The Application Of Impact Dampers To Continuous Systems, Ranjit Kumar Roy Jan 1972

The Application Of Impact Dampers To Continuous Systems, Ranjit Kumar Roy

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study has been made of the application of impact dampers to two types of continuous systems, a simply supported and a clamped beam. Previous efforts have included the effect of impact dampers on single degree of freedom and other systems with finite numbers of degrees of freedom.

Experimental models were tested in the laboratory and finite element computer programs were developed to calculate response. Results from calculations agree favorably with experimental tests. Further, results from the first few natural modes also compare reasonably with data published on systems with finite number of degrees of freedom.

Curves are presented which …

Methods And Applications Of Systems Identification, Allen Glenn Behring Jan 1972

Methods And Applications Of Systems Identification, Allen Glenn Behring

Doctoral Dissertations

"A "Schmidt filter" is proposed to compute an optimal orthonormal basis for a set of "noisy" filter input functions. Procedures for determining the transfer function and inverse transfer function of the filter are given. The Schmidt filter is applied to the problem of determining mathematical models of discrete, stationary, linear, dynamic systems for the case where measurements may be corrupted by noise of unknown statistics. The identification problem is reconsidered for the case where noise and signal moments are specified. Procedures are given which insure unbiased, adaptive estimates of system order and parameters for this case. These theoretical propositions are …

The Plasma Polymerization Of Vinyl Monomers. Ii. A Detailed Study Of The Plasma Polymerization Of Styrene, L. F. Thompson, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study has been made on the plasma polymerization of styrene monomer in a cold, low‐power, inductively coupled RF plasma. Styrene monomer yielded an insoluble, crosslinked film which was slightly colored. A kinetic study is reported for styrene. The effects of power level, bleed rate of monomer, pressure, and reactor geometry on the rate of polymer formation are reported. A mechanism is postulated for plasma polymerization. It was found that the initiation step was the rate controlling step and that the reaction followed a cationic polymerization scheme. Both crosslinking and discoloration of the polymers occur at the time of polymerization …

Characterization Of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) From Radiation‐Induced Polymerization In The Presence Of A Kaolin Clay Substrate, J. J. Beeson, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two types of polymer are formed in the radiation‐initiated polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA)–kaolin clay complexes. Homopolymer can be extracted from the complex by the use of organic solvents. Inserted polymer must be removed by dissolution of the polymer–clay complex with hydrofluoric acid. The polymers formed show no differences in structure (as determined by infrared analysis), had high molecular weights (1–5 x 106), and had similar molecular weight distributions (as determined by GPC). The molecular weights of the homopolymer increased as temperature increased (25°–75°C), and dose rate decreased (24.9–7.35 rads/sec). The isotacticity of the polymers when compared to irradiated bulk …

An Experimental And Numerical Study Of Elastic Strain Waves On The Center Line Of A 6061-T6 Aluminum Bar, J. L. Habberstad, K. G. Hoge, J. Earl Foster

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The elastic strain waves resulting from the impact of two 3/4-in-dia 6061-T6 aluminum bars are studied experimentally and analytically. Experimental data are obtained from strain gages on the center line and outer surface of the bar, located at various distances from the impact end of the bar. Experimental data are compared to numerical results obtained from integrating the exact equations of two-dimensional motion. In general, agreement between the numerical and experimental results is very good. © 1972 by ASME.

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability Of The Developing Laminar Flow In A Parallel-Plate Channel, T. S. Chen, T. E. Eaton

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Linear stability of the developing laminar flow of an electrically conducting, incompressible fluid in a parallel-plate channel under a transverse magnetic field is investigated. The case of small magnetic Reynolds numbers is treated. The developing flows whose stability characteristics are studied correspond to those induced by a uniform and a parabolic velocity distribution at the channel inlet. The stability of the fully developed Hartmann flow is also reexamined. Neutral stability curves and axial variations of the critical Reynolds number are presented for a range of Hartmann numbers between 0 and 4. It is found that for Hartmann numbers larger than …

Finite-Element Analysis Of Pressure Vessels, Robert L. Davis, H. Dean Keith

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The finite-element technique has been applied in the analysis of a variety of pressure vessel problems. The example problems described in this paper suggest that the finite element method is perhaps the most suitable means currently available for obtaining quick and accurate solutions for real-life pressure vessel problems. Finite-element programs can be used by the practicing engineer. Companion programs are available that can be used to check the input data and graphically display both the input and output data. © 1972 by ASME.

A Strain Energy Comparison Of Discrete Modeling For Vibrating Continuous Systems, S. K. Tolani, Richard Dale Rocke

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lumped parameter models commonly used to describe continuous one-dimensional and Bernoulli-Elder beam vibration problems have been compared on the basis of maximum system, strain energy. The consistent mass matrix approach has been included in the comparison. Standard matrix techniques have been employed to mathematically obtain desired solutions. Closed form solutions and solutions via the models to Ike system strain energy were obtained for all systems in three dynamic states: Free vibrations, constant base acceleration, and half sine base acceleration. Behavior of the strain energy errors, in general, were found to be similar to those of the frequency root errors. © …

The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson Jan 1972

The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson

Masters Theses

"The effect of high electric field strengths (10⁴ to 10⁵ V/cm) present during neutron radiation on the neutron-induced defects is determined by utilizing the high electric field strength inherent in the emitter-base transistion region of an n-p-n transistor. A method is presented for the separation of neutron and gamma effects. Previous theoretical work on the ratio of base current increase to collector current decrease is applied to experimental data. The variations of the space-charge region volume damage introduction rate with neutron fluence and the average electric field strength are determined experimentally in order to obtain a measure of this effect. …

An Accurate Digital Instrument To Measure Reactor Period, Ernest Wayne Scott Jan 1972

An Accurate Digital Instrument To Measure Reactor Period, Ernest Wayne Scott

Masters Theses

"At facilities having a research-training reactor, such as the University of Missouri-Rolla Reactor (UMRR), one finds it necessary to perform a large number of rod calibrations during the course of the year. In practice rod worths are determined by measuring the reactor period created by an incremental withdrawal of the rod under calibration. Period is then related to reactivity thru the use of a publication such as the AEC publication, TID-4500.

This frequent measurement of period makes it desirable to have a simple, automatic and accurate method to make such measurements. At UMRR we have designed, constructed and installed such …

Analysis And Measurement Of A Zener Diode Voltage-Reference, Armond C. Maxeiner Jan 1972

Analysis And Measurement Of A Zener Diode Voltage-Reference, Armond C. Maxeiner

Masters Theses

"Output voltage sensitivity equations are derived for a zener voltage-reference circuit. The circuit consists of a DC-DC converter, a voltage-resistor current generator, and a zener diode. The performance of the voltage-reference is calculated using the sensitivity equations and compared to measurement data taken from a laboratory model of the circuit. The results are in reasonable agreement.

It was concluded that with careful selection of components, two of three major sources of error can be predicted and controlled; these are changes due to input voltage and changes due to temperature. The third, changes due to time, requires calibration against a voltage …

These data along with measurements taken with the transmission tube apparatus were used to determine transmission characteristics. The calculations were simplified by terminating the filters anechoically. The filters used in this investigation were an expansion chamber, an automobile type muffler …

Digital Registration Of Stereo Images Using The Fast Fourier Transform, Victor Francis Wilreker Jr. Jan 1972

Digital Registration Of Stereo Images Using The Fast Fourier Transform, Victor Francis Wilreker Jr.

Masters Theses

"The exact alignment of multispectral imagery is a requirement of any image classification system. This investigation develops a system of programs which result in a technique that corrects for the translational and rotational misalignment of two images. Rotational and translational components are determined by using the fast Fourier transform to find the points of maximum correlation between the two images. The registration of two equal but misaligned boxes is given as an example of how the transform technique is used in correlating the images. The results of registering two digitized images that were obtained by scanning a pair of color …

Fitting Discrete Probabilistic Frequency Distributions To Disturbed Traffic Flow At An Unsignalized Urban Intersection, Horst Walter Kaminsky

Masters Theses

"Traffic variables, such as volume, speed, gaps and lags, and headways can be described by probability distributions. In this study vehicle arrivals from three directions have been recorded at a four-leg, right-angled, at-grade intersection in Rolla, Missouri, and statistically analyzed. Two distinct probabilistic statistical concepts were used, the continuous (gap) and discrete (counting) distribution. The negative exponential distribution is discussed briefly, whereas the applicability of discrete statistical models for the traffic situation selected is elaborated in detail.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the impairment and distortion that various interferences such as upstream traffic lights, bottlenecks or other …

A Study Of Fmfb Demodulator Operation In The Presence Of Radio Frequency Interference And Gaussian Noise, Terry D. Wormington

Masters Theses

"A digital computer model of an FMFB demodulator has been used to study the effects of radio frequency interference on the detection of a sinusoidally modulated carrier. The effectiveness of selecting the feedback factor to suppress the interference for three values of modulation index is investigated. Also, the required IF bandwidth for the minimization of the mean-square error of the loop output between a signal corrupted by interference and the same signal without interference was investigated. More work is required before the effects of Gaussian noise plus interference on loop operation can be ascertained"--Abstract, page ii.

A Numerical, Time Domain Solution For The Response Of A Gimbal Supported Gyro, Floyd Stanley Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

"This paper develops an algorithm to generate a numerical solution for the response of a gimbal supported gyro to arbitrary forcing functions and base motion, and includes the normal parasitic effects of bearing friction, viscous pivot damping, and pivot spring constants. There are relatively few restrictions on gyro and gimbal structure geometry. Solution accuracy is limited only by the computing machine accuracy; the algorithm being an explicit function of the input data. The algorithm is fast and requires only a moderate amount of computer memory"--Abstract, page ii.
