Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1974

Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of three stereo radar techniques is compared with respect to both theoretical performance and performance in the presence of errors. The three techniques are: an improved single flight technique, a previously proposed single flight technique, and a two flight technique. Theoretical data for comparison of image parameters affecting performance have been generated with computer simulations of the imaging geometries for the techniques. The comparison shows that the improved technique will have images with greater similarity resulting in improved stereo viewability and measurability. Computer simulations have also been used to generate sensitivities of computed terrain point coordinates to system …

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (Acdl), Gregory M. Bednar, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This correspondence describes a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL) for specifying the terminal behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. The language is a valuable tool for formalizing and documenting asynchronous designs, as well as providing a user interface to a completely automated synthesis system. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior and is best suited for problems that are currently being described informally by word statements. On Finding A Minimal Multiple Fault Test Set In Combinational Networks., Dang Quang Tam

Masters Theses

"A simple and systematic approach which generates exactly a minimal multiple fault test set T mm in irredundant combinational networks is presented. It is shown that the Equivalent Sum of Product of a given network contains all the information necessary to determine this minimal test set. The failures which may occur are limited to permanent stuck at O (or 1) faults"-- Abstract, p. ii

The Control Of Noise In Urban Areas., Edwin Eugene Frye Jr. Jan 1974

The Control Of Noise In Urban Areas., Edwin Eugene Frye Jr.

Masters Theses

"Noise has recently been labeled the 'fourth pollutant' and defined by some as the 'unwanted sound' that pervades our work environments and the privacy of our homes. This concern for noise and its effects has resulted from our nation's increasing population density, the increasing use of mechanized conveniences, the influx and growing use of mass transportation systems, and the public's awareness that noise not only 'annoys' and can increase everyday tensions and anxieties, but at certain levels can cause permanent hearing loss.

In order to curb the 'noise problem' legislators and municipal representatives began applying legal controls to noisy activities …

Regional Geological Engineering Mapping By Erts-1 Imagery A Case Study On Taiwan., Shih-Tsu Chen Jan 1974

Regional Geological Engineering Mapping By Erts-1 Imagery A Case Study On Taiwan., Shih-Tsu Chen

Masters Theses

"Three types of maps of Taiwan were made by using color composites of ERTS-1 images. The three types of maps, consisting of a regional land use map, an offshore sediment distribution map, and a tectonic map, were made from a color composite imagery utilizing Diazo chrome and Esco chrome films with a planimetrically accuracy sufficient for a 1:1,000,000 scale map.

Color enhanced imagery was found to increase the accuracy level of the land use interpretation. Three color enhancement techniques were used to increase the color contrast between the scenes of different land use. Particular land use scenes required a special …

An Analysis Of The (N-1,N) Pad ̌Approximant To The Ideal Delay Operator In Terms Of Bessell Functions., Carl Richard Erdmann Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The (N-1,N) Pad ̌Approximant To The Ideal Delay Operator In Terms Of Bessell Functions., Carl Richard Erdmann

Masters Theses

"A realizable, lowpass, non-minimum phase approximation to the ideal distortion less delay operator e-st0 is analyzed in terms of the Bessel functions. The characteristics of the first ten members of the approximation are explicitly considered in this paper. The approximation is demonstrated to be realizable for all orders. Amplitude and phase characteristics are described in relation to the ideal delay operator in compact form and in terms of existing ii tabulated functions. Both amplitude and delay bandwidths are characterized by simple and accurate approximations. The maximally flat properties of both amplitude and delay responses are demonstrated. The transient …

On The Extension Of The Output Capabilities Of Flowware, A Graphical Interactive Digital System Simulator., R. Dean Delker Jan 1974

On The Extension Of The Output Capabilities Of Flowware, A Graphical Interactive Digital System Simulator., R. Dean Delker

Masters Theses

"A research effort which addresses the problem of providing output from a register transfer level digital simulator which allows the user to better understand how his simulated system functions are described. A review of the output capabilities of existing register transfer level systems indicates that a strictly textual output leaves much to be desired, and for that reason, this work concentrates on developing forms of meaningful graphical output displays. This criterion of "meaningfulness" can be considered as a twofold objective to be reached in that the output must both reflect the functioning of the system and be presented in a …

Amine Flotation Of Feldspar From Magnetite Concentrate., Gary William Hudiburgh Jr. Jan 1974

Amine Flotation Of Feldspar From Magnetite Concentrate., Gary William Hudiburgh Jr.

Masters Theses

"The gangue in some magnetite ore bodies contains feldspar; the alkali content of the feldspar reduces the usefulness of these iron ores. One method of decreasing the feldspar content in magnetite concentrate is froth flotation.

The amine flotation of feldspar from magnetite concentrate was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The zeta potential of various feldspars (microcline, albite, anorthite, oligoclase and anorthoclase) were determined as a function of pH; the point of zero charge ranged from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using two amine reagents were conducted on the feldspars. …

Liquid Metal Heat Transfer In Longitudinal Flow Along A Cylinder And Flat Plate., Marvin Eugene Lohmann Jan 1974

Liquid Metal Heat Transfer In Longitudinal Flow Along A Cylinder And Flat Plate., Marvin Eugene Lohmann

Masters Theses

"In this investigation an analytical study is performed to determine the effect of axial heat conduction on laminar forced convection for longitudinal flow of liquid metals along a horizontal cylinder and a flat plate. ii

The flow and thermal boundary layers for the problems under consideration do not admit similarity solutions, the non-similarity arising from the transverse curvature; ε = (4/R) (vx/u ∞) ½ of the cylindrical surface and from co the effect of the axial heat conduction expressible as Ω = 1/Pex , where Pex is the local Peclet number. The governing conservation equations along with …

Feasibility Study Of An Electromagnetic Trap Fusion Reactor., Dennis Gilbert Blondin Jan 1974

Feasibility Study Of An Electromagnetic Trap Fusion Reactor., Dennis Gilbert Blondin

Masters Theses

"Through the use of detailed particle and energy balances, electromagnetic traps with magnetic cusps are found to be unsatisfactory for continuous operation when using only neutral particle beams to sustain a thermonuclear plasma. Low power multiplication characteristics inherent in this CTR design probably preclude supplemental plasma heating methods. However, by using an alternate Yin-Yang magnetic system, continuous CTR operating regimes are found at an ion temperature of 20 keV while assuming only neutral particle beam heating. Although these regimes require applied electrostatic potentials approaching a half-million volts, this device demonstrates a capability for efficient power production"-- Abstract, p. ii

Post Irradiation Changes Of The Elastic Modulus Of Aluminum, Dale A. Powers Jan 1974

Post Irradiation Changes Of The Elastic Modulus Of Aluminum, Dale A. Powers

Masters Theses

"Aluminum samples of 99.99% and 99.999% purity were irradiated to neutron fluences of 3·8·1018 nvt and 1.4·1019 nvt (E greater than 0.1 Mev) at one-third of the melting temperature. The change in Young's modulus of elasticity after isothermal annealing in the temperature range of 110⁰C to 130⁰C was measured. After 2.5 hours of annealing, the modulus reached a steady state value which was decreased by 0.25% ± 0.17% from the unannealed value. Electron microscopy suggests the hardening mechanisms were dispersion hardening by silicon precipitates and void hardening"--Abstract, page ii.

Two-Dimensional Radiant Interchange In A Non-Isothermal Cavity Formed By Two Semi-Infinite Parallel Plates., Robert David Allen Jan 1974

Two-Dimensional Radiant Interchange In A Non-Isothermal Cavity Formed By Two Semi-Infinite Parallel Plates., Robert David Allen

Masters Theses

"Two-dimensional radiant interchange between non-isothermal, gray diffuse surfaces with non-uniform radiosity have been investigated for a cavity formed by two semi-infinite parallel plates. The problem is solved for two specific emissive power distribution models. Both emissive power distributions decay exponentially with depth into the cavity. The first emissive power distribution varies in a cosine manner across the front of the plates and the second has a step variation across the front of the plates.

For the cosine varying model, separation of variables and Ambarzumian's method are applied to obtain an integro-differential equation for the radiosity inside the cavity, an integral …

Characterization And Pollutional Contribution Of Stormwater Runoff From A Small Urban Area., John Lamb Wendleton Jan 1974

Characterization And Pollutional Contribution Of Stormwater Runoff From A Small Urban Area., John Lamb Wendleton

Masters Theses

"Stormwater runoff from urban areas has long been recognized as a pollutional source, however, only in the last decade has there been an extensive eff ort to measure its effect on receiving lakes and streams. Because runoff from small urban communities has received limited attention, this investigation was undertaken to determine the quality and pollutional contribution of stormwater runoff from a small urban area. The specific objectives of the study were: to characterize and correlate runoff quality with land use activity and to qualitatively and quantitatively measure the pollutants discharged with respect to time.

Runoff from 3 test watersheds in …

Application Of An Inverse Heat Conduction Technique To A Simulated Injection Mold., Noel Joy Rytter Jan 1974

Application Of An Inverse Heat Conduction Technique To A Simulated Injection Mold., Noel Joy Rytter

Masters Theses

"An analytical model was constructed to investigate the heat transfer in an injection mold for which the temperature was controlled by a special mold heating-cooling process. Several techniques were used to test the validity and accuracy of the analytical model of the mold and to explain some singularities that occurred. It was determined that the thickness of the plastic part being molded is the primary factor affecting the minimum cycle time for the molding operation. Also, abrupt changes in temperature on the molding surfaces are very difficult to obtain because this requires drastic temperature changes for the working fluid that …

Effect Of Dissolved Water On Physical Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E Richard Reynolds Jan 1974

Effect Of Dissolved Water On Physical Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E Richard Reynolds

Masters Theses

"The effect of dissolved water on borate glasses containing 4-20 mol % Ag2O was investigated. Water was dissolved in the glasses by bubbling with a carrier gas (oxygen) containing different partial pressures of water vapor. A minimum in water solubility was found at 11 mol % Ag2O. Water contents in excess of 0.5 mol % H2O did not have a great effect on the transition temperature or the dilatometric softening point. Below 15 mol % Ag2O, the water content had no effect on the thermal expansion coefficients. Beyond 15 mol % Ag …

Investigation Of The Electric Field In The Vicinity Of A Water Drop Adhering To A Conductor, Jamnarn Hokierti Jan 1974

Investigation Of The Electric Field In The Vicinity Of A Water Drop Adhering To A Conductor, Jamnarn Hokierti

Masters Theses

"Electric field calculations in the vicinity of a conductor above ground are developed with constraints on the distance from the conductor for which the electric field equations can be applied for practical applications. The electric field in the vicinity of a small water drop adhering to the conductor has been calculated. Application of this electric field in the vicinity of the water drop has been used to compute the apparent surface charges and also the forces on the small water drop surface. Methods for the calculation of space charge due to ionization on the water drop has been suggested"--Abstract, page …

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu Jan 1974

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu

Masters Theses

"In the study of fluid flow over heated surfaces, it is customary to neglect the effects of buoyancy force when the flow is horizontal. However, such a practice is not justified when the forced flow is along an inclined or a vertical surface, because under these conditions the buoyancy force modifies considerably the flow field and hence the heat transfer rate from the surface. Such a flow is termed combined forced and free convective flow.

The present study is concerned with the effects of buoyancy force on forced convection along an isothermal vertical cylinder and a flat plate. This type …

The Investigation Of Video Sensitivity And Data Processing Errors Encountered In An Airborne Receiver, James Lee Hamilton Jan 1974

The Investigation Of Video Sensitivity And Data Processing Errors Encountered In An Airborne Receiver, James Lee Hamilton

Masters Theses

"The investigation of video sensitivity and both biphase demodulation and Doppler shift processing errors is performed. The effect of pass band ripple on the noise bandwidth of two pole filters is developed. The effect of feedback on the effective noise figure of a high gain IF (Intermediate Frequency) amplifier is investigated and discussed. An analysis of a limiting amplifier-biphase demodulator circuit is attempted. A computer simulation of this same circuit is also performed and the results are compared to measurements taken in the laboratory. With respect to multipath corrupted input signals, a differential phase shift keyed biphase demodulator is shown …

Diurnal Solar Heating And Cooling Of A Water Reservoir, Stephen Patrick Lepper Jan 1974

Diurnal Solar Heating And Cooling Of A Water Reservoir, Stephen Patrick Lepper

Masters Theses

"The transient diurnal heating of a water reservoir by solar radiation; and its cooling by surface convection, evaporation, and radiation emission was analytically modeled. The directional and spectral properties of the incident solar radiation, the air-water interface, and the selective attenuation of radiant energy by the water were properly included in the analysis. The diurnal vertical temperature distribution was predicted by numerically solving the energy equation using a finite difference technique. It was determined that the surface boundary conditions and the selective absorption of radiant energy by the water strongly influence the thermal stratification of stagnant water.

The diurnal compensating …

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick Jan 1974

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick

Masters Theses

"The evaluation of the effectiveness of training programs has long been recognized as a necessity in determining the allocation of investment. However, much of industry, today, still does not use an easily administered, systematic, and reliable method for determining training program effectiveness for their salaried (managerial) personnel. It is easily seen that determining training program effectiveness is not a one-shot, one-time event, but a continual process, whose aim, ultimately, is increased productivity. For the effectiveness of a training program to be adequately monitored, these four areas should be measured: (1) trainee attitude, (2) learning, (3) behavior change, and (4) productivity …

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett Jan 1974

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett

Masters Theses

"A thermal hydraulic analysis of a typical hot channel of a Dresden 2 class boiling water reactor is studied for possible severe local overheating. The COBRA-II thermal hydraulic analysis code is modified to include critical heat flux calculations for each subchannel. The effects of flow distribution, inlet mass velocity variations, dimensional tolerances, enrichment variations, and input parameters are examined in detail. Bulk channel results are in good agreement with the published data, but the assembly wall side of the corner fuel rod has a minimum critical heat flux ratio of less than unity for a number of the situations examined. …

Synthesis Of Fused Silica By Flame Hydrolysis, James Edward Rourke Jan 1974

Synthesis Of Fused Silica By Flame Hydrolysis, James Edward Rourke

Masters Theses

"Apparatus to synthesize and dope high purity, optical quality fused silica by flame hydrolysis was constructed. Fused silica samples containing 0, <35, 35 and 90 ppm niobium were synthesized and characterized by the following properties: purity, refractive index, radiation damage resistance, and transmission spectra. The properties of the undoped sample were shown to be comparable to those of available commercial fused silica. Deviations in the properties of the doped samples from those of the undoped samples were explained in terms of the niobium content"--Abstract, page ii.

An Economical-Digital Interface For Multiplex Recording Of Analog Signals, Samuel Knoles George Jan 1974

An Economical-Digital Interface For Multiplex Recording Of Analog Signals, Samuel Knoles George

Masters Theses

"In measuring and evaluating performance of an automobile and driver combination it is necessary to record data from the vehicle and driver while both are in the field.

The University of Missouri - Rolla Transportation Research Program performs this type of evaluation. The present method of recording data in the field is with a large, bulky, and somewhat fragile strip chart recorder.

The digital recording interface described in this paper is designed to permit replacement of the strip chart recorder with an audio tape recorder. The interface will allow simultaneous recording of two analog channels which may be reproduced as …

A Multiple-Plan Evaluation Model For Small Ungauged Watersheds, James R. Dexter Jan 1974

A Multiple-Plan Evaluation Model For Small Ungauged Watersheds, James R. Dexter

Masters Theses

A computer solution model is proposed for simulation of the effect of alternative measures for flood damage reduction. The goal of the model is to optimize the value of an objective function which will maximize the amount of net benefits returned by the project. The evaluation includes unit hydrograph synthesis, direct runoff construction, computation of average annual damages, and optimization of an objective function. A test application of the model is made on a small community affected by floods from a small ungauged stream"--Abstract, page iii.

A Discrete Approach To Surface Interpolation, Jerry Lee Albert Sandvos Jan 1974

A Discrete Approach To Surface Interpolation, Jerry Lee Albert Sandvos

Masters Theses

"An equidistant spacing of two dimensional data points is a requirement of most automated analysis routines. In this thesis, a method of generating such equispaced data from randomly spaced data is developed and implemented by a set of computer routines. The method represents the study area as a two dimensional spatial array, in which each array cell represents the data value of a subarea of the study area. A routine sorts and places the data in the array. Missing values in the array are interpolated from nearest neighbors. Filtering is used to smooth errors and a contouring routine is used …
