A Study Of Size Of Diamonds In Diamond Drilling, Robert J. M. Miller Jan 1952

A Study Of Size Of Diamonds In Diamond Drilling, Robert J. M. Miller

Masters Theses

" ''A Study of Size of Diamonds in Diamond Drilling' is the research problem which will be discussed in this treatise.

The author's interest in the effect of size of diamonds was created by Mr. R. D. Longyear of the E. J. Longyear Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Longyear, when asked for suggestions for a research problem concerning diamond drilling suggested, among other things, that there was a need for further work on the factor of size of stones. After extensive reading and reviewing, the author learned that many investigators had recognized changes in results attributable to changes in size …

An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman Jan 1952

An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman

Masters Theses

"The demand for topographic maps from hunters, fishermen, vacationers, professional engineers etc, has been increasing with each passing year. In 1940 people bought some 700,000 copies of topographic maps. In 1946 sales had jumped to well over 2,000,000 copies. Civilian use of these maps by veterans has contributed substantially to the tremendous expansion of demand for maps since World War II. In recent years, the quality of topographic maps has been greatly improved by refinements in methods and by the use of aerial photography in map compilation. This advancement, and an ever-increasing demand from engineers, geologists, and many others for …

Autographic Determination Of Thermally-Induced Linear Changes In Ceramic Bodies, William Dean Mckee Jr. Jan 1952

Autographic Determination Of Thermally-Induced Linear Changes In Ceramic Bodies, William Dean Mckee Jr.

Masters Theses

"The determination of changes in length of ceramic compositions as a function of temperature is frequently required in ceramic research and testing. With the use of an observer, excellent means are available for determination of changes in length over moderate ranges of temperature. However, the extended period required for some tests makes desirable the automatic recording of length change as a function of temperature.

There has been in use in the Ceramic Engineering Department a furnace arranged for determination of length changes; this furnace, shown in Figure 1, is so arranged that change in sample length causes linear displacement of …

An Economic Study Of The "C" Factor, David Hunter Robinson Jan 1952

An Economic Study Of The "C" Factor, David Hunter Robinson

The relationship between the runoff of large …

An Investigation Of End-Anchorage And Performance Of Sr-4 Strain Gages On A Prestressed Concrete Beam, Howard W. Nunez Jr. Jan 1952

An Investigation Of End-Anchorage And Performance Of Sr-4 Strain Gages On A Prestressed Concrete Beam, Howard W. Nunez Jr.

Masters Theses

"In recent years there has been brought to the attention of engineers and architects a new medium of construction---prestressed concrete. Reinforced concrete has long been recognized as a satisfactory material for use in the construction of buildings, bridges, highways, tanks and other structures. However, most concrete designers will concede that this material has many drawbacks. For instance, in a simple beam of rectangular cross-section, roughly only one half or the concrete is relied on to resist compressive forces. The tensile strength of the concrete is considered to be zero, and steel bars or rods must be inserted to carry the …

The Effect Of Grain Size On Shearing Strength Of Sand, Keyhan Samimi Jan 1952

The Effect Of Grain Size On Shearing Strength Of Sand, Keyhan Samimi

Masters Theses

"The object of this study is to determine experimentally the effect of definite grain size on the shearing characteristics of sandy soils. As it will be discussed in detail under the article - The Mechanics of Shear, the shearing characteristics of sandy soils depends on many factors such as grain size and shape, soil structure and relative density, the water content of soil. An attempt is made throughout the entire investigation to determine the effect of definite grain size on the shearing value and the angle of internal friction under the dry and saturated conditions. Furthermore, the results of shear …

A Comparison Of The Real Price And Market Price Of Some Common Metals, Kon-Hock Khaw Jan 1952

A Comparison Of The Real Price And Market Price Of Some Common Metals, Kon-Hock Khaw

Masters Theses

"A number of complex factors influence the fluctuation of the price of a metal. In this investigation, the writer is concerned with the influence of the purchasing power of the dollar and, therefore the difference between the value (real price) and market price of nine metals. That is, this is a study of metal prices and their corresponding values. No attempt is made to analyze the supply and demand of the past or the future, except as they are expressed by their function -- price.

To aid in the comparison, a set of index numbers for metals is compiled and …

A Study Of The Dissolution Of Titanium In Acids With Ammonium Fluoride Added, Charles Burroughs Gill Jan 1952

A Study Of The Dissolution Of Titanium In Acids With Ammonium Fluoride Added, Charles Burroughs Gill

Doctoral Dissertations

"Titanium can no longer be considered a rare metal, even though the modern era of its production came into being only a few years ago. The first discovery of titanium was in 1791 by an English clergyman, the Reverend William Gregor, and the name titanium became universally adopted when so called by a German mineralogist, Martin Klaproth, who rediscovered titanium three years later. Not until 1887 was the relatively pure, 75 percent, metal prepared by L. F. Nilson and O. Pettersson, whose experiments were repeated in 1910 by M. A. Hunter. Hunter is given credit for producing the first metallic …

Determination Of Progressive Corrosion Of Clay Flux Blocks, Ved Prakash Maheshwary Jan 1952

Determination Of Progressive Corrosion Of Clay Flux Blocks, Ved Prakash Maheshwary

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Problem. Corrosion of refractories by molten corrosive liquids like molten slags and glasses is of general occurrence in those parts of the furnaces where they come in contact with the liquids. The life of a furnace generally depends upon the progressive rate of corrosion of the refractories by the slags and glasses. There have been various methods used by the investigators to ascertain the useful life of a refractory product before its use in the furnaces, but the problem is so complex that even after decades of research work by the research engineers and technologists a satisfactory and easy …

Progress Report: Reduction Of Zinc Sulfide, Merritt E. Langston Jul 1951

Progress Report: Reduction Of Zinc Sulfide, Merritt E. Langston

Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy Reports

To date the work which has been completed has been concerned with an attempt to duplicate the results reported by Liu in his thesis. In short, little can be said in comparing the two separate investigations because there does not seem to be any apparent similarity, even though the operating conditions were kept as nearly the same as possible. Figure 1 shows the lack of agreement for the amount of total zinc distilled, expressed as weight percent....

Cellulose Pellets, John J. O'Neill Jr. Jan 1951

Cellulose Pellets, John J. O'Neill Jr.

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis describes the development of a new process for the manufacture of spherical particles of cellulose, regenerated from cellulose zanthate.

An electric equipment manufacturing company advised the author’s company that it had developed a device that required uniform spheres of regenerated cellulose having a diameter of about 75 to 100 mils. This company reported that it had developed a process for the manufacture of the cellulose particles but that the spheres produced by the process were not uniformly spherical. The equipment manufacturer considered that the functioning of the new device could be improved if the cellulose particles could be …

Oil Field Corrosion, Edwin Harry Barsachs Jan 1951

Oil Field Corrosion, Edwin Harry Barsachs

Masters Theses

"The corrosion of metals in the petroleum industry has become an important engineering problem. The rapid increase during recent years in costs of steel has caused the industry to intensify its efforts to minimize corrosion losses in pipe lines and well casings. An industry-wide research program has resulted in the development of improved methods of controlling corrosion of such equipment.

The purpose of this paper is to assemble and correlate the information concerning the different causes, the detection, and the mitigation of corrosion of metals used in the oil fields of the world. The causes that are presented in this …

The Use Of Oil-Base Drilling Fluids, William Wesley Collins Jan 1951

The Use Of Oil-Base Drilling Fluids, William Wesley Collins

Masters Theses

"Within the past few years the development of oil-base drilling fluids has become one of the more important contributions to drilling and production technology. The use or these new muds has increased as the benefits obtained have become more widely known and appreciated. Major problems in the petroleum industry have been, for many years, the contamination or drilling muds by salt water; control of mud when drilling through anhydrite, gypsum, or salt deposits; control of heaving or swelling shale; and water or mud blocking or the producing horizons. The development or oil-base drilling fluids is a direct contribution or engineers …

The Relationship Of Regional Structural Geology To The Ore Deposits In The Southeastern Missouri Mining District, Jack Alexander James Jan 1951

The Relationship Of Regional Structural Geology To The Ore Deposits In The Southeastern Missouri Mining District, Jack Alexander James

Doctoral Dissertations

"The lead deposits in the Southeastern Missouri mining district have been examined by numerous geologists and mining engineers since the original discovery about 1720. A list of the men who have reported on them includes some of the outstanding students of ore deposits.

The regional geology in the mining district either was unknown or only vaguely known when most of the early examinations were made, and the discussions of the structural geology are restricted in scope owing to the lack of detailed information. The reports based on these examinations, although excellent for their time, are incomplete in view of the …

Analysis Of Conductor Vibration, Robert H. Nau Jan 1951

Analysis Of Conductor Vibration, Robert H. Nau

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Considerable attention has been given to conductor vibration of suspended transmission lines during the past 25 years. Even so, the engineers of the public utilities feel that they have only started to get a solution to the vibration problems. Extensive research programs are being conducted at the present time by manufacturers of conductor cable and ground wires and by numerous public utilities themselves.

Aeolian vibrations are the chief concern because they occur whenever a steady wind, of from one mile per hour to hurricane velocity, blows across the suspended line. Thus, millions of flexures, however small or large in amplitude, …

Recovering Oil From An Unconsolidated Sand By Means Of Combustion, David K. Anderson Jan 1951

Recovering Oil From An Unconsolidated Sand By Means Of Combustion, David K. Anderson

Masters Theses

"For many years, there has been talk expressing great concern about the oil reserves in the United States. Every four or five years, articles are published stating that we are running out of oil and our proved reserves, to date, are only adequate, at our present rate of consumption, for about 20 years. While this is true, it does not leave us with the complete picture. The industry in the past 20 years has never had more than a 20 year reserve. It must be said, however, that it is becoming more difficult with each passing year to find oil …

Stress Analysis Of Thin Bedded Mine Roofs Subjected To Evenly Distributed Lateral Load And Supported By Barrier Pillars, Sahap Sakip Aybat Jan 1951

Stress Analysis Of Thin Bedded Mine Roofs Subjected To Evenly Distributed Lateral Load And Supported By Barrier Pillars, Sahap Sakip Aybat

Masters Theses

“Theoretical stress analysis in mine structures begins with the assumption that the structural elements are homogeneous, isotropic and perfectly elastic. It is this writers belief that stresses in a mine roof supported by barrier pillars may be compared to those stresses which may be found in a thin plate supported and restrained in the manner similar to such a mine roof. Therefore the stress and moment equations developed for plates are herein applied to mine roofs of limited thickness.

A thin roof bed which is stressed with evenly distributed lateral load and supported with barrier pillars will be regarded as …

Air Flow Through Cloth Screening, Kurt Rauf Basakinci Jan 1951

Air Flow Through Cloth Screening, Kurt Rauf Basakinci

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to obtain an expression whereby flow of air through woven cloth can be predicted with a reasonable degree of accuracy, in terms of the pressure drop across the screen, the density, the viscosity of the air flowing; these latter properties being functions of the pressure and temperature of the air.

The development of an expression from which to predict the relationship between the air flow through a screen and the pressure drop across it without resort to experimental procedure seems to the author to be worthwhile undertaking.

The chief aim of this investigation was …

Investigation Of Stress And Crack Distribution In Concrete Slabs Containing Welded Wire Reinforcement, Joseph H. Senne Jan 1951

Investigation Of Stress And Crack Distribution In Concrete Slabs Containing Welded Wire Reinforcement, Joseph H. Senne

Masters Theses

"Concrete is daily becoming more important as a structural material. However, without steel reinforcement, concrete would never have attained such wide use since, being weak in tension, it must be combined with some other material to take the tension stresses and prevent the tension cracks in the concrete from opening an appreciable amount.

One type of steel reinforcement used particularly for footings, beams and columns is known as deformed bar. In this case deformations are placed on the bars at the time of rolling. These deformations act as mechanical anchorage in preventing the bar from slipping, thus allowing it to …

The Effect Of Back Pressure Created By A Venturi Tube On Power Output And Efficiency Of An Internal Combustion Engine, James J. Trace Jan 1951

The Effect Of Back Pressure Created By A Venturi Tube On Power Output And Efficiency Of An Internal Combustion Engine, James J. Trace

Masters Theses

"The exhaust pressure against which an engine works affects the amount of pumping losses, the volumetric efficiency and the rate of advance of the flame front during the combustion process.

When the back pressure is decreased to the same pressure as the intake pressure, the amount of negative work done during the exhaust-intake process approaches the positive work done during the process. It can be seen from a PV diagram that it is possible to make this negative work less than the positive work and gain work during the process.

Because of the "15 to 30 degrees” of intake valve …

An Investigation Of Ruthenium As A Possible Ceramic Colorant, John Charles Williams Jan 1951

An Investigation Of Ruthenium As A Possible Ceramic Colorant, John Charles Williams

Masters Theses

"Some portion of almost every writing dealing with the historical development of ceramic products is devoted to describing the application of colors as found on even the most ancient specimens known to exist. A vase bearing the name of an Egyptian king living 5000 B. C. was glazed in green and inlaid with purple. There are many such examples of the utilization of color in ceramics which illustrate to a certain extent the aesthetic tastes of the very earliest and primitive civilizations.

In those early times, only a few elements were known and available that could be used for such …

A Study Of An Industrial Waste Produced In The Manufacture Of Titanox, Kurt H. Frank Jan 1951

A Study Of An Industrial Waste Produced In The Manufacture Of Titanox, Kurt H. Frank

Masters Theses

"The problem involved in this thesis is definitely of an industrial nature in that it deals specifically with waste from a plant that is primarily concerned with the manufacture of pigment.

….the plant does have a method of recovering the soluble titanium by returning the overflow from the Dorr thickener to the digestion tanks to dilute (cut) the digestions. However, in the underflow (sewer) there is a tremendous amount of sludge that is sent directly into the nearest stream because of failure to realize something economical to do with it. This sludge contains roughly 30 per cent solids of the …

A Study Of Some Raw Materials For The Manufacture Of Silica Brick, Charles E. Shulze Jan 1951

A Study Of Some Raw Materials For The Manufacture Of Silica Brick, Charles E. Shulze

Masters Theses

"The ability of silica to carry a load to within a few degrees of its melting point and its tolerance for comparatively high concentrations of iron oxide and lime, have enabled it to maintain its position as the number one steelplant refractory. It is estimated that at least half of the volume of refractories used in the steel plant are silica bricks. Consequently the manufacture of silica refractories forms an industry of considerable importance.

Raw materials suitable for the manufacture of silica brick are widely distributed, but only a small number of deposits are used commercially for one reason or …

The Effect Of Temper Carbon Nodule Number On The Physical Properties Of A Malleable Iron, William J. Ruprecht Jan 1951

The Effect Of Temper Carbon Nodule Number On The Physical Properties Of A Malleable Iron, William J. Ruprecht

Masters Theses

"It is known that the number of temper carbon nodules per unit volume of malleable iron has an effect on both the rate of anneal and on the resulting physical properties, but neither have been clearly worked out quantitatively. The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain the effect of temper carbon nodule number on certain of the physical properties of a commercial malleable iron.

Quantitative determinations of the effect of temper carbon nodule number would be essential from a theoretical viewpoint in working out the mechanism of graphtization, and would be useful in commercial practice in showing the most …

Uses And Advantages Of Short Period Delay Blasting Systems In Mining And Quarrying, Irving C. Falk Jan 1951

Uses And Advantages Of Short Period Delay Blasting Systems In Mining And Quarrying, Irving C. Falk

Masters Theses

"One of the most recent developments in blasting practice is that of applying the principle of short period delay electric blasting. In this type of electric blasting, instead or having all holes fire at one time, each hole or group of holes is a shot in itself. To provide a short period delay, of a few thousandths of a second, between each hole or group of holes, either millisecond (split-second) delay electric blasting caps or a suitable delayed action blasting switch may be used.

Short period delay electric blasting systems were originally developed for use by quarries in or near …

Well Interference In The South Silica Field, Langdon B. Taylor Jan 1951

Well Interference In The South Silica Field, Langdon B. Taylor

Masters Theses

"During World War II the Federal Government restricted oil-field drilling in the United States in order to conserve steel. The wartime regulations required 40-acre spacing in most areas. At the close of the war, the Federal drilling restrictions were lifted, and control of oil-well spacing reverted to the several state regulatory bodies. Each of these state agencies was then confronted with this problem: should 40-acre spacing be continued or should pre-war 10- and 20-acre spacing patterns be re-established?

The regulatory authority in Kansas, the State Corporation Commission, ordered an investigation in January, 1946, for the purpose of developing information upon …
