Effect Of Nodule Count And Cooling Rate On The Matrix Of Nodular Iron., Subrata Sen Gupta
Effect Of Nodule Count And Cooling Rate On The Matrix Of Nodular Iron., Subrata Sen Gupta
Masters Theses
"The objective of this investigation was to establish the relationship between the nodule count, the matrix structure, and the cooling rate through the eutectoid in nodular iron. The chemical composition of the nodular iron was held constant while various inoculation methods, inoculants, and mold designs, including chills, were used to vary the solidification time and cooling rate through the eutectoid range. This produced variations in both the matrix structure and the nodule count.
The nodule count has a power relationship with the percent pearlite in the matrix at fixed cooling rates: Percent pearlite = K (Nodule count)-n where the …

The second circuit features a fast initial synchronization method over a wide input frequency range.
The application 0£ the phase lock loops to the retrieval 0£ serial encoded data is investigated. Three representative data encoding methods are considered. The approximate bit density obtainable with each encoding method is calculated …
Development Of A Four Channel Cloud Nucleus Spectrometer., Larry Allan Brunner
Development Of A Four Channel Cloud Nucleus Spectrometer., Larry Allan Brunner
Masters Theses
"A four-channel vertical flow thermal diffusion chamber for use as a cloud nucleus counter is described. The droplets in each channel are photographically counted. The instrument provides about 20 seconds of available growth time, which enables better distinction of active droplets than does ii the conventional horizontal chamber. Droplet growth calculations show that the uncertainty in droplet count due to limited available growth time is negligible for supersaturations above 0.3% but increases rapidly as the supersaturation is lowered below 0.3%. For example, at 0.1% supersaturation, the uncertainty is -27% to +38% in the drop count. The possible error in supersaturation …
Experimental Determination Of Improved Aerodynamic Characteristics Utilizing Biplane Wing Configurations, Elmer Carl Olson
Experimental Determination Of Improved Aerodynamic Characteristics Utilizing Biplane Wing Configurations, Elmer Carl Olson
Masters Theses
"Improving the aerodynamic characteristics of an airplane with respect to a higher lift coefficient, a lower drag coefficient and a higher lift over drag ratio as a function of angle of attack will make it more efficient, thus conserving energy or improving performance. Investigations were carried out to determine if the aerodynamic characteristics of biplane wing systems could be made more efficient, for low subsonic speeds, than a monoplane of comparable area and aspect ratio. A variable position three-dimensional biplane wing system, and a fuselage that could be fitted with a monoplane wing or the variable position biplane wing system …
Thermal Fragmentation Of Rock - The Influence Of Temperature Dependent Material Properties., James Dale Scheller
Thermal Fragmentation Of Rock - The Influence Of Temperature Dependent Material Properties., James Dale Scheller
Masters Theses
"This investigation is concerned with a thermal rock fragmentation system employing heat to create subsurface thermal inclusions. The effectiveness of this system as applied to three different rock types is studied. The rock types are Dresser basalt, Charcoal gray granite, and Sioux quartzite. Also, the influence of temperature dependent material properties is investigated.
The actual three-dimensional problem of in situ rock fragmentation involves parallel rows of equally spaced holes drilled to a constant depth. A heat source at the bottom of each hole creates a thermal inclusion resulting in a stress field causing fracture.
Axisymmetric models of the fragmentation system …

"This work examined the feasibility of the carbon adsorption system to treat a high organic strength waste (having a COD of 8,100 mg/£) from a pharmaceutical plant, and also compared the relative treatment efficiencies of two different kinds of carbon~ Calgon Filtrasorb 400 and Darco S-51, both having the same size ranges.
The overall treatment scheme employed consisted of chemical clarification and activated carbon adsorption. Jar tests were conducted to select a proper type of coagulant and determine an optimum dosage. Batch and column adsorption studies were conducted using both carbons.
Alum was found to be a better coagulant than …
Predicting Natural Frequencies Of A Hydrodynamically Lubricated Journal Bearing With Constant Oil Supply Pressure., Dennis Charles Edwards
Predicting Natural Frequencies Of A Hydrodynamically Lubricated Journal Bearing With Constant Oil Supply Pressure., Dennis Charles Edwards
Masters Theses
"The analytical and experimental investigations presented here determined natural frequencies and system behavior of a full journal bearing loaded dynamically and with oil supply pressure held constant.
The analysis showed that the bearing could be viewed as two independent second-order systems acting perpendicular to each other. This yielded an underdamped bearing for εO < 0.5747 and an overdamped bearing for 0.655 < εO < 0.675. The analysis also showed the bearing to be unstable beyond εO = 0.675.
The analysis, however, is limited to a full journal bearing with an oil supply pressure of 20 psig. and therefore, various supply pressures should be tested to yield an overall analysis"- Abstract, p. ii

"Because of an Army Corps of Engineer proposed new dam on the Grand River 1 the original town of Pattonsburg, Missouri was to be inundated by the resulting lake reservoir formed above the dam. The city planners proposed the relocation of the town site adjacent to the new lake, forming a lake side community attractive to both a residential population and for industrial locations.
The electrical power loads of New Pattonsburg's residential, industrial, commercial, and municipal areas, as well as its street lighting power requirements, were planned for a population of 50,000. Statistical analysis of demographic surveys was employed to …
Magnetostrictive Aftereffects In A Dilute 50fe-50ni-C Alloy, Raj N. Master
Magnetostrictive Aftereffects In A Dilute 50fe-50ni-C Alloy, Raj N. Master
Masters Theses
"Crystallographically equivalent interstitial sites are energetically equivalent when the host crystal is free of any fields. This situation is shown in Fig. Pl from which it may be appreciated that the difference of the free energy of the "crystal" with an interstitial "I" located in "x" and "y" sites, respectively, is equal to zero. This energy equivalence of the various interstitial sites is destroyed when the host crystal is subjected to fields such as strain fields, magnetization fields or a combination of both as may be appreciated from Figs. P2 through P4. In this case, the interstitials will preferentially occupy …
Flow Field And Heat Transfer For Developing Flow Of Molten Glass In A Duct, Russell Ralph Beckmeyer
Flow Field And Heat Transfer For Developing Flow Of Molten Glass In A Duct, Russell Ralph Beckmeyer
Masters Theses
"The molten glass flow (temperature range 1300 to 1500°C) in the entrance region of a duct was investigated with numerical methods. The mathematical model was restricted by assuming: (1) two dimensional, steady state, (2) Newtonian fluid, variable viscosity, and (3) Rosseland approximation. In addition, appropriate use was made of the fact that the Reynolds number is small and the Eckert number is very small. The inclusion of temperature dependent viscosity and a Rosseland approximation for radiation produced from the mass, momentum, and energy equations a system of coupled, nonlinear, partial differential equations which were solved by an iterative finite difference …
Computer Analysis Of 3-Phase Induction Motor Operation On An Open-Delta Distribution System, S. Clark Seematter
Computer Analysis Of 3-Phase Induction Motor Operation On An Open-Delta Distribution System, S. Clark Seematter
Masters Theses
"Open-delta/open-delta and open-wye/open-delta transformer banks are often used as an economic means of supplying simultaneous single-phase and 3-phase loads. If the 3-phase load is an induction motor and if these banks are used, the inherent voltage unbalance causes increased losses and uneven heating that may lead to motor failure. Two previously published theories are used to predict motor heating that is caused by the unbalanced voltages and the motor derating that is necessary to prevent insulation failure"--Abstract, page ii.

Study Of The Return-On-Investment Surface Of A Small Chemical Plant, Jose Antonio Casas Martinez-Ortiz
Study Of The Return-On-Investment Surface Of A Small Chemical Plant, Jose Antonio Casas Martinez-Ortiz
Masters Theses
"A study of the return-on-investment (ROI) surfaces for a single reactor chemical plant (Westbrook (8)) with a discontinuous investment function confirms its unimodality in the valid region. In both cases studied, the return-on-investment surfaces rise smoothly to the adiabatic boundary from a singular flow rate below which two of the component flow are not physically realizable. The optimum is located on the adiabatic boundary.
Comparison with these surfaces shows that using linear regression to obtain the parameters for an algebraic simulation of investment does not yield ROI values acceptably near the optimal. However, an heuristic approach, which assumes that minimizing …
An Investigation Of The Vertical Distribution Of Sulfur Forms In Surface Mine Spoils, Henry County, Missouri, Walter Carter Von Demfange Jr.
An Investigation Of The Vertical Distribution Of Sulfur Forms In Surface Mine Spoils, Henry County, Missouri, Walter Carter Von Demfange Jr.
Masters Theses
"Samples of material in the spoil banks left by surface coal mining operations in Henry County Missouri were taken from various depths and preserved to prevent further oxidation of the pyrite in the samples. Quantitative determinations were then made for sulfate and sulfide sulfur. It was shown that near the surface the sulfide sulfur concentrations were much lower than those at greater depth while sulfate concentrations were higher near the surface than at depth. Since this is probably the effect of years of oxidation of the pyrite, it can be used to show at what depth the pyrite is being …
Waste Heat Utilization From A Direct Cycle High Temperature Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor For District Heating And Air Conditioning, John Joseph Blase
Waste Heat Utilization From A Direct Cycle High Temperature Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor For District Heating And Air Conditioning, John Joseph Blase
Masters Theses
"An analysis was conducted to determine the economic as well as technical feasibility of waste heat utilization from the proposed direct cycle high temperature gas cooled nuclear reactor, as designed by the General Atomic Company.
The rejected heat from this system is at considerably higher temperatures than those normally encountered in conventional steam-electric Rankine cycles. By taking advantage of these higher rejection temperatures, heat was translated into energy available to a district heating and air conditioning service. The transportation of this energy was considered to be in the form of heated and chilled water.
A refrigeration capacity on the order …

Laser Holographic Interferometric Investigation Of Heat Transfer About An Isothermal Vertical Flat Plate, Richard Michael Quinlisk
Laser Holographic Interferometric Investigation Of Heat Transfer About An Isothermal Vertical Flat Plate, Richard Michael Quinlisk
Masters Theses
"A study of the laser holographic interferometer was conducted to compare heat transfer data obtained with the device to standard free convection boundary layer theory. The system studied was an isothermal vertical flat plate. The interferometer was used to obtain fringe patterns of the boundary layer at the plate surface.
Data from the holographic interferograms were recorded by making conventional two-dimensional photographs of the holographic images.
The optical data are shown to have a good correlation to Von-Karman theory. Values of the boundary layer thickness, temperature distribution, and heat transfer were compared. An attempt was made to probe the boundary …
Two-Dimensional Radiative Transfer In A Finite Scattering Mediu, James Warren Koewing
Two-Dimensional Radiative Transfer In A Finite Scattering Mediu, James Warren Koewing
Masters Theses
"Exact formulations are presented for the source function, intensity and flux for a two-dimensional, isotropically scattering medium of finite thickness. Spatially varying collimated and diffuse radiation of the following types are incident on the medium: (1) cosine varying, (2) semi-infinite step, (3) step at the origin, and (4) finite strip. The solutions for the cosine varying collimated boundary condition are used to construct solutions for the other boundary conditions. The two-dimensional integral equations are reduced to one-dimensional equations by separating variables. Through a series of transformations, the one-dimensional equations are put into a form in which the source function, intensity …
A Study Of Pollution Abatement From The F-15 Jet Engine Test Stand, Gary Joseph Fennewald
A Study Of Pollution Abatement From The F-15 Jet Engine Test Stand, Gary Joseph Fennewald
Masters Theses
"The pollutants emitted from jet engine test stands are carbon particles, unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and the oxides of nitrogen. This work is a study of various ways of removing these pollutants from the test stand exhaust. The methods investigated include absorption, adsorption, electrostatic precipitation, filtration, catalytic reduction and oxidation, and thermal oxidation.
For abatement of nitrogen oxides, none of the present methods is considered to provide adequate technical reliability to proceed with an installation at this time. Each of the methods for removal of nitrogen oxides has high capital and operating cost; and, in many cases, secondary pollution problems …
Laboratory Evaluation Of Dynamic Soil Properties By Ultrasonic Testing Methods, Ronald Maurice Eckelkamp
Laboratory Evaluation Of Dynamic Soil Properties By Ultrasonic Testing Methods, Ronald Maurice Eckelkamp
Masters Theses
"Measurement of ultrasonic compression and shear wave velocities through a soil material has been made with a pulse wave generator developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The variation of these velocities along with the behavior of the dynamic material parameters of the material (Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio) with void ratio and degree of saturation were determined. Compression wave velocity, shear wave velocity, Young's modulus and shear modulus were found to decrease with increasing void ratio; degree of saturation was of little influence. Wave attenuation could not be measured by the test procedure used"--Abstract, page ii.
Calculation Of The Neutron Flux In The Side Regions Of The Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Of A High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, Richard Robert Kent Jr.
Calculation Of The Neutron Flux In The Side Regions Of The Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Of A High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, Richard Robert Kent Jr.
Masters Theses
"Neutron flux in the side regions of the High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor's (HTGR) Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel (PCRV) was determined using the Monte Carlo method. One quarter of the PCRV was modeled, with all major structures inside it, e.g. steam generator, auxiliary cooling loop, etc. imaged at their exact position and size. Initial neutron energies range from .001 eV to 3 MeV. Three neutron interactions were considered: absorbtion, elastic scattering, and inelastic scattering.
The flux was calculated for two different PCRV temperatures, 155° F and 647° F. The thermal flux showed a minor increase at the higher temperature. In …

Transformer Connection Study For 138 Kv To 12.47 Kv Substations Of The Union Electric Company St. Louis, Missouri, John Glenn Walsh
Masters Theses
"This thesis examines the transformer connections that can be used in the new 138-12.47 kV substations on the Union Electric power system. The object is to determine if a zero phase shift transformer without a delta connected tertiary winding can be used and economically justified. Traditionally a delta winding has been automatically included for this application without taking engineering time and effort to study all ramifications including possible dollar savings available with other connections. Three transformer manufacturers supplied technical and cost data which are analyzed, based on Union Electric system conditions. Consideration of relaying, harmonics and unbalanced loading shows that …
Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Strontium Titanate By Capacitance Manometry, Douglas Bugh Schwarz
Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Strontium Titanate By Capacitance Manometry, Douglas Bugh Schwarz
Masters Theses
"The use of the tensi-volumetric apparatus to study the non-stoichiometric behavior of strontium titanate was discussed. Oxidation kinetics of reduced single crystal strontium titanate were measured with an ultrasensitive capacitance manometer as the sample absorbed oxygen in response to a changing oxygen activity.
The oxidation kinetics were found to fit a solution to Fick's second law for rectangularly shaped samples....
The procedure selected for measurement of the oxidation kinetics, and the method of obtaining diffusion coefficients from the oxidation data was discussed along with potential sources of error of the system"--Abstract, page ii.

Knudsen Effusion Study Of The Vaporization Of Cdo(S), R. Tom Coyle, Gordon Lewis
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Knudsen effusion studies were conducted on CdO(s) in fused‐SiO2 Knudsen cells from 889 to 1110 K. The orifice size was varied; the largest cell orifice yielded a calculated pressure significantly lower than could be accounted for by experimental error. Average‐slope‐ and average‐free‐energy‐function‐based values of ΔHc298 were 86.9 ± 1.1 and 88.8 ± 0.5 kcal/mol, respectively. The data from the present work were combined with those of previous investigators using a method discussed by McCreary and Thorn; a ΔHc298 of 88.2 ± 0.2 kcal/mol was obtained. Using this combined value for ΔHc298 and ΔSc298= 51.40 ± 0.1 eu (obtained from the …
Thermal Decomposition Of Boron Triiodide On Molybdenum Field Emitter Surfaces, Richard E. Moore, P. Darrell Ownby
Thermal Decomposition Of Boron Triiodide On Molybdenum Field Emitter Surfaces, Richard E. Moore, P. Darrell Ownby
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Boron has been adsorbed onto molybdenum field emitter surfaces by the thermal decomposition of boron triiodide at corrected partial pressures of 1.4 x 10-9 Torr to 4.5 x 10-9 Torr. Based on field emission work function data and an analytical work function versus adsorbate-coverage relationship, a quantitative measure of the monolayer coverage of boron on molybdenum has been determined; this value is 6.3 x 1014 atoms/cm2/monolayer. A parameter, β, is defined which is a measure of the effective yield of adsorbed boron on molyb-denum from BI3. β is formulated in terms of the free energy of dissociation of the BI3 …
