handled daily and that further improvements are under way, it is imperative that the lead content of these tailings be accurately determined.

For this purpose an electrolytic board, which speeds up the electrolytic determination of lead in low-grade mill tailings, has been devised at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of …

The Coarse Crushing Plant Of The Desloge Consolidated Lead Company, Horace Reynolds Stahl, Robert Gibson O'Meara Jan 1929

The Coarse Crushing Plant Of The Desloge Consolidated Lead Company, Horace Reynolds Stahl, Robert Gibson O'Meara

Professional Degree Theses

"The Desloge consolidated Lead Company is located at Desloge, Missouri, in the disseminated lead district of St. Francois County. The crushing plant was built during 1925 to replace crushing installations at three mines. The plant was designed to deliver 2,000 tons of 7 to 9 mm. feed per day to the concentrating plant. Operating conditions have since improved so that the present tonnage is about 2,200 toms of 6.5 mm. feed per day, operating 16 hours. The essential mineral is galena, more or less finely disseminated in a dolomitic gangue. The ore is comparatively soft and easily crushed"--Introduction, page 1.

Florida Kaolin As The Chief Clay Ingredient For A Sanitary Ware Casting Body, Hugo Logan Harrod Jan 1929

Florida Kaolin As The Chief Clay Ingredient For A Sanitary Ware Casting Body, Hugo Logan Harrod

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to utilize a large percentage of Florida Plastic Kaolin in a new sanitary ware casting body. Such a body, when worked out to be satisfactory, could be produced at a lower cost than those bodies being used in American plants at present. This particular plastic kaolin is available in large quantities in the southeastern portion of the United States. It is the intention of this work to substitute this American clay for the more costly imported English China Clay now being used in sanitary ware casting bodies"--Introduction, Purpose of the Investigation, page 1.

A Study Of Chrome And Diaspore Mixes, Harlow Guy Jones Jan 1929

A Study Of Chrome And Diaspore Mixes, Harlow Guy Jones

Bachelors Theses

"The high refractoriness of both chrome and diaspore make them very valuable to the refractory industry. Chrome ore has been experimented with since 1879 and used in brick form since 1886. Diaspore on the other hand, has just recently been recognized as a refractory After going through all the available literature on the subject I have been unable to find any mention of any work carried on in which mixtures of chrome and diaspore were used"--page 1.

Beneficiation Of Manganese Ores, Michael V. Healey Jan 1929

Beneficiation Of Manganese Ores, Michael V. Healey

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to study the means of beneficiating domestic manganese ores in order that a marketable product may be made. Within the limits of the paper the term "Manganese ores" is applied to those ores mined primarily for their manganese content, to the exclusion of manganiferous iron and silver ores"--Object, page 1.

The Change In The Order Of Catalytic Action Of Lithium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, And Calcium Chloride In The Ketonic Splitting Of Ethyl Acetoacetate, Richard Dwight Duff Jan 1929

The Change In The Order Of Catalytic Action Of Lithium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, And Calcium Chloride In The Ketonic Splitting Of Ethyl Acetoacetate, Richard Dwight Duff

Masters Theses

"The catalytic action of neutral salts on many reactions has been investigated under various conditions, and a large number of explanations have been put forward. In this work the catalytic action of normal solutions of lithium chloride, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride in the presence of .1 N. hydrochloric acid on the ketonic splitting of ethyl acetoacetate has been investigated at several temperatures between 80⁰C. and 95⁰C. An attempt has been made to explain the results obtained"--Introduction, page 1.

A Study Of The Determination Of Fluorine And Other Constituents In Fluorspar, Robert Knowlton Grantham Jan 1929

A Study Of The Determination Of Fluorine And Other Constituents In Fluorspar, Robert Knowlton Grantham

Masters Theses

"A method for the determination of certain constituents in fluorspar has been studied. Fluorspar can be complete decomposed by fuming with perchloric acid. Agitation and boiling is essential to a rapid and quantitative decomposition. Lead, ferric oxide, titanium oxide, aluminum oxide and total calcium have been quantitatively determined in the solution obtained by the perchloric acid method of decomposition. Silica cannot be determined quantitatively by the use of perchloric acid alone. Preferential solution of calcium carbonate by means of very dilute perchloric acid cannot be used as a method for determining calcium in carbonates in the presence of calcium fluoride"--Summary, …

A Few Notes From The Sanitary Engineering Field, Ronald Davies Ward Jan 1928

A Few Notes From The Sanitary Engineering Field, Ronald Davies Ward

Professional Degree Theses

"This paper, it is felt, may appear to be a somewhat disconnected discussion of a few points that have come to the writer's attention from his limited experience and practice in the field of Sanitary Engineering. It has not been the intention, however, to provide a discussion of continuity which would take the reader from the ground up through the process involved in the design and construction of any particular structure, system, or plant; but rather is it to be considered the writer's attempt - although probably a somewhat feeble one - to set forth in a note-book, as it …

An Investigation Of The Mechanics Of Oil Migration From The Source Beds To The Reservoir Beds, William Reed Quilliam Jan 1928

An Investigation Of The Mechanics Of Oil Migration From The Source Beds To The Reservoir Beds, William Reed Quilliam

Professional Degree Theses

"The study of the migration and accumulation of petroleum has very naturally been analytic, with the result that we have had a variety of studies of its several features. the generation of petroleum, its migration and its accumulation in reservoir rocks is not a rapid process which may be accomplished and terminated in a comparatively short time, but one of long and almost continuous operation from the time of its inception. In this study the author is not attempting to formulate a new theory for the movement of oil from its point of origin to its final point of accumulation …

Internal Combustion Engines, Neal Ham Jan 1928

Internal Combustion Engines, Neal Ham

Professional Degree Theses

"Every one is either directly or indirectly concerned with two types of power plants. The steam power plants of Kansas City furnish us with light, power, and transportation. In this day these are indispensable. The gas, or internal combustion engine power plant furnishes transportation, mainly and some power. Each of our big buses has an internal combustion engine power plant under the hood.

It will be our aim here to show how the internal combustion engines operates and discuss some of the types in use in automobiles and stationary power plants. When one contemplates the immense amount of power developed …

Diversion Of Mississippi Flood Water As Aid To Flood Control, R. W. Campbell Jan 1928

Diversion Of Mississippi Flood Water As Aid To Flood Control, R. W. Campbell

Professional Degree Theses

"For many years the lower Mississippi River valley has been in constant danger from high water causing disastrous floods. The important city of New Orleans, our typical French city, is below the surface of the Mississippi River at all stages, and its only means of protection at present is by a levee. Should this bulkwark give way, the whole of that city would be submerged. With this danger in mind, the writer has undertaken a study for, and design of a spillway above the city to reduce the danger caused by high water. Each year flood heights increase and the …

Cone Deformation Eutectics Using Sodium Chloride, Dolomite, And Alpite Rock, William K. Schweickhardt Jan 1928

Cone Deformation Eutectics Using Sodium Chloride, Dolomite, And Alpite Rock, William K. Schweickhardt

Bachelors Theses

"Heterogeneous Equilibrium, alone, is an extensive study in itself and no discussion of it will be given here. It is known from this study that different phases are formed in various systems, the system consisting of two or more components. Some systems form an eutectic, which is a mixture of two solids which combine to form a liquid at a lower degree of temperature than either of the milting points of the two solids, as shown in the two component system of KCl and LiCl¹; some systems form solid solutions in which there is no eutectic formed, and the solids …

Drainage And Irrigation Of A Thirty-Six Square Mile Tract Of Land In Louisiana, Ralph Charles Dodge Jan 1928

Drainage And Irrigation Of A Thirty-Six Square Mile Tract Of Land In Louisiana, Ralph Charles Dodge

Bachelors Theses

"Because of the fact that I was unable to secure all of the necessary data concerning the topography of the section in question I made several assumptions. However, these assumptions were not made at random, as the land lies on the coast and is subject to the same conditions as does the southern portion of Jefferson County, Texas, of which I have accurate knowledge and which lies directly across Sabine Pass"--Introduction, page iv.

Irregularities In The Productivity Of The Fry Sand In The Smith-Ellis Pool Of Northwest Brown County, Texas, Willard Ardell Schaeffer Jr. Jan 1928

Irregularities In The Productivity Of The Fry Sand In The Smith-Ellis Pool Of Northwest Brown County, Texas, Willard Ardell Schaeffer Jr.

Professional Degree Theses

"The Fry Sand of Northwest Brown County, Texas, as ordinarily defined, consists of irregularly distributed lenticular sand bodies of varying thickness, ranging up to more than thirty feet in some localities. It is quite generally conceded to be a member of the upper Strawn Group of the Pennsylvanian of Texas.

The Fry Sand is highly unconformable with relation to the strata both above and below, and is subject to abrupt changes of thickness within distances of but a few yards. It generally occurs as a light grey to white, fairly fine-grained, quite pure quartz sand, and where it is present …

Difference In Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Between Raw And Calcined Clay, Charles Alfred Freeman Jan 1928

Difference In Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Between Raw And Calcined Clay, Charles Alfred Freeman

Bachelors Theses

"In a recent survey of the refractories field with particular respect to the Pyrometric Cone Equivalent of different clays it was suggested that a difference in the P. C. E. value of clays might be found due to different stages of heat treatment that these clays had previously undergone. At present there is considerable apparent lack of information regarding this problem. It is evidenced largely in the samples of clay sent into commercial testing and research laboratories by manufacturers who are attempting to develop definite properties from a given clay or clay body. There is a large difference in the …

A Study Of Petroleum Emulsions, Howard Halcomb Gross Jan 1928

A Study Of Petroleum Emulsions, Howard Halcomb Gross

Masters Theses

"The producer of crude oil experiences a continuous source of trouble and loss in the emulsion problem. These emulsions cannot be entirely discarded for several reasons: First because it is a waste of natural resource and second because there are such large quantities that no feasible outlet could be found on account of fire hazard and stream polution [sic]. Further to keep these emulsions in storage for slow settling puts a storage burden on the producers. To handle the emulsions most economically many producers are treating them and a large number of methods for treating have been devised. The object …

The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Ether, Clarence Bernard Weiss Jan 1928

The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Ether, Clarence Bernard Weiss

Masters Theses

"The data on the solubility of inorganic salts in ether is scarce. Eder made a study of this subject and found few salts whose solubility could be called high. He used both hydrated and dehydrated salts. Neumann mentions the great solubility of aluminum chloride in ether, but did no work to find its exact proportions. It was thought that perhaps with this particular salt, a solubility curve might be obtained that would be both instructive and interesting. Therefore the major portion of this work was spent in determining the solubility of aluminum chloride in ether. Other salts whose solubilities were …

Solubility Of Solid Paraffins In Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Ruth Veino Goodhue Jan 1928

Solubility Of Solid Paraffins In Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Ruth Veino Goodhue

Masters Theses

"The solubility of solid paraffins in the lower molecular weight liquid hydrocarbons offers a problem of some considerable commercial importance since it is by use of these low boiling hydrocarbons that the undesirable paraffin waxes are removed from lubricating oils in the Sharples process. Little data is to be found in the literature on the solubility of the paraffin waxes, and that which is available is of a very general nature...This work was undertaken for the purpose of finding if possible, what effect this "cracking" or "telescoping" process has on the solubility of the paraffins in the liquid hydrocarbons"--Introduction, page …

A Study Of The Determination Of Silica In The Presence Of Fluorine, William Harlan Ode Jan 1928

A Study Of The Determination Of Silica In The Presence Of Fluorine, William Harlan Ode

Masters Theses

"The determination of silica in the presence of fluorine has always been accomplished either by difficult and complex analytical procedures or by rapid arbitrary control methods of doubtful precision...Hence, this study was undertaken in order to determine whether a more simple method might be found for the determination of silica in the presence of fluorine"--Introduction, page 1-2.

The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Carbon Disulfide: The Case Of Aluminum Bromide, Herman Henry Kaveler Jan 1928

The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Carbon Disulfide: The Case Of Aluminum Bromide, Herman Henry Kaveler

Masters Theses

"Since about 1890, the interest in solubility has turned to a large extent to the investigation of the solubility of compounds in organic solvents. This has resulted in a great deal of work being done on the solubility of inorganic salts in non-aqueous solvents. As this mass of data steadily accumulated, the theoretical considerations of solubility and the ideal solution made rapid advances, as Hildebrand has pointed out. We express as much wonder over these theoretical advances as chemists did over the discover "that salts do dissolve in organic compounds". To add some useful data to that already accumulated on …

The Manufacture Of Liquid Oxygen And Its Use As An Explosive, Francis Kinlock Middleton Hunter Jan 1927

The Manufacture Of Liquid Oxygen And Its Use As An Explosive, Francis Kinlock Middleton Hunter

Professional Degree Theses

"Oxygen was first liquefied in 1877, but the first record of its use commercially as an explosive was in 1899 when part of the famous Simplon tunnel between Italy and Switzerland was driven with this explosive. Owing to the difficulties of storing and using this liquid, little more progress was made until the Great War, when Germany, forced to experiment with any promising explosive because of her rapidly diminishing stocks of Chilean nitrates, made considerable headway in the technique of using liquid oxygen...Since the War liquid oxygen explosives have been used extensively in France and Germany and to a lesser …

On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers Jan 1927

On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers

Professional Degree Theses

"After making a survey of the available information on the subject of permanent growth in grey iron castings, it was found that very little definite information is available and such as is available does not seem to satisfy all conditions. As is perhaps generally known, grey iron castings withstand a growth in volume upon repeated heating and cooling, which growth is a permanent deformation and is not a function of the temperature co-efficient"--Review of Published Work, page 3.
