Incremental Development Model Using Vacant Buildings For Affordable Housing, Seogjae Choi, Boyoung Michelle Huh

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vacant properties have increased and become a problem in cities in the US. Few studies addressed how to utilize vacant properties for affordable housing despite they can be a great resource for affordable housing. To improve affordable housing sustainability, researchers recommended incremental development because it can satisfy residents' dynamic demands over time and engage them in house design. This can be implemented by utilizing vacant buildings to maximize their potential for affordable housing. Through the literature review, critical sustainability criteria for affordable housing are yielded. This paper demonstrates how the incremental development of vacant buildings satisfies the critical sustainability criteria. …

Offshore drilling operations consist of complex and high-risk processes. Lack of situational awareness in drilling operations has become an important human factor issue that causes safety accidents. Prolonged work shifts and fatigue are some of the crucial issues that impact performance. Eye tracking technology can be used to distinguish the degree of awareness or alertness of participants that might be related to fatigue or onsite distractions. Oculomotor activity can be used to obtain visual cues that can quantify the drilling operators' situational awareness that might enable us to develop warning alarms to alert the driller. Such systems can help reduce …

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of The Gurney Method For Small Scale Fragmentation Propulsion Using Exploding Bridgewire Detonators, Emily M. Johnson, Rachel L. Bauer, Catherine E. Johnson Jan 2023

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of The Gurney Method For Small Scale Fragmentation Propulsion Using Exploding Bridgewire Detonators, Emily M. Johnson, Rachel L. Bauer, Catherine E. Johnson

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Explosives are common in military, mining, and construction applications where the explosive properties are understood, but mechanics of how the explosive's energy fragments and throws materials are less known. Considering the type of confining material around an explosive, creates variability in fragmentation behavior due to the individual material characteristics. The most common method for assessing fragmentation behavior is the Gurney method, which eliminates any consideration of fragmenting material properties. The Gurney method assumes that, on a large scale, the inconsistencies in material are irrelevant and only the mass of the confiner need be considered. However, it is known in many …

Explosion Resistance Of Reinforced Concrete Refuge Alternative Wall Under Certain Abutment Loading, K. E. Karadeniz, D. Guner, Taghi Sherizadeh

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are used to provide safe havens for miners unable to escape their working area after an accident like an explosion. These underground infrastructures are built over time in various locations and might expose to mining-induced stresses. The convergences related to these stress redistributions around the mine openings might change their structural integrity and, subsequently, the explosion resistivity. Studying the effect of increasing vertical load like abutment stress on such underground mine stopping for the explosion resistance is difficult because repetitive explosion experiments on these structures are perilous and challenging. This study uses two case studies …

Nonprehensile Manipulation Of A Stick Using Impulsive Forces, Aakash Khandelwal, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of nonprehensile manipulation of a stick in three-dimensional space using intermittent impulsive forces is considered. The objective is to juggle the stick between a sequence of configurations that are rotationally symmetric about the vertical axis. The dynamics of the stick is described by five generalized coordinates and three control inputs. Between two consecutive configurations where impulsive inputs are applied, the dynamics is conveniently represented by a Poincaré map in the reference frame of the juggler. Stabilization of the orbit associated with a desired juggling motion is accomplished by stabilizing a fixed point on the Poincaré map. The Impulse …

Extending The Nno Ballistic Limit Equation To Foam-Filled Dual-Wall Systems, William P. Schonberg

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A key component in the quantitative assessment of the risk posed to spacecraft by the micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) environment is frequently referred to as a ballistic limit equation (BLE). A frequently used BLE for dual-wall configurations (which are commonly used on spacecraft to protect them against the MMOD environment) is the New Non-Optimum, or "NNO", BLE. In design applications where a BLE is needed for a new structural system that has not yet been tested, but resembles to a fair degree a dual-wall system, it is common practice to equivalence the materials, thicknesses, etc., of the new system …

Polymer injection molding processes have been used to create high-volume parts quickly and efficiently. Injection molding uses mold plates that are traditionally made of very hard tool steels, such as P20 steel, which is extremely heavy and has very long lead times to build new molds. In this study, composite-based additive manufacturing (CBAM) was used to create mold plates using long-fiber carbon fiber and polyether ether ketone (PEEK). These mold plates were installed in an injection molding machine, and rectangular flat plates were produced using Lustran 348 acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Tensile and flexural testing was performed on these parts …

Assembly activity recognition and prediction help to improve productivity, quality control, and safety measures in smart factories. This study aims to sense, recognize, and predict a worker's continuous fine-grained assembly activities in a manufacturing platform. We propose a two-stage network for workers' fine-grained activity classification by leveraging scene-level and temporal-level activity features. The first stage is a feature awareness block that extracts scene-level features from multi-visual modalities, including red, green blue (RGB) and hand skeleton frames. We use the transfer learning method in the first stage and compare three different pre-trained feature extraction models. Then, we transmit the feature information …

Reinforcement Learning-Guided Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming For Enhanced Convergence And Optimality, Chaoying Pei, Zhi Xu, Sixiong You, Jeffrey Sun, Ran Dai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the context of Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) with dynamic parameters, the effectiveness of various optimization approaches is heavily influenced by the quality of the initial guess. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages reinforcement learning (RL) to generate high-performing initial guesses for iterative algorithms, with the dynamic parameters serving as inputs. Our approach aims to accelerate convergence and improve the objective value, thereby enabling efficient and effective solutions to the QCQP problem under variability. In this study, we evaluate the proposed approach by applying it to an iterative algorithm, specifically the Iterative Rank …

Mixed-Input Learning For Multi-Point Landing Guidance With Hazard Avoidance Part Ii: Learning-Based Guidance Algorithm, Sixiong You, Chaoying Pei, Vinay Kenny, Ran Dai, Jeremy R. Rea

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the three-dimensional (3D) multi-point landing guidance (MLG) problem with hazard avoidance by developing a mixed-input learning-based method to achieve precise and fuel-efficient planetary landing in future Mars missions. Specifically, we aim to find a safe, fuel-efficient landing point and generate a fuel-optimal trajectory simultaneously in real-time. First, by introducing binary variables, the MLG problem is formulated as an optimal control problem with quadratic constraints. Then, by formulating the Hamiltonian function, the necessary conditions of optimality for the MLG problem are obtained, where the critical parameters are identified to represent the complete optimal solution. After that, to find …

The abort mission refers to the mission where the landing vehicle needs to terminate the landing mission when an anomaly happens and be safely guided to the desired orbit. This paper focuses on solving the time-optimal abort guidance (TOAG) problem in real-time via the feature-based learning method. First, according to the optimal control theory, the features are identified to represent the optimal solutions of TOAG using a few parameters. After that, a sufficiently large dataset of time-optimal abort trajectories is generated offline by solving the TOAG problems with different initial conditions. Then the features are extracted for all generated cases. …

Distributed Optimization For Rank-Constrained Semidefinite Programs, Chaoying Pei, Sixiong You, Chuangchuang Sun, Ran Dai Jan 2023

Distributed Optimization For Rank-Constrained Semidefinite Programs, Chaoying Pei, Sixiong You, Chuangchuang Sun, Ran Dai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This letter develops a distributed optimization framework for solving the rank-constrained semidefinite programs (RCSPs). Since the rank constraint is non-convex and discontinuous, solving an optimization problem with rank constraints is NP-hard and notoriously time-consuming, especially for large-scale RCSPs. In the proposed approach, by decomposing an unknown matrix into a set of submatrices with much smaller sizes, the rank constraint on the original matrix is equivalently transformed into a set of constraints on the decomposed submatrices. The distributed framework allows parallel computation of subproblems while requiring coordination among them to satisfy the coupled constraints. As the scale of every subproblem solved …

Orbital Stabilization Of Underactuated Systems Using Time Period Regulation, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee Jan 2023

Orbital Stabilization Of Underactuated Systems Using Time Period Regulation, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new approach to orbital stabilization of under-actuated systems with one passive degree-of-freedom (DOF) is presented. Virtual holonomic constraints are enforced using partial feedback linearization; this results in a dense set of periodic orbits on a constraint manifold. Every orbit on the constraint manifold is associated with a unique time-period. A desired orbit is selected, and the impulse controlled Poincaré map (ICPM) approach is utilized to stabilize the orbit by regulating the time-period. By treating the time period as the output, it is possible to design a dead-beat controller that achieves orbital stabilization in a single time-step. The effectiveness of …

Wideband Inverse Matrix For Radiated Two-Stage Mimo Measurements, Jun Li, Bin Lin, Yihong Qi, James L. Drewniak, Jiang Zhu, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology is one of the significant components in the growing fifth-generation (5G) communication systems. The 5G system has expanded its frequency range and widened the bandwidth to achieve higher throughput rates and more stable wireless qualities, which brings new challenges to the over-the-air (OTA) MIMO evaluations. The wide bandwidth introduces systematic uncertainties into the MIMO measurement because of the increased amplitude and phase variation issues under different frequencies in the wideband signals, and it could lead to invalid MIMO throughput measurement results when severe. The effect on antenna isolation resulting from amplitude and phase variation in …

Sample Considerations For Short-Circuited Filled Transmission Line Measurements, Jared Sinkey, Alexander Hook, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microwave materials characterization can be performed using a number of well-established measurement approaches. One such approach, the short-circuited rectangular waveguide (SC-RWG) filled transmission line approach, is known to have sample placement restrictions related to measurement reliability. This work focuses on this approach as a viable solution for microwave materials characterization of liquid materials and addresses the measurement restrictions within the context of sample length and dielectric properties. It is shown via simulation and measurement that samples of length greater than g/6 (where g is the wavelength in the RWG) do not have the reported measurement restrictions, nor do materials with …

Thermal Diffusivity Materials Characterization Via Active Microwave Thermography, Logan M. Wilcox, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Active microwave thermography (AMT) is a relatively new nondestructive evaluation method which is proposed in this work for thermal materials characterization. Specifically, AMT is investigated as a single-sided measurement option for out-of-plane thermal diffusivity (a parameter traditionally measured using a two-sided technique). Simulation and measurement results support the use of AMT for such a characterization for materials backed by an electromagnetically absorptive material. Both lossless and lossy materials may be measured, with better accuracy for lossless materials. The effect of heating time was also considered. The results indicate that for the 50 W system used here, 100 seconds of electromagnetic …

A Methodology For Predicting Acoustic Noise From Singing Capacitors In Mobile Devices, Xin Yan, Jianmin Zhang, Songping Wu, Ming Feng Xue, Chi Kin Benjamin Leung, Eric A. Macintosh, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) connected to a power distribution network (PDN) can create acoustic noise through a combination of the power rail noise at the MLCCs and the piezoelectric effect of the capacitor's ceramic material. The deformation of the MLCCs brought on by power supply noise creates vibrations which cause the printed circuit board (PCB) to vibrate and generate the audible acoustic noise. In the following paper, a simulation methodology is presented to analyze the acoustic noise created by MLCCs on a PCB. A simulation model for the PCB vibration modal response is built and the modal superposition method is …

Esd Events To Wearable Medical Devices In Healthcare Environments—Part 1: Current Measurements, Mehdi Kohani, Javad Meiguni, David J. Pommerenke, Michael G. Pecht

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wearable medical devices are widely used for monitoring and treatment of patients. Electrostatic discharge can render these devices unreliable and cause a temporary or permanent disturbance in their operation. In a healthcare environment, severe electrostatic discharge (ESD) can occur while a patient, lying down or sitting on a hospital bed with a wearable device, discharges the device via a grounded bedframe. To protect the devices from ESD damage, the worst-case discharge conditions in the usage environment need to be identified. Previous studies by authors revealed that such events could be more severe than the conventional human metal model (HMM). However, …
