CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE This non-interpretive report contains the results of 90 tests on circular and oblong puddle weld connections. The connections involved test specimens constructed of flat steel plates and thin connecting sheets of varying thicknesses (10 to 28 gage) with the welds to be studied forning the bond between them. Testing consisted of tensile loading to ultimate failure. This work was carried out under contract with the Engineering Division of the American Iron and Steel Institute.

The Effect Of Antimony, Chloride Ion, And Glue On Copper Electrorefining, Thomas J. O'Keefe, L. R. Hurst

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study has been made to determine the effect of antimony, chloride ion, and glue on copper electrorefining. All deposits were made at a temperature of 65° C on a titanium cathode. Current densities of 398 A m-2 and 133 A m-2 were used. The deposits were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine morphology and crystal orientation. Atomic absorption (AA) and Auger spectroscopy (AES) were used to study the chemical composition of the deposits and a simple bend test was used to determine structural integrity. It was found that when the antimony concentration in …

Strength Of Arc-Spot Weld In Sheet Steel Construction, Ching Fung Jan 1978

Strength Of Arc-Spot Weld In Sheet Steel Construction, Ching Fung

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

The weld used by the steel deck erectors to anchor steel decking to structural steel framing is commonly known as "Puddle Weld". It is formed by arc-welding with stick electrodes to "melt" through the deck, resulting in puddle of molten steel durinlj the welding operation. Hence, the weld is commonly referred to in the trade as "Puddle Weld". Since the inception of this research projE:ct, this type of weld has been given a new technical name -the "Arc-Spot Feld" to reflect the actual welding process and the formation of the weld.

Web Crippling Strength And A Combination Of Bending And Web Crippling Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Nipon Hetrakul Jan 1978

Web Crippling Strength And A Combination Of Bending And Web Crippling Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Nipon Hetrakul

Doctoral Dissertations

"The web crippling strength of cold-formed steel beams was investigated experimentally. In this investigation, due consideration was given to the possible influence of bending moment and shear force on the web-crippling loads.

For the subject of web crippling strength, the study involved the testing of 140 built-up beams having single unreinforced webs and 152 I-beams having double webs. In addition, 66 beam tests were conducted for the case of combined bending moment, shear and web crippling.

The experimental results obtained from the beam tests conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla and the early tests performed previously at Cornell University were …

Method And Apparatus For Water Jet Drilling Of Rock, David A. Summers, Marian Mazurkiewicz, Dwight J. Bushnell, James Blaine

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rock drilling method and apparatus utilizing high pressure water jets for drilling holes of relatively small diameter at speeds significantly greater than that attainable with existing drilling tools. Greatly increased drilling rates are attained due to jet nozzle geometry and speed of rotation. The jet nozzle design has two orifices, one pointing axially ahead in the direction of travel and the second inclined at an angle of approximately 30° from the axis. The two orifices have diameters in the ratio of approximately 1:2. Liquid jet velocities in excess of 1,000 ft/sec are used, and the nozzle is rotated at speeds …

The Effects Of Interstage Backmixing On The Design Of A Multicomponent Distillation Column, Gary D. Loud, Raymond C. Waggoner Jan 1978

The Effects Of Interstage Backmixing On The Design Of A Multicomponent Distillation Column, Gary D. Loud, Raymond C. Waggoner

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interstage back mixing is encountered as entrainment in many distillation columns. Bidirectional back mixing is common in liquid-liquid extraction. These effects, which reduce the effectiveness of a separation process, may interfere with its operation even to the extent of shutdown. The design engineer and process operator need to recognize the effects of back mixing and must quantify them to take effective countermeasures. A procedure is developed which describes the effects of interstage bidirectional back mixing in multistage separations. It is implemented on an existing simulation for multicomponent distillation and is used to show the effect of back mixing on product …

Sld Potamology Study (S-9), Jerome A. Westphal, Samuel P. Clemence

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Foreword

In this report, the authors discuss factors which relate to flow characteristics of the Middle Mississippi River and its major tributaries. The variety of ways in which man and nature interact to affect the hydrologic regime of the study area are almost infinite. Furthermore, the intensity and direction of man's activity is non-uniform with respect to both time and space. Therefore, on the scale of the study area, the authors assert that 1) it is difficult to verify associations between specific human actions and river responses and 2) at this time, it is impossible to do so in a …

Disk And Strip Forging With Side Surface Foldower: Part 2: Evaluation Of The Upper-Bound Solutions, Ronald A. Kohser, B. Avitzur Jan 1978

Disk And Strip Forging With Side Surface Foldower: Part 2: Evaluation Of The Upper-Bound Solutions, Ronald A. Kohser, B. Avitzur

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The upper-bound solutions developed in Part 1 are evaluated with regard to their ability to produce a lower value for required power (load, pressure, or work). Comparisons made with existing solutions such as the triangular field solution and one-zone bulge solution show that for strip, each solution has a domain of geometry and friction in which it is superior. The new solution produces a lower upper-bound for conditions of high interface, friction and relatively thin specimen, the area where fold over is the observed mode of flow. For solid cylindrical disks, the solution fails to improve upon existing analyses, but …

Effect Of Collagen And Chloride Additions On Electrolytic Copper Deposits, William P. Lorenz, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Carlo B. Sonnino

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of collagen concentration and molecular weight on the morphology and crystal orientation of electrolytic copper deposits have been determined and compared. The effect of chlorides in the presence of collagen on the above properties has also been investigated. Three different molecular weight collagens were studied and the consumption rate of each was determined by chemical analysis of the electrolyte before and after electrodeposition. Two-hour deposits were made in an electrolyte containing the subject collagens in concentrations ranging from 1.2 to 38.4 mg 1-1. Scanning electron and light microscopes and X-ray diffraction were used to evaluate the electrodeposits. © …
