Model For Evaporation Of A Grain‐Boundary Phase, Manfred Wuttig, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1981

Model For Evaporation Of A Grain‐Boundary Phase, Manfred Wuttig, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The surface profile which develops in the vicinity of a grain boundary precipitate in the course of evaporation is calculated. It is shown that the presence of the grain boundary precipitate affects the profile significantly if the product of the width of the grain boundary precipitate and the ratio of the evaporation rates of the unperturbed surface and the grain boundary precipitate is larger than one. Fast Transient Contingency Evaluation In Power Systems, Rodrigo S. Chamorro, Max Darwin Anderson, Earl F. Richards Jan 1981

Fast Transient Contingency Evaluation In Power Systems, Rodrigo S. Chamorro, Max Darwin Anderson, Earl F. Richards

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of creating a practical computational tool to perform transient contingency analysis in a power system control center is considered. The computer program developed may be used in a control center computer where a state estimation program or a consistent set of load flow data is available. It can be run on a periodic basis over a previously specified contingency list, or it can be called by the system operator to analyze a particular contingency. The transient behavior of the system is evaluated based on a simulation technique widely acknowledged for its fast solutions. The method uses rapidly convergent …

Performance Of Third Harmonic Ground Fault Protection Schemes For Generator Stator Windings, R. L. Schlake, G. W. Buckley, George Mcpherson Jan 1981

Performance Of Third Harmonic Ground Fault Protection Schemes For Generator Stator Windings, R. L. Schlake, G. W. Buckley, George Mcpherson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper shows how the normally generated third-harmonic voltage can be used to protect the lower ten to twenty percent of generator stator windings against ground faults. A method of determining the applicability of the scheme to a given machine is described which takes into account the design of the generator and its externally connected apparatus. The effects of finite resistence ground faults are also investigated and other advantages of the scheme, such as protection of the neutral, are also highlighted. Phase 1 Inspection Report: National Dam Safety Program. Upper Mississippi - Kaskaskia - St. Louis Basin. Lake Bono Del Dam, Jefferson County, Missouri, Horner & Shifrin, Inc., St. Louis, Missouri

Missouri Dam Safety Inspection Reports

This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of the Lake Bono Del Dam (MO 30434):

It was prepared under the National Program of Inspection of Non-Federal Dams.

This dam has been classified as unsafe, non-emergency by the St. Louis District as a result of the application of the following criteria:

1) Spillway will not pass 50 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam.

2) Overtopping of the dam could result in failure of the dam.

3) Dam failure significantly increases the hazard to loss of life downstream.

A Model For Optimization Of The Archer's Compound Bow., Mark Aaron Kincy Jan 1981

A Model For Optimization Of The Archer's Compound Bow., Mark Aaron Kincy

Masters Theses

"The object of this work is to establish an analysis procedure to permit optimization of the design of ti1e compound bow. The distinguishing features of the compound bow are a system of cables and eccentric pulleys which change the leverage between the bow string and the bow limbs as the string is drawn. This approach concentrates on an accurate representation of the limb mechanics which will allow the design of eccentric wheels to improve the energy storage potential of the bow and thereby increases the velocity of an arrow cast by the bow.

The compound bow is a rather unique …

A Determination Of The Energy Storage Capacity Of The Diels-Alder Reaction Between Methylfuran And Maleic Anhydride As Applied To Storing Solar Energy, Brent Gregory Sparks Jan 1981

A Determination Of The Energy Storage Capacity Of The Diels-Alder Reaction Between Methylfuran And Maleic Anhydride As Applied To Storing Solar Energy, Brent Gregory Sparks

Masters Theses

“The heat storage capacity of the Diels-Alder reaction between 2-methylfuran and maleic anhydride is calculated using reaction parameters obtained from solution calorimetry. An equilibrium constant of .614 1/mol and a heat of reaction of 14.33 Kcal/mole were obtained from experiments at 45°C. A reaction ΔCp of -21.8 cal/mole was calculated from heat capacity information at 25°C. From these parameters, a solution initially seven molar in methylfuran and maleic anhydride was found to have a maximum apparent volumetric heat capacity of about 1.85 times that of water. This maximum occurs at about 335 K. Typical active solar energy schemes operate …

The Effect Of Air Turbulence On The Rate Of Frost Growth On A Horizontal Flat Plate, Dennis Wayne Schulte Jan 1981

The Effect Of Air Turbulence On The Rate Of Frost Growth On A Horizontal Flat Plate, Dennis Wayne Schulte

Masters Theses

“One factor currently affecting the efficient performance of finned refrigeration coils is frosting. This investigation determined the effect of air turbulence intensity on the growth rate of frost on a chilled flat plate in an effort to reduce the frosting problem.

Air turbulence intensities ranging from 1 to 22 percent were used with an air velocity of 590 fpm, and an air condition of 45°F and 0.0051 lb/lb humidity ratio, for the six hour tests. Additional tests at 7-8 percent air turbulence intensity were made for other air and velocity conditions.

The results showed that the effect of air turbulence …

Chemical Spray Pyrolysis Of Cadmium Telluride., Alok K. Berry Jan 1981

Chemical Spray Pyrolysis Of Cadmium Telluride., Alok K. Berry

Masters Theses

"Chemical spray pyrolysis is a technique for film growth which is of interest because of its potential for very large scale, inexpensive production of polycrystalline thin film semiconductor materials. Cadmium telluride shows promise as a base material for solar cell applications. Thin films of CdTe have been spray deposited on glass substrates from an aqueous solution containing CdC12, Teo2 and a reducing agent. The films show a zinc blende structure and appear to be intrinsic. Microprobe analysis indicate an excess of Cd, but this is not detectable by X-ray diffraction. The photo absorption studies indicate a direct …

High Voltage Powerline Injury Studies, A. Sances, S. J. Larson, J. F. Szablya, J. Derald Morgan, J. B. Myklebust

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Current pathways and reconstructions of human injury after contact with distribution powerlines are not well understood. The impedance, currents, and modes of tissue destruction are rarely known. Eight anesthetized hogs, weighing 68 to 90 kg, were used in studies with potentials ranging from 2,100 to 14,400 volts. Electrical contact was made between the hindlimbs, from the hindlimb to forelimb, and over other regions of the body. Currents from 4 to 70 amperes rms and impedances ranging from 130 to 477 ohms were measured. Phase angles up to 40° were observed. Copyright © 1981 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics …

Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, Boonsong Supornsilaphachai Jan 1981

Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, Boonsong Supornsilaphachai

Doctoral Dissertations

"In a traditional design, the Allowable Stress method has long been used for the design of cold-formed steel structures. In this design approach, the allowable stress is always used to prevent the possible structural failure by using an appropriate factor of safety selected primarily on the basis of engineering judgment and long-time experience.

Recently, the concepts of risk and reliability analysis have been successfully applied to many fields of engineering. By applying the theories of probability and statistics, the load and resistance design criteria for steel structures have been developed for the design of hot-rolled steel shapes and built-up members. …

The Inert Gas Effect On The Rate Of Evaporation Of Zinc And Cadmium, P. C.S. Wu, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Fred Kisslinger

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An experimental study has been made to investigate the effect of argon and helium on the rate of evaporation of zinc and cadmium under one atmosphere pressure at temperatures ranging from 500 to 850°C. The experimental results were compared with the maximum rates calculated using the effusion formula as well as with values obtained using two different types of equations based on kinetic theory, diffusion theory, and empirical data. Equations have been derived for expressing the rate of evaporation of zinc and cadmium in both argon and helium as functions of temperature of the liquid zinc and cadmium. It was …
